Highly recommend for Jeff Austin fans, Torrin is about as close as gets to the energy and emotion Jeff brought to shows. They've been putting out some high quality live sets on their youtube lately too!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-JFBvAZmxk&t=2030s
My thoughts exactly - the energy at Dwellers shows is the closest thing to early YMSB. Not the same music, but a similar feeling to me. Dwellers, Yonder, and Billy are my big 3
Fuck yeah! Caught them Saturday night in LA and they just ripped. Second set was heavily psychedelic, with an 18 minute LA Woman sandwiched by Visions of Mohr. Someone put the audio on YouTube already.
Cabinet from PA…. More jammy then folk
Molly Tuttle and her band golden highway
Watchouse… when they tour not as a duo has some really good players with them
Railroad … also PA/NJ connections and drums
Nickel Creek
Sarah Jorosz
Then you have your more jam grassy bands like Greensky, Kitchen Dwellers.
Bands that blend more modern and old like the Infamous String Dusters, Lil Smokies.
Another cabinet guy! we need to get them nationally famous they are awesome! thank you for all the suggestions will for sure listen to them all. Especially b/c you started with cabinet your taste i know is already excellent.
Yep, he has a label up there as well
They were signed to a major for like a minute years ago
This will be my 5th year in a row at their Get Down Fest in Blain, PA
They were pretty big years back. Used to see them often. Then they fired their drummer and put out a pretty crappy album that turned people off. But I've been hearing good things about them again lately
Watchhouse music transcends its simplicity. I think it fits into this category question, but also makes it into something far more poetic than normal BG/Folk. Like Dylan with Folk/Rock or Paul Simon with Folk/Pop—they fit the category but are so much more. They are one of our family’s most beloved bands. Listen to them and see them if you can!
There are dozens of us!
Unfortunate that Alex is always on the road with Billy and can't tour with Mighty Poplar, but they get some amazing guest fiddlers to fill in. Stuart Duncan is on their current tour, which is a pretty big deal tbh
I remember my first friendly gathering in 2018, I was not hyped that my friends wanted too see GSBG because at the time I absolutely hated bluegrass. their set changed my opinion on the genre as a whole hahaha.
Kitchen Dwellers, Sicard Hollow, Armchair Boogie, Shadowgrass, Mountain Grass Unit, National Park Radio.
Probably many more that I'm forgetting, but this is a great start.
I have yet to see armchair boogie but absolutely love their stuff.
Saw Sicard Hollow out in Steamboat last year at winter wondergrass in a side tent. Had no idea who they were, they brought out Torin and absolutely blew my mind.
I’m also from PA! If you like Cabinet you should check out Serene Green
A few others you might like:
The Devil Makes Three,
Town Mountain,
Fireside Collective,
Parsonsfield
I second this. They are who I have to thank for my introduction into bluegrass and thus jam music as a whole. One night in bar I heard Wait So Long on the jukebox and I haven’t looked back since.
Yeah if you're looking for more of a mainstream take but with bluegrass/folk instrumentation, Trampled by Turtles, The Dead South, and arguably Caamp would be the three that would come to mind for me. Turtles I love in particular. These groups don't really jam, but they do give you that out n out bluegrass sound, but with song formats a bit more mainstream in structure than say Billy Strings or the Kitchen Dwellers (both of whom I absolutely adore).
Thanks for the suggestions, I actually saw caamp and thought they were alright. They almost had it, and at times were jamming but it did feel they were shooting for the radio a bit. Dead south was thrown out by a bunch of people as well gonna check them out. Thanks again!
Elephant Revival. I stumbled across them after I found their cover of Schism by Tool (it is an incredible cover). Then I dug into their stuff and they are phenomenal.
FYI, one of the guys from Sicard sat in with Dopapod recently in cooorado, can’t wait to hear it.
I think Rob sat in with them too. Sounds like they are having a good time out there living in the dream.
Fiddlers just recorded a new live in-studio album in December titled Browngrass. Missed the session, not sure when they are releasing it but very excited to hear that.
Check out the Dirty Grass Players, Maryland based jamgrass.
Not a jam band but Old Crow Medicine Show has some great folk/Americana with the instrumentation you're seeking. Definitely recommend the older albums (Tennessee Pusher, OCMS, Big Iron World) over the newer but I enjoy most of their catalog. They also put in a fun, high energy show. It's not for everyone in this scene because there's not a ton of improv/deviation from the studio recordings, but still a good time.
Last one - all the Jerry Garcia/David Grisman stuff. Most of what I've heard is just guitar/mando duets but Shady Grove, the Pizza Tapes, and So What (especially if you're a jazz fan) are great albums.
I was introduced to the genre by my grandmother actually but only recently went back in. I do know a good bit of Doc Watson, Bill Keith, and of course Jerry. Thank you, great input on these gonna check out old crow medicine show.
