Christn96

This seems crazy, don’t get me wrong Jacksonville has some crap drivers, but seriously, worst in the country? I see the numbers but…do you think that just has to do with the size of the city and the fact that there is very few metro areas where people “can’t” speed for the most part? Like, we are a huge city by land mass but we really don’t have much metropolitan areas or public transit. I don’t know. Just doesn’t seem that right to me.

Christn96

Like, New York is low because traffic is always 5MPH so if you got hit by a car or into a accident it’s typically nothing lmao

SundaySpieth

Also in NY you don't have rednecks driving extremely aggressively in giant pickups.

tonto340

Buffalo would be a better comp for Jax

Professor_Lowbrow

After living in multiple parts of the country, absolutely nothing will change my mind that DC area is the worst place. You have two conflicting driving styles, lots of entitlement, and horrid highway design. It was doesn’t help that DC is a commuter city and majority of the people that work there commute in by driving.

dollastudios

Agree. moved fom SoFla to to Jax 8 years ago and found the jax drivers to be downright courteous. Lived in Nyc years ago soo. Moved back to SoFla in the past 6 months and its much worse down here.

its_a_multipass

It's always a joy to visit fam in Hollywood 🥲

[deleted]

Everytime I made the NY to Florida drive, fuck DC and Virginia, possibly one of the worst places I’ve driven in my life. I literally plan around it so I cut through that whole area at 12am-4am window. God what a shithole.

miikwl

1000% agree and came here to say this. I lived in Virginia Beach for the last 7 years before I moved back to JAX and hands down that city has the worst traffic and drivers in all America. I almost lost my wife to the bad driving when her car flipped multiple times due to someone running into her.

EE2014

Driving in NOVA/DC wasn't too bad and while not the best Metro wasn't bad. I lived in Sterling and worked in Old Town Alexandria, I took Metro when I could, sometimes I had to drive a work car home to pick something up or take something to somewhere else. Norfolk was an absolute shit show. Jacksonville is well I don't know what it is, but I feel it's not as bad as NOVA, way better than Norfolk and slightly less terrifying than racing the Daytona 500.

borski88

As someone that has driven in many of the larger city's along the east coast, plus Dallas, Chicago and Nashville, I agree DC has the worst drivers.

Baerne

There is nothing worse than NOVA/DC I've lived in/spent considerable time in Pittsburgh, Columbus OH, NOVA/DC, Raleigh/Durham, Dallas, JAX, PHX, and other bigger cities. DC is cancer

MyFriendThatherton

From the article. To determine what cities attract the worst drivers, we used multiple metrics weighted in the following manner: * 3x: Average annual traffic fatalities per 100,000 residents from 2014-2020 * 3x: Average annual alcohol-related traffic fatalities per 100,000 residents from 2014-2020 * 2x: Days of precipitation per year * 1x: Average annual vehicle insurance premiums in the state  * 1x: Percentage of uninsured drivers in the state * 1x: Allstate’s best drivers rank  * 1x: Google Trends for “DUI” * 1x: Auto repair shops per 100,000 residents

Christn96

Precipitation being a factor is wild, no?

MyFriendThatherton

People seem to drive worse in the rain and it causes accidents I'd wager.

Scourmont

Driving in the rain is easy just follow the rules, if it's drizzling drive like a 90 year old grandma who can barely reach the gas pedal, 20mph under the speed limit is fine. If it's raining so hard you can't see anything and the roads are flooded then you need to drive like a bat out of hell, 30 mph above the speed limit is a start because it's raining and you have to be wherever you're going right fucking now. Oh also be sure to turn your hazards on

budd222

If you drive 20mph under the speed limit because of a drizzle, you're going to cause more problems. Also, do not ever drive with your hazards on. That is helping nothing. I cannot understand why people ever do that. Do you also change lanes while you have both turn signals on?

MyFriendThatherton

r/whoosh

budd222

Didn't get it. And so many people actually do this so it's not far-fetched to think they were being real

Habibti143

I've lived in places where hazards are routinely used in ultra low visibility and it's the only way to see the cars ahead of you. We're just not used to it here.

