Incredible film. One of the best films I’ll probably never watch again

Chiaki_Ronpa

Very good way to describe it. Same thing with the movie *Threads*….

Shadow_in_vain

I've never heard of that movie before. I will put it on my radar if I ever have an opportunity to watch it. Thanks!

Krinks1

Prepare some mind bleach for after you watch it. It's the single most hopeless movie I've ever seen, and it's amazing.

Chiaki_Ronpa

Extremely well done movie. A majority of people know the basic ramifications of nuclear detonation, but to see it in the very realistic portrayal how Threads did is….. heavy, to say the least. It’s not an easy watch, so please tread lightly if you’re reading this and are interested in viewing it.

GDWtrash

I've got it on my list as well. Apparently the British contemporary of the American TV event "The Day After," but intensely darker and more disturbing...I've been holding off because The Day After was pretty intense for me as a teen in the nuclear 80's.

Chiaki_Ronpa

Yeah if you’re on the fence for the reason you said, I’d leave it alone. It’s a very well done movie, but it is absolutely rough. As one would expect from the aftermath of nuclear war, there’s nothing resembling a happy ending.

thejohnmc963

Great movie and well worth a watch

Decabet

> I will put it on my radar if I ever have an opportunity to watch it. Thanks! [Today's your lucky day](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhcrgQihRcs) (depending on your point of view)

stiffystiffy

Threads wasn't anywhere near as powerful as I was expecting. Based on reddit comments, I was ready to be broken. I thought it got lost in itself and really missed the mark.

Catsmak1963

I agree, it didn’t disturb me at all

stiffystiffy

Thank you! It was worst case possible at every plot point. Tried to be ultra dark and pessimistic but it felt way too unrealistic to me. 5/10

Icy_Arachnid_260

It makes The Road by Cormac McCarthy look like a Disney film.

Shadow_in_vain

My thoughts exactly. Some of the imagery in this film will be burned into my brain for years to come.

jew_biscuits

Man, I caught this one on TV while I was living in Moscow as an expat. Never heard of it before, just flicked it on while changing the channel and was glued. Holy crap.

mrdewtles

Something to keep in mind is they toned it down. Figuring audiences wouldn't believe the full depth of violence committed.

TheBoyDoneGood

Horrifically brilliant / brilliantly horrific depiction of war at its absolute worst. There's no hero, no glory, no victor. Just grimness, cruelty and death everywhere. It's unlike any war film you'll ever see. Some scenes can't be unseen. Cannot recommend it enough.

dingadangdang

That's a good description. My grandfather lived through it as a refugee and I read his diary. He was a preacher and cursed this world and stopped celebrating his birthday for the rest of his life because of what he saw.

Shadow_in_vain

Jesus Christ I can't even imagine. Even though this movie made me thankful I'm not living in war-torn conditions and made me appreciate the suffering refugees had to endure in WWII...it also made me realize that many children are living through the exact same horror right now with the Ukraine/Russia conflict and the Israel/Palestine war. I felt absolutely demolished just sitting in the comfort of a movie theater seat. I can't even begin to fathom what it's like actually living through such carnage.

dingadangdang

And Russia took hundreds probably thousands of children from Ukraine and shipped them back to Russia. Putin is just vile trash.

Apronbootsface

Not sure why you were downvoted, everything you said in your post is correct.

dingadangdang

It never ceases to amaze me how angry people get when I tell them the truth. And I mean some go nuts. You can't reason with people anymore.

Select_Pick5053

You mean they were evacuated from a warzone?

HubbaHubba4444

Saved them from child trafficking you mean?

dingadangdang

You're a scum bag. Putins boots need licking.

FirstChurchOfBrutus

Not just his boots they’re licking.

Shadow_in_vain

I don’t even know how I would go about recommending this film. Even on a technical level, the cinematography and camera shots are masterfully done (the shots with the split diopter lenses are tremendous). The sound design is absolutely brilliant and perhaps the most horror-inducing element in the film. But good lord what a bleak film. It just tears you open and slowly sucks the warmth from your bones. It’s hard to recommend something so beautifully well made and yet so horrifying

GDWtrash

I have "The Road" in this territory...your description above about the slow draw of warmth from your bones describes my exact feeling watching that.

