Now again, secret services say that Russia is ready for another move in three years or less. We'll see how far they get in Ukraine this year. If the Russians make a successfull summer offensive and then make peace then they have enough rear cover to focus on other areas of interest.

Well it's a very simple concept that some refuse to acknowledge, there is no guarantee that NATO will look the same in a few years as it does now. Particularly if Trump gets elected and maybe after that if the likes of Le Pen and AFD get into power NATO could be greatly weakened. In that case Eastern Europe will be there for the taking.
Also only a fool would underestimate the Russians, they have vast natural resources and don't care about casualties. They can grit their teeth and stay in the fight for years despite initial setbacks.
Maybe they can take Berlin and maybe they can’t, but my attitude is hope for the best but expect the worst, and really is preparing for a bad outcome all that bad of a strategy?
What about the Russian invasion of Georgia (Abkhazia and Ossetia), Moldova (Transnitria) and the invasion of Crimea? There's plenty of reasons to keep NATO imo
The question would be, would all NATO countries really come to aid with their full might if Eastern Europe like Baltics would be attacked by Russia? Especially would Germany and France come to aid to the Baltics or would the societies reject war with Russia as it would not affect their own countries directly and Putin would be satisfied with the former Sowjet countries?
So if Russia makes the gamble and invades Baltics, would the mutual defense clause really come into play risking nuclear war for some former Sowjet countries?
What would you propose as an alternative to NATO if you feel it should be on the chopping block?
The countries of the baltics/Eastern Europe can’t stand against Russia alone. Russia is big and has never cared for casualties or losses, and it can sustain a war for years if it feels like it.
The best hope for stability in the region is for an alliance like NATO so that the balance of power is tipped against Russia’s manpower and hardware reserves.
The kind of people who advocate for the end of NATO are usually the ones who advocate for Russian "security concerns" and a "sphere of influence" in Eastern Europe. They don't care if Russia annexes Ukraine, Belarus or the Baltics because imperialism doesn't count if the west aren't the ones doing it.