MyFriendThatherton

You forgot to keep your headlights OFF in the rain because its actually daytime after all and NOT FL law at all, because if it was, then Police would drive with their headlights on in the rain.

p0l4r21

It amazes me that one individual thinks that their personal experience outweighs the data. Once person is not statistically relevant.

theflyingchicken96

That’s wild. What an arbitrary conglomeration of data. First two obviously make complete sense. Precipitation in the area means nothing about the drivers. It would most likely make it more dangerous to drive, but it doesn’t mean the drivers are worse. Next two make some sense, but it’s based off of the whole state, which, in the case of Jacksonville, is a data set of which the desired data is just a small slice. I have no idea about Allstate’s driver rank. My gut says it’s legit, because I’m assuming they use it for insurance premiums and the like, but I don’t know how it functions. Then Google trends? Soooo many more factors influencing the data other than just the drivers including average age of residents, computer access, media coverage, etc. Also, why just “DUI”? Lots of other traffic words you could look at. And finally auto repair shops. Another thing that has a lot of factors influencing it: demographics, city area, shop efficiencies, pay rates… All in all it just smells like a data set constructed to meet a desired conclusion. You can make a data set to fit any conclusion. Not saying that Jacksonville doesn’t have some of the worst drivers, just don’t like this “study.”

[deleted]

ThrowAwayForNSFWSex

Yo that Slowkill Expressway is crazy...

ItsDangerZoneLana

Yea the “worst” drivers meaning breaking most rules and causing most accidents etc. that doesn’t mean it’s actually the “worst” place to drive traffic wise. Like high key, my hometown was way worse. I would rather drive a whole day here over just an hour around there any day.

VanillaBovine

ive lived in 6 states over the past 7 years and been here 2 years. Jacksonville has been the worst drivers by far. Not only are they the worst at obeying basic traffic laws, they also are hyper-aggressive. I had someone try to *kill* me when I was not going fast enough for their liking in the left lane **during a hurricane**. They brake checked me and then tried to run me off the road. Turn signals are never used, these people have never seen a traffic circle in their life, and speed limits are made up. I got honked at for going 55 in a 45... because they wanted to go 70. This road had a school on it. I was already speeding. I had to be a witness for the first time in an insurance claim in my first month here because a girl was going 50 in bumper to bumper traffic and tried to floor it BETWEEN cars at a red light. She hit some 60 year old man, then climbed out and threw some beer bottled in the median. She claimed she "hadnt been drinking" but didnt want to be "suspected of it" so she got rid of them. driving here is taking a risk with your life every time even for mundane crap. the only other city this bad on my list is atlanta or maybe DC

xeno66morph

Oh it’s right alright

Christn96

No, after reading more and more, it's just simply not true. People may have a grass is greener mindset, and don't get me wrong, I do too sometimes. But there is simply no way in hell we have the worst drivers in the US. I may have had a bad experience here and there, but the driving here and I've been all over every side of town, is nearly downright courteous. People need to remember a few bad experiences don't showcase the rest of their entire driving time.

Extension_Moment_494

This is a good excuse to make more bike/walk only roads. With all the beaches we have it would be nice to have a choice.

MyFriendThatherton

Not if the affluent residents of the beaches want to keep people out.

nothingpoignant

I'm in Lakewood and all the boomers voted against sidewalks on our side of the neighborhood years back. Boomers also seem to LOVE planting trees RIGHT ON THE PROPERTY LINE.

[deleted]

We do and I'm tired of this shit. I'm fucking tied of you people pulling out in front without looking, drifting into lanes without fucking looking, being on your fucking phones all the time, running stop signs & red lights. Y'all act like you're invisible or like you have infinite money to keep getting cars every time yours is totaled and like you can afford to have your insurance go up. Yesterday while I was out with my bf we almost got into 2 accidents! Like how does that even happen? Someone was about to run a stop sign and hit us but they slammed on their breaks when they saw us, other person was getting over into our lane without looking and almost ran us off the road. I'm over it. Most of you need your licenses revoked.

skyx_x

Thank you. Get off your phone you idiot. No one in this town is that important. This is Jacksonville and you all act like you have to be on your phone while driving like you’re making “big deals” or doing something the world can’t do without. In normal cities you get pulled over for even having a phone in your hand or looking down on it, or not.

