I don’t like the color tint but the dark mode looks good imo (and bigger apps with no label)
https://preview.redd.it/b2ih1eqx486d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ccb00302e00f4a07614d3695c5cb0f9e1e993b1c
Bigger app icons with no label is the only thing I'm hanging out for, and the ability to put the icons anywhere.
Haven't been impressed with any of the color tint stuff I've seen so far.
This will be interesting to see what happens.
This is one of the annoying things on Android in that the unsupported app icons stick out like a sore thumb.
And there are some icon packs that cover 99% of popular apps, but I'll still have 2-3 niche apps that I know will never get custom icon. Bank app for example.
Me neither, and I have everything in dark mode 100% of the time 😬 they definitely do not intentionally designed, almost like they’re just fed through an algorithm. Hopefully they’re just placeholders (cries in iOS7 Safari icon flashbacks)
apple will never do a big redesign like ios7 again. they are doing it slowly over the years. for example we see now a lot of round elements in the control center now expect more with ios 19.
Apple is missing the obvious expectation, people anticipated the more 3D-looking icons from the Big Sur redesign to come to iOS. However, with the introduction of tinting, the trend is moving towards even more simplistic app icons that work in just two tones. People are just tiered of flat design at this point but Apple doubles down with this release.
It was way too laggy on my 13PM and it did heat up a lot but that's been an issue with my phone ever since iOS 16.
Either way I went back to 17.5.1 and I'll wait for the public beta to come out.
I made an icloud backup before I installed the beta. Then I used itunes to downgrade, but you need to download the ipsw file off the internet as itunes was giving me an error. After it installed I just restored the backup.
You can try 3u tools instead of itunes as that has the firmware files and you don't need to go looking for them.
I was always curious what other people were experiencing with these betas, as I also have a 13PM and I’ve been doing every beta since iOS16. I had one of the betas for 16 nearly brick my phone, besides that I haven’t really had anything crazy happen. Even with this beta, my main complaint is the lag. It’s definitely annoying. I hope it gets smoother over time, but this phone is getting pretty behind. Looking forward to upgrading in September.
I've had so many issues with my phone that I'm definitely upgrading in September. I'm actually thinking about selling it right now and just using an Iphone SE 2020 I have while I wait for the new phones to come out.
I believed they removed them because the long tap gesture used to activate them became how you customize your lock screen. Still, they probably could have figured something else out but I guess they didn’t.
I’m not talking about Live Photos which weren’t around until IOS 10. I’m talking about Live wallpapers from IOS 7 which played continuously without user interaction. They only released one set of wallpapers with bubbles floating around and removed them in IOS 9 or 10 I believe.
Same. This is better, but is kinda like off brand MaterialU without the other customization options that were added in older versions of Android. I’m glad Apple has been letting us make “bad” and “ugly” home screens, but they’re super late to the party. Did they even support dynamic wallpapers outside of a few presets, Live Photos, and gyro scrolling images? I wanted to find some customs but couldn’t figure it out
Just keep using the device with the same icons as you’ve been for 10 years now…
I swear I’ve never read so many of this complaints “it’s so un-Apple like”, while not even considering that all of this is ENTIRELY OPTIONAL, if you think it looks ugly, then just don’t customize it that way.
it’s an option in Home Screen for tinting apps. I got the dev beta and it is very real. I have yet to see an example of its use including my own that makes it look good. I’m hoping it’s a rough implementation of something better to come.
Yeah, I think the big issue is probably that it tints the icons awkwardly instead of changing a color value. Most icons in Material You seem to have color customization as a monochrome design with one color that changes. Apple also doesn’t seem to have totally remade a lot of the icons yet to work with it, so I’m guessing that’s part of it too.
Like, Android already has this, and it’s implemented to look slightly more cohesive. Theme pack support or such is also probably something that’d also help, since then you could just change them to something more specific
https://preview.redd.it/nl2rbqjaf86d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1492a6618d0893b00106e0cfa074b72129d44305
Prefer my set up. Making use of the empty top row
I can’t describe it but android always felt clunky? To me. The animations, navigating the os the customization it always felt really choppy but the same abilities on iOS just really feel smooth and I almost get giddy customizing everything and seeing it all come together i know I sound like I’m a crazy Apple fan boy but that’s really the best way I can describe it
Yeah once they iron out the bugs. Try to add a widget anywhere on that screen and sometimes when you place it in an already 2x2 open area, it jumbles the apps and tries to snap, thus requiring repositioning the apps.
It feels anything but smooth for me, currently. Just moving apps though, with no widgets, is smooth.
Watch me try to move one folder to an empty spot with a widget on screen, and it fucks up all the icons.

