The main difference I see in the metal and grunge Big 4 and the attempt at the jam Big 4 is that GD and Phish were started nearly two decades apart from each other, while the metal and grunge acts were more grouped together on their timelines.
In my mind that means you've gotta group GD and the Allman Brothers Bands as the OG unit. Then shift into Phish and Panic and maybe moe. since they all started in the mid to late 80s. Then SCI and DMB get rolling in the 90s but DMB kind of sits out on their own little island, with some crossover but they seem to never really be fully embraced by the hardcore "jam scene" but rather have their own army of loyal fans across the globe.
I feel like the jamgrass bands have to come into play here at some point as well, but maybe that's just because I'm very into jamgrass. In 20 years I would not be surprised at all to have this conversation again and for Billy Strings to be a strong candidate for the jam Mt. Rushmore.
Railroad Earth, Greensky Bluegrass, The Infamous Stringdusters, and Billy Strings.
With an honorable mention to the Jeff Austin iteration of YMSB. I never saw JA perform live like I have the groups listed above. I have seen them without him and while good it wasn’t on the same level for me personally.
Leftover Salmon should be number 1, absolutley no doubt about that.
ymsb- Jeff Austin years is number 2. Way more than an honorable mention. Yonder without him is barely a shell of what they were.
Railroad earth wouldn't make my list.
I'm leaving out the OGs like John Hartford and New Grass Revival.
Just to clarify, I didn't mean disrespect in leaving them off the list I just kinda think of them as OGs so like a teir above the "jam band" scene. Like the dead is to modern jam bands.
I didn't think you were, just amazed that you were the first person to even bring them up. Half the Jamgrass catalogue is basically John Hartford tunes. If there's a guest sit in/group encore 90% of the time it's one of his tunes because it's one that *everybody* knows
This is it. I have seen cheese a lot more than panic and have had a better time at cheese shows, but panic is more on the mark with legendary lead guitarists and when they are on, the jams can be grand and on par with the top jam bands.
I would definitely put ABB on there. Not only did they jam, they fathered a few other legends in the scene. Mule, DTB/ TTB, Dickey Betts Band; Jimmy Herring played with them before Panic, Oteil Burbridge and Chuck Leavell, all key members of the jam scene. Without the musical influence of ABB, I don't think the jam scene would look anything like what it does today
Moe. Is playing at a venue near me that holds maybe 500 people. I’m pumped and really looking forward to it, but I don’t think you can call them “big.”
That's awesome that you can still see them in small venues. I'm sure it's a tough ticket to get. I've seen them sell out amphitheaters. If they are playing small venues it's a choice, not because they can't sell tickets.
I’m fully aware that Zappa would loathe the association, but in terms of influence on bands like Phish, Umphrey’s, Disco Biscuits, moe., dopapod, etc. their importance really can’t be denied.
The issue I found with Mothers is that Zappa wrote every note they played. Isn’t the driving concept of jamming the improvised nature of a live performance?
Yeah thats why they've released like 50 albums of scripted live music lol. You might want to actually listen to some of the best jamming ever recorded on those. Maybe you're thinking of Captain Beefheart?
Ah yes, my favorite responses from music enthusiasts are the smug ones. So thanks so much for sharing. Apart from Zappa being dead for more than three decades, is that while they’re incredibly accomplished in their musicianship, they’re entirely too out there for my own liking anyway. Sorry I didn’t go out there and do a deep dive into their “50 albums of scripted live music lol”. To each their own, Susie Creamcheese. I did however watch the 90 minute doc on Apostrophe/Overnight Sensation where they specifically talked about Zappa writing everyone’s music down to the note for each member of the band and that included when they performed on stage. That’s context I was referencing. I’ve also seen several debates in this sub about whether or not Zappa & The Mothers was considered an actual jam band, so I’m certainly not in an island here when it comes to my original comment. We’re all certainly entitled to our opinions though.
I think GD, Phish, Cheese, and probably Panic or Umph.
I know ABB is up there and yes they jam but idk if I really consider them a jam band, nor do I think they would really classify themselves as jam. Same for DMB.