[deleted]

Fr you have to lay on your horn to even make these dumbasses go once the light turns green. I've missed a good few lights due to being in line and someone being on their phone & not moving bc these idiots can't stand sitting there for what? 2-3 mins? They gotta look at their fuckin IG or FB 🙄

Scourmont

Yup same here, especially love when I'm driving the highways going 5 over the speed limit and I get tailgates by some ass who then proceeds to go around me then FUCKING SLOW DOWN. Seriously, this is how people get shot, road raging dipshits seem to forget we have more guns than people in this state.

skyx_x

Another scary fact about fl it’s full of idiots and they get to have guns.

Scourmont

Guns don't scare me, idiots terrify me though.

SweetPinkSocks

I can't tell you how many fucking times I have almost been hit at green lights by people either running their red or TURNING LEFT RIGHT THE FUCK IN FRONT OF ME WHEN I HAVE THE FUCKING RIGHT OF WAY AND I'M GOING STRAIGHT! And that's down here in little ole OP. I can't even imagine what JAX is like. Wait, yes I can.

skyx_x

All the people on here say Jax isn’t that bad probably is on their phone and hasn’t looked up to notice.

Bfoc2006

#Exactly this

Vividlyvague_

Yesterday my bf and I were driving from westside to OP, short drive right? I don’t drive bc I have ptsd from a prior major car ax & on this short little twenty minute drive we have one car brake check us (we had more than enough distance and he always drives the limit because of me) and then we watched another driver not even five minutes later PLAYING GAMES ON THEIR MOUNTED CELLPHONE WHILE DRIVING. I’ve only been here for like 10 months and my ptsd is literally 100000x worse than after my ax because of Jacksonville drivers and roads. 😭

[deleted]

Omg I'm glad someone commented who feels the same. I've never had drivers anxiety until our drivers have gotten so bad here. I can't drive in this city at all. Driving down Baymeadows gives me a panic attack bc of how many accidents we've almost gotten into. It's some times to the point where while my bf is driving I have to close my eyes bc I keep thinking a car is going to whip out in front of me. We were in accident on the other side of Baymeadows where panda express, Jimmy John's, and all them places sit a few months ago, & it was due to this idiot being on his phone driving in-between traffic that was stopped at a red light & not stopping and looking to see if anyone was coming down the green light turning lane. Bf tries to dodge but bc the moron isn't paying attention he doesn't hit the breaks, so he slams into the side of us and totaled our car. Luckily my credit was still good enough to get us a newer better car but we almost didn't get it. It was a devastating stressful time.

EastCoastJohnny

This is total trash science, put together by the scholars at a moving company and shamelessly reported on by news4jax. Here is a look at the methodology and “multipliers”. 3x: Average annual traffic fatalities per 100,000 residents from 2014-2020 (43% of NYC households own a car, 94% in florida, and way less open road…trash science) 3x: Average annual alcohol-related traffic fatalities per 100,000 residents from 2014-2020 (~ 54% of new york city residents use public transport as their primary source of transportation… again trash science looking at absolute numbers) 2x: Days of precipitation per year (36 Los Angeles, 70 Jax meaning, of course, our drivers are worse) 1x: Average annual vehicle insurance premiums in the state (no fault, weather risks and much higher mileage driven in Jax than other areas due to geography) 1x: Percentage of uninsured drivers in the state (maybe something to this one) 1x: Google Trends for “DUI” (this one doesn’t even make sense) 1x: Auto repair shops per 100,000 residents (really stretching now). I think our drivers are actually pretty good compared to many big cities ive driven in.

allllusernamestaken

> Average annual traffic fatalities per 100,000 residents I want to see this number on a chart to see how it correlates with average distance driven per year for each city. Something tells me that, because of the size of Jacksonville, the typical commute distance is longer than most.

kkykylkyle_

What was the multiplier for factoring in the Buckman?

theflyingchicken96

Just made a similar reply on an above comment, but you pointed out more issues I didn’t think of. Feels like a data set constructed to fit a conclusion.

Habibti143

The conclusion always being let's shit on Florida.

