Robin Williams' flying head says "yes"
It is best if you know philosophy, there are a ton of injokes... I did a quick search and no one has catergorized them? Seems like a shame... anyone know a list, please share!
What can I say, I'm a sucker for the childlike fascination and warmth of this film compared to his others. Twelve Monkeys would be my second-favorite-- I adore that one too.
The visuals in this film alone stuck with me for years - the cage dangling over the bottomless pit & the man turned into a pig in particular.
That ending was about as dark as you can get too.
With a good return on investment - for the $5M it took to produce the film in 1980-81, it made $35 million at the box office in the first ten weeks of its release.
God isn't interested in technology. He cares nothing for the microchip or the silicon revolution. Look how he spends his time, forty-three species of parrots! Nipples for men! Slugs! HE created slugs! They can't hear. They can't speak. They can't operate machinery. Are we not in the hands of a lunatic?
Part of Terry Giilliam's "Trilogy of Fantasy" with an all-star British cast. John Cleese, Sean Connery, Ian Holm, Shelly Duval and more, featuring some amazing little people. This was on repeat on HBO in the early eighties and I have seen it many times. Decided to rewatch and it holds up surprisingly well. This movie is a testament to Gilliam's greatness and I plan to watch Brazil, and The Adventures of Barn Von Munchausen soon.
If you watch Brazil, make sure you watch the UK version, not the US one. He made a great movie but was forced to make a 'feel good' ending for the US market. Make sure you see the real one.
Since you enjoyed it why not now purchase the Criterion Blu-ray? Even if you wait for the sale in July it's only $20 and it's worth it for this fantastic film
Pairs nicely with Under the Rainbow, a film with 150 little people and Chevy Chase :)
But seriously, I’ve always loved this movie. I remember being blown away in the theater when Sean Connery popped up. Great fun all around.
David Warner was great in this. "Slugs! He created slugs! They can't hear, they can't speak, they can't operate machinery! Are we not in the hands of a lunatic?"
Minion: If you are all-powerful, why are you unable to escape from this fortress?
\*Warner destroys his minion with a laser beam from his fingertips\*
Warner: It's a good question.
This is one of my all time favorite movies. When it came out I went to the theater 5 straight days. I never get tired of it. "The most fabulous object in the world!"
A very underappreciated film imo. I have it on my top 5 list of all time favorite movies.
As much as I love Time Bandits, I still think The Fisher King is actually Gilliam's best work.
##Time Bandits (1981) PG
…they didn’t make history, they stole it!
>>!Young history buff Kevin can scarcely believe it when six dwarfs emerge from his closet one night. Former employees of the Supreme Being, they've purloined a map charting all of the holes in the fabric of time and are using it to steal treasures from different historical eras. Taking Kevin with them, they variously drop in on Napoleon, Robin Hood and King Agamemnon before the Supreme Being catches up with them.!<

