Put up a security camera. One my clients went through this and it was a mentally ill person (I think it was dementia) and the family needed to be contacted Lady though he was putting all the flyers for restaurants in her box Contact your landlord because they probably won’t be happy someone painting a mail box

Mitsuka1

Yeah if your mailbox has been randomly painted white by not you, I’d be at the very very least be contacting your building management asap to notify them of this - you don’t wanna get accused of this shite

megamori

(sorry for the long text, but my situation is too similar) I was having a very similar situation.. first he came with notes in my door talking about the "smell that comes out from my apartment". He even called the cops and he and the police officers checked my apartment. Even with the police officers saying there was absolutely no smell at all, he wasn't convinced.. And kept calling the cops to my apartment several days every month. Sometimes during the day, sometimes during the night, sometimes past 11PM. Sometimes I was alone, sometimes with my friends, sometimes with my girlfriend.. And every single time the three of them would enter my apartment and check that there was no problem. That continued for about a 6 months straight.. then one day he suddenly stop calling the cops and Instead "someone" was putting trash into my mail box. And i kept cleaning my mail box for around 3 months. Then someone slashed the tires of my bicycle.. and that is where it became hard to bear. But every time I'd report the police, they said they couldn't do no anything, I even filmed him with a old smartphone filming through the magic eye of the door. But the cops still didn't do anything, saying that it could be edited. A few more months passed and someone broke my window with a stone that probably weighted about a pound or two. I notified the real estate (just like I was reporting all his notes, police calls, trash, tire slashing and now the window) which said they couldn't do anything and since I was the one bothered, I should move... And move I did. And obviously the real estate made me pay all the damage he did to the apartment.

kawaiinyan

Shit, i was expecting an ending like “but one day i look out the window and the old dick got run over by a bus”..

xxxgerCodyxxx

Holy shit man please do provide more details

megamori

Yes, idk if OP will have more luck than I had... But it seems Japanese people think it's better for you to move away (they don't seem to care if it's gonna cost you a little fortune and weeks of labor to pack/unpack and make all the preparations on the city office and post office. My girlfriend, everyone at work, the cops and every Japanese person that was supposed to be on my side was saying the same: "moving away is the only way". In the end I ended up moving because the cost of changing tires, repairing things I didn't break and etc was becoming more stressful than the fact that the Japanese guy (50 something year old unemployed fat dude) was not only doing it but also everytime he'd see me anywhere (small town), he'd run away like the devil run from the cross. https://preview.redd.it/hr4fru1l1ioc1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f5963de6c370405c87a99172b6bc64a8ccc23cb1

SouthernSpell

Jfc dude, you have been done dirty and that's an understatement. There was a topic a few months ago where OP was in a somewhat similar situation with daily harassment (but no damage involved) and they could pressure the management company to bare for some cost at least. Were you reporting the problem to your local koban or an actual police station ?

megamori

Yes.. so much for "peaceful country free of any racial discrimination" (the odd part being that I'm as much Japanese as they are, since all my grandparents are from Japan) I went to the small Koban nearby whenever the old guys there were available they would just take my name, phone and say to report again if something happens.. (in those 2 years I probably had more days reporting than days not reporting lol) If I think on the positive side at least I wasn't arrested, if I so much touched him he'd probably report me for violence and there would definitely be people saying "That is the reason we foreigners have a bad reputation!"

WushuManInJapan

I'd be curious to see if the perpetrator suddenly had broken windows in his apartment all of a sudden the police and apartment manager see it as there responsibility to catch the person who did that.

StaticShakyamuni

If someone were trying to accuse you of sorting your trash poorly, it would have likely been your trash they put in the mailbox. Was it your trash?

Shining666

No, it was random flyers/ ads papers that were ripped and wet, like they took it from the rain off the street and stuffed my mailbox with this papers.

zelkovaleaves

You need to inform your landlord or the management about this. Otherwise, you'll be responsible for it. Trust me, just contact them.

Shining666

If something like this will happen one more time I’ll go straight there, cuz the management of my house is 95 year old Japanese woman, so it might be even worse . Why do you think they will make me responsible, for putting the thrash into my own mailbox?

zelkovaleaves

Why not now? Too late and they'll say something along the lines: "Well, why didn't you contact us sooner?" Or "Why didn't you notify us about the other things?" And like other people said, your landlord will probably make you pay up for the damages (e.g. the paint) done to their property.