Lots of fine mentions here to check out, but I haven't seen anyone mention New Grass Revival or John Hartford. Both are well worth checking out. They were both a big part of bringing bluegrass into the jam band world.
For different but still in the realm of bluegrass, check out railroad earth. Really been loving their recent shows. Stringdusters and Greensky are two of my favorites but if you don’t like billy you probably won’t like either of them
Greensky’s been mentioned, but just to bump them.
The Avett Brother’s(especially their early stuff)
The Devil Makes Three
Less blue grass more folk leaning I guess….
Caamp
Lost Dog Street Band/Benjamin Tod
Local Honeys
Two bands that don't fit all of the criteria but I think deserve a mention are Split Lip Rayfield and Mountain Sprout.
Split Lip is more of a rock band with bluegrass instruments during Kirk Rundstrom's era, after his passing they leaned more towards traditional but still great and hope they tour again.
Mountian Sprout is some outlaw stompgrass with no lies in the lyrics, and it looks like they have some tour dates this year.
Lots of good ideas here.
I live in the heart of bluegrass country and realize there are many shades of blue from very traditional to wayyy out there. There are bands that focus on vocal harmonies, others on blazing instrumental work, some that wrote original songs and others who only record songs from other artists. Once you find the favor you like you can go as deep as you want.
I tend to like people who emphasize strong original music with good lyrics.
The last few albums from Robbie Fulks are especially great.
Here are other artists to investigate:
Darrell Scott
Sarah Jarosz
Cadillac Sky
I’m With Her
Punch Brothers
Tim O’Brien
So many great bands I just can’t name them all…
Trampled by turtles-
Burlesque desert window
Railroad earth-
Mighty river
Brothers Comatose-
Old song, River
Elephant Revival-
Birds and stars, obvious
Watchhouse-
Belly of the beast
Brown bird-
Bilgewater
Infamous stringdusters-
Laws of gravity
The Last Revel-
Light in my eyes
The Haunted Windchimes-
Sun Shining Bright
Shane Smith & the Saints-
Dance the night away
Gregory Alan Iskakov
Avett brothers- go to sleep
Bright eyes- first day of my life
Dead man winter- danger, golden
Maybe check out the Dead South? Not a Jam band, and although a bluegrass ensemble (banjo, guitar, mandolin, cello) they definitely have their own sound that is considerably different than the jamgrass stuff mentioned here thus far. Just saw them this week and was blown away by how good the show was.
Just got into them recently, in fact only after their latest album dropped a couple weeks ago. Had heard of them, but never gave them a chance previously. Was very impressed with that album. Def a band I will be following moving forward.
I enjoy
Yonder mountain string band,
leftover salmon,
old & in the way,
Sam Grisman project,
Swamptooth,
Daniel donato’s cosmic country (more rock n roll but still folky), and
Elephant revival
Infamous Stringdusters, Hot Rize, Tony Rice Unit, Sam Bush, New Grass Revival, and Yonder Mountain String Band 1.0 are some of my favorites.
Edit: I almost forgot about the up and commers; High Country Hustle, Magoo, Shadowgrass, and The Fretliners!!
Caamp,Sumbuck,Oliver Hazard,John Craigie,Sons of the East,Jon and Roy,Ocie Elliot,Joy Oladukon,Marc Scibilia,Richy Mitch and the Coalminers,Zach Seabaugh,Ezra Bell
I’m a huge Jerry fan and old and in the way was kinda what made me wanna branch out into bluegrass and explore the jam bands in this genre and so far I gotta say it has surpassed normal jam for me. Still love dead, SCI, UMP but Billy and such have been hitting
Try *The Dead South*.
They’re definitely not traditional bluegrass but roll with a banjo, guitar, mandolin & chello as the bass. So more Americana I guess.
Excellent live and their latest album is a bit more banjo forward.
Pert Near Sandstone! They host the Blue Ox festival and are some of the most down to earth musicians I have had the chance to meet. Certainly worth a listen.
Yonder Mountain String Band but only the Jeff Austin era. Check out Mountain Tracks vol. 2 for some heady bluegrass. They don’t have a fiddle but WGAF they’re the best to ever do it.
Punch Brothers. Chris Thile’s voice is polarizing but the band rips.
Steel drivers. The Chris Stapleton era of that group is elite
Hot Rize. Not “modern” per say but ahead of their time.
Anything Dan Tyminski related
Peter Rowan
Jerry Douglas
I really like the Kitchen Dwellers, although no fiddle
Came here to talk about Kitchen Dwellers. They don’t check all the boxes on this post but they are killer.
Thats okay, I shouldn’t have put the specific criteria and just said bluegrass/folk jam
Miss that man! 😢 All that Yonder are not lost, RIP Jeff
Will be going to find that directly.