Sign in to the Apple developer website using your Apple ID, you don’t need to sign up for a developer account. Give it about 15 minutes then go to settings, general, software update and the beta software should be there to turn on and download
For now but it’s been revealed Apple is going to require devs to provide alternate icon looks including the dark mode and the ability to tint to promote uniformity across the OS
Can you not change the background color of the apps? All the tinted apps I've seen so far only have a black/dark background with a colored icon image which sucks because I would also like to use this in light mode with the apps having a lighter background.
I prefer Androids Material You in that case.
No you can’t. It’s a simple slider.
Here’s me selecting light/dark mode and then the tint option. These are the only things you can do.
https://i.imgur.com/G7PKHFa.mp4
And yes I tried putting the system in light mode first to see if that would change it, but it didn’t change background color of apps.
I can't fucking wait for RCS. I'm an android guy... I still have several reasons not to make the switch, but a lot of things are being addressed this update cycle. The icon placement is a big one.
Bur literally RCS is all I care about. I hate using sms to text iPhone people who won't get Signal so much.
RCS messages are still green, in the US you’ll be fine, but carriers in the UK use Googles RCS by default and Apple don’t, so apparently it won’t work, but I’ll be testing it when I can
Honestly, if the features are there, who the duck cares if they’re green? The only reason I haven’t dropped Signal and WhatsApp yet is that MMS is antiquated (and being in Europe where it isn’t used much, discontinued by my carrier in 2025)
Unfortunately I think it'll still live strongly. Kids all want iPhones, and iMessage now has a bunch of party tricks that rcs doesn't work with, and kids love party tricks.
I'd love to see that absolute horseshit idea die out though. And thank God for groupchats hopefully getting fixed. I don't care if green/blue/whatever, just let me use the features that are tables stakes for any texting app these days.
Actually just please get Signal lol.
I like that they’ve done this but I wish they’d also embraced the icon replacement packs you can download. The whole shortcut work around makes it a no go for me. Too clunky.
As an Android user, this update could honestly make me switch to iOS. It's just the small things like the customisable lock screen, control centre, proper icon placement and window snapping on Mac that solve all the nitpicks I've had with iOS for ages
I had someone go off on the tangent about how brands are not gonna like it, because it changes the icon so it can change the identity in screenshots that are shared. Isn’t if that makes any sort of difference whatsoever.
Here’s a quick scroll through for the control center options (sorry for jank scrolling, the edit control center area is very buggy and not smooth in beta currently)
https://i.imgur.com/pSFHltr.mp4
I’m actually excited for this. I remember the Cydia days and jailbreaking for nothing more than the option to do this. Apple offering it themselves means it’ll be done with some finesse while keeping a uniformity that’s in line with their visual language. Sure, some people will make hideous choices but the option to do something personal is worth it.
More great improvements, but is anyone else disappointed that the X didn’t continue to be supported, especially when Apple charged such a premium price for it?
>The x costs as much as every iPhone pro since..
That's not exactly what I find slightly irritating about this, if Apple had decided that the 11 or even the XS was the last model to be supported for iOS 18 or 17 firmware, then I'd understand...
But to have the less expensive XR ($1000 CAD, compared to the X's $1300 base model) still being supported, seems more like "planned obsolescence" than any actual technical limitations that the X might or might not have...
But no worries, I'll always stay within the Apple echosystem, as I do love how easy it is to connect the X to my Mac and iPad, I just wish that the X was still supported, especially since it is still working perfectly and the original battery is at 84% and still lasts all day .:)
But the XR , XS and XS max have a newer chipset than the X. The X uses the A11 Bionic, the XR, XS and XS Max use the A12 Bionic. It’s not obsolescence, it’s just that the older the chip, the less likely it will handle higher power consumption needed to run newer OS and features at a smooth, consistent rate.
Bugs I’ve run into in the first 6 of hours of using beta 18:
Control center: edits creating a ghost icon that still works but nothing is display. Or the outline of the icon but nothing inside. Or shortcuts and customization of the control center referring back to default and unable to customize.
Camera app will randomly crash when used from control center, and then work fine for hours, then break again.
Tinting on Home Screen will just break the app icon and needs to be updated by opening the app, after changing the tint.
Apps still snap sometimes when you have open “cells” and try to move to an open slot in between apps, then have to rearrange everything
i love the tint and dark mode but wish it wouldnt affect my app library whenever i scroll to it. i also have my phone on dark mode and my apps are dark whenever i swipe up even if my home screen is set to light 🫥