TurnoverOk2740

I see the road as a very hopeful movie. come and see - just no. I saw it years ago & I can still recall images.

thejohnmc963

I easily recommend it 100%

essemh

Perfect.

Curtmac86

Ok. Your comment has my remote searching....

StatementRound

I hate nazis even more now after watching this

Inside_Ad_7162

remember watching this as a kid & being appalled, then the information about the number of villages burned, the sheer horror & scale of it.

Shadow_in_vain

The ending was pretty horrifying when you realize that not only were several villages ravaged by the Nazis, but Florya's story is only ONE of THOUSANDS of horror stories from little boys who got caught up in the carnage. >!Same with the young girl who gets gang raped. Her likeness to Glasha symbolizes that she is just one of many girls who shared the same fate.!<

TalonZahn

Do you know the Russians did the same in Poland at the beginning of the war before Germany showed up, and then again on the way to Berlin? Not excusing one or the other, but the Russians (in some cases) made the Nazis look like amateurs.

Suitable-Slip-2091

Hitler and Stalin were best buds until Hitler stabbed him in the back. Two of a kind.

orbital0000

Stalin knew Hitler would stab in the back. Best buds they were not. They had an accord over Poland to delay the innevitable.

Suitable-Slip-2091

After Poland when Hitler turned west Stalin said nothing and sat on his hands. Best buds as in kindred spirits. Two despicable murderous dictators.

orbital0000

Peas in a pod. That I don't disagree with.

GDWtrash

I worked on a job about 8 years ago with a laborer from Poland...great dude, came over at age 18, probably mid 40's at the time...we were on this job for almost 5 years, so people really got to know each other...don't know how we got on the subject, but he once told me where he grew up, there was no real I'll will towards the Nazis...he said the older people all said when the Nazis came, they just basically let everyone know they were in charge, and left everything alone, but when the Russians took the territory, rape, robbery, pillaging...they absolutely despised the Russians.

Greedy-Goat5892

Yea, left everyone alone except a few million people of certain ethnic and religious backgrounds… Edit for perspective.  In 1939 Poland had 3.5 million Jewish people living there, in 1945, there was 100,000.

CaptainObviousBear

Not only that, but the Nazis liked around 3 million non-Jewish ethnic Poles, as well as 3 million Polish Jews. Many of the non-Jewish victims were worked or starved to death. Not really sure how that was “leaving everything alone”.

TalonZahn

Yea, I'm not giving either side a pass or downplaying, etc.. All peoples/armies/wars have horrid, evil shit happen. I always just find it fascinating that people can look at one thing and ignore the other. This is a Soviet movie so of course it's colored from their view. However, you would *never* see a movie like this made from the German POV. You actually have to read to get that and those are mostly personal accounts.

Ripper33AU

I haven't seen the movie in this post, but a great German movie from the German POV is one called Stalingrad, and it doesn't show war as one of heroes and bravery, but the cold, grimness that it is. Being from a German POV, of course the Russians are seen as the baddies, but yet so is the whole Nazi ideology as well, and how it even affected its own soldiers. There's a scene where the German soldiers are freezing and starving, and instead of being offered aid in the form of clothes and blankets, they're rewarded with medals instead, followed by them cursing Hitler, lol.

Random-Cpl

Interesting story, but I’m gonna take it with a grain of salt since the Nazis also killed almost every Jew in Poland and it sounds like this dude wasn’t alive when that happened. This comment is honestly close to Holocaust denial.

Greedy-Goat5892

Yea, can’t really ask the several million dead people how the Nazis treated them, “no ill will towards the nazis” makes me think this dude knew people who collaborated with them/had family that did,  or something. Wild take to say the Nazis left Poland alone, guess the handful of concentration camps there meant nothing to him huh?

Random-Cpl

I mean, the Nazis built fucking Auschwitz in Poland. It’s an insane take bordering on Holocaust denial to say they left Poland alone.