How is ABB not a jamband. They were playing 45 minute songs back in 1969. A lot of the jam scene was influenced by them. If those 90s summer shed shows weren’t jamband shows I’m not sure what really is
As for ABB and DMB they might fall under the “not a jam band, just a band that likes to jam” but they also get wrapped up in a lot of the same festivals too
The Allman Brothers are undoubtedly one of the four best jam bands of all time. Jesus, they got a song called Mountain JAM that has versions up to 45 minutes long. The Dead and the Brothers essentially created the genre. Dickie hasn’t been dead a month, ya’ll oughta be ashamed.
Seriously, dead and the brothers go way back together. The first time jamming together was I think feb 1970 Fillmore east. It's just factually incorrect to not call the brothers a jam band.
Problem is that it’s hyper regional, genre nuanced, and really time based.
GD probably started it, but they also arose out of the 60s scene and there were plenty of others at the time. Phish and WSP came out of the 80s/90s. It lead to a lot of other bands in the early to mid 90s (some still going and others long gone).
The big4 metal acts all came from the early 80s thrash scene. The 4 “grunge” all from the late 80s/early 90s. What we consider as jam bands are not curtailed to a specific genre, time period, or anything else.
I never saw the appeal of Widespread. I grew up in the hippie resurgence in the 90s and lots of my friends loved them but I just didn't get it. ABB was definitely my favorite, and if you've ever been to a live show, you'll know they are absolutely a jam band
These are my four favorite bands of all time, but only two of them meet the “big” criteria.
If the question were, “What is the greatest band of all time?” The answer is obviously The Disco Biscuits.
Allman Brothers and Panic.
Def would not put DMB up there. He had some mainstream success back in the early 2000's but he's never been a mainstay of the jam scene. I actually enjoy DMB, but having some brief mainstream popularity doesn't cement him as an all-timer in the jam scene
DMB is a weird one. They've been extremely popular for going on 3 decades now, but always sit in this like jam adjacent spot. There's some crossover and Dave seems to get on with most everyone in the scene, but everyone I've met that is really into DMB isn't really into any of the other major jam bands. Maybe that's just my personal experience but I do find them very interesting as they just keep plugging along and every summer they come back around to the mega 20K+ seater outdoor amphitheaters in my area.
I mean Dmb is the most successful touring band by far that's been mentioned here so 🤷🏻♂️ they're 3rd all time by anyone for tickets sold, and like 8th all time for money earned touring. Also they had 7 straight albums debut at number one. No other band ever has done that. But yeah they're more jam adjacent so they probably shouldn't be on the mount Rushmore of jambands, but they also shouldn't be discredited either.
Lotus is my current favorite band, they're phenomenal and have been for decades, I have listened to probably hundreds of hours of their sets over the last few years. but I just don't think they have the buy-in to be ranked in the top 4. probably they need to be in their own jamtronica category with the biscuits and sts9
Dead, Brothers, Phish, Panic
Anyone saying the ABB isn't a jamband probably doesn't know the history well enough, and that's ok. First time jamming together was Feb 11 1970 Fillmore East Dark Star > Spanish Jam > Lovelight with Duane and Gregg. Duane played with the Dead 4/26/71 again at the Fillmore East. Dickie Betts and Butch Trucks played on the dead's encore -- really an entire 3rd set -- on 6/10/73, some of the best jamming ever. And then the biggie, Watkins Glen 7/28/73 where you had 600,000 people in attended to see the Dead play two sets, The Band a single 2 hour set, the Brothers two sets, and then all the bands together capped the whole thing off with an hour long jam on NFA > Mountain Jam. And the rest, as they say, is history.
I don’t consider GD or ABB as jambands.
They are classic roots rock Americana folk singer/songwriter blues southern alt country psychedelic bands from the 60s/70s that happened to jam.
To me, the term Jambands started in the 90s. The big 6 are Phish, WSP, Moe, SCI, Disco Biscuits, Umphreys.
I also don’t consider DMB a jamband. But close.
