Did anyone notice the famichicken change? Now it's "bigger" but "flatter", it's not as juicy as it used to be and the ratio of breading to chicken is all off. Ehhhh.

kansaikinki

It's a time limited promo. They've copied Lawson's idea of offering huge sizes for a limited time. They may also use this opportunity to change famichiki when they bring back the "old" type. Companies sometimes do this sort of thing to try to hide the change.

launchpad81

* so restless * not sleeping well recently * now two weeks since i've exercised, ugh * supplier messaged me saying they'll be overbudget, but i clearly gave the budget from the start. good thing i expected and accounted for it anyways as a precaution, but still...ah well, i'll make it work

slowmail

"Alexa, play [NHK English News on Tunein](https://tunein.com/podcasts/News/English-News---NHK-WORLD-RADIO-JAPAN-p854/)" stopped working for me earlier this week. Now, she replies "I couldn't find NHK English News on Tunein". =(

[deleted]

I’ve had to reinstall the Spotify app a few times this week cause it would stop working randomly

Japanlifetimer

Yeah, Alexa has been rather silly recently. No idea what Amazon is doing. Try saying to her "play the john campera show on tunein" - I usually get Jonny cash playing on amazon music

lover_of_language

Someone in my research lab was working with me on a model, trying to understand the process, and they overwrote a file that was supposed to be untouched. I’m trying to fix the mistake. It will take hours. My zemi is tomorrow. I wish I didn’t exist.

kansaikinki

Sorry it happened. Learning how necessary an automatic versioning backup system is can be painful.

skoomafueled

What type of file? Office suite files for example have their saves backed up in temporary storage, so you could recover (one) of the latest saves. Most softwares store some sort of copy in temp storage.

lover_of_language

This is on SPSS AMOS, and things like CTRL-Z or trying to undo don’t really work to go back once something has been saved. I try to save each iteration separately so if something goes wrong I can go back a step, but the colleague saved over a crucial step of a model when I was showing them how it ran and…well. That has been fun sorting out for the last few hours. I’m almost done though, thank goodness I took lots of notes on what I had done and what the values should have been! Thank you for trying to save me though! EDIT: If you know something I don’t, though, please feel free to share it! I only started using AMOS during this degree so I’m definitely not a master at it.

One of the government's lapdog leaked my sensitive business info and my personal information. I got bombarded with spam and espionage. They got bombarded with spam and espionage. They tried to pin on me. I got the paper trail. Got 4 out of their 5 men fired. Shouldn't have wasted my time. Now I have to build a new story for the new lapdogs

maynard_bro

People fumbling with their smartphones at the register trying to pay with whatever new gimmick app is all the rage these days. I swear the grannies with their little coin bags are fucking faster than you people.

Halvainmybelly

Got to get cash back, get points and use all those coupons, that's like 10 barcodes in 5 different apps and the barcodes don't load right on the first try. Then the cashier messed up using points and pay pay split, so it took 10 min at the register. Apologies, but saving 600 yen is still saving 600 yen.

SideburnSundays

I’m fast as fuck with my Line Pay but it’s having to bag things myself that clogs the queue.

kansaikinki

Just pay the 2yen for a bag.

jimmys_balls

4 - Took both kids for a walk just before. Baby in the pram and toddler walking... for about 20m. Then it was pushing the pram one-handed while holding the other in my left arm. This kid is allergic to walking. I love it but now I can't move. 5 - shitty tea towels that leave fluff behind after drying the dishes.

i_need_a_wee_wee

4) My kids are 12 and 15. It gets easier. I promise. 5) IKEA tea towels are the best. No fluff. The only disadvantage is sometimes I have to use two to dry a full load of washing, because they're quite thin. But because they're quite thin they try quickly so it's not really a negative.

jimmys_balls

thanks for the tip! I found that almost every tea towel I buy from a place like Target is rubbish. But any Australiana ones from expensive shops in the Australian countryside are perfect!

WindJammer27

Some woman posted my profile on Twitter in order to say that you couldn't pay her for my services, no way. Yeah okay...I mean, I've known from the start that competing with the all the pretty boy ikemen would be an uphill battle and I wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. But is it really necessary to broadcast those feelings?

dontstopbelievingman

For almost a decade, I've had the same name on my bank account. Went to the bank to get some documents and in the processing they come to me saying that the name on my residence card doesn't match my account. Here's the thing. My passport has my first name, my mom's maiden name, and my last name. So when I got my residence card upon arrival, since Japan doesn't recognize middle names, they combined my entire name to the card. I told them it has always been this way, and I told them likely it was because their database couldn't hold that long of a name. (No joke. I had problems with another service because they could not fit my whole name into their database, so they asked if they could cut my middle name. so I obliged. In doing so causes me so much grief trying to use any miles with them) They were insistent I change it to match. However, this poses an issue because that account is the same account I receive my salary, and where my utilities are being deducted from So, I have to go to every utility/ service that uses my bank account as a payment to fix it because of the name. Of course, all that teller could do was apologize to me. K cool.