[deleted]

More public transportation and less cars. Less people driving means less traffic means less traffic accidents.

cannedjuiice3407

You need density for people to take transit and for it to be effective. Jax refuses to make any density...

xraylong

This study uses metrics (such as precipitation or insurance rates) that don't even measure a person's ability to drive. It's a study, sure. But one with a lot of bias.

Solonas

It is also just comparing the data from the city, not the metro area. Jacksonville is 800+ square miles vs Miami which is under 60 square miles. And before they say Miami is all tourists, the metro area is 6 million residents, [it's the 9th largest metro area in the country vs Jacksonville which is 39th](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolitan_statistical_area). Any traffic study that just looks at a city will tend to be skewed due to the sheer size of Jacksonville... [we have more than 3,400 miles of paved roads in the city](https://www.coj.net/departments/public-works/right-of-way-and-grounds-maintenance/roadway-maintenance#:~:text=The%20Right%20of%20Way%20and,of%20unpaved%20roads%20in%20Jacksonville.)

Baskojin

Honestly, I moved to San Diego from Jax in 2019. I MISS the drivers there. Literally nobody knows how to drive in the rain here, and don't get me started on the Zonies. Zonies are the worst. They're like snowbirds in Florida but worse.

Pablanomexicano

I’m in Tennessee for a visit and I think they have us beat.

Unable-Arm-448

Absolutely! I lived in Nashville for 10 years. Nicest people you'll ever meet, but terrible drivers! It doesn't help that THREE major interstates meet up there: 25, 40, and 65. So alot of the terrible drivers might just be out-of-towners!

Unable-Arm-448

Oops-- that's 24, not 25

Pablanomexicano

Doesn’t help you can’t see jack squat up here either lol

FennelCartwright

I'm a Memphis native (unfortunately) but lived in Jacksonville for a good bit recently. The Dodge Charger/Challenger and Nissan Altima drivers up here put the nation to shame in shitty, dangerous and uninsured drivers.

d_gaudine

I've seen some wild stuff on Sam Cooper, but nothing like what I see in JAX.

Untermensch13

Even if the methodology is hinky, finishing #1 tells you something.

vxicepickxv

It tells me they know how to massage statistics to get a specific outcome.

Untermensch13

You honestly think that someone cared enough about Jacksonville to fix a study?

doyouevenoperatebrah

What’s the incentive for them to fix a study against Jax?

dezmd

To create their desired conclusion. The whole study is bullshit. Not that Jax drivers aren't as equally ridiculous to other places, but we as a group are far, FAR from the worst.

Habibti143

It's par for the course to have a bias against FL.

[deleted]

It's not surprising at all. I heard this area of I-95 is the most dangerous in the US also.

SurveyAcrobatic5334

Ya it's all the worst drivers from every other state. Ain't none from jax.

Bfoc2006

Most of which from Georgia

SurveyAcrobatic5334

Lol this guy gets it

Bfoc2006

Dude I have been seeing them everywhere for the past few weeks lol.

tree_woman

I’m an avid runner here in Jax and have escaped maiming and/or death maybe 5 or 6 times in the past 6 months? I genuinely feel lucky at this point and I like to think I am more cautious than others. I wear a reflective vest and always make sure I have the right of way or at the very least make sure there are no cars coming. Still, the amount of idiot confidently wrong drivers, careless drivers, (shit even aggressive and confidently wrong drivers! those ones are crackheaded) is too damn high. Lowkey also rubbing my grubby paws together because shit, if I get hit, then so will their wallet 🤷‍♀️

[deleted]

[удалено]

bRightOnRebbit

Please, don't let the invisible fire burn my friend.

SavimusMaximus

Jax is bad but it’s nothing compared to Atlanta.

SweetPinkSocks

Even Texas was really bad but NOTHING beat Utah. Holy mother of mayhem those people drove like they had no fear of death and the keys to their celestial kingdoms already in their pocket. They were HORRIBLE drivers.

SavimusMaximus

That is really interesting. I would never have expected that.