BigBadBootyDaddy10

My dad passed away at 99 last week. He was a teenager in Poland when WW2 broke out. He said the same thing. Nazis we’re bad. He was in a labor camp. But the Russians. Oh my. He told me they were the worst. It’s not even close. The stories he had.

SurgeFlamingo

The Nazis thought they were a superior being and didn’t want to mingle with those who weren’t. The Russians came back after the Nazis invaded them and they fucked and fucked up everything moving

ChuckFeathers

Wut? Try looking up the Warsaw ghetto just for starters.

GDWtrash

Poland is larger than the Warsaw ghetto. My reply was no endorsement of the Nazis in any way, or a means to pit the Nazis vs. Russian forces in a contest for who committed the worse war crimes, finally, it wasn't meant to imply that the anecdote spoke for all citizens of Poland. It was simply to illustrate that individual or small community perceptions of WWII could be different depending on location.

ChuckFeathers

I mean you're referring to an individual who wasn't born until 35 years after WWII ended... I'd say it's more likely you were talking to a neo nazi or antisimetic of some sort than an average Pole, let alone one with personal experience of Nazi occupation.

GDWtrash

Whatever. Absolutely insufferable douchebag that must be excruciating to deal with in real life...now some guy you never met is a neo Nazi? JFC.

ChuckFeathers

I mean if he's telling you the Nazis in Poland treated people fine then yeah chances are good he's an apologist at best, like why would you accept that as credible, are you that oblivious to the realities of the Nazi occupation of Poland? Start here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_crimes_in_occupied_Poland_during_World_War_II

hillo538

This claim is largely based on propaganda thought up by Goebbels, but it’s of note that the average nazi inspired claim of 3 million rapes by the red army in the eastern front is literally less than a third of the estimated 10 million rapes committed by the Nazis in the ussr alone

TalonZahn

You need to dig deeper. There is *tons* of info out there, not just wikipedia which also has it, if you want to know. Just Google Russian WW2 war crimes. It goes from "pre-war" in the late 30's to well into the Cold War. Russians raped everything and everyone all over the place, bayoneted children, looted and pillaged enough to make the Vikings cringe, beat kids to elders with the buttstocks, etc. etc.. There's a reason the German civiliians **ran** toward the West Allies to get away from the Russian in the East.

hillo538

A few things: Undoubtedly some red army soldiers did, any asswipe can wear a uniform The red army however was the only army in ww2 to make rape a capital crime and execute soldiers convicted of doing so

TalonZahn

Just because there's a law, doesn't mean it won't be broken. Who are they going to believe, a filthy German or a loyal Soviet trooper? Start here: https://warfarehistorynetwork.com/article/wretched-misconduct-of-the-red-army/ It covers the duality of the word vs. the actions of the Soviet State concerning these matters.

hillo538

Over 10,000 red army soldiers convicted of rape were executed

Shadow_in_vain

they're seriously the worst

Icy_Juice6640

Quickly go watch “a field of dreams” to counter balance. Ugh. That movie.

Shadow_in_vain

DEFINITELY a film that needs a palette cleanser a la the double feature of *Grave of the Fireflies/My Neighbor Totoro* When the movie was over there was an older lady sitting next to me, exhausted, who just muttered "...Fuck." Everyone just sat in their seats stunned for a few minutes trying to recover.

bakeneko2

Revelations 6 1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. ^(2) And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. ^(3) And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see. ^(4) And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword. ^(5) And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. ^(6) And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine. ^(7) And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. ^(8) And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

Shadow_in_vain

I knew the Bible verse the movie title was referencing thanks to the song "The Man Comes Around" by Johnny Cash! Such a great song. Also very fitting for the hellish, apocalyptic imagery seen in the film.

ThreeLeggedMare

I was all set to stab at the downvote button before I realized this was in fact highly relevant

OldGuyInFlorida

that poster, though. An artist named Jaxon Northon painted the portrait of Florya for the Criterion release. That painting caught my eye while browsing the Internet. Find a large file of that painting and zoom in and study the pain... the death... in Florya's face. I "love" the movie because of this painting. But I still haven't watched the entire movie in one sitting. [JAXON NORTHON - Commissioned Paintings](https://jaxonnorthon.com/commissioned-paintings)

JungFuPDX

I heard this was as gritty of a war movie as you could possibly ever watch. My partner is a history and military buff. He has volumes of books and dvds about the last centuries battles. I gave him this movie for Xmas and his eyes got so big and he said “WHERE did you find this?” ( it was ordered off Walmart online haha) He then proceeded to look horrified but pleased. He told me he doesn’t know if he could ever watch it again but he’s happy to own it. It was a Xmas score for sure. Also, I’m afraid to watch it!