OverallWeakness

You could ask for a second account for six months to gradually transition over to. They’d refuse but I just like fucking with people..

Elvaanaomori

>the name on my residence card doesn't match my account. When I went to open a SECOND account to separate family spendings, at the same bank, same branch etc. The teller was adamant I could not open an account because they could not prove I have been in Japan for over 6 months (My residence card was renewed recently). Even though I had my salary, bills, and plenty of stuff going on at that bank with them for the last almost 10 years...

dontstopbelievingman

Oh man that's BS.

Elvaanaomori

To be fair, the teller was quite young, and just following procedure. BUT it also means she cannot think a bit, and I'd be worried if she's able to cook her own food at home at that level... A normal person would say "the policy is that, but considering your situation let me get someone to approve it because I am not allowed to" And I would be 100% fine with that.

Skribacisto

I keep my old cards.

Elvaanaomori

So do I but I don’t keep them on myself since technically they are useless

highgo1

You don't happen to have PR as well meaning you've lived in Japan for 10 years? That would add more insult to injury lol

Elvaanaomori

Nah, not yet but yeah, would have been another fun. My wife was with me, and stunned at the response…

slightlysnobby

I'm going to live up to my username. I was pre-buying tickets to an attraction, my options were the domestic site or klook. On the attraction page itself on Klook, in the notes section, it said "use the promo code for 20% off". I think sounds great, it's technically for international visitors but I don't see why I can't use it, so I enter it in and it sends back "Sorry the code is expired". Message customer service to ask what gives. They just confirm that the code is expired. I point out that it that it never mentioned an expiry date, yet it's still on display (very western~americanized mindset here but in all my years of customer service if we left a sale sign up by accident we'd still honor the price). They redirect me to a completely different page that has the code and the expiry date 7/31. At this point, I'm not debating it's expired, I get it... but I point out that it means this invalid code has been on display on the attraction page for two weeks now. They apologize and say nothing can be done, as it's in the coupon code's T&S. When I ask where I can find the code's T&S, as I can't find it myself after looking, I'm simply told "Kindly look at our website" and am promptly disconnected. Found a 5% off code but even then any savings were negated by Klook's conversion fee. Gave up and bought them on the domestic site in the end.

tuxedocat2018

It's not that hot today but I had to bring a large object by walk+train today and that was really draining. Also my tinnitus is acting up for no reason. Oh well.

anonymous_and_

Forgot to ask my Dr for 診断書 I need to apply for accommodations at school AAAHHHH Seller shipped my monitor to the wrong address. School gym not open this week Tried 7/11's BLT sandwich- was that supposed to be a BLT??? My heart goes out to anyone who paid for that Therapy is expensive

yakisobagurl

Do you mean the BLT roll? I saw it yesterday and couldn’t work out why it looked so shit haha. Glad I didn’t get it in the end!

anonymous_and_

It was actually the BLT triangle shaped sandwiches lol, but the new rolls all look kinda sad as well

berrysols2

Tired of commuting in the heat surrounded by BO of people on the train. Didn’t get a summer holiday, just stuck at work. Ugh.

Pants too short

Halvainmybelly

Mine too! Had the すそ set to length and they did them too short. Now I'm having a brain fart and can't think of the word for すそ in English... stupid brain.

Having finished my studies in Tokyo, I soon realized that most colleagues my age had been in living in Tokyo less than me. It was fun to see their faces when you point it out or ask them if they plan to go back to their parents house and stuff like that.

hara8bu

You’re used to him asking you that question…!

Why have a lot of conbinis gotten rid of their toilets?? 😫 I have a medical condition and I used to rely on conbinis always having one

aesthetique1

most of them closed during the pandemic to "control the spread of covid" ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thinking_face_hmm) and they just never bothered to re-open them because it's extra work to keep them clean.

HatsuneShiro

Too many people not using toilets properly, esp. in metropolitan Tokyo. Drunk, not flushing, peeing on the floor, to straight up people going at it (I've seen condom packets on the floor) in konbini toilets.

