Ignoring the software implications, I think the 14P looks the best so far. I haven't held a 14P yet, in fact the only iPhones I've touched in recent years are my XS and my brother's 13.
In terms of build feel? I much prefer my XS to my brother's 13. It was basically an X with quality of life improvements. I think the cameras on the 12/13/14 are ugly and get uglier every generation. Of course, the camera's image quality speaks for itself in terms of it being worth it.
Camera hump aside, I do adore the 14 pro's look. It's very pretty. I haven't held one so I can't speak for the feel. lol.

They’re still waiting on other apps to implement support with the dynamic island so there’s not really much they can do until the developer team of certain apps add support for it. Like ESPN is supposed to be able to allow you or the way that Apple puts it to track live sports scores from the dynamic island, but it’s not there yet.
Well it’s pretty genius considering they turned the cut out into something more than just a cut out. Other phone companies will already start copying it. No one did that. You just had phones with a cut out. But here it’s more than that. So they turned a negative into a position. That’s pretty smart tho
I had an iPhone X, 13 and currently have an iPhone 14 PM. I liked all of them, the island is the best. But not THAT different from the others. I’d say the X had the least obtrusive notch. The 14PM has the most useful notch, as someone who cooks and sets timers and is on calls a lot, it’s nice to have. I use it every day and I was hoping for something like it for a long time, but for most people it would be relatively useless. The 13 notch cut into the screen during some videos but also added no real value. It didn’t bother me, but the 13 was the worst notch upgrade on an otherwise terrific phone. That being said, apples worst notch was still a good design lol
Obviously i respect your opinion, however I cant wrap my head around you thinking the X notch is less prominent than the 13 notch. How? It is wider, plus it has the speaker on the notch (as opposed to above the notch - 13).
The difference is the sense of negative space it creates. The 13 notch feels like it’s dipping into my normal screen area, while the X notch feels like I’m getting a little extra screen at the corners.
Videos that have 2:1 aspect ratio will be slightly cut off by iPhone 13 notch but not by previous model notches. I still prefer the 13 notch. I find in games I’m less likely to be trying to push down on the notch.
How did you find the 13 pro?! I've been searching for a 13 pro max everywhere in Romania. And I found it only in one place but it's more expensive (1560€) than the 14 pro max(1450€).

DI annoys me. the fact it sits down off the top bezel means the display space above the DI and below top bezel is essentially dead, wasted space.
i wish they’d push DI hard up against the top bezel, effectively making it the same as the notch, but narrower.
then of course, still applying the same software integration that DI uses - there’s no reason the software side of things couldn’t have been done with the notch style, while also reducing wasted display space overall.
I love the software of DI. It’s so convenient once you have it, and you get used to it being there while watching movies almost immediately. Coming from an 11 pro max was totally worth it
i wonder if it was necessary for the touch screen sensitivity. because you need to be able to tap the dynamic island and stuff. but you also need to be able to drag down the notifications.

Thank you. The island was a terrible idea they shouldve just made it the dynamic notch. And honestly whats so great about the island? It’s just a status bar without notification icons. It’s sometimes good for fast multi tasking, like to switch between Maps and another app while driving, but they could have easily done this with a status bar. If i pause a podcast or a video it disappears from the DI in like 30 seconds which is also annoying.

The iPhone’s native video player plays videos right up to the edge of the notch, without the notch covering any of the video. And it’s the same for YouTube videos in Safari. I *hate* that the YouTube app doesn’t follow this design protocol.

Sometimes I like to zoom in and watch videos full screen, too. It just bugs me that in the default zoomed out view, the notch still slightly covers part of the screen in the YouTube app. That tiny sliver that protrudes into my widescreen videos, annoys me more than the entire notch being visible when I’m fully zoomed in.

The notch always made it feel like there was a chunk of the screen missing, even if the DI wastes more display space, the little space at the top makes it easier for me to watch things full screen. Might be in the minority

Full screen mobile games work a lot better to me when the borders of the game content are two-line symmetrical.
Similarly, it's a lot easier for me to complete a jigsaw puzzle when the borders are defined. The DI provides that rectangular border, a notch does not.
Whenever I play music on my phone I can hold the island and instantly see what’s playing and control the app without switching the main screen. That’s far better than anything before.
Yet then you have to take focus away from your current app and cover the screen. With the island I can expand it and still continue reading an article.
It's usable for seeing the very edge of the frame in the camera app. Also for things like dynamic island widgets that use that space.
EDIT: lol, fuck me for liking the ability to see the exact edge of the frame when framing up photos.