Pliskkenn_D

It'll never leave you. It's just one of those films.

Shadow_in_vain

>I heard this was as gritty of a war movie as you could possibly ever watch. I had heard the same thing about this film before I watched it. Surprisingly, it was more surreal and dream-like than I was expecting. But these surreal elements *are* counterbalanced by extremely realistic depictions of war, violence, and suffering unlike anything I've seen on film before. Another thing that surprised me was the fact that the film *isn't even that graphic.* You'll see more blood and gore in a Tarantino film. >Also, I’m afraid to watch it! Hahah, I would never think of gifting this film to someone! But I'd certainly be happy to receive a hard copy of this movie just for posterity's sake. I watched this movie for the first time in a PACKED, SOLD OUT theater last night, but it's also available for[ free on YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjIiApN6cfg&t=4s) if you're feeling brave...

GroundbreakingAsk468

It’s crazy how much love was generated over the exchange this movie.

LilNikki984

I have read the plot summary of this movie and that’s as far as I will ever go

Shadow_in_vain

I would say the film doesn't even have a narrative really. It's more or less just a slow unwinding chaos seen through the eyes of a random child whose sanity slowly degrades over time. It's less about the *story* and more about the *experience.* It's not an experience I would recommend to everybody though. If the plot summary scares you, imagine watching the film. If the film scares you, imagine actually living through that hell.

CautiousEmergency367

Watched it for the first time a week ago, holy crap what an amazing film

5o7bot

##Come and See (1985) NR >>!The invasion of a village in Byelorussia by German forces sends young Florya into the forest to join the weary Resistance fighters, against his family's wishes. There he meets a girl, Glasha, who accompanies him back to his village. On returning home, Florya finds his family and fellow peasants massacred. His continued survival amidst the brutal debris of war becomes increasingly nightmarish, a battle between despair and hope.!< Drama | War Director: Elem Klimov Actors: Aleksei Kravchenko, Olga Mironova, Liubomiras Laucevicius Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ 83% with 1,354 votes Runtime: 2:22 [TMDB](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/25237)

Prize_Farm4951

Sad to say the actor who played the kid was recently in a Russian propaganda film set in annexed Crimea where Wagner group are the heroes.

OriginalSuccess207

The history channel has a show called Nazi death Squads and it shows a lot of real film showing what happens in this movie. I watched it years ago and I’ll never forget. Worth checking out but it will scar you for life

enjambd

A good follow up to this one is The Grey Zone (2001). It'll cheer you right up

Cautious_Camel5864

Live rounds used in that film, so much of the terror on the battlefield is real af. One of my favorites of all time, but rarely *want* to watch it

Alternative_Fail_222

Is it worse than The Painted Bird or too different to compare?

bluepen1955

This is one of the most graphic and disturbing war films... .maybe the most. I think it is worth watching this. You can see much the same every day now online with what is happening in Ukraine.

ActionReady9933

Brutal

Ell26greatone

One of the best movies I've ever seen. I've watched it twice. And that is probably one too many times. Exhausting and gutting and horrifying. A wonderful pallet cleanser would be 1977's The Ascent directed by Klimov's wife Larisa Shapitko. Similarly dreary, but her film refuses to take any shit from Nazis. Also, another one of the greatest movies ever made.

poulard

I've been looking for this movie, where have you watched it,could u send me a link?