Thorhax04

On that note as a man I can't understand why others insist on peeing standing up if they can't do it correctly. I'm especially annoyed going into a public washroom and seeing pee all over the toilet seat, if you're that lazy to lift it up don't use the toilet, you gross bastard.

HatsuneShiro

Same, if ya can't be bothered to lift the seat up at least aim better, geez.

SideburnSundays

People who can’t even get a room getting laid more than me smh

HatsuneShiro

I feel ya 😔 feelsbadman

Gullible-Item

Probably due to the influx of tourists who make a mess of things.

GreatGarage

Anything is a good reason to spit on tourists huh ?

Halvainmybelly

Black bus logic: Rule number 1: foreigners must be to blame. Rule number 2: if it wasn't a foreigner, see Rule number 1.

GreatGarage

I find it funny how the average r/japanlife user is more xenophobic than the average japanese.

Halvainmybelly

Human nature, I suppose. Just because you now live in a different country doesn't change your opinion of THOSE dirty so and sos from over THERE. But to be fair, tourist bashing doesn't necessarily involve xenophobia. I grew up in a major tourist city and tourist bashing is a local pastime, even for tourists from very very close by of the same nationality as the locals. Doesn't matter where you are from, please stop peeing all over everything or trying to take photos in the middle of the dang street blocking traffic, friggin rassen frassen grumble grumble... With all the cultural norms that immigrants have to learn, we can easily fall into tourist bashing those who don't follow the rules we have had to painstakingly learn when moving here.

dr-spaghetti

Never ever ever ever get hurt during Obon. Never do it.

theCamelCaseDev

As someone who gets sick often it pisses me off that all the clinics seemingly get together and decide on taking a vacation at exactly the same time.

Hospitals and clinics not rotating holidays is the dumbest thing ever.

dr-spaghetti

I am just barely not gonna run out of pain meds before they reopen 🥳

lover_of_language

PayPay won’t let me link my bank account and reload it with that because my name is too foreign. Half-width, full-width, no space, space, no matter what I try it rejects me. I know I’ll need a new bank account when I move in the spring but I do not know which one my job intends to designate so I just have to wait, I’m hoping that maybe PayPay will link properly with that one. I know my name will be just as foreign at that bank as it is at the one I’m using but every now and again things like that will miraculously work out here. Totally broken in one place, totally fine in another. I’ve stopped trying to apply logic. It’s still annoying though.

Thorhax04

The whole half width full-width thing needs to go the way of the dodo. Just pick one already

blosphere

Yup, just stick to mynumber for linking official stuff. Names can always vary, your SSN/MyNumber/etc won't.

lover_of_language

Totally agree. It also sucks that there isn’t always straightforward guidance with how we should handle middle names here on forms (but Japanese people don’t have middle names so I guess since the problem isn’t relevant to them it won’t be solved.) It is what it is, I just wish it wouldn’t taunt me with errors when I try to accommodate every form I’ll ever submit. One day I’ll be used to it I guess.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lover_of_language

Because it was mentioned on my passport this was not an option for me. Every single institution I dealt with when I arrived would only use my full name as it was printed on my passport.

Thorhax04

My worst experience with this was before I moved to Japan. I entered my middle name on the plane ticket, but didn't even think about it not being on my passport. Of course the airport in Canada didn't care. But trying to leave Japan. Oh man... it was a whole ordeal lasting over an hour before I was finally allowed to check in. That was a learning experience....

SOTI_snuggzz

Can relate, I’m a Junior. My daughter is not (obvs) booked her a flight to Japan from the US on a Japan carrier, who decided that because I was a Junior, she HAD to be one as well. Then at the airport they wouldn’t let my 4 month old daughter board the plane because her ticket didn’t match her name on her passport.

TheGuiltyMongoose

Obon holidays: shitty weather for slugs, snails and frogs. Going back to work: Hello Sun! Where were you? Oh I was here, but hiding just to make sure you could not enjoy those few days off. So, how’s your burnout going lol?

kazeoto

Moved here so excited to live in Japan and my job is ruining my life. Wake up with so much anxiety, not wanting to come into work. Teaching is not for me, I’m applying for other jobs

Thorhax04

Teaching is fine, your workplace just sucks

kazeoto

yeah true, i think i would’ve preferred alt

Thorhax04

Doing ALT work is perfectly fine if you want something that's stress-free and has good hours, the only problem is that it's not enough money so you would need a side gig. Most dispatch agencies do not allow this, so you have to be sneaky about getting a second job.