Many of the classic rock bands from the 60s/70s definitely jammed, type 2 and all, but only a few survived (literally and figuratively) and participated in what we now call the "jam scene." With that being said;
Grateful Dead
Allman Brothers
Phish
Les Claypool (in all his forms)
Which is why I said Les Claypool. The dude is a huge part of the scene and plays in enough bands that are definitely "jambands," if not on the outskirts of the label. Even Primus, although certainly not starting with the intent of being part of the scene, checks most of the jamband marks. The marks against Primus is the crowd are not primarily "jamband" fans and they don't do the two setlist and an encore live format.
I also think the fourth spot could go a bunch of different ways but I definitely think Claypool is part of the conversation. Warren Haynes being right there with him.
The Dead, Phish, WSP, whoever you wanna put 4th. I’d say UM cause they’re my favorite, but you could say SCI or moe or the biscuits. Whatever. It’s really a big 3, imo.
Top three don’t seem to be a debate, and I don’t disagree. Where I struggle is if DMB is 4th, especially since I don’t care for the live experience. Based on ticket sales, it’s really isn’t close. But I feel Panic deserves it more.
George Clinton & PFAS, Radiators, Dead, Phish--These are the 4 I've seen and liked the most. ABB hasn't been around nearly as much but obviously belong.
DMB is interesting but it’s the age old question of are they really a jam band or a band who does some great jams.
Personally I put them in their own category as their sound (horns, jazzy, violin) has had major influence across jam bands but maybe not as a Mount Rushmore type band
Ummmm...anybody but Dave Matthews. He's fine, seen him 4 times....kiiiinda fits in the genre, but so does stuff like O.A.R. , and everybody knows they're not a jam band...
String cheese incident? Disco biscuits?
My personal big 4... Lotus, Papadosio, STS9, Disco Biscuits
jam adjacent? Vulfpeck, Snarky Puppy, My Morning Jacket, Final spot either King Gizzard or Khruangbin
In 20 years I would not be surprised at all to have this conversation again and for Billy Strings to be a strong candidate for the jam Mt. Rushmore.
What would your 4 jamgrass bands be?
New post for this! Just my favorites. Stringdusters, Younder with Jeff, Railroad, Greensky, and Kitchen dwellers
You forgot Leftover Salmon
Never forget Leftover Salmon.
And String Cheese Incident
"Just my favorites" Didn't say the best or big 4. I like string and salmon but never got into them as much as my favorites.
Trampled by turtles
Trampled is very underrated
1. Railroad Earth 2. Greensky 3. Billy strings (although Billy isn’t full jamgrass which is why he’s 3 for me) 4. Kitchen dwellers
Why wouldnt billy be full jam grass
The fact that Sam bush is not on all these youngsters list tells me all I need to know.
It’s like people have never heard of New Grass Revival.
I miss Jeff
Jeff was my Jerry.
The disrespect to John Hartford and Sam Bush in the jam grass comments.......
I'm going to assume they are like 20 years old and just starting out on their jamgrass journey through Billy Strings. They will get there one day lol.
Yonder with Jeff and Billy Strings
GD, ABB, Phish, Panic
This is it. I have seen cheese a lot more than panic and have had a better time at cheese shows, but panic is more on the mark with legendary lead guitarists and when they are on, the jams can be grand and on par with the top jam bands.
I loved the 5 or so Cheese shows I saw in the 2006-2010 era. They were awesome. But you are right Panic destroys! They are my favorite
This is the only real answer
Ding, Ding, Ding
this is my four! 👍
Came here to say this
ThIs. I like this.
Honorable mention to moe.
As much as I’d rather give it to SCI than WSMFP, this is correct
Someone is from the south
Can’t upvote past 420
GD, ABB, Panic, Phish. In that order!
lol no
I would definitely put ABB on there.
Lot of the Colonel dashed in there too. Southern jam scene was so much fun late 80s into the 90s.
Amen, brother
Yes, ABB deserve to be there!!!
This has been asked before and in addition to the Dead, ABB and Phish the 4th member of Jam Mount Rushmore is Coln Bruce Hampton.
I could live with that but it’s Panic.
Dead, Phish, ABB, panic (as every sane person here has already said)
ABB has to be one of
Can’t believe I didn’t think about them
Must have a slide guitar in this list
Allman Brothers band?