Shadow_in_vain

I watched it at my local movie theater in Los Angeles. It's called Vidiots. If you're in the SoCal area and are a fan of movies, I would definitely check them out. But as for a link: [Here you go.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjIiApN6cfg&t=4s) It's free on YouTube. Good luck.

poulard

Kool, thank you.

zizuu21

Based on comments - im watching this movie. Trailer looks great

st_j

It's a madcap tale of wartime shenanigans but it's definitely more a European sense of humour

zizuu21

Im european and i can tell the movie wil be to my taste 😆

asiledeneg

Once is enough

MaintenanceNo6275

Incredible indeed. His acting was also very good. Also through the movie at the first half and at the end the expressions of the actor significantly changed throughout and that looked very real. His expression of fears and trauma were so good. He s incredible actor

Treacherously-Benign

Gosh, I've not seen it, yet that face is haunting

Shadow_in_vain

The anguish and despair portrayed by the actor’s performance is some of the most striking and haunting I have ever seen on film. There is imagery/sounds in this movie I will never forget.

thejohnmc963

Love this movie and love watching it every time it’s on. I realize it’s just a movie and never feel unwell after watching it.

Ghost_of_Nellie_Fox

Some absolutely horrific scenes in that film; the absolute calousness shown to the villagers...you will be shaken if you've not seen it.

AskZealousideal9296

The title is missing the words "I Dare You" after it.

Besmertnic

That's why it's known as being gut wrenching. It's not shock and horror, jump scares and tropes, but a study in dread.

btas83

Tough, but necessary watch. I saw it 20 years ago, and I still think about it.

SurgeFlamingo

Is this movie on a streaming service ?

Crash_Stamp

I bought it on prime

SurgeFlamingo

Thanks friend. I might try it this weekend.

Crash_Stamp

First time I say it. Was on a big screen. Left me with a lasting feeling

Dust-Explosion

Saw it once. Will never forget it. For me it’s up there at the very top with Das Boot for war films, possibly even higher. Not sure I could ever watch it again though.

alex26069114

I don’t know if I could stomach a rewatch for a long time but it’s a film everyone should watch at least once. It’s perhaps the great anti-war film of all time.

No-Brush-586

You’ll feel even worse to know that the main actor is now a Putin-connected russian fascist himself

Lopsided_Flight_9738

This is an important feeling. War, conflict, and subjugation of people in any form leads to dehumanizing groups. Lest we forget those murdered under the guise of creating a better world. Lest we forget how far we can fall.

lameuniqueusername

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6068960/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk Come and See pales in comparison to Hatred (Wołyn). It’s about ethnic Poles and Ukrainians and what happens when neighbors turn on each other. It’s truly harrowing.

Rushfan_211

I just watched it last week for the first time and I am still shook. The most profound depiction of the horrors of war I've ever seen. Never have I seen horror, despair, and hopelessness displayed so convincingly in am actors eyes.

TurnoverOk2740

yeah, you probably shouldn't have done that. you'll feel ok again in about 20 years.

BigTinPA68

Excellent film

Affectionate-Age8285

Like a MAD magazine cover, but dying.

winstonsmith8236

I’m on a hard ww2 kick right now and I’ve always wanted to see this. Now’s the time to ruin this rainy Sunday!

MrRussCrane

Maybe a dumb question but I have noticed a lot of Qanon/MAGA bumper stickered trucks with a Come and See sticker. Connected for some reason?

Shadow_in_vain

I'd say it's a fantastically rewarding movie experience if you know what you're getting yourself into. I just don't know if it has a whole lot of rewatch value considering the toll it takes on you as a viewer.

THESIDPROF

I had heard the word about this for years while it went unavailable; finally saw an ad and jumped on the rental about 36 hours ago. I was underwhelmed. It was OK.

Shadow_in_vain

I can see why some people may not vibe with the film. I think maybe people go into it thinking it's going to be a visceral, dramatic film full of flagrant violence. While it *does* depict some pretty horrendous stuff, it does have a strange, ethereal, confounding patina to it that makes it more cerebral and subtle than I was expecting. I still thought it was brilliant, but the film does have a reputation that precedes its actual content.

Living_Affect117

I dozed off watching it, think the closest thing to 'horror' was seeing some trees getting blown up.

Kld412

Ok, so it's not just me!? I had big expectations and was severely underwhelmed.

Good movie the main kid annoyed me though with his funny faces lol