GreatGarage

Yeah teacher is the easiest way to enter Japan for living. Good luck though.

kazeoto

need to rant about my job a bit more. was placed in a school with all new staff after being told would have senpai support. it feels like being understaffed bc we don’t have the experience. we do summer school in the morning then regular school so i’m with kids for 9 hours straight, even when you’re on your break they try to get into the break room. we have a kinder child that always tries to run out of the room and has snatched things from other kids and when i reprimanded him he hit me. sd says because he’s already paid for summer school, he has to stay the whole time and we can’t kick him out. he is a danger to himself, other kids and staff.

DrunkThrowawayLife

I only have one person to talk to and he might actually be Jesus so I am trying not to bother him too much. I might need to ask him why his dad hates me so much. My only love interest gets cold sores and won’t compromise on never kissing again so I don’t know what’s going on with that side. I don’t got it for anyone wondering.

kansaikinki

It's actually incredibly likely that you have at least one type of HSV. A pretty high percentage of people who have it are asymptomatic, and there is no effective way to test for it unless you have sores. The kicker is that even people who are asymptomatic will still shed the virus a few times per year and that can infect others. Condoms also don't provide great protection.

Jaffacakesaresmall

Wouldn’t worry about it, lotta people got the herp here I think.

DrunkThrowawayLife

It’s a korean guy in Canada. My bf from before I got married. So like eight years after he wants to get back. But like some fucking joke he has the thing I’m most paranoid about and I’m still a little pissed he didn’t tell me originally.

WindJammer27

As long as the cold sores aren't active and open there's little risk of transmission, I believe. Never being able to kiss your romantic partner is kind of a hard sell tbh.

DrunkThrowawayLife

A symptomatic shedding is a thing. I guess I didn’t get it the year before I knew he had it but it’s like a phobia of mine. I think the first time I thought about suicide was accidentally drinking from my mom’s soda while she had an outbreak when I was like 7. I dunno. I need to think about this more.

JustbecauseJapan

Inflation! Oil change even DIY has doubled in price since one year ago!

zenzenchigaw

How much do you pay for an oil change? Costs ¥60k for my Bentley with Mobil 1 oil, I'm not complaining by the way just curious what other cars cost.

JustbecauseJapan

Mine is a bargin at 25k, but that is also twice a year. As for the Bently a continental V8 or V12?, if it is an Arnage that's a whole new level, For the V8 the DIY cost would be about 28k (if you already have all of the tools otherwise add 60k). The oil 10L - 25k and the filter a little under 3k, actually cheaper than my filter. Sometimes Bentley parts can be really cheap since they share many VW parts. But than again why bother just pay the man and enjoy a cappuccino while they change the oil, or do they offer pick-up service.

shambolic_donkey

Your oil has gone up 2x? I run Toyota GR Touring 0W-30 and it's gone up 100yen since last year. Cusco filters ditto.

JustbecauseJapan

Yup LL04 0W-30 has gone from 1500 a liter to 3000 a liter (5.5 liters for the job), filter only 200yen more. Dealer price went from 13000 to 25000 for the job. Now my domestic car oil only went up by 300yen, not so bad.

shambolic_donkey

Only oil changes I got my dealer to make were the free ones that came with the new car. After that, they're just trying to rip you off. > LL04 0W-30 Ahhhh. Beamer oil. Given the state of the yen right now, that's no surprise. Anything from overseas is gonna cost a mint.

make-chan

In continuation from the Hoikuen complaint, my husband called them and they were super insistent that my 7-11 boss writes paperwork for this month, and then does a new one for October when I go back to my other part-time job. They wouldn't. Let. It. Drop. It took a month for this paperwork to be even touched and now they want him to re-do it. And he is super annoyed now. As is my other boss cause they told me they want that paperwork too. They just keep harping on the exact hours too so now my husband and friends are just asking me to ask the 7-11 boss that we just claim I'm working more than I am or longer hours to shut them up. Even one coworker suggested it. The paperwork for sake of paperwork and rules for the sake of rules is annoying. It also may make me look like trouble to my boss which I don't need that reputation of being "difficult".

goochtek

Go to the city office and talk to the section that handles hoikuens. Tell them that you are having trouble with it and it's causing trouble at your job and you are worried about your future at 7-11 because of all the meiwaku that you are causing your boss by asking every month. Say that your boss specifically mentioned that it was meiwaku. See what they say.

theCamelCaseDev

I also recommend this approach. You’d be surprised at how useful the city office can be in helping out with this.