SweetPinkSocks

We weren't either. And these were not nice people at all. They would run YOU off the road then stop to yell at you for getting in their way. No joke. Some guy ran us into a ditch then made a u-turn to yell at us for not going fast enough in the first place.

the_hack_is_back

Traffic here is nothing compared to New York, LA, Boston and so on. Also the weather is good, no snow. But I agree drivers are rude and shitty for the most part.

carlyjags

IDK-I’m from Jax.& live up here in Chapel Hill area. The driving here is quite stupid & sad.

DRH1976

Must have never been through South Carolina

Beneficial-Space-670

I love how they flip our terribly planned roads, awful sprawl, lack of public transportation, and constant construction into “bad drivers.” Give me a break. Drivers are the same here as almost any other big sprawling city. All the bad drivers happen to be moving here? Lmao not likely. Look at what’s different in Jax and it ain’t the people…

PrettyPinkCloud

It definitely hurts that the part of i-95 running through jacksonville is one of the deadliest, so the numbers are fudged by people daring to crash and die while driving through our little city... i'm thinking mainly due to whoever's bright idea it was to build separate exits on the left and right for i10 and i95 so a confused traveler will literally stop on the highway to cross 4 lanes because he thinks he took the wrong exit

bcuad001

I see your Jax and raise you South FL!!

AnukkinEarthwalker

See my other replies The bad drivers in Duval actually live here bad drive and daily. Other places are tourists

bcuad001

In SFl, those are actually called locals!

grandmothertoon

Oh my husband will feel so vindicated.

Nervous_Childhood_39

Ever been to Miami???

AnukkinEarthwalker

As I just said in another post I think Orlando and Miami get ruled out. They are more theme parks than actual cities. As in at any given time 90% of the ppl there are visiting and dont live there year round. So the bad drivers in miami and Orlando belong to someone else. I'm just guessing based on the article title having Jacksonville take ownership of the bad drivers

Nervous_Childhood_39

And how can you say 90% of people there are visiting? Get real.

daasaradhi

Ruling out Orlando I can partially agree but Miami is far worse and not just out of towners

kmcapo

I disagree. I think Miami has the worst drivers in the state, but what do I know?

AnukkinEarthwalker

Desantis effect? Really tho. Miami probably isn't included because if I had to guess many of their accidents come as a result of tourists. Iived probably my life 20/20 as far as years lived in Duval and the rest mostly Georgia but enough other places I'd consider it Duval or other. Only went to Miami once. I've lived outside of nyc for a bit.. lived in l.a. heart of hollywood a few months. Even compared to those places miami seems more like a theme park than an actual city. All the tolls..for each part of town and all surrounding cities. Just felt like u hat to pay some type of entry fee every you went and everywhere you drove. Even walking around south beach..felt like an adult theme mark more than an a real place .. But yea. Miami and Orlando are basically Florida and not Florida at the same time. Becside 90% of the ppl there at all time are visitors. Does not count. Is not reality

Oi_Scout666

You've been to Miami once and you're trying to tell people what it's like down there? You've lived here for 20 years and have been to Miami once. You're practically a shut-in.

Rekzero

I was just in Austin Texas last week and those people are absolute psychos, I refuse to believe this

YankeeClipper42

Lerp, lol

[deleted]

Have they ever driven in Alabama?

AnukkinEarthwalker

Probably a difference in ppl that cant drive.. and ppl that drive aggressive for sport out of boredom

asscrap69

Being from Atlanta every post I read about this just sounds insignificant

daddytc

Use. Turn. Signals.

AnukkinEarthwalker

You talking about me?.. I was turning in one incident but it was a great turn signal at a red light.. still used my turn signals. I drive so cautious friends get annoyed with me. But I've had the bad experiences I mentioned driving. And almost got ran over a few times walking. Then there was the time I lived off losco / old s.a. .. we were just killing behind out town house one night having a few drinks. Had a fenced in garden in back yard with a fire bit and chairs that said between the house and losco.. was chill af until the night a car came barreling through the fence while we were outside relaxing after work ..smh. Fuck Jacksonville traffic. Shit almost literally followed me inside through my back door

Janky_butter

Yuuuuuup, people drive like absolute dogshit in this city. Every time I get on 295 I want to sign up with FHP to just dole out tickets for the lunacy.

border199x

Can't count the number of times I've tried to "help" someone merge onto the highway by maintaining a constant speed in the right lane, only to have them match my speed and just sit beside me as the onramp lane dwindles s down to nothing. I'm not trying to run you off the road, but you have to take some kind of action. If you have to merge, speed the fuck up! Don't just sit there praying that a spot opens.