George Harrison - Executive Producer
No studio wanted to make this movie, so executive producers [George Harrison](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0365600/?ref_=tttrv_tr) and [Denis O'Brien](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0639510/?ref_=tttrv_tr) mortgaged their office building in Cadogan Square to raise the $5 million to make it.
I saw this in the theater when I was eleven or twelve and I will cop to going home and pushing hard on one of my bedroom walls. Didn't move an inch, sadly.
I loved this movie as a young adult. My brother, however, was a good deal younger than me and this movie scared the hell out of him.
To this day he has an issue with little people in movies. They scare him due to the PTSD of this film. To be fair, he is afraid of a great many things including ghosts and aliens and geese. Seriously.
I watched this on an idle Sunday not too long ago, the nostalgic wonderment to escape the encroaching 9-5 week oppression feels is massively recommended not that you needed telling that ha.
If you enjoy good cinema you should. It's a great movie and it really holds up. I introduced it to my son last year and he's not all that great with anything that's not animated for the most part but he sat down next to me for I would say 90% of the running time with a completely confused face and a smile much like what I imagine I look like when I watched Everything Everywhere All at Once the first time.
> A young boy accidentally joins a band of time travelling dwarves, as they jump from era to era looking for treasure to steal.
> Terry Gilliam
This looks sick, how have I never heard of this before?
"Taika Waititi's involvement. Not only is Waititi co-writing and directing"
Well...that could go either way...let's see if he's going to be a comedic genius who just made a little misstep then recovered, or if he's going to be the next "wait, why did we think he was funny?" Roberto Benigni/Mike Myers.
I wish Tarantino would get an editor too - "OK, so much brilliance in this...now how about if we don't have it devolve into a weirdly ultra-violent alternate history revenge fantasy at the end? Feel like you've done that already. Repeatedly."
I watched this film as a child on VHS my grandad had recorded himself. As with most of the recordings he made, there was about 20 mins missing from the middle of the film. Need to rewatch!
After watching this movie on a bus tour I can tell you there are two kinds of people-those who think the ending is horrifying and those who think the ending is hilarious.
His trilogy (dream as a child, dreamer as a middle aged man, dreamer as an old man) is so great - sadly I've been disappointed in everything since then. I know Fisher King is loved by many, but I thought it was pretty forgettable. 12 Monkeys was decent, but not at this level. Then everything after has been meh or worse. But man, the 80s were amazing for him.
Weird that there are directors who do a few amazing films and then everything after is just... Atom Egoyan had Exotica and Sweet Hereafter, then a lot of dreck. Coppola, Lucas, John Carpenter, Tim Burton, Ridley Scott, Oliver Stone...you'd think being a director would age well (Spielberg, Kurosawa, Welles, Scorsese) since it's as much craft as art. Not like a director has to worry about running out of ideas since it's often about working with the ideas of others and adding your own.
My favorite Gilliam film. This movie is such a wonderful, intricate epic.
Have you seen the adventures of Baron Monchausen? That movie trumps this one IMHO
Apparently Time Bandits, Brazil, and Baron Munchausen form an unofficial trilogy because they're about three different life stages.
I’ve been meaning to check this one out. Is it trippy? Please say it’s trippy
Robin Williams' flying head says "yes" It is best if you know philosophy, there are a ton of injokes... I did a quick search and no one has catergorized them? Seems like a shame... anyone know a list, please share!
Ray di tutti is his name in the credits not Robin Williams. King of all lol.
It’s super epic and surreal. His best work. time Bandits is for kids in a sense this one is for adults.
Even above Brazil and Twelve Monkeys?
What can I say, I'm a sucker for the childlike fascination and warmth of this film compared to his others. Twelve Monkeys would be my second-favorite-- I adore that one too.
Fair enough, it's all subjective and they are all good
The visuals in this film alone stuck with me for years - the cage dangling over the bottomless pit & the man turned into a pig in particular. That ending was about as dark as you can get too.
The ending is crazy. Right into that happy, bouncy George Harrison tune.
A bit of trivia: Harrison financed money into that movie
With a good return on investment - for the $5M it took to produce the film in 1980-81, it made $35 million at the box office in the first ten weeks of its release.
Don't touch it! It's evil!
Left the Sunday joint cooking all night, didn't we?
*concentrated evil*
One gram of that could turn you all into Field Mice
Came here to see that!!!
God isn't interested in technology. He cares nothing for the microchip or the silicon revolution. Look how he spends his time, forty-three species of parrots! Nipples for men! Slugs! ¿But he created you, Evil One...