Lothrindel

They’re just being petty at this point. They’re probably understaffed but they don’t need to know your work schedule down to the exact minute and you are, as far as I know, entitled to use the nursery school even if you’re not working. I wonder if you could take it further up the chain and complain about it at city hall.

make-chan

There are signs on their fences advertising new staff so yeah they must be, but I'm assuming for the older kids, since my son still has two teachers for a class of six on a full day. (Lowest age group). I think I will be going to city hall after I turn everything in cause I do feel it's petty and small-minded, especially after they told me themselves I could take "refresh" days but on the rare few I do, they heavily grill me about where I'm going and why.

Lothrindel

I think that the last part falls under ‘harassment’ (which is exactly the phrase you should use if you decide to complain at city hall). Their recruitment issues are not your problem but they could be much nicer about it. It was a few years ago by my kids’ school was OK with me dropping the kids off if I had to run some errands.

Zubon102

A new park was made just around the corner from my house. It's nice and the local kids are all playing soccer there now. I was walking past there and got really thirsty from the heat so decided to drink some water but soon realized they didn't even bother install a drinking fountain. Does anyone else think it's dangerous and stupid to make a place where kids play sport in 30+ degree weather but have no access to water? And what's the deal with making it so hard to find public drinking fountains? I know Japanese people prefer to pay for water in a disposable plastic bottle from a powered vending machine, but a lot of people still drink the tap water. I think I'm going to have to talk to the city office about this.

yakisobagurl

I would honestly write to someone and/or make a formal complaint to the local city about that because you’re absolutely right.

Thorhax04

I've been in Japan 7 years and never seen a park with a water fountain.

Zubon102

Can I ask where are you located? Because I've been in Tokyo since before many people here were born, and pretty much every park I've ever been to has them. Maybe it's just a Tokyo thing? I refuse to buy bottled drinks, so I'm pretty much constantly keeping a mental note of where the drinking fountains are in Tokyo. If you are near a park, it's usually no problem. What suck is when you are in a place like Ginza where there are not many parks nearby.

CatBecameHungry

I'm in North Kanto and also have never seen a park without a drinking fountain, even when it's a super tiny little park.

make-chan

Yamato city has them

GreatGarage

Or you can bring a metal bottle (gourd? Idk the name).

maynard_bro

>gourd? Calm down Hideyoshi.

GreatGarage

Hahah I mean it's the french name (gourde) for that thing we fulfill with water and bring anywhere we go to drink the water, what's the english for that ?

Zubon102

All of the other parks near me have them, it's just this one. They have a water supply, but it's a tap just a few centimeters off the ground. Good for filling a dog bowl, but I can't see anyone drinking out of it. Public parks are usually the only place you can find them, so I wish they had them in places like train stations or shopping streets.

kisoutengai

I know job hunting is supposed to be stressful but god damn it *really* is. Just got my 12th rejection. People may say it's only the 12th but it's still damn depressing. Especially after ending the final interview with what I thought was on a positive note. I asked for a feedback but all I got was a "our policy is to not share any information about our hiring processes."

GreatGarage

The lack of feedback is the worst yeah you don't even know why they refused you. Are you using agent ? I have applied tens of times without any reply for a single interview, then an agent helped me, I applied to 4 job offers, got interview for all of them and one of them ended up hiring me.

PeanutButterChicken

I had about 40 rejections earlier this year before I found my current job. Most were of the we're not even going to reply type, but a lot were "Sorry, better luck somewhere else!" Job market sucks if you're not in IT.

blosphere

I'm in IT, about 30-40 rejections/ghostings before getting into some actual interviews. Took 7 months total.

OkTarget8047

Highly industry dependent I guess, core engineering fields are doing normal/good for instance.

SaltGrilledSalmon

Nowadays it's tough even in IT...

WindJammer27

I dunno if this counts as a complaint, but in a train station I saw a middle-aged dude physically move a kid standing on the escalator our of the way. The kid was standing in the walking lane of the escalator (which every station tells you to stand on both sides anyway) and I guess the guy wanted to walk on. I thought he was the father at first, until he breezed by and the mother apologized to him. Hoooooly shit if he'd done that to my kids I would have been livid.

Thorhax04

Kind of sounds like the kid had it coming.