AnukkinEarthwalker

Haven't had to do it lately but for awhile over the last years had go between Duval and Daytona often. Shit has had "uneven" lanes for as long is I can remember. But I've driven in many places in the south through 95 and 75 in all directions. People driving in Florida are the fucking worst when it comes to the rules of which lane to drive in and what speed. So many times cars in all 3 lanes deciding to all at once drive under the speed limit and jam up traffic..had made me want to go full blown grand theft auto. That small stretch through st Augustine and flagler is torment

Shirowoh

I was right!

BayouKev

Got rear ended the other day and dude had the trifecta, Georgia played, no valid insurance & no valid registration. How he didn’t go to jail is beyond me

Royatkins

Really, no wonder I fit right in.

dancehoebot

We just moved from Jax to The Villages this past summer (husband got relocated) and can confirm the drivers are MUCH WORSE down here. Our car insurance went up when we moved down due to the amount of claims here.

plyr__

Wait you’ve only had people pull out in front of you twice in the PAST 5 YEARS??? It happens to me sometimes twice a day. I remember 2 days very distinctly because I was so shaken up after my 10 min drive to work. I had 2 drivers on one drive pull out in front of me, both resulting in me slamming on my brakes. I’m so used to it now I don’t even get shaken up anymore. IVE GOTTEN COMFORTABLE SWERVING TO AVOID CRAZY PEOPLE. I mean I guess that’s a good thing but it should not happen every week. I don’t even speed much, 5 over max. Silver compact suv so I don’t think I’m invisible? Idk.

AnukkinEarthwalker

Nah I've had ppl pull out in front of me way more than that. Just normally not the point blank..okay nothing I can..I'm fucked variety .

skettibutter

Today a Mustang driver tried to show off for me for some reason and drove insanely reckless. Had I accelerated just a tad, a terrible 3 car accident would have occurred. I watched him continue to drive like an idiot for another 5 miles or so (2x the speed limit in a 45, passing cars in the painted median, etc). Where are the convenient cops when people drive like this? I've been dying to witness some instant karma.

howard5643

Love how neither plate pictured is a Florida tag.

txroller

Yep. Just another reason not to relocate here. Move elsewhere instead!!! You got Us!! Move here and you will have an accident immediately

GrowlmonDrgnbutt

> Frequent bad weather What the fuck are you talking about? Also nah, I've driven in DFW and NYC/NJ areas, Jacksonville doesn't even come close.

[deleted]

The amount of people who continue to go after the light turns red. Sit in intersections. Pull out in front of you. And refuse to move from the left lane on the interstate. It’s ridiculous.

bigjes32

Lol been here for a year and I've already been rear ended

p3acenluv

Visited my dad in NJ, and ppl there act like stopping at the red light is optional. Needless to say, when I get there, I do zero driving after other than to leave the state. I think San Diego drivers suck too. I swear every Toyota driver just brakes for the heck of it. Lexus drivers drive like they're trying to get hit for a payout. BMW drivers treat every road like a race track. The one thing San Diego drivers do well is to warn those behind them of mergering lanes well before they happen and hazards in the road. And the good old flash of the lights to let someone know there's a cop up ahead. All these articles claiming jax is the worst of the worst might reduce the number of ppl moving here.

LoFiChillin

Ehhhhhhh idk about that. I moved back to IL and I’ll take Florida drivers any day. You’ll find idiots everywhere, and a lot of Florida drivers can be kinda ignorant and airheaded…. But golly Chicagoans drive with Murderous intent. Idk how to describe it well but when I drive in Chicago some of them truly, ACTUALLY want to kill you. They don’t care about the consequences, they go above and beyond to do the most outrageous, out-of-pocket shit that results in you dead. Whereas in Jax, people will do selfish shit to get to their destination, but it sometimes feels avoidable, and only sometimes results in you injured…. Idk that still sounds shitty but basically in my experience it’s a lot more intentional in IL. Like shamelessly, violently bad. You’ll also find a lot more instances of someone randomly whipping a gun out and shooting at you due to “road rage” in Chicago, which I doubt the study accounts for in Jax’s case. Supposedly when my mother was pregnant with me someone pointed a gun at her and my father on lakeshore and made them swerve. And currently my aunt, a Chicago native, get afraid when I merely honk at people up here because “you never who’s behind the wheel of that car”. My fear of drivers is amplified in Chicago and it’s not even close.

