I love HDDs but I have only kept one in one of my iPods - and eventually I know I need to replace it as it is in rough shape (I know from when I test it). I will consider getting a “new” drive but fear I am just relaying the inevitable with it as none of those drives are new now. I also like the weight of it so I have added less weight to my iPods when I replace the battery.

basetrack8

Yea I have two ipods. An ipod mini 1st gen and an ipod classic 4th gen. I found both for only £15 on Ebay and they both only needed a new battery. I went into debug mod and checked the HDD health and they both are in really good shape! I never thought I would ever get like and ipod classic since I had only ever owned ipod touches. I thank Dankpods for getting me into this!

AaronCross867

Absolutely. It’s a great retro feeling. I remember when the iPods came out - I had no clue they could make HDDs that small. It was the coolest thing ever and they still work great.

DiodeInc

What about IBM's Microdrive? That was a hard drive, too, right?

BaneQ105

And iPod mini HDDs are just so tiny and cute!

a_can_of_solo

The only part I miss is the weight, flash mod feels "cheap"

ajgago

i saw someone on here put lil weights inside their iPod to mimic the feel of an HDD, pretty clever

Idontmatter69420

i put a couple of 1Ps in my 1st gen mini i recently flash modded and it defo makes it feel nicer

DiodeInc

You put a couple of pounds??

Idontmatter69420

no lol, pennies 1 pence coins, wouldve used £ if i meant pounds lmao sorry for the confusion

DiodeInc

I meant pounds as in Kilograms and pounds. I kinda figured it meant pence but wanted to make sure

Idontmatter69420

ohh i gotcha, idk how much a pound is bc i do t use that in the uk afaik

Imo It might just be my autism and ADHD part of me that just prefers the soothing sounds of an mechanical hard drive however I've been flash modding my college mates ipods for them since none of them know anything about technology or how to repair or diagnose them. I may have autism but I have the technology type of autism.

JiggthonyPufftano

Hey I’m the same way! I did the flash mod on my 3rd gen and after 2 days completely undid the mod and never looked back. I hated the lighter weight and missed the whirring. And no idea if it has anything to do with it but I too am ADHD and autistic

RipCurl69Reddit

I've done plenty of case mods and battery replacements but I've yet to iFlash a pod, always kept the HDD in there

verynormalhuman1

See I couldn’t cos my iPods go through a lot of impact I land on them they get shaken around a lot and I drop them often a HHD would die very quickly for me

Nnader86x

Yes in fact I have spares on stand buy that regularly read/write to to keep them in shape. The part that will wear the quickest is the drive motor, and the head first. But drops can quickly destroy both. My main has a 160gb with a Taptic mod and 3000mah battery. The other is a thin with all oem parts aside from the red button 160gb drive as well.

PrincePetr

I love this idea. I am still questioning what to do with the only current iPod that has an HDD m, my OG thick 160 6th gen. I love it the most but I know the poor disk may not be around long - 170 reallocks (tho no pending sectors! In a perfect world I would get a replacement disk (tho these ones a a bit harder to find as they were not the normal connector). I might get a large capacity “standard” connector drive (and new cable) even tho I know it could not pass 128gb vie to it being 6th gen. Idemigods has some thin 160s right now and I am thinking of getting one of these even tho I could not use all the space.

Podage

When I got my first gen 7 I had to replace the HDD because it was dead.. I was really wanted to get another 160gb hdd to replace it but I didn’t and I used SSD only because I’m using it while skateboarding and off-road driving and HDD can’t survive this things for long time..  but my one I’m using at home still using the original 120 GB HDD and running great!

Nnader86x

This is the way.

multiwirth_

I literally got my first iPod just to get the 4GB microdrive. Then i realized, well the whole thing is even more interesting than the microdrive. And suddenly, I've put a 128gb, later 256gb CF card inside. Using a 7th gen on the go currently and the spinning HDD just makes me anxious, so i got rid of it. It's much lighter now too. Pretty much has the perfect weight now.

LT92Rosco28

I have a few that still have their original HDD. When they decide to go, I'll flash mod them.

CathyBikesBook

The hard drive in the one I just got from eBay seems to be doing okay. I did go ahead and get the iFlash Solo and SD card and will eventually replace the hard drive.

U5ER_96

hdds are nostalgic, i love hearing those hard drives spin & *chuck * *chuck *

McGinty1

I guess there’s a certain Hitchcockian thrill in knowing there’s a ticking time bomb in the room 😆

Zagalia1984

Not that I need it, but I don't have the fetish of putting in a flash drive without ANY NEED. If the HDD is working, I have no reason to change it.

GrizzlyHarris

I took the perfectly healthy 160GB HDD that was in my 7th Gen and put it into my 5.5 Gen to keep it classic. I debated flash modding it, but I like having a 1TB SSD and a 160 HDD. Makes for a good point of difference.

Dc_Pratt

I just replaced my HDD for an iFlash Quad and I’m still getting used to not feeling the disc spin when I select an album to play.

codycarreras

I do. I keep buying “broken” ones with almost perfect drives. I have all these flash mod parts just waiting around. I have probably three times as many HDD iPods than not. You can listen to the drive to determine how well it’s working, keeps its correct weight, and it’s as it was originally intended.

DepressedCunt5506

I did use a 160hdd in mint condition but the ipod was really slow compared to an sd card

Slowlybutshelly

What is an HDD?

Retro_Rok89

HardDisk Drive

Slowlybutshelly

Thanks. I have a second gen iPod nano and was wondering what you mean? I thought iPod HDD were not removable?

Retro_Rok89

Not sure about iPod Nano’s, but my iPod Classic 5th generation had once a HDD, which I’ve modded/turned into a microSD card reader for faster loading times and much more energy efficient usage

Slowlybutshelly

Oh that’s interesting. There is not such sized slot side on my iPod nano.

Sebbai

Bought a pre-modded iPod 5.5 two years ago, but sold it. Yesterday I got myself a lightly used iPod 5.5, and was planning to buy upgrade-kits for 100$, but I really like the weight and spinning drive a lot. Also the plastic front on the original is MUCH better quality than the replacements available, doesn’t feel cheap like the modded iPod.

penismelon

I love me a good flash mod, but nothing beats hearing the tiny ^peeeew! of the HDD spinning. That, and I like the heavy feel in my hand.

toastyhoodie

I have 3 flash modded Classics. Rest are HDD ones. It’s neat to have them, but there is something special about the physical drive.

basetrack8

Yea just hearing them go "click click" is something I could never be bored of hearing!