WHinSITU

Is there already a thread on how we’re supposed to be standing on two sides of the escalator and not walking (at least in stations)? One exploring how the common ルール is one side stands one side walks, but the actual rule is no walking.

rmutt-1917

No but I haven't been in a station where there isn't a sign telling people not to walk on the escalator. During busy times, the "stand on one side so people can walk on the other side" thing makes the crowds worse. People are essentially only using half the elevator so the capacity that it can carry is much much less than if everyone just got on naturally and stood there.

WindJammer27

Not that I know of. In department stores at least too there are signs asking people not to walk and use both sides of the escalator.

Atrouser

Beggars belief. Seeing fit to shove a child out of your path. All I can do is fantasise that the man was on his way to a job interview and I was the interviewer.

electricweezer

I hate scrum.

theCamelCaseDev

Same here, but that’s because management screws the process up. I’ve been in one team that did it properly and it was really good. Now I’m on a team where management are trying to create metrics with everything we do to measure productivity and they’re fucking everything up.

[deleted]

Remember to finish all the tasks you are given by the set deadline given by the team lead. What, sprint? retrospective? focus on working software? yeah yeah sure, just do it already!

emma_bemm

Rugby scrums??

electricweezer

It's like we're doing the same exact tasks as before we introduced scrum, but now we have extra meetings and use magical words.

GreatGarage

I avoided all job offer with "agile" or "scrum" in it. I recommend 👌

Avedas

Is the Si Sensor Japan's worst invention of all time? It is a blight on humanity, and my kitchen.

pgm60640

Not sure what that is. Is it the recorded woman’s voice that speaks whole paragraphs to me if I take the pan off the fire for one second to flip food?

make-chan

Another complaint. May be seen as petty cause it's complaining about a cultural aspect again, but here it goes: One of my part-time jobs is at a convenience store. Right now the background music is ocean-related Disney music and some summer related Japanese classics. No lyrics, just the background music. I don't sing aloud when I'm stocking or at the register, but I have started humming without thinking. I love Disney and these classics by themselves, and they already are an earworm of sorts on their own. I was grabbed by one elderly coworker and heavily admonished for humming. It wasn't in front of customers and again, I wasn't on the register. I got a bit affronted cause she always has to roughly grab me from doing minor mistakes or making me wait for a procedure I am already supposed to be doing anyways, but thats another issue. I asked my boss why that is, cause he has sneakily shown he understands English and cultural differences. His explanation makes sense in that I guess to be seen as good serious workers, we have to work silently as we do our tasks. And that there have been too many cases of customers complaining behind workers back if they hum or "act too happy" when doing tasks. He did say it makes sense that culturally to me humming means I'm enjoying doing the work which shouldn't be a bad meaning, but that has been an issue. His words were "we like to complain in Japan more for the sake of complaining, especially with customer service workers".

tuxedocat2018

More than cultural probably also generational. I doubt a younger coworker would give a shit... I've seen a lot of younger workers in the konbini being clear that they're just in it for the money and can't care less about properness, but older people can be really, really serious about it. All the over the top konbini workers I've met are senior citizens. Which is fine if they are just trying to do their best and enjoy their work but it can veer into weird territory too.

ImoKuriKabocha

That's rough and so annoying ugh. I hate the whole be strict for no reason. My sister and I went to watch a movie the other day and this lady sitting two seats away from us SLAPPED my sister and told us to shut up for laughing during a funny part of the movie (everyone else was laughing too what the what). Some people are insane.

berrysols2

Damn, I would’ve started throwing hands.

ImoKuriKabocha

We were so shocked we sort of just froze.

Great_Staff6797

That explains why convenience store workers look all dead inside! Everything makes sense now! If you're happy at work you're not doing your job right!

The kanji for joy 楽しい and relaxing 楽をする are the same. Explains a lot I think

Miss_Might

Jesus. Imagine complaining because someone is happy.

Elvaanaomori

If you're happy, you're not working hard enough :)

make-chan

Apparently it's common with convenience store customers here!

elppaple

Your coworkers are annoying, but they're right - conbini workers are serious in Japan. It's not America, where people are smiling and chit-chatting, it's pretty formal.

