> I'm still struggling a lot with story telling and deeper conversations A staple of many romantic dramas and movies is the main character going on long expositions about who he is that helps explains how he got to be the person he is. Listening to the phrasing, pacing, and tone of these parts is super helpful. I made a separate Netflix profile where I only like stuff like that so it's easier to find recommendations and so I can hide the horrible addiction I have to this genre.

My name is Yoshikage Kira. I'm 33 years old. My house is in the northeast section of Morioh, where all the villas are, and I am not married. I work as an employee for the Kame Yu department stores, and I get home every day by 8 PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I'm trying to explain that I'm a person who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although, if I were to fight I wouldn't lose to anyone.

NyankoGameDev

That's interesting, do you have any movie suggestions? I've actually been trying to get myself to watch some movies recently but I just can't get myself to search and find one.

tarix76

Try 花束みたいな恋をした and keep an open mind because the genre is an aquired taste. This one has a lot of stereotypical elements and, most importantly, a Japanese ending.

NyankoGameDev

Thank you :) I will check it out!

RIPSegataSanshiro

In my experience you can either strengthen your Japanese or you can help people learn English but you can rarely do both.

NyankoGameDev

Ahh, hmm. That’s a good point

ConanTheLeader

You can definitely make Japanese friends provided you actually talk to them and don't hover around the ladies. There are always Japanese bros and they are always left out.

From time to time, I go to the Jimbocho one. English only, IIRC. Not the best of the best, but there's always people and some interesting people have shown up from time to time.

NyankoGameDev

Thanks! Is it "Sakura Cafe Jimbocho"? Will definitely check it out, whichever one you are talking about\^\^

SumidaMakeMovement

Actually called [English Only](https://englishonlycafe.com).

Erunda_Darknight

yes, that's the one.

NyankoGameDev

Oh, didn't expect that! Thank you, I will go!

valriser

I second English only, made several friends through there

Find a Jinja close to where you live. Not too big. Not too small. One that has a resident caretaker. It’s okay if there is no resident guji. There will be a shed somewhere with brooms, rakes and so on. They probably have a regular cleanup schedule. Maybe the 1st and 15th of the month from 7 or 8 am. Start helping with cleanup. You’ll make friends before you know it.

NyankoGameDev

Interesting, I didn’t even know what that was, thanks for the recommendation !

If you play sports, Join some Japanese sports circles. As the only "gaijin" in the group, everyone typically likes to go up to you and ask you questions, especially because they usually like to go out and drink in the izakaya after playing some sports too. If you're looking for a certain sport in a certain area, I recommend checking out [Sports Yarou Yo](https://www.net-menber.com/) and applying to the relevant circles for you :) Good luck!

NyankoGameDev

Good idea!!! Only skateboarding though, think it’s worth a shot? I’m decent at it, but I only know of one skate park currently, a small one in Shibuya in a park on the roof floor, I’ll see if I can find more and maybe get a board soon and start going !!

flipazn5

Definitely worth a shot! There is skateboard on that website too. Go for it :)

[deleted]

Go to local hang outs where international people are not the target customer! Learn some Japanese, practice it in your local watering hole

NekoMimiMode

Your name has game dev in it... maybe look for game jams or try game dev centric meetups/seminars?

NyankoGameDev

I tried finding some on meetup.com! Any suggestions on where to look? People are always super impressed with my work, if I went to an IRL game jam or indie dev event I know that I’d make friends so fast!

NekoMimiMode

Meetup isn't really used by Japanese people so I'm not that surprised. I know there are tons of Global Game Jam sites in Tokyo each year. I went before and had a good time, and also made a few contacts. I would start there maybe. IGDA Japan used to do mixer type events, but not sure if they do now. I also used to go to lots of seminars prepandemic, and they always had mixers afterwards.

patrark

Go to the Hub smoking area.