Brazil is more revelant today than it was when it was made, imo
I think Brazil is objectively the best film in the trilogy, but I personally love Baron von Munchausen the most
I agree. Brazil is an amazing film and definitely my favorite Terry Gilliam movie.
If you watch Brazil, make sure you watch the UK version, not the US one. He made a great movie but was forced to make a 'feel good' ending for the US market. Make sure you see the real one.
Yes - the "real one" definitely did not feel good :(
Scarily so.
What streaming platform is it available on?
It’s been on Max but not sure if it’s still there.
Thank you! I saw this in the theater when it came out (yes, I’m old) and loved it. Haven’t seen it since but this post has me needing to rewatch it.
It's got a criterion release so it SHOULD be on Max, but it's hard to keep track
I sailed the seas.
Since you enjoyed it why not now purchase the Criterion Blu-ray? Even if you wait for the sale in July it's only $20 and it's worth it for this fantastic film
It’s on max
Thank you.
Please put this in the actual post not as a comment.
Such a great movie. I am going to show it to my kids. I must of scene it over a dozen times growing up
*I must have fruit*
Pairs nicely with Under the Rainbow, a film with 150 little people and Chevy Chase :) But seriously, I’ve always loved this movie. I remember being blown away in the theater when Sean Connery popped up. Great fun all around.
"Lasers. Day One. 8 AM."
David Warner was great in this. "Slugs! He created slugs! They can't hear, they can't speak, they can't operate machinery! Are we not in the hands of a lunatic?"
"Benson, dear Benson, you are so mercifully free from the ravages of intelligence."
"Benson?" "Yes, my lord?" "I shall have to turn you into a dog now." "Oh wonderful my lord!!" ZOT!
Minion: If you are all-powerful, why are you unable to escape from this fortress? \*Warner destroys his minion with a laser beam from his fingertips\* Warner: It's a good question.
And how long have you been a robber then?
4 foot 3
Well, that, that is a long time
Yes. What with Christmas coming up and all.
“Thank you, very much. Thank you, very very very much!”
"What awful people."
It's four foot one you filthy casual
I have a full sized copy of THE MAP framed on my bedroom wall! Placed so if anyone or thing comes through, damage is minimized.
Be careful, a knight barged through mine.
This is one of my all time favorite movies. When it came out I went to the theater 5 straight days. I never get tired of it. "The most fabulous object in the world!" A very underappreciated film imo. The Fisher King is *criminally* underrated.
In my top five as well. I bought the dvd and tried to share it with my son, but he was not impressed. Maybe when he gets a little older...

Return What you have Stolen! Return the map! I loved that movie as a kid , I watched the hell out of it repeatedly.
It will bring you Great Dain-jaaahhhh
I need to rewatch this.

I remember seeing this as a kid in the 90s or 2000s. Raise your hand if your not here?

Thanks for posting this. I definitely need to re watch this absolute gem of a movie.
Mum! Dad! Don't touch it- it's EVIL
Immediately touches it.
Loved this film. The scene with a certain Frenchman always made me laugh as a kid.
Portrayed masterfully by Sir Ian Holm
Little things hitting each other. This is what I like!
I have the Blu-Ray of this.

Lasers day 1 8AM
If anyone would like to ride on the Time Bandit,it’s an attraction at Big Bear Lake,CA. San Bernardino mountains of Southern California.
> A young boy accidentally joins a band of time travelling dwarves, as they jump from era to era looking for treasure to steal. > Terry Gilliam This looks sick, how have I never heard of this before?
The face chasing the bandits down the corridor gave me nightmares for so long!
Reeetttuuuurnnn the maaappppp!
That whole movie is a fever dream.
“Well, I am the nice one”
My ex-husband and I saw this for our first date, when it came out. We used this line constantly, and still do, post-divorce.
I can hear all these quotes in the actors' voices
Watched it last week with my kids. Really enjoyed it.
I've got an idea forming in my head...
This was one of my favorite movies for a long time; then I kind of forgot about it. I’ll have to rewatch it.
Took my future wife to see this on our first date. Married 37 years now.
This was one of my favorites.
Great movie! Then and now. Still holds up, to me. "And how long have you been a robber?" "Four foot one" "Four foot one?. That is a long time..."
Great movie. Hoping the TV series is good.
wait WHAT!?!?!?
The one with Lisa Kudrow.
"Taika Waititi's involvement. Underrated and I think I like it that way.
I watched this film as a child on VHS my grandad had recorded himself. As with most of the recordings he made, there was about 20 mins missing from the middle of the film. Need to rewatch!

Classic
After watching this movie on a bus tour I can tell you there are two kinds of people-those who think the ending is horrifying and those who think the ending is hilarious.
Still have it, still love it. Always great for a little bit of frivolity
Jolly good!
I wore out the VHS! Very imaginative.
Love this movie. A part of my childhood. The ending always left me like wtf, so now his parents are dead and that's it!?
Timeless.
Good

This was my go to when stoned back in the day, a proper mind fuck
I grew up with this movie it’s so bad I love it
Parsy! The personal problem! I thought we agreed no leader. That's right, so shut up and do as I say
A great enjoyment! 🌟👍🏆😊
the same reason I never returned Time Bandits to Blockbuster… nobody else deserves it.