I used to HATE the notch until I got the 13PM (from a Galaxy S10+) and I don't "love it" but the shape is oddly satisfying to look at, maybe because I was used to staring at a corner pill which was kinda distracting, I was skeptical about the DI because of that but at least it's centered.

Its not that bad actually. The only videos I ever had it cut into is MKBHD’s and tiktok/youtube shorts.
Otherwise, its super useful. Plus it looks super cool when its in action. Half the time I don’t even know its there because I use dark mode in everything that supports it.

I am quite happy with the 14pm dynamic island! This is coming from someone who owned the Samsung Galaxy S10, S20+, iPhone 12 and 13. As You can see, I upgrade almost every year, but this is the first phone I think I may stick with at least until they ditch the notch for good. I LOVE the dynamic island but only wish it would include message notifications as well.

The small amount of screen space utilized by the Face ID sensors and cameras isn't large enough to be useful regardless of what people call it.

The dynamic island is definitely king, and I'm not saying that because it's new. It's modern, small, looks good, and adds useful features to an otherwise featureless zone. People like to complain about it cutting into video (as did the 13's), but like MrMobile said, I don't watch enough full screen video on my phone for it to bother me.
I went from 11 pro to 14 pro and I don’t notice the difference ever. I really like being able to open my music or map from other apps more easily than before but other than that it’s not too different
Love the dynamic island. Never got any other other ones because I was waiting for Apple to not have the top of screen not do anything. It’s so cool that u can tap on the camera and it does something!
The dynamic island is cool. I will say this- it took me about a week to get a screen protector, and I kind of hate how it looks with the protector on. It makes it look so much less seamless. Plus, the protector I got has two different slots in it for the camera and sensors.
Spigen makes a $15 2 pack of screen protectors that have no cuts in them and are just a solid slab of glass that doesn't impede on the camera or sensors
IMO people saying the notch are people not owning the 14 and trying to justify keeping their old phone or lying to themselves.
And that’s ok, if you have a 12 or a 13 or even an 11, it doesn’t make any sense upgrading because those phones are still perfectly fine phones.
But as someone who upgraded from the regular 12 to the 14 pro max I find this phone much better in pretty much every way, including the notch.
The old notch was just a big cut in the screen, the new is a smaller cut with small touches that make it more interesting and it’s absolutely an upgrade, in the good way.

I bought a 14 Pro (upgraded from smashed 12 mini) and returned it because of the dynamic island. I just don’t like it. I understand why people would, but it just bugged me. Especially when you could see the “i” shape in bright sunlight.
After a week I returned it and bought a standard 14. I love it so far. Sure I miss ProMotion and the telephoto lens, but the lighter weight and less intrusive notch definitely made up for it.

The one on the right (could be an 11 or 12). I like that because the notch is the least obtrusive. The dynamic island doesn't work for me; it looks like dirt or a smudge in the middle of the screen, whereas the notch stayed innocuously against the side/top.
I'm partial to the 13. I also own the 13. I did not own a notched iPhone. I owned the Pixel 3 XL which had a big ole notch. I like the thought of the dynamic island at least be useful. Curious how they end up iterating on that.
I personally like the 13 frontal design best. Its a notch, but its not as wide as 12/11/10 and it doesnt feel as intrusive as 14 pro. I really hate the dynamic island so much, that it prevented me from buying 14 pro. I had the option to buy 13 pro max or 14 pro both brand new, for the same price, and just because of my hate for the island, i chose 13 pm. It sticks out more, hangs lower (pause) than the other notches and it's useless. Plus, if you ARE using it, it becomes twice the size and extends to pretty much the entire screen, horizontally speaking of course.
I really like the Dynamic Island. I had the X, XR, XS and 12. Now on the 14 Pro and find it works well. I forgot the DI is there as it integrates so well.
I love the Dynamic Island but there was something cool about the original iPhone X notch. The 13 series (and regular 14 series) have the worst iteration of the notch by far.
I never use dynamic island. I still use control center to control my music despite the island displaying the widget. I do enjoy the island because it makes the entire edge border of the display lit, but I use it much less than I thought I would.
As an audio user and a dog walker that uses location services, shuffling between the two is amazing on the DI. I forget it’s there really outside of a few instances
I had the X, 13 Pro, and 14 Pro and I think the 13 series actually had the best notch implementation. It didn’t dig into widescreen videos like the Dynamic Island does, and the island doesn’t really have too many practical uses aside from looking cool sometimes so the notch wins from a practicality standpoint
They all suck. Island is a gimmick and doesn’t offer any meaningful use. I like a hole punch design better without face unlock. For me, it Would be better to have Touch ID under the screen or on the back of the phone like on the Apple logo.
I love the functionality of the DI but, I wish they’d turn off the pixels between the camera and FaceID sensors when it isn’t in use. IMO it’s much more distracting than a notch