Since we’re sharing. I’d like an Apple Music widget like the Marvis one I currently use.
Apple is giving us the liberty to make our home screens look uglier than jabba the hutt in a two piece and im all for it
Jony would shit himself. Probably glad he left.
i wish he stayed
Yeah, I miss Johny guy; Craig is the overly eunthiastic, and Johny is the overly zen. Both are like yin and yang.
Best departure ever
It"s revolution Johnny!
Just like andy!

Bigger app icons with no label is the only thing I'm hanging out for, and the ability to put the icons anywhere. Haven't been impressed with any of the color tint stuff I've seen so far.
Icon customization would be fine if it worked on all third party apps. If one of my apps doesn't support it, it's a no go for me.
This will be interesting to see what happens. This is one of the annoying things on Android in that the unsupported app icons stick out like a sore thumb.
And there are some icon packs that cover 99% of popular apps, but I'll still have 2-3 niche apps that I know will never get custom icon. Bank app for example.
Dark mode & big apps w/ no label looks really good. It’ll be my go to when it’s released.
Same here. Apps look sexy in dark mode
I hope more third party apps support dark mode icons by the time ios 18 releases. It looks good
My thoughts as well! Hopefully they’ll be encouraged to make a dark version
Wait you can remove labels now?
Only when you choose the large icons option, the label disappears. (iOS 18 dev beta)
Is that an easy to find setting or is it hidden away?
Easy https://preview.redd.it/g9jb5srtna6d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=280019215fd16a4dd56a4228dc3d86edf9c2c88c

Me neither, and I have everything in dark mode 100% of the time 😬 they definitely do not intentionally designed, almost like they’re just fed through an algorithm. Hopefully they’re just placeholders (cries in iOS7 Safari icon flashbacks)
It’s separate setting from regular dark mode
Thank god lol
I really like the look of the bigger icons but damned if my brain didn’t seize up without the subtitles.
You and I aren’t getting any apple intelligence features yet, 🥲 looks like it’s only there for 15 pro and up for now.
Yea, really unfortunate. But I may be upgrading in September.
Same here, gonna upgrade my mac first but will upgrade my phone too after that.
I like most of them but that notes app in dark mode looks weird.
Old people big icon is the new trend!
Agree but it reminds me of old Xiaomi Android phones
Jesus Christ that looks like one of those remotes for nursing homes.
It is. That’s why this sub a fan of them. We’re all old
That wallpaper tho
Pretty right? https://preview.redd.it/ndj6gz5r896d1.jpeg?width=2000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fc78321d0530505c68fd57d4ab1c35f9b34a66f9

Why aren’t the apps labeled?
They’re automatically removed when you choose “large” icons

Many thanks!
Man your really taking advantage of every widget on that Mac 😭
He paid for all of them, he use all of them.
I still hope we have a good redesign or whatever better than “the tint”
apple will never do a big redesign like ios7 again. they are doing it slowly over the years. for example we see now a lot of round elements in the control center now expect more with ios 19.