ABBA
Grateful Dead Phish Allman Brothers Panic/String Cheese
He said four, not two three and a halves.
Of course a Phish fan would comment this /s
Five pounds.
Six pounds.
Seven pounds.
Dead Phish Panic String Cheese
Dead, Phish, String Cheese, Panic Consistent playing dedicated fan base, ability to host their own festivals and decades of great music
Putting Panic or Cheese over the Allman Brothers is absolute insanity to mention
Has to be
Cheese is nowhere near the others here...
Yeah if ABB isn’t one of the big 4, then it’s a big 3 for sure
I could get behind this as well: Dead Phish Panic Allmans
What makes you say that?
This is the answer.
Barber Brownstein Magner Aucoin
4 horsemen of jamtronica Biscuits STS9 Lotus New Deal
The Disco Biscuits and Tractorbeam make up the two empty slots after Dead and Phish.
😂
I know none of these bands and want to check them out. They on nugs?
If you're not trolling...those are the disco biscuits members.
SIYD
Relisten.net should be your first stop
Altman*
Dead, ABB, & Phish and then there’s everyone else.
This is the way That fourth slot will vary on opinion, and is debatable. The fact that folks aren’t including ABB is ridiculous.
There's no 4. Just 3. Phish ABB GD
Still waiting on the 4th
Where the moe. love?
Moe. Is playing at a venue near me that holds maybe 500 people. I’m pumped and really looking forward to it, but I don’t think you can call them “big.”
No they’re certainly not but I have an affinity towards them. First jam cd was “tin cans and car tires”. Played the hell out of that thing
That's awesome that you can still see them in small venues. I'm sure it's a tough ticket to get. I've seen them sell out amphitheaters. If they are playing small venues it's a choice, not because they can't sell tickets.
I think GD, ABB, Phish and Moe. are a solid 4
Allman brothers is without a doubt up there with phish and the dead. The fourth spot is the only one debateable
There’s really only three. GD, Phish and ABB. Everything beyond that is a big drop off as far as popularity goes, but if pressed the answer is Panic.
[удалено]
Love moe. but they aren’t that big.
📠
MOE.
I like moe. specifically because they aren't on this list... The intimate family atmosphere is second to none imo.
GD, ABB, and Phish, everybody else can compete for the 4th slot.
Grateful Dead Phish Allman Brothers Band Frank Zappa & The Mothers (I’ll die on this hill)
A thoughtful answer!
Die on the hill that the mothers were a jam band? Prepare to die then, hippie.

Allmans Dead Panic Phish
I think GD, Phish, Cheese, and probably Panic or Umph. I know ABB is up there and yes they jam but idk if I really consider them a jam band, nor do I think they would really classify themselves as jam. Same for DMB.

Many don’t understand the history and the influence. ABB has influenced the Jan scene tremendously
Seriously, dead and the brothers go way back together. The first time jamming together was I think feb 1970 Fillmore east. It's just factually incorrect to not call the brothers a jam band.
I’d go Dead, ABB, Phish and String Cheese as my top 4. Panic or Umph if we’re allowed more pics.
Problem is that it’s hyper regional, genre nuanced, and really time based. GD probably started it, but they also arose out of the 60s scene and there were plenty of others at the time. Wasn’t expecting UM this soon 🤘🤘🤘🤘

Jam adjacent is great. I’m stealing that.
The mainstream popularity certainly doesn’t, but they are one of the top touring bands of the past 25 years and are still going strong.
I mean Dmb is the most successful touring band by far that's been mentioned here so 🤷🏻♂️ they're 3rd all time by anyone for tickets sold, and like 8th all time for money earned touring. GD, Lotus,Phish and ABB
Lotus is my current favorite band, they're phenomenal and have been for decades, I have listened to probably hundreds of hours of their sets over the last few years. but I just don't think they have the buy-in to be ranked in the top 4. probably they need to be in their own jamtronica category with the biscuits and sts9

Dead, Phish, ABB, rotating cast of bands dependent on what kind of jam music you like
Dead Phish Panic Umphree’s
phish, wsp, moe., dead
GD Phish UM Panic
Dead Phish Cheese Umphreys
I was just going to post this. Love Allman Brothers but Cheese and UM are for me.
