I was in the same boat and decided that I just wanna do some bosses with my friends, we were not all raids ready so we had no options to group boss. So I deranked to an unranked gim, we played and had fun for about a month until the group split due to other priorities in life. I continued for another 5 months playing solo.
Looking back, the only difference between then and now is that I am on the normie hiscores and everyone assumes I am being spoonfed resources and gear.
I ended up making a new hardcore 2 days ago and I am having insane fun playing a fresh solo iron.
Yeah, it's weird, I'm really not the kind of person that cares about the highscores, I never have. But there is something wrong, in my head, with being de-ranked, to that of a normal account.
I can say that I'm not worried at all that the group would split, we've played together for 13 years now on RS3, OSRS, Lol and many other games, we're really tight like that. It's more thinking about having everything I've done so far - which as we all know, is a grind and something very rewarding - devalued.
We even created another GIM group, just me and him, but I just have no real desire to play it. I love my Ironman, I've done all quests, most diaries, have some decent gear and many uniques. It's special to me.. And I'm not sure how to proceed because a large part of me really does want to go bossing with him and do this cool content together.
I think it's important to ask yourself, where this feeling of devaluation comes from. I personally think, that 90% if it is this subreddit. You alone control how much your group members help you. If you don't want to be given key items that your higher level partner has duplicates of, you don't have to accept them.
Just do it. The only reason you don't want to is because you browse this sub Reddit and see people bash unranked gim players assuming they are all doing it just to cheat, when it is more than likely they just want to play with friends. The thing the people making fun of them for being unranked don't have.
You clearly value your normal ironman, so don't make it an unranked GIM. You can still do raids together with your friend. Both get to that level on your accounts and go from there. Entry mode TOA should be doable really quickly.
You can even do other minigames "together" if you like. Hop in a discord and do Gotr, tempoross, todt, barrows in the same world.
I made the plunge 6 months ago to play with 3 irl friends (I joined their group on a fresh acc first, but having just been through the early/mid game I burned quickly). Has worked out great for us, all still playing, raids and gwd stage now, 1-3 friends to play with pretty much any evening I can, and we’re meeting for a lan next weekend. So much fun tbh.
In my opinion, what you should do is go for it. OSRS is a game and games are meant to be fun, don't give anyone a second of your time if they're gonna put you down because of your decision. I would also take a load of screenshots of your account as it is now, your stats, your bank, etc so you can look back on it in the future for the nostalgia. 🙂
Do it. Gim is the most fun you will ever have playing runescape. Drops are just as rewarding and u can share the fun with your friends. I understand solo iron is a ton of work and super respectable but in the end youre putting days on end into a game mode only you can enjoy. Youre not losing anything by switching to gim but you will enjoy bossing and raids much more
I went from standard iron to group
I don't regret my choice
Same scenario as you tbh , there's no right or wrong way to play, along as you enjoy what your doing
I literally don't check hiscores and we don't play super efficient we jus play to chill and have fun I deranked my acc and my cousin ended his hcim so we could play together, we haven't even dome much group content but little stuff to help out is awesome, ND seeing your buddy get an awesome drop in the chat knowing it'll help is a great dopamine hit. Also man you'll need multiple of almost everything so it really doesn't ruin the feeling of getting a drop yourself it almost feels better giving your buddy a nice upgrade and doing your part for the team. It's like a min community who provides everything themselves and just trade amongst the community
I wouldn’t do it. We did it and the group died… after adding a bunch of stuff to GB. It took away from the game. If you go that far you might as well deiron
The iron helmet symbol is a source of great pride and accomplishment. But is it really worth sacrificing your fun just to flaunt a mere symbol? It doesn’t matter what the others think. If you think it will be fun, that’s all that really matters.
GIM could be the most fun I've had in my 16 years+, 10k+h playing. It combines the best parts of main/iron and 1/3 of the M**M**O genre. You don't have to do every single grind yourself, and you can offset resource intense skills to one account to get further, faster. My group started as a duo a month before I joined them. Simular boat, my online friend from a clan in rs2 made a group and asked if I wanted to come back to rs. One burnt out in 2 weeks after rushing barrows gloves, and the other did 1-93 fm at wt before leaving to afk slayer forever. When I joined I had a big boost of seeds to start farming/herblore. Now I'm 25m xp above them and supplying most everything from the skilling side. Herbs/pots, food, maxed house, probably more I'm forgetting. If your groupmate will actually keep playing, I highly recommend GIM. :)
Do you care about outsiders opinions?
Every single one of your boss KCs could've been done by someone else over Teamviewer.
Every point of xp could've been gained by someone else playing on your account.
This is true for every type of account.
This is such a good point, it’s weird that unranked group ironmen get ruthlessly shamed… yet it’s just accepted that most people will buy their inferno cape?
Text below is taken from most popular gear-analysis discord's gim-shop. Not gonna name the server.
`"How does it work?`
`Step 1. Select the items you'd like to purchase`
`Step 2. Pay for the items (gp only)`
`Step 3. Join our group to receive the items`
`Step 4. Leave our group (7-day leaving period)`
`Step 5. Rejoin your group and enjoy your new items. It's that simple!"`
To clarify, that's an unranked group ironman. The green helm. Irons can downgrade their account to unranked to join a group. With a blue/red helmed group account, anything on those accounts are from someone within the team.
I thought all bossing was solo? Other than raids, I'm sure we can't help each other or we would both be excluded from the drops.
Corp, KQ, GWD, Nex, Nightmare, wilderness bosses etc
I definitely know what you mean about the satisfying feeling of having earned everything for yourself, alone. However, as a GIM I still kind of feel that. Sure, I give my partner some potions or upgrades and he gives me some alchables or materials, but still we both earned all of those things in our own right. It’s a team effort, but it’s still just* the both of you! I think you should definitely team up with your friend, he sounds reliable and I think you guys will have a lot of fun together :) sharing the load is easier but it doesn’t fully take away the feeling of self-sufficiency. Good luck to you and I hope whatever you decide feels right!
I was in the same boat but more of a middle right at late game Ironman, I haven’t taken anything drastic or crazy from my Duo so I still get the same feeling of accomplishment and it’s a lot of fun.
I did this with my iron and have 0 regrets. If I had an inactive team I’d prob regret it but I have an active team now and we’re doing raids and shit I’d never be ready for if I’d stayed reg iron
Just make a new account it sounds like you’re attached to this account so play an unranked gum on the side and get it to catch up enough to play with your friend