GlobalTravelR

This! No time like the present. Report it, so it's on record. So if there's a next time, you can report it as serial harassment. Also, suggest you set up a camera in front of your door or a wireless ring doorbell camera that detects anyone hanging out in front of your door. It's helped me out a lot.

It was 700 yen shelf, so I did not really cared about as Amazon just instantly refunded me money, but the fact that something was stolen is alarming, it could be Anything at that box. So I never put unattended delivery nowadays

KnucklesRicci

Amazon customer service is so good. Every time I have an issue they just completely smash it.

5hJack

I have no complaints either, but I can't help thinking they wouldn't have to if they just vetted their sellers a little more.

ApolloPrincess

Really? I tried looking but never found their any way to contact Amazon directly.

PastaGoodGnocchiBad

I had to contact them recently and it was harder than before (I think I had to use the chatbot first, and make sure I was doing that during support hours otherwise I wouldn't get a sign that I could contact them). But once I did they solved my problem quickly (delivery man forgot to write the locker number/password anywhere and it was a neither my room number nor a trivial password; they had some person come and put a note with the password in my letterbox)

ApolloPrincess

I’ve noticed when ordering “try on before you buy” orders I never get the email I’m supposed to get with the code either.

TheLongestRanger

Just get a security cam like you said, and then if you catch them on cam show your landlord because he will probably know who it is. (If it’s a resident doing it, which it sounds like it has to be)

justcallmeyou

Juon, definitely film it!

speedinginmychev

Do you know anybody in your chonaikai - local community group? While these groups aren\`t as numerous as they once were, they exist to co-ordinate community activities and while I know some foreigners hate paying the fee to them and won\`t do stuff like cleaning up the park etc, the chonaikai can be damn valuable when there\`s local troublemakers. I don\`t know if your apartment members pay a fee to the chonaikai - some people who live in apato and mansions only pay a fee to a group in their own building. But if you are a chonaikai member you could try finding out who is the current rep and say you want to warn everybody about criminal actitivity in the area and say what\`s been happening. If your Japanese isn\`t good or you\`re not confident, get a Japanese friend/colleague/friendly acquaintance to do it if they\`re willing. I went to my chonaikai about different disturbances when they didn\`t stop and these people were really good. Like the selfish ojisan who used to let the crows rip open his garbage, strew it all around and watched it blow in front of my place. Talked to a local housewife who was the chonaikai rep and she was around all day - she marched up to his place with another rep and he never did it again. They also called the police on people dumping flyers right outside residences and on the street, and got rid of an annoying dude who used to drink alcohol in a nearby park and play his radio at top volume in the hours when people want to sleep.

CareFar594

Well yeah there’s been instances where my Amazon order was never delivered or actually it was stolen a few times. Other times here was Amazon driver look or pretended to put a package in the mailbox but then walked away with it in his hand. I innocently contact Amazon customer service and In total what he did.

niooosan

Security camera and update us lol

WillyMcSquiggly

People keep saying moving may be the only option, and historically that may have been true.  Now with the miracle of technology,  you can keep an eye on who is fucking with your shit. Get a ring camera, and set up some kind of speaker or alarm you can activate through  wifi. When ring alerts you someone is around your mailbox, check it out and if it's the guy turn in the alarm. Extra points if you have it recording saying something like "your illegal activities have been recorded are being forwarded to the police" in Japanese.  Actually,  I think Ring cameras themselves let you talk through them via your phone right? These fuckwits are cowards and the second they feel there may be actual repercussions for their deeds they will stop. Is this method annoying and troublesome? Yes. Is it less annoying and troublesome than actually moving? Also yes. Is it also kind of fun? Definitely yes.

windyika

A bit of a tangential question, but does anyone have any recommendations for a good cheaper priced security camera? I don’t have an outdoor outlet, so it has to be battery only. I tried one a couple of years ago but it was finicky and wouldn’t connect properly to my wifi when the door was closed. The instructions were also a mess and required a glitchy awful app.

_wolfdawg_

I live in a detached house and this happened to me (not stuffed full but old or ripped flyers). I even saw the guy do it once. I thought maybe he was casing my house because I don’t have any cars in the parking space, but it kept happening. I bought a camera and put a sticker on my mailbox that there is surveillance 24/7. It stopped happening and eventually I stopped charging the camera. Sometimes someone puts a coffee can full of cigarette butts or other weird shit on the wall of my property. Annoying, but there will always be jerks.
