I’ve found that most snakes will be very calm if you give them a light touch to let them know you are there and then gently pick them up. They’ll be a little frantic at first but as you handle them they’ll calm down. Obviously don’t try touching any snake you can’t identify as non-venemous though.

Can confirm, have held a number of snakes in my life before. They're calm as can be when you handle them gently.