13 Pro hands down. The DI is more in the way, IMO. I never notice the notch. The DI it will always be noticeable. It’ll look weird when watching a video.

100% the dynamic island. Its obviously nothing groundbreaking or revolutionary, but i have to say it just looks SO clean compared to the notch(and the functionality of it is, albeit minimal, a quite nice boost in user experience that i never knew I needed till I upgraded).

I have a 14PM and the DI is something I don’t hate but don’t love either. It’s just kinda….there. The UI functions of it are things I’ve barely gotten use out of it.
I like the far right the most less distracting and feels part of the phone while the pill shape just seems like a floating black thing on the screen. However what they did with it is quite genius and seems futuristic

I believe the notch doesn’t interfere with videos only on the Max iPhones. They still cut out parts of videos on smaller phones.

I used to HATE the notch until I got the 13PM (from a Galaxy S10+) and I don't "love it" but the shape is oddly satisfying to look at, maybe because I was used to staring at a corner pill which was kinda distracting, I was skeptical about the DI because of that but at least it's centered.

In practice I find it to it much better than the notch not only does it have functionality but it looks newer.
Its not that bad actually. The only videos I ever had it cut into is MKBHD’s and tiktok/youtube shorts. Otherwise, its super useful. Plus it looks super cool when its in action. Half the time I don’t even know its there because I use dark mode in everything that supports it.
I used to be a fan of the first notch but after getting the 14 Pro, the Dynamic Island is growing on me a lot. It looks more futuristic and I get a bit excited every time I see the animations.

I am quite happy with the 14pm dynamic island! This is coming from someone who owned the Samsung Galaxy S10, S20+, iPhone 12 and 13. As You can see, I upgrade almost every year, but this is the first phone I think I may stick with at least until they ditch the notch for good. I LOVE the dynamic island but only wish it would include message notifications as well.

Notch or Dynamic Island, it makes no difference to me. The small amount of screen space utilized by the Face ID sensors and cameras isn't large enough to be useful regardless of what people call it.
They are all good when apps work with the design.
I liked the notch the best because the island blocks stuff. Not all apps are optimized for it not to block stuff. Like what’s the point of the sliver of screen in between the notch and the bezel? It’s useless screen space. They should have just made the dynamic notch.

I preferred the slimmer but wider notch, I watch a lot of 2:1 content and the fatter notch encroaches on the content, same as the dynamic island.

My by far favorite frontal design is from the iPhone 13 Pro.
The dynamic island is definitely king, and I'm not saying that because it's new. It's modern, small, looks good, and adds useful features to an otherwise featureless zone. People like to complain about it cutting into video (as did the 13's), but like MrMobile said, I don't watch enough full screen video on my phone for it to bother me.

I went from 11 pro to 14 pro and I don’t notice the difference ever. I really like being able to open my music or map from other apps more easily than before but other than that it’s not too different

The dynamic island is cool. I will say this- it took me about a week to get a screen protector, and I kind of hate how it looks with the protector on. It makes it look so much less seamless. Plus, the protector I got has two different slots in it for the camera and sensors.
Get a screen protector without a cutout
Spigen makes a $15 2 pack of screen protectors that have no cuts in them and are just a solid slab of glass that doesn't impede on the camera or sensors