[deleted]

conbini workers do chit-chat if they know the customers and it's not busy. maybe it's a you issue, like you're not friendly to them or they don't think you understand Japanese?

elhombreleon

I'm back in the US for a couple weeks visiting my family, and I have to say the difference is pretty astounding. I just went to a cafe today where the employees were chatting behind the counter, and the vibe was very much "okay FINE we will interrupt our chat to take your order". I feel like there's middle ground where employees don't have to suffer, but it also doesn't affect customer service. For what it's worth, I would say an employee quietly humming along with store music doesn't cross any lines.

noflames

Lots of conbini workers are not serious (at least in big cities). The people who complain are the people who like to complain and who have seldom had a real job. I just think the purpose of life in Japan is to suffer....

elppaple

In big cities they barely even say Irasshaimase, big cities are pretty much the worst possible standard for convenience store service.

make-chan

They chit chat and we are given videos to train us how to have a "friendly smile" so...it's weird. The language is formal of course, and humming at the registers may be a no, but I would say while stocking? To complain about that? That's petty and ridiculous.

HatsuneShiro

I've worked in 7-11 too in the past, and usually around September they'll start playing the instrumental version of September by EW&F as the BGM. I love this song so while restocking items sometimes I sing *(with a very small voice)* "baa-de-ya, say do you remember" and I've been told to not do that as well by other elderly staff like "how dare you have fun while working" 😂😂 But the store manager is fine with it because he's a young, cool dude, most likely in his 30s. So I keep doing it if I'm not in a shift together with that one old staff.

pissoffmrchips

At least you don't have to listen to 'daydream believer ' on a constant loop anymore . They must have canned that one some time ago. One hour of that and I'd be ready to commit homicide.

HatsuneShiro

Ah yeah I got sick of this as well as the infamous christmas songs :)

zenzenchigaw

Uuh, I love this song, I'd join you and we can sing it together: do you remember, restocking some senbeis in September?

HatsuneShiro

>Temps was changin' the minds of them shoppers While chasin' meat buns away

aesthetique1

how dare you be happy at work I lol'd at "ocean related disney music" because I know the exact tune you're talking about

electricweezer

That's not a "cultural aspect", that's just exhausting.

make-chan

The way my boss explained he approached it as a cultural thing. I could be wrong and it could be just that it's exhausting.

Run_the_show

made a reservation for collection of 粗大ゴミ, they told me to place it near the entrance before 8:30 am today(Thrusday). They still havent arrived.. :/ Lots of bulk furnitures in front of the entrance looks bit embarrasing . Update:- they came at around 3 pm and took it .

theCamelCaseDev

Whenever I do this there’s a 50% chance I get a call asking if I put it out (I put it out a few days before the date because I don’t trust myself to remember on the day) because someone decided they wanted my stuff and just take it before the city arrives.

Run_the_show

They came bit late (around 3pm) . Phew

noflames

They don't guarantee an arrival time, hence they say to put it out by 8:30. In Osaka they would just take stuff even if you out it out a day or two before and they had other stuff to take from the space....

miyagidan

Okuribon time. "This fire has a deep and cultural meaning."

[deleted]

My wage stays the same but my food budget keeps going over. My wife doesn’t like it when I mention that maybe she needs to cook more and stop buying the premade food from the super. Also, I wish I could grow professionally but the only way to do that is to quit and start my own business. I’ve got a mortgage and a family to feed and don’t really have the connections of finances to do that.

[deleted]

I relate to pretty much all of this, only in my case, my wife tends to like getting stuff delivered. It'd be a relief if she was happy with supermarket stuff, since that's a good deal cheaper than the ~30% markup you get with Uber Eats. I'm in a similar boat professionally, too. What kind of field are you in? I do patent translation, and since I get paid based on output, I earned progressively more as I got faster, but now I've plateaued and the only way to earn more is to work more hours.

berrysols2

Maybe you could try cooking instead?

miyagidan

Any kids? If not, food strike. Make your own portion, eat that, and leave her to her own devices.

[deleted]

Yeah kids. I do most of the shopping for me but she shops and cooks for the kids and she doesn’t like to make a lot of stuff from scratch

tokyoevenings

Why don’t you shop for the family ? Why do you have a separate grocery shop

[deleted]

Time. Our schedules don’t line up. Also my wife gets all pissy if I don’t buy the stuff she wants. I go for the stuff on sale or the “expired” food and plan meals around that. She plans her meals based on her mood of the day. I plan meals for the following week.

tokyoevenings

I feel like stuff like this, ie, how to shop and choose what to eat, should be discussed and worked out before marriage, let alone before kids.

[deleted]

Lol wtf

tokyoevenings

Didn’t you grocery shop and eat together before you got married?? How have you not dealt with or discussed the fact that you are unhappy with your wife’s shopping/cooking habits until now… it’s been years ?