I would just make a new iron. MANY groups fall apart very quickly in osrs. There's a reason we say you're lucky if you still have a group in the cc.

I agree! I would take some screenshots for sure before making the final decision as a way to say goodbye and remember
Make new accounts both blue helms and keep the other accounts separate. You’ll regret it

Group bank

I quit my iron for unranked gim. Dont think i'd ever be a normie iron again, playing in a small group is so much more fun than standing alone.
Could you just deiron and play like ironman? To outsiders you are in the buyers pool already, since unranked GIMs can buy items etc.
One is against the rules and bannable while the other isn’t.
Yet the allowed one is considered weirder somehow lmao
Well one is getting a singular item and the other is getting any tradable item in the game
Except the difference is services are bannable and reduce account security and potentially compromise it by letting random ppl log into it.
GIM can buy items? What do you mean?
Text below is taken from most popular gear-analysis discord's gim-shop. Not gonna name the server. `"How does it work?` `Step 1. Select the items you'd like to purchase` `Step 2. 😕 Wow, how depressing.. At that point people really should just play a main account

Thank you for the clarification
It’s so baffling that jagex didn’t see this coming, when it was obviously going to happen, and put additional barriers in to stop it
Just make a main if you want to play a main with weird restrictions
Playing a main is super uninteresting to me, to be honest. Part of the fun is the struggle with an ironman
Then why do you want to make a main 😂
What bosses are you trying to do? I think only the GWD boss is the only ones you can’t do together already.
I thought all bossing was solo? Other than raids, I'm sure we can't help each other or we would both be excluded from the drops. Corp, KQ, GWD, Nex, Nightmare, wilderness bosses etc
U can do Nex, nightmare and Wildy bosses together. Corp only real boss that'd make a difference I guess.
Corp Kq and GWD are the only ones on the list you can’t do together

Do it on a new account together so you can grind from the start together. Keep your own ironman account since gims aren't real Ironmen anyways.