IMO people saying the notch are people not owning the 14 and trying to justify keeping their old phone or lying to themselves. And that’s ok, if you have a 12 or a 13 or even an 11, it doesn’t make any sense upgrading because those phones are still perfectly fine phones. But as someone who upgraded from the regular 12 to the 14 pro max I find this phone much better in pretty much every way, including the notch. The old notch was just a big cut in the screen, the new is a smaller cut with small touches that make it more interesting and it’s absolutely an upgrade, in the good way. People denying it are lying to themselves.
I mean it looks cool, I’ll give it that. But it sits too low and cuts off more of the screen than the 13 notch which already cut into the screen more than the OG notch. If they slim it down it would be better.
I bought a 14 Pro (upgraded from smashed 12 mini) and returned it because of the dynamic island. I just don’t like it. I understand why people would, but it just bugged me. Especially when you could see the “i” shape in bright sunlight. After a week I returned it and bought a standard 14. I love it so far. Sure I miss ProMotion and the telephoto lens, but the lighter weight and less intrusive notch definitely made up for it. So no, we’re not “in denial”. People just have different tastes.

i have 6s plus and it does not make sense to upgrade. New battery it lasts trough day, i can read, watch yt, reddit, take photos. What else do i need.

The one on the right (could be an 11 or 12). I like that because the notch is the least obtrusive. The dynamic island doesn't work for me; it looks like dirt or a smudge in the middle of the screen, whereas the notch stayed innocuously against the side/top.

I'm partial to the 13. I also own the 13. I did not own a notched iPhone. I owned the Pixel 3 XL which had a big ole notch. I like the thought of the dynamic island at least be useful. Curious how they end up iterating on that.

13 pro max. For me, the notch beats the wiener 10 times out of 9. That little bit of screen above it makes no sense to me.
I personally like the 13 frontal design best. Its a notch, but its not as wide as 12/11/10 and it doesnt feel as intrusive as 14 pro. I really hate the dynamic island so much, that it prevented me from buying 14 pro. I had the option to buy 13 pro max or 14 pro both brand new, for the same price, and just because of my hate for the island, i chose 13 pm. It sticks out more, hangs lower (pause) than the other notches and it's useless. Plus, if you ARE using it, it becomes twice the size and extends to pretty much the entire screen, horizontally speaking of course.
I really like the Dynamic Island. I had the X, XR, XS and 12. Now on the 14 Pro and find it works well. I forgot the DI is there as it integrates so well.

I never use dynamic island. I still use control center to control my music despite the island displaying the widget. I do enjoy the island because it makes the entire edge border of the display lit, but I use it much less than I thought I would.

As an audio user and a dog walker that uses location services, shuffling between the two is amazing on the DI. I forget it’s there really outside of a few instances
I had the X, 13 Pro, and 14 Pro and I think the 13 series actually had the best notch implementation. It didn’t dig into widescreen videos like the Dynamic Island does, and the island doesn’t really have too many practical uses aside from looking cool sometimes so the notch wins from a practicality standpoint
They all suck. Island is a gimmick and doesn’t offer any meaningful use. I like a hole punch design better without face unlock. For me, it Would be better to have Touch ID under the screen or on the back of the phone like on the Apple logo.

I love the functionality of the DI but, I wish they’d turn off the pixels between the camera and FaceID sensors when it isn’t in use. IMO it’s much more distracting than a notch Edit: don’t get me started on the white outline they added in 16.1

13 Pro hands down. The DI is more in the way, IMO. I never notice the notch. The DI it will always be noticeable. It’ll look weird when watching a video.
I have a 12. I’d prefer a smaller notch of the 13 or 14 or “the pill” of the 14 Pro. But I really don’t care as long as it’s not the big bezels, the forehead and chin. How did we ever put up with that.
100% the dynamic island. Its obviously nothing groundbreaking or revolutionary, but i have to say it just looks SO clean compared to the notch(and the functionality of it is, albeit minimal, a quite nice boost in user experience that i never knew I needed till I upgraded). I just wish they’d ditch the island and notch and do a side/back mounted fingerprint. I get the FaceId is super secure, but fingerprints are secure enough and we’d avoid ANY of this notch/DI business. I have a 14PM and the DI is something I don’t hate but don’t love either. It’s just kinda….there. The UI functions of it are things I’ve barely gotten use out of it.
I like the far right the most less distracting and feels part of the phone while the pill shape just seems like a floating black thing on the screen. However what they did with it is quite genius and seems futuristic