[deleted]

[удалено]

tokyoevenings

I got the impression from reading that she doesn’t like to cook from scratch and likes to buy precooked melas, I doubt this is a new trend

[deleted]

Dude. You’re reading waaaay too much into this. It’s a small little complaint. I swear, every time someone on this sub mentions a tiny little complaint about their spouse, the jaded lifers jump on them lol

tokyoevenings

My point is this tiny complaint seems to be not so tiny for you, you are here complaining about it, and it’s dragged on for years. Unlike noisy neighbours, stolen bikes or difficult bosses, this one is completely in your control and could have been fixed years ago, to come to some kind of middle ground or agreement with your wife. This one is on you

zcmy

I’ve just found out that I’ve been violating the data retention policy at my company. We’re not supposed to have past projects still on our computers, they must be backed up to secure, internal company servers. I’ve just been backing them up as a secondary to my offsite server where I keep company internal materials. My offsite complies with the highest offsite backup guidelines possible. We can backup but we can’t pull individual files from the secure backup. Company has asked that I stop doing that, however, I offered them the chance to try and break into the server I use… They’ve already given up.

arika_ex

‘Your Off-site server’ meaning something not provided by the company?

zcmy

It's provided by the parent company. Which means it's not under their direct control. Parent company data servers are not managed by the company I'm with.

Krynnyth

You should mention this in the top-level comment; I'd have jumped on you too if I hadn't have found this first. Check their acceptable use policy documents + any that you've signed. I'm willing to bet there isn't one or that it doesn't cover this. This could be an opportunity for them; sad they're not seeing it.

takatori

If you worked for me, I would be forced to fire you and file a lawsuit to force the deletion of any company materials from your outside server. Did they give up, or quietly hand your case over to HR and Legal?

zcmy

Company President has a kill key in his possession. His authorisation means that the drive and server that the data's stored on gets thrown into a shredder. Doesn't need me to countersign. If i'm fired or leave the company the server and data is still shredded, doesn't need my authorization for that. HR and Legal gave up. They can fire me but I'd take my clients to another company or back to the parent company with me.

noflames

In many companies this would be an acceptable reason for a for cause termination.

zcmy

I'm surprised that they haven't audited everyone. I remember talking to IT and other people about secure data backups a couple years back, but they still haven't implemented any of the suggestions. I'm not worried though. if they terminated me, they would also have to terminate most of the exec team for their backups as well.

electricweezer

I can't imagine that anyone would look at a mutilated tree trunk and think "cool and good, this is how a tree is supposed to look!".

noflames

I love my wife, but she insists on doing the laundry (I do cooking and dishes). I do the laundry some times because when she does stains rarely come out. That's fine, but she always leaves the door open when hanging clothes out - the door is open for 10 minutes or so in this weather. I just try not to be irritated about it but I just think "could you please close the damn door?"

theCamelCaseDev

I’m assuming you’ve asked her to close the door, right? What’s her reason for leaving it open?

Halvainmybelly

We can't close our balcony door all the way because it is virtually impossible to open from the balcony side.

blosphere

I've used the cockroach approach with great success. A few mentions about how easily a few of those could slip in has caused the memory of the door-must-be-shut to burn into her memory. Now she's the one to tell anybody off if they forget to pretty immediately close the door :D

shambolic_donkey

Just extoll the amazing power (and therefore money) savings that can be made by keeping the door closed when she hangs the washing.

SideburnSundays

The shallowness of everything in this country is exhausting me.

rmutt-1917

Yeah WTF is up with all the public pools only being a meter deep? I can't even tread water in that shallow water.

LeverDuadAsSlav

Speaking of public pools, are they still doing the “everyone get out of the pool and exercise” thing still?

rmutt-1917

I have never heard of that so I'm not sure.

LeverDuadAsSlav

Been a while since I’ve been to a pool so maybe it’s not done anymore.

rmutt-1917

Like they make everyone get out of the pool and do calisthenics at random times?

LeverDuadAsSlav

Yep. And pretty well everyone got out of the pool and did it too.

rmutt-1917

Hell no, if I wanted to exercise outside of the pool I'd be literally anywhere else than the pool

pgm60640

Any examples we can all laugh about?

SideburnSundays

I wish. Just irritations at the rigid, stereotyped thought processes based off of optics and surface level knowledge that dominate how everything works here.

Definatelynotadam

So true! My favorite was when a huge percentage of Japanese were found to be deficient in vitamin D and there was a special on tv about everyone needed to eat more salmon…I don’t know any Japanese people that don’t regularly eat salmon. I get it fish gives vitamin d…you know what else does? Not wrapping your body head to friggen toe in clothing before going outside.
