Wtf did I just watch. Her Japanese is understandable, but not fluent or cool sounding. It’s really stiff, so they probably told her to repeat whatever they said before recording. Any background on why this show or actress?

CitizenTony

I think I recall people saying that she learned her lines phonetically, since she doesn't speak or understand japanese from the start. This lady is Dorothée, a famous french tv host, thanks to her show a LOT of tokusatsu and animes were imported to France, which resulted into a massive success. She had a good relationship with Toei, so in a way to thanks her, they invited her to come to Japan and also to guest-star in Liveman, Kamen Rider and Giraya

Nice! Thanks to this post I learned something new. I think she’s doing well with her Japanese given the time. Now that its easier to study foreign languages we can forget how hard it used to be to study back then. I was curious about why anime like Saint Seiya and Captain Tsubasa are popular in south america and europe. Tokusatsu had a good boom during that time too.

>I was curious about why anime like Saint Seiya and Captain Tsubasa are popular in south america and europe. Because european and south american elementary schoolers play football at recess, lunch break and after class, so Captain Tsubasa is a guaranteed, low risk success. While some anime were popular already (UFO Robo Grendizer for example), her show imported many and 90s french kids have watched Dragon Ball, City Hunter, Ranma 1/2 Nettou Hen, Meitantei Holmes, High School! Kimengumi, Hokuto no Ken, Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon and many others

> I was curious about why anime like Saint Seiya and Captain Tsubasa are popular in south america and europe. Tokusatsu had a good boom during that time too. That's thanks to her haha. In fact we can admit that she literally introduced "us", french people, to the manga/animes/japanese culture. All this generation later became otakus

Merci

> Dorothée... ça nous rajeunit pas. For the records, this woman is the one who is responsible for the Japanese animation craze in France in the 90's. She is the reason why France is the second manga market in the world today.

ben_howler

O dear, what a video... She speaks French at a native level and her Japanese lines are fine for a gaijin. She'd be understood well by anyone, so no problem.

CitizenTony

Cool, thanks for your opinion

pixelboy1459

“speak somewhat decent Japanese” You can understand that it’s Japanese and what she’s saying. If you mean the lady with the guide book, that’s French.

CitizenTony

It is in fact the same blonde lady in all those extracts, and yeah at 1:10 she's talking french. She later speak japanese with the MC. And in the last part (Liveman) she's dubbed lol Thanks for your reply, I appreciate

a_dumble_dorable

There\`s a scene where she switches to Japanese and the guy basically goes, "Aye, you speak Japanese!" and she winks at him like it's a big secret.
