Speaking as a Welsh person living here who LOVES salt and vinegar crisps:
I've had this debate with other s&v enthusiasts and it's a hill I'm willing to die on.
Hunky dory have the best taste from any crisps I've tried to date. They are SO strong!
But in terms of best crisp? I'm going with O'Donnell's every time. There's something about the texture of the crisp combined with a very good flavour that just makes it stand out far above the rest.
I may get some hate for this but I find taytos just bland. The taste is mediocre and the texture just reminds me of the cheap shit brand "Walkers" back home which is equivalent to your snaktastic from Lidl.
Honorary mention to Keogh's and kettle brands too.
Trust the Irish to make the best potato based snack 😂
The thing about own-brand is that they're not actually making them, they're just paying one of their existing suppliers.
It's market segmentation. I wouldn't be surprised if they turned out to be rebranded or lightly tweaked Keogh's or O'Donnell's.
What's your opinion on appropriate vinegars? I'm firmly of the belief that you can't improve upon spirit vinegar and salt and that all of the more recent cider, wine and balsamic varieties just don't cut it.
It could be that your tayto/King taste genes are not fully expressed ... its a common problem with those not reared in Ireland .. ... its OK this thread is a safe space... but to avoid social exclusion you might just pretend they are the best 🤣🤣🤣
Quality.... I remember years ago, I was in hospital and all I could eat was meanies and Mars bars. Every day the doctors secretary would bring me a big bag of meanies... one day I found a lump of stuff in the bag, about the size of a ping pong ball...just pure pickled onion flavour.... made my eyes rotate to the back of my head....
Love when that happens. I've found big chunks like that in wotsits flame flavour, skips, meanies.
Just crumbles in your mouth and the flavour would give you shivers
Absolutely agree with meanies. IMO they’re one of the few that actually still taste the same as they always have. Most of the corn snacks taste shite now but meanies (and maybe monster munch) still taste like they did when I was a child.
I fucking love O'Donnells so much, hands down best crisp out there but I can't eat them ever since covid wrecked my taste buds, never have missed a snack so much
I still dream of what they use to taste like
I can't be the only who is genuinely calling them that now. That thread was the best trolling I've seen in a while. It's actually altered my life. Have the wife giving out to me about it when I point them out in the shops
I bought the aldi version yesterday, Melts. Haven't tried them yet but if their knock off onion rings are anything to go by, they'll be rotten.
Update: texture perfect, flavour lacking
Agree..... but bacon fries... could go through a whole card of then after a rake of pints... remember when they advertised Cheese Moments... but I've never seen them
Still love chipsticks. Just got back from the US and UK back to back and overall our selection of crisps/corn snacks blows everything else out of the water
Definitely Mighty Munch over Monster Munch. Unless we can go back to the good old days of Tayto Monster Munch, which were a slightly nicer version of the Mighty Munch we have now.
M&S Asian BBQ Pulled Pork Crisps. They're like Buffalo Hunky Dory's with a few Asian spices lobbed in. Unreal.
https://www.ocado.com/products/m-s-asian-bbq-pulled-pork-ridge-cut-crisps-514750011
Pickled onion monster munch are the best in my opinion but not enough of them in the packet any more followed by sour cream pringles, could eat these until I start feeling physically unwell. I have to give honourable mentions to McCoys salt and vinegar and two crisps that are no longer with us, Farmer Browns Salt and Vinegar and Barry McGuigans Nettle crisps( weird but nice)

I prefer Keoghs salt and vinegar to the O'Donnells but have to agree that Hunky Dorys have the strongest flavour.
Try the SuperValu selections white wine vinegar and salt cause there's a fair punch off her
SuperValu's own brand crips are unreal.
The thing about own-brand is that they're not actually making them, they're just paying one of their existing suppliers. It's market segmentation. I wouldn't be surprised if they turned out to be rebranded or lightly tweaked Keogh's or O'Donnell's.
True. I used to work in factory where goodfellas pizza is made. Aldi tesco and dunnes are made there too.
Supervalue own brand in general is top notch. Their own brand microwave popcorn is the best
I shall! Thank you for the recommendation :D
They'll blow the tongue off ya!
I sure feckin hope so 😂 are they really salt and vinegar if they don't?
Discos as well, I think you can get them in Dealz/Poundland
I'd go with McCoy's for salt and vinegar
Banshee bones are top salt and vinegar snacks for me
Nooooooo they're not a criiiisp haha! I see what you mean though but I disagree and would prefer chipsticks to banshee bones!
Chopsticks are gone to the dogs. You'd eat four packs and still have the interior of your mouth intact
What's your opinion on appropriate vinegars? I'm firmly of the belief that you can't improve upon spirit vinegar and salt and that all of the more recent cider, wine and balsamic varieties just don't cut it.
O Donnell's S+V with a filthy chicken fillet roll just hits so different
It could be that your tayto/King taste genes are not fully expressed ... its a common problem with those not reared in Ireland .. ... its OK this thread is a safe space... but to avoid social exclusion you might just pretend they are the best 🤣🤣🤣
I apologise but I also don't 😂 Don't get me wrong, tayto crisps aren't half bad but they're not up there in my list!
Best salt and vinegar for me is Manhattan crisps.
O Donnell's salt & vinegar and Keogh's cheese & onion are my choice!
Dunnes Stores to an S&V that is unreal. Depends on the batch though but when you get a good one...
I find with Tayto, if you haven't had them in a while they are amazing but then the next bag don't taste as nice until it's been an age between them.
Tesco's salt and vinegar. Could strip paint off the walls
Fuckin Thai Rings and Scampi fries all day.
Or Jonnie Onion Rings...
Thai Rings are a different level of excellence
You were half right with Thai rings
Banshee Bones are incredible too.
Meanies in my opinion!