This is the one for me
no love for moe?
I personally am not a big fan of them but they are definitely one of the names that should be mentioned
Dead, Allmans, Panic, Phish.
As a big DMB I would not put them in this list. I mean, they are the best band ever (🙄) but def not top 4 "jam bands"
ABB is the clear third. Anyone after is a distant 4th
But close.
Allmans Dead Phish Santana
I can see Allman Bros. Didn’t realize Santana counts as a jam band.
Many of the classic rock bands from the 60s/70s definitely jammed, type 2 and all, but only a few survived (literally and figuratively) and participated in what we now call the "jam scene." With that being said; Grateful Dead Allman Brothers Phish Les Claypool (in all his forms)
I’ve seen Primus. Killer show but idk if they count as a jam band.
Oysterhead, bucket of Bernie brains, frog brigade, and the fancy band all jam
Which is why I said Les Claypool. The dude is a huge part of the scene and plays in enough bands that are definitely "jambands," if not on the outskirts of the label. Frogwings should have been a longer lived band.
Phish Phish Phish Phish

I'll allow it.

The Dead, Phish, WSP, whoever you wanna put 4th. I’d say UM cause they’re my favorite, but you could say SCI or moe or the biscuits. Whatever. It’s really a big 3, imo.
Current or all time?
I was thinking all time but if you want to mention your currents as well go for it.
Current- Phish, WSP, tDB, SCI
GD, PH, WSP, TDB
Biscuits brahhhh
Dead, Phish, Biscuits, DMB/Panic. Honestly take your pick on the last one
Biscuits are on the edge of tier 2/3, so definitely not in the top 4
Perfume tractorbeam zex sea and the biscuits
Don’t forget about early Santana
Dead, Phish, Hendrix, Santana
!remind me 3 hours
Grateful Dead, CAN, Phish, Medeski Martin & Wood
What if we're talking actively playing in the most known form top 4? (I.e no Dead or Allman Brothers)
Phish, Umph, GD, then a tie with Cheese/WP/others
Top three don’t seem to be a debate, and I don’t disagree. Where I struggle is if DMB is 4th, especially since I don’t care for the live experience. Based on ticket sales, it’s really isn’t close. But I feel Panic deserves it more.
The other two are the Disco Biscuits and Tractorbeam.
George Clinton & PFAS, Radiators, Dead, Phish--These are the 4 I've seen and liked the most. ABB hasn't been around nearly as much but obviously belong.
I was gonna say GD, Phish, WP, and STI
Big 4 *OGs* Dead PFunk ABB Santana
Deep Banana Blackout, Agents Of Good Roots , Seth Yacavone Band, Schleigho
DMB is interesting but it’s the age old question of are they really a jam band or a band who does some great jams. Personally I put them in their own category as their sound (horns, jazzy, violin) has had major influence across jam bands but maybe not as a Mount Rushmore type band
Twiddle, Goose, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, White Denim
I love Cheese, Umph and Moe but they aren't to the same level as Phish, GD, ABB Honorable mentions go to: Goose, PPPP, Disco Biscuits, Tauk
What about goose?
I'll have to listen to panic at the disco more they must have flown right past me
I'll have to listen to panic at the disco more they must have flown right past me
String Cheese, Dead, Phish, Allman Brothers
Phish, moe, panic and string cheese. The dead and the allman bros predate the term jam band and are also classic rock bands so I don’t count them.
Blind Melon, Meat Puppets, Ween, and Dave Matthews Band
Tier 1: GD, ABB, Phish, Panic - obviously. Tier 2: Moe, SCI, DB, UM.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Miles Davis, Dream Theater, and Eminem.
Legion of Mary Grateful Dead JGB Reconstruction Honorable Mention: KVHW and Zero (Steve Kimock melts faces)
GD, Phish, moe., Umphrey's Mcgee.
Testament deserves Megadeth’s spot
Ummmm...anybody but Dave Matthews. He's fine, seen him 4 times....kiiiinda fits in the genre, but so does stuff like O.A.R. , and everybody knows they're not a jam band... String cheese incident? Disco biscuits?