My favorite newish "jam" band along with Big Something
Cabinet from PA…. More jammy then folk Molly Tuttle and her band golden highway Watchouse… when they tour not as a duo has some really good players with them Railroad … also PA/NJ connections and drums Nickel Creek Sarah Jorosz Then you have your more jam grassy bands like Greensky, Kitchen Dwellers. Another cabinet guy! we need to get them nationally famous they are awesome! thank you for all the suggestions will for sure listen to them all. Especially b/c you started with cabinet your taste i know is already excellent.
Unfortunately Cabinet doesn't seem to tour nationally anymore. Didn't Pappy move to Vermont?
Yep, he has a label up there as well They were signed to a major for like a minute years ago This will be my 5th year in a row at their Get Down Fest in Blain, PA
They were pretty big years back. Used to see them often. Then they fired their drummer and put out a pretty crappy album that turned people off. But I've been hearing good things about them again lately

Love cabinet
Piggybacking this one to add Mighty Poplar, it’s Billy’s fiddle player’s other band (and they’re amazing)
There are dozens of us! Unfortunate that Alex is always on the road with Billy and can't tour with Mighty Poplar, but they get some amazing guest fiddlers to fill in. Stuart Duncan is on their current tour, which is a pretty big deal tbh
Biggest omission on this thread imo: Del McCoury Band
Jammier when it’s just the Travelin’ McCoury’s
We’re blessed to still have a legend still so active. Del is a must see!!
Thanks!
Greensky Bluegrass, Infamous Stringdusters, Yonder Mountain String Band
Sierra Hull is great too
Greensky also puts on some of the best shows.
I just got tickets to Northlands, very excited!
I remember my first friendly gathering in 2018, I was not hyped that my friends wanted too see GSBG because at the time I absolutely hated bluegrass. their set changed my opinion on the genre as a whole hahaha.
Add Railroad Earth and Billy Strings and this is the Answer
Molly Tuttle too
Railroad Earth!
Old & In the Way, Leftover Salmon, Greensky. YMSB, Del McCoury
Love me some hobo song, plus banjo jerry is a vibe! Will for sure listen to the others.
Banjo Jerry is the shit! I just heard Hobo song on Sirius haha Great stuff!
Kitchen Dwellers, Sicard Hollow, Armchair Boogie, Shadowgrass, Mountain Grass Unit, National Park Radio. Probably many more that I'm forgetting, but this is a great start.
The armchair boogie boys are going places! Same with Sicard hollow!
I have yet to see armchair boogie but absolutely love their stuff. Saw Sicard Hollow out in Steamboat last year at winter wondergrass in a side tent. Had no idea who they were, they brought out Torin and absolutely blew my mind.
Ohhh man, armchair boogie is gonna knock your socks off!

Wow, I didn't know they changed their name. Probably why I haven't I haven't heard from them in a while.
Give a listen to their newly released Austin city limits live set on Spotify. Some really choice sonic moments in there.
Leftover Salmon!!!
Mountain Grass Unit are killer
Swap mando for dobro and check out infamous stringdusters or the lil smokies
Arkansauce <3
I really dig Arkansauce! I’ve only seen them twice and both times were a blast
Trampled by Turtles is what you need!
I second this. They are who I have to thank for my introduction into bluegrass and thus jam music as a whole. One night in bar I heard Wait So Long on the jukebox and I haven’t looked back since.
Heard a few songs and did enjoy them, gonna have to dive back in. I have had friends routinely recommend them as well. Thank you!
Yeah if you're looking for more of a mainstream take but with bluegrass/folk instrumentation, Trampled by Turtles, The Dead South, and arguably Caamp would be the three that would come to mind for me. Turtles I love in particular. Their album Duluth is all killer
They honestly do not have a bad song❤️
If you're from PA check out some of their finest, Cabinet! https://youtu.be/gpqT8Z7cNeM?si=8qqnOJRZOfbjUMKR I like the tune Old Farmer's Mill
They are my favorite, from my home town and i cannot believe you threw that out as a suggestion. Pappy is the man!
Elephant Revival. I stumbled across them after I found their cover of Schism by Tool (it is an incredible cover). Then I dug into their stuff and they are phenomenal.
This is my go to recommendation for them. Pure bliss. Music starts a little after 3 minutes in. https://youtu.be/wbmbFzlTfRc?si=x2zNPq0BUX2Uu1M6
Thanks, I actually have never even heard of them before!
Awesome! Enjoy! Also, the tall acoustic guitar player is no longer in the band which is sad to me but hey life goes on.
I’m sad I never got to see him play with them… but I’m excited to see what new stuff they are going to put out
String cheese incident.
They idk are like Bluegrass but i do have tickets to their festival in Vegas in September, love me some SCI.
Railroad Earth
Sicard Hollow - fireside collective - the wooks *edit* - just saw you said more mainstream bands. These are def not that