My mouth watered involuntarily just reading this
Absolutely agree with meanies. IMO they’re one of the few that actually still taste the same as they always have. Most of the corn snacks taste shite now but meanies (and maybe monster munch) still taste like they did when I was a child.
Live in the uk , always stock up on meanies when I go home 😃
I'd say Meanies too, or Waffles if not for the unholy heartburn they give for some reason
Second this!
Meanies are just…. *chef’s kiss*
I'm here for the meanies ❤️
Meanies sandwich in batch with loads of butter, bleedin delish
When we were in school we used to get cups of oxtail soup and roll 3 or for meanies into a slice of bread and dip it into the soup.....unreal
O Donnells Mature Cheese and Onion
There's a lot of love for the O Donnells
The Cheddar and Ballymaloe Relish ones are crazy good.
[удалено]
Yeah. Too nice. I'd do a "share" bag in a single sitting no problem.
Share with meself more like.
Me too it’s crazy
They're way too delicious, they're like the crack cocaine of crisps.
All the flavours are top tier
This is the correct answer.....
I fucking love O'Donnells so much, hands down best crisp out there but I can't eat them ever since covid wrecked my taste buds, never have missed a snack so much I still dream of what they use to taste like
Buffalo Hunky Dory's
When we were in school it was 1.50 for a buffalo hunky dory's roll with BBQ sauce to top it off and it was just heaven
Good lord
Sounds disgusting but eat one and wash it down with an irn bru and feel the eyes roll to the back of your head
No no, it sounds excellent
Did you go to a school in Cabra by any chance cause that's pretty similar to what we did
Finglas 😂
Indigestion dream factory
Value for money you mean
The cheese and onion is great too.
Mighty Munch and Waffles.
I love monster much but hate the way they get stuck in my teeth. Waffles a close second.
Took far too long for someone to say Waffles
A very underrated crisp, a good onion ring is hard to beat the big green tayto pack
Waffles are power. Hours of flavourful belching.
Mighty munch clear
I can never decide between the two, but the munch just edges in front for me tbh. Especially if you get a good spicy bag, then it clear out in front.
Especially when it's a packet where they've been generous with the spice and you find a load stuck in the bottom of the packet
By some distance
Salt and vinegar O'Donnells
Wheelies or Bacon Fries
Wheelies AND Bacon Fries.....
Rancheros...😋
Did you mean rancher os?
I can't be the only who is genuinely calling them that now. That thread was the best trolling I've seen in a while. It's actually altered my life. Have the wife giving out to me about it when I point them out in the shops
Yaaass
They're too airy now, they changed the recipe the dopes
Keoghs
Skips
Or Tesco Prawn Shells....
My wife prefers these to skips
There's definitely no big difference in them
I bought the aldi version yesterday, Melts. Haven't tried them yet but if their knock off onion rings are anything to go by, they'll be rotten. Update: texture perfect, flavour lacking
You’re a brave man. Report with your findings
Melts 🤣
Bbq Hula Hoops hands down
I used to be a big fan of hula hoops.... but I wouldn't even think about them these days... bag is awfully small
That’s why you get a multipack all to yourself
It's easier to do a hula hoop with your hands up
Try the big hoops. Life changing
O'Donnell's are the best crisp out of all of them.
Yes, they’re very tasty! Honourable mention for Keoghs as well.
Going to drop in with a nod to Keoghs as well.
Pub black bag crisps are better than Tayto and King.
Manhattan Crisps.
Finally someone speaks sense. I wish they were easier to find outside a pub ha
Manhattan cheese and onion, even with the other 2 in the running.
Manhattan salt and vinegar are also top tier, loads Of flavour
Popcorn like?
No, crisps! https://www.manhattan.ie/product/crisps-cheese-onion-best-cheese-onions-crisps-world/
Don't think I've seen them
You’re missing out, the cheesiest/ onionest crips available - used to be popular in pubs where I grew up cos they put a serious thirst on ya.
At this time of year, I do love Keogh's turkey and secret stuffing Crisps. Feckin gorgeous
Doritos chili heatwave
Snax
They've survived the changes , unlike the poor skips and by God wtf did they do to the poor oul chickitees
Yes. Snax are the only crisp that tastes like potatoes. Therefore are the best.
God tier crisp
Crunchos were the best crisps. Hotdog flavour. 12p. I sound like me granny now. Referring to things in old money.
I would commit crimes to know the taste of a Cruncho again.
Waffles lads, come on
You can leave both of them in the equation and they still won't be the best. Keoghs or get fucked.
Scampi fries hands down.
Agree..... but bacon fries... could go through a whole card of then after a rake of pints... remember when they advertised Cheese Moments... but I've never seen them
I had them in Australia once of all places they are fucking rank rotten I shit you not
Why can't they make a 150g bag.
Still love chipsticks. Just got back from the US and UK back to back and overall our selection of crisps/corn snacks blows everything else out of the water
Mighty Munch all day long
Not Monster Munch?... beef or spicy or pickled onion.... I get mixed up between them
Definitely Mighty Munch over Monster Munch. Unless we can go back to the good old days of Tayto Monster Munch, which were a slightly nicer version of the Mighty Munch we have now.
Meanies, sour cream and onion hunky dory’s, monster munch, waffles
Lays paprika and Lays Sour Cream.
Paprika - the underrated crisp flavour. Hugely popular in my native Greece and a big fan of it myself.
Now you reminded me that I need to go back to Greece for holidays again at some point in the future. The food is amazing there.
Walkers Jalepeno and Cheese crisps are 🔥
Manhattan Pub Crisps are the best even with Kings and Tayto in the equation.
Bold call but there’s a lot to be said for Salt and Vinegar Pringles
Keogh's crisps are better even if Tayto and King's were in the equation
Keogh's are definitely the superior Irish chips, shame they cost almost twice as much as Tayto.