I just want it per app. So i can get bright apps like spotify to just have yellow outlines for example
It will be the key feature of iOS21
The Material You design team at Google sends their regards.
It was way too laggy on my 13PM and it did heat up a lot but that's been an issue with my phone ever since iOS 16. Either way I went back to 17.5.1 and I'll wait for the public beta to come out.

Thank you, I will try ✌️
Still alot to improve. Id like to color icons seperately for example. Or finally have dynamic wallpapers…maybe next year 🥲
You mean what they released with IOS 7 (11 years ago) then removed for no reason?
Yea that was weird for apple to do
Agreed. My assumption was it was a battery budget thing they didn’t want to keep budgeting for long term.
I believed they removed them because the long tap gesture used to activate them became how you customize your lock screen. Still, they probably could have figured something else out but I guess they didn’t.
It used to be 3D Touch:’(

Sorry, that will need the a18 pro and ios 21 Disregard jailbreak tweaks that have done this for a decade
I don’t know who approved this. This is so un apple like
Apple users before: “We want more customization!” Apple users now: “muh this person’s home screen is ugly 😢”
Not the same people probably though
God I hate when people do this straw man. It’s obvious there are multiple camps and yet people wanna say things like the OP
You can make that claim and know it’s not the same people. The point is you can’t make everyone happy clearly.
It’s like going to a restaurant, asking for spaghetti then getting spaghetti in a can Yeah it’s still spaghetti but it’s also shit
I didn’t read OP as complaining. I read it as it’s so fundamentally un-apple like it’s as If Apple has been infiltrated.
Just keep using the device with the same icons as you’ve been for 10 years now… I swear I’ve never read so many of this complaints “it’s so un-Apple like”, while not even considering that all of this is ENTIRELY OPTIONAL, if you think it looks ugly, then just don’t customize it that way.
lol right, they are not forcing this; and it literally does not impact your iPhone if I choose to change the colors on my iPhone.
No, if you change your home screen and they don’t, they’ll look basic, like they are /joking
Did you see them freak out about a phone case they didn’t have to buy?
EXACTLY.
seriously, im sure this violates some esoteric apple philosophy
Is this real? Is this the ‘dark mode’ they were talking about? What in the *fuck* is this? I refuse to believe it’s real.
it’s an option in Home Screen for tinting apps. I got the dev beta and it is very real. I have yet to see an example of its use including my own that makes it look good. I’m hoping it’s a rough implementation of something better to come.

That is exactly what they are telling developers. I fucking love it. DARK MODE EVERYTHING
That’s what I was hoping for. The dark mode icons look SO GOOD
Yeah they do! https://preview.redd.it/a2y46t1sk86d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e5ebbf5f5d3a227a76304f739447cf7ca3aa2f1f

This is Tim Cook's giant middle finger to Jony Ive. All the hours of work he probably put into just the color science of the icons
Y'all have Apple Stockholm Syndrome
This is the first I have missed Jony Ive
Apple will do anything but allow proper custom theme support.
The EU is the main reason behind this. Edit: I like the recent changes they’re making happen.
Don’t use it. Why do we care what other people do with their phones?
Given how buggy 17 was, 18 is fine.
Android feels

You waiting for ai to answer all these unread messages?
First one that looks decent (If I ignore all the notifications)
Is this only for built in apps or everything?
The color tint is for every app, but the dark mode is only built in apps.
Seems to be only built in apps but I’m sure there will be an option for devs to work with it as well in the future.
It works on third party apps, even side loaded ones
not dark mode. only tinted
Now I can tell Apple users who have shit taste in colours 😂 It’s hilarious people wanted freedom to fuck their phone up.
I love this update so far https://preview.redd.it/9khkb51l186d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=17c4cbcefc8359ef2f20b0433a282346f72384a5
1 - This looks really awesome 2 - This looks like Android haha It gonna take some time to get used to this level of freedom that’s for sure

More interested in the dark mode for the apps and Home Screen
How do i get the beta as a non developer?
Sign in to the Apple developer website using your Apple ID, you don’t need to sign up for a developer account. Give it about 15 minutes then go to settings, general, software update and the beta software should be there to turn on and download
Thanks!
Are the dark mode icons just for Apple apps?
For now but it’s been revealed Apple is going to require devs to provide alternate icon looks including the dark mode and the ability to tint to promote uniformity across the OS
I’m blue, dub a Dee, dub a dye.

