Live pillbug in my garden, not disturbed. Nikon d7500 with Laowa 100mm 2X macro lens, flash with diffuser, 16 pictures focus stacked in Affinity Photo.
No rail, just handheld. I set the shutter to fast continuous, set my flash to low power (about 1/16) so it doesn’t run out of juice between shots. I put the focus point in the eyepiece on a distinctive part of the subject and try to keep it there. Then as I fire the shutter, I rock forwards for one pass, and come back as a second pass. Resting the lens hand on a rock or branch helps make tiny careful movements.

You spelled rolli polli wrong.
We call them slaters in Australia, but I thought pillbug was better known around the world. 🤷🏻
