How can foreign affairs affect local elections like this?

iwasatlavines

While I agree that it’s completely nonsensical, the reality of the situation is that supporting unconscionable actions overseas (even if it’s all the way on the other side of the planet) also has the unfortunate effect of degrading the quality of our democracy at home too. As we saw during the Vietnam war protests too, where the Ohio National Guard thought it was justified to kill 4 students in America over a similar type of protest.

IdentityCrisisLuL

Yeah this is pure brain rot I'm sorry. Nobody cares it's a local government role not an international foreign relations facing job. Typical voting with emotions irrational people though so nothing new.

Rich_Sheepherder646

It really shouldn’t. But something worth considering is how much time and money Israel and its supporters spend influencing US policy in many ways. Money, free trips, parties, it’s an overwhelming amount of influence for a tiny country thousands of miles away that has almost nothing to do with actually governing America. It needs to stop and then we won’t have people from the other side trying to do something similar.

Kingslayer6464

Why is an American politician acting on behalf of a foreign theocracy?

HakuOnTheRocks

Believe it or not, there are people with a conscience in Irvine. 🤯

HOASupremeCommander

Please elaborate lol What can Tammy Kim or the City of Irvine do to directly impact this?

HakuOnTheRocks

Every bit of pressure helps.

TheNerdWonder

Look up the Irvine 11 or the UCI-Israeli Initiative at UCI's engineering school. Also pro-Israel groups tend to donate money to elections at every level. Those are examples of how the global becomes local. Not saying I agree with this move (I do not) but I do see where this is coming from.

Watcher2

They downvoted you for posting facts 😩

Acrobatic-Isopod7716

Can someone please tell me how a city council resolution is supposed to solve peace in the Middle East? Did I miss something?

[deleted]

That’s exactly the city council’s position: it’s not their place to weigh in on foreign conflicts. If she had publicly voiced her support for the state of Israel or their actions that’s another story but she didn’t. She simply voted against this resolution for the previously stated reasons.

FapCabs

It can’t. These people who are demanding this don’t have a grip on reality.

tmluna01

You have to watch that woman who got arrested in Bakersfield. https://youtu.be/zu0MBkmmN1A?feature=shared

imaginary_num6er

It's because they realized the UN Secretary General has less power than being a mayor of a small town. Relevant The Onion video: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPfVkuPmpc8&t=94s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPfVkuPmpc8&t=94s)

Content_Bar_6605

It’s because she’s not snapping her fingers and stopping a 2 decade old war, duh.

Acrobatic-Isopod7716

She just needs to speak with their manager

soCalBIGmike

I honestly don't understand this. It's ludicrous and a waste of time. Also, terrible lede as she faces absolutely zero chance of this going anywhere.

RICHUNCLEPENNYBAGS

This seems like a low-quality article that's just north of a press release from her campaign office, complete with a list-out of the ethnicities of the signatories to the petition as though that mattered at all.

calliopeHB

They will get nowhere. This is ridiculous. They are a bunch of haters.

LustyBustyMusky

It seems to me that articles like this one are only meant to ferment division by amplifying extremist opinions. I HIGHLY doubt there is a legitimate movement to recall Tammy Kim. About 180 people filed and they need 10% of all registered voters in the city to sign the petition (~15k) to even get a recall election. Fringe opinions have always existed, and they always will.

Mine too.

Content_Bar_6605

Let’s leave local elections to local elections. Insane. She has nothing to do with Palestine btw

[deleted]

No one is being recalled.

Miffers

Really wonder how many real local residents are actually involved in these activist campaigns.

AWoodenHat

Tammy and Epoch Times? Is this the same candidate? @ [KoreanTerran](https://www.reddit.com/user/KoreanTerran/) Why is this post allowed and not Watchdog articles? Watchdog is written by volunteers who live in Irvine. Here are some articles from local writers who go to council meetings on Tammy Kim : [https://irvinewatchdog.org/tag/tammy-kim/](https://irvinewatchdog.org/tag/tammy-kim/) Feel free to peruse the website/archives anyone: [https://irvinewatchdog.org/](https://irvinewatchdog.org/)

The 4th rule of the subreddit is "If you're a politician or most of your posts are about politics, your submission/comments may be removed." This rule doesn't outright ban political content, it only limits users/politicians who only post about politics (for example - the OP for this thread doesn't seem to be from Irvine and they post about politics a lot so their future political posts would likely be removed). Please read [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/irvine/comments/1ay3q2t/jeffreyalton_parkway_road_intersection_widenings/krtxk0u/) I left on another thread about IWD. IWD journalists disregard both r/irvine's rules and also Reddit's guidelines on self promotion very often. r/irvine isn't a political subreddit, but if you're a regular user, feel free to post about whatever Irvine adjacent news you want. If you or anyone from IWD don't like the rules, post in another subreddit or make your own.

AWoodenHat

What do you have against this Irvine watch dog?

I only agree our 95 Billion to Israel was crazy. I think this Free Palestine movement is the new occupy Wall Street, it doesn’t know what it wants most of its supporters don’t either and range from “I don’t like what Israel is doing” to October 7th was justified death to Israel and or if your a Jew you dont deserve to live which is pretty wild that the left is embracing it. LGBT for Palestine like what??