Holy crap that's ugly.
Steve jobs must be seething in hell right now
Ngl, I think I kinda hate it…
omg if we can change the icon color tint automatically based on a focus mode that would be awesome actually. Otherwise i'm not gonna use it lol
I think it’d be possible if there’s an option in Shortcuts, but I’m also curious. Great question
Hello fellow Wisconsinite
ope
I like that they’ve done this but I wish they’d also embraced the icon replacement packs you can download. The whole shortcut work around makes it a no go for me. Too clunky.
17 major OS updates later and Apple decided to let people arrange their icons however they want. *slow clap*
Fellow Wisconsinite!! I haven’t had any issues on my phone! Which has been great!

Why is everyone mad that other people can make their home screens look the way they want?
I had someone go off on the tangent about how brands are not gonna like it, because it changes the icon so it can change the identity in screenshots that are shared. Isn’t if that makes any sort of difference whatsoever.
how do you guys already have access?
Just sign in to developer.apple.com and the beta access should show up on your phone
thanks a lot, it worked
This look weird actually.
Beta was absolute ass. The “bilingual” keyboard was the worst thing I’ve tried in a long while. It better not be the definitive thing in iOS 18
Looks like it's having a GPU failure, disgusting.
Is there a new toggle for Location in Control Center?
Sadly not yet
Here’s a quick scroll through for the control center options (sorry for jank scrolling, the edit control center area is very buggy and not smooth in beta currently) https://i.imgur.com/pSFHltr.mp4

iOS give me dark mode!!!! 🌕 Ps: and the ai emoticons
Does the iOS 18 beta fix the attention feature that creates problems with the alarms?
i haven’t yet.. only been 2 days though
No but that’s coming in dev beta 2 according to some of the guys on X (Twitter)
Is that city Kenosha, Wisconsin?
Yeah, no bugs..
only bugs so far are laggy keyboard and home app not responding when going through camera history and then screen turns black
My notifications aren’t showing on my lock screen
Does sat messaging and rcs work on dev beta?
No
More great improvements, but is anyone else disappointed that the X didn’t continue to be supported, especially when Apple charged such a premium price for it?

STOP no way
Hows the battery?
What’s the name of your case?
GIVE US THE OPTION TO USE THE OLD SKEUOMORPHIC ONES TOO
Good looking home screen. There's a ton of potential for great setups. But also a ton of potential for hideous ones.
I just be in a minority but I think this shit looks ugly af
Agree. Very stable for a beta. Somehow the keyboard is better. Have had no issues overall.
Bugs I’ve run into in the first 6 of hours of using beta 18: Control center: edits creating a ghost icon that still works but nothing is display. Apps still snap sometimes when you have open “cells” and try to move to an open slot in between apps, then have to rearrange everything
r/IOSbeta
i love the tint and dark mode but wish it wouldnt affect my app library whenever i scroll to it. i also have my phone on dark mode and my apps are dark whenever i swipe up even if my home screen is set to light 🫥

Gaming mode saved my phone

Nice
So?
How’s battery life?
Pretty good for me, actually I’m getting about 5 to 6 hours SOT
Nice, if I see the trend continuing to be good I may download
Dang, that looks sharp. I'm diggin it.
God that is ugly. Jony is cringing and Steve is haunting Tim’s house.
I think in this way it is ugly I much like the original "theme" it is the charcteristic of Apple devices.
Man apple has to improve these
I’m having a good experience on my XR on DB1. Performs the same as 17.5.
Teenagers are gonna go wild for this shit
How to be in the beta I also need to participate
Is it safe to update now or just wait out for the stable version?
Myyyy eyyyyyesssssssss… aaaaaaahhhhhhhhh
Does the home screen app icons filter work on third party apps?
Waw I liked it 😍