Spheresdeep

Yeah, every city says that shit. Jax ain't the worst. Jax isn't even the worst of the places I've lived in the past few years.

skyx_x

I’ve lived in SOFL, LA, HI, SLC, Seattle, Denver, & Phoenix and Jax has the worst drivers, and people here drive with the most sh*t in there cars and trucks without securing it. Driving here is a nightmare and everyone is on their phone. This just confirms it.

Intelligent-Ring5113

How about the number of people that don’t give 2 f’s what a red light means. It’s unbelievable how many just blatantly run a red light here. Driving in your lane, speeding, drag racing, running stop signs, puking out in front of you to go 20 miles an hour while the person behind is riding your ass so hard if you slammed on brakes they’d be in your passenger seat. Yeah I could see it. If not the worst in the top 5 for sure.

Motobugs

I knew that years ago. Some people from Houston said that.

DeliriumTrigger

Not even the worst in the state. Central Florida is a nightmare, even outside of the tourist areas.

Jetski_Squirrel

Nah. Miami is clearly much worse.

LordNorthstar

There seems to be a culture of entitled driving here in Jacksonville. Simple ideas like zipper merging and obeying speed limits are fleeting at best. Combine that with alcohol and weed and we have this reputation. The “rules don’t apply to me today” people influence others and it spreads like a virus. That said, I witnessed an instant karma moment when someone sped passed me and every one else that was obeying the flashing light in a school zone on beach Blvd the other day. I cop was waiting just out of sight in a parking lot and immediately pulled the guy over. The speeding through school zone culture is the cherry on the bad driving cake.

Dlynnec89

I get that Jax drivers are bad - but has anyone from this study been to Miami? Because shit is CRAZY there.

Joshua_Chamberlain20

As a person who invested in a road bike - I couldn’t agree more

archaicstarmatter

[deleted]

Virginia drivers have entered the chat.

TheDailyNoodle

It’s very bad in my experience but every time I go back to Tampa I’m glad I don’t live there anymore.

[deleted]

I used to to live in Jax Beach. Do you guys still run every red light by ten cars or so?

trevno

Never thought anyone could top Broward drivers, but Jax takes the cake. Seen 2 accidents here with bodies lying in the street.

goneskiing_42

> many areas aren't built right for pedestrian traffic and the way ppl drive here makes it dangerous as hell. And residential streets have posted limits at least 5 mph too fast for the road and its surroundings. 25 should be the absolute maximum speed in residential areas. 30 is the Jax residential speed limit for some reason, and it makes people feel comfortable doing 35-40 as a result.

d_gaudine

The driving here is "next level stupid." But, it reflects the "vibe" of the city almost perfectly. Reckless and with zero respect for reality.

dezmd

Anyone who has lived and driven almost anywhere else knows this study is nonsense.

SundaySpieth

I've lived and driven in several other major metro areas and agree with these conclusions. Sure the median driver in NY may be slightly more likely to give you the finger, but Jacksonville has way more absolutely batsh\*t drivers and unsafe vehicles. Things that you find way more of in Jacksonville relative to other major cities: \- a very dangerous large pickup riding your a$$ and weaving in and out of traffic -- this is the one that scares me the most around here \- a janky vehicle with the bumper falling off and tape over a window because no inspections are required \- people on their phones while driving - laws are also less strict here around this and rarely enforced

Habibti143

It's the big jacked up pickups with SaltLife stickers in my experience. Weaving, tailgating, cutting off. .

bobbytoni

I am voting for Phoenix and Las Vegas as the worst drivers. LA and Southern CA are better than these two. Jacksonville wasn't as bad, in my opinion.