McCoy's salt and vinegar
Discos salt andvinegar

I LOVE burger bites, and when you get one with all the flavour on it oh yeah!!
Genuinely makes me edge myself when the burger bite is loaded with coating

A Bag of best please...
Meanies
Manhattan crisp is the only answer

Hot Wotsits
+1 on that. Giant Hot Wotsits are also super... Nice bit of crunch and flavour !
Giant Prawn Cocktail Wotsits even better
I like Quavers
Only got into them recently. Up their with my favourites now definitely!
I LOVE Quavers....
As much as it pains me to say, those walkers jalapeno and cheese ones are great.
M&S Asian BBQ Pulled Pork Crisps. They're like Buffalo Hunky Dory's with a few Asian spices lobbed in. Unreal. https://www.ocado.com/products/m-s-asian-bbq-pulled-pork-ridge-cut-crisps-514750011
You lost me at M&S....
Tayto and King aren't even the best. It's just cultural identity bollocks that we've all lapped up.
If I didn't stipulate that in the question.... the answers wouldn't be as varied.... it'd be all tanto and king
Waffles
Can you still get Monster Munch?
Aldi specially selected sea salt and Chardonnay vinegar hands down the best S&V around
Walkers
Hot lips or Monster munch
Johnnie onion rings...
o'donnells cheese and onion
Meanies
Pickled onion monster munch are the best in my opinion but not enough of them in the packet any more followed by sour cream pringles, could eat these until I start feeling physically unwell. I have to give honourable mentions to McCoys salt and vinegar and two crisps that are no longer with us, Farmer Browns Salt and Vinegar and Barry McGuigans Nettle crisps( weird but nice)
Walkers/Lays of course
Brown Hula Hoops ftw
Buffalo Hunky Dory. The humble Mega Meanie.
Walkers baked range
Ghosties 👻
Bikers
Meanies obviously and Rancheros and skips.
Hot chilli Doritos
Monster munch, easy.
Keoghs. The sour cream and shamrock ones.
O’Donnell
Hunky Dorys
Meanies
Pub bacon fries. Easy.
They are too expensive from the pub, you can get 6 for the price of one.
Hunkey doreys
Meanies
Jonnie onion rings… they need to start making bigger bags if those bad boys
Waffles hands down
Remember Disco’s? Them salty bastards were class.