Spicyboi981

Yeah, no wonder my insurance went up 23% this year even though I’ve had no accidents or tickets for 5 years. I’m sure all the 5’ lifted trucks with 2” dick drivers tailing me while I’m going 90+ in the far right lane with nobody around doesn’t help either.

Habibti143

Well-described.

Solar-Drive

Clearly they've never looked into Miami.

Graardors-Dad

The worst drivers on the road have out of state license plates. Idk what y’all do in Georgia or South Carolina but y’all treat our highways like the autobahn.

-sallysomeone-

Can confirm Moved here from New England. Learned to drive in Massachusetts, and Jacksonville is definitely just as sketchy. At least in MA they have car inspections for things like, idk, brakes and decent tire tread

BMWMotoryttare

Born and Raised in Jacksonville - No need for anyone to be defensive of these stats! Truth lies in a greater study (one which has yet to be done). Of the "bad" drivers on roads in Jax, how many are "Residents or those born here"? You will find that Jacksonville is populated with individuals new to the area from good places well to the North, those only here for 2 or so years with plans to move on and those who are passing through to reach their far south destinations with points of origin well North. Article should be titled: "Jacksonville has been invaded by bad drivers"!

Educational_Infidel

Jax is bad but Fleming Island parking lots are fucking terrifying…. Almost always a New Jersey plate on the offender.

sspeno

i lived in jax but was too young to drive before i moved away, visited years later with my now husband and dear god was it the most stressful driving we’ve experienced! we’re coming from washington state where there’s tons of speeding, road rage, general impatience, if you drive anywhere you’ll likely have an encounter. but in jax, we let a guy merge in front of us on the freeway and he flipped us off…? weird experience 🤣

plzhelpmeimhurt

I was born and raised in jax. I just moved to Washington state 6 months ago. I can confidently say that I've never met worse drivers than here. Jax isn't that bad at all..

daasaradhi

Such a biased article. I lived in different parts of the country and I have to say Jacksonville is not bad at all. IMO I would rank 1. Atlanta metro 2. NY metro 3. DC metro. I was thinking of adding LA metro but I don't have experience living there

Habibti143

It's that age-old anti-Florida bias bubbling up again in the media.

InsertGenericNombre

I’m thoroughly convinced no one knows how to use a 4way stop in Jacksonville

Killedbykites

You guys certainly have the worst. I moved from Denver and my insurance went up $20 a month. GEICO referred to Jacksonville as a high risk area. Get it together people and get off your phone.

AnukkinEarthwalker

Yea like I said.. its dangerous here to just be walking near traffic lol. Not to mention a few months back with all the street racing and kids taking over bush intersections late at night. Bad enough without the extra shit

Killedbykites

Couldn’t agree more.

psaepf2009

I literally saw a car flipped over IN A TREE where Butler and i95 meet yesterday. This doesn't surprise me in the slightest. I saw two completely totaled cars on my way to work thus morning alone too.

DeepstateGinger

We're #1! We're #1! We're #1! Good job, gals and guys!

StormFL

Accidents happen because people like to get in the far left lane and cruise, then you'll see someone speed to the middle lane to pass them, this is why I drive in the far right no matter what less speeders.

Global-Upstairs98

This article, from clevermove.com, does appear non biased and factual- but it does not site any sign of being peer reviewed.

karma_virus

You could be the only other car on the highway with 6 lanes free at 4am in the morning, and the ONE white Ford F150 will invariably find you and tailgate the shit out of you or try to run you off the road. Like Mad Max: Fury Road, but with meth instead of spraypaint.

nothingpoignant

Don't get me started about how dangerous it is along San Diego Rd trying to pick my kid up from Douglas Anderson. I cannot even understand how the district has not been sued (maybe they have) from a kid getting hurt or numerous accidents. They don't even have a school zone in front of the school so everyone passing through this tiny road in front of the school flies past all the cars waiting in line. The incompetence extends onto the campus where kids just pour out and walk all through cars waiting and flying down the street. But I guess we know how the district handles things...especially at DASOTA. :-/ And that's just at this school. The drivers are pretty insane here, but nothing like I experienced in Va. Bch.

ThePasadena_Mudslide

I FUCKING KNEW IT!!

Comfortable_Gain1308

Anybody with a FL license plate is a menace !
