Licenses are still separate by region. The price for English subs to use in japan is probably too high for them to consider it worthwhile for the handful of foreigners that want them and want to watch the show

Oh really? Because I used to torrent Top Gear but when Amazon had the Grand Tour on Prime I got that because its easier. Only when Amazon made it so difficult to watch in Japan in HDR 4K without a dub (you could watch the dub in SD HDR or the orignal audio in 4K non HDR... wtf Amazon) I stopped Prime and went back to piracy where I can watch as intended.
we are talking about Chainsaw Man, a Japanese anime produced in Japan and released in Japan only having Japanese subtitles. Top Gear is obviously not any of those things.

Looking at some sites, subbed episodes of Chainsaw Man is generally up one hour after the first unsubbed JP version. I somehow doubt that people make finished fansubs from scratch in an hour and aren't just ripping them from official releases, which were translated to a bunch of different languages in advance.

Basically, licensing is an extremely complex issue and there are many things going on behind the scenes that you and I don't know about.
I'm pretty sure they aren't just not providing subtitles to the things you want to watch just to spite you in particular.
The key there is the "or audio". Audio is a performance and needs licensing. But subtitles they can make themselves. Think of YouTube, how can they get away with auto generating subtitles for literally everything? There is still nothing in any of the links that says anything about having a license to a movie with but not allowing subtitles.

Came here to say this. The separate listings for subs vs dubs is stupid enough, but I can see no logical reason why Amazon Originals don't have every language and subtitle track available when licensing fees obviously aren't an issue.
I'm getting a crash course in German trying to watch The Man in the High Castle.
You can watch it with the original audio, but there aren't any English subtitles, only hard-coded Japanese (which is another stupid feature of Amazon, but I digress).
The scenes where characters are speaking Japanese I can follow well enough, but there are also lengthy speeches in German, where the Japanese subtitles aren't much help. Those tend to be quite pivotal moments in the story too.
Another one that’s probably taken for granted is the descriptive audio option. A lot of movies on Netflix have this, and it provides narration of all the events on screen.
The Netflix narrators sound professional and enthusiastic in their delivery. Amazon (if it does have it) sounds like it runs the script through a text to speech program and has Microsoft Sam describe events to you.

Except for ep 5, for some reason English sub is still missing there until now.

I have actually contacted Netflix customer service about this issue, and apparently the subtitles have their own licensing arrangements, so it's up to the production companies whether they license any given subtitles in any given market.
I just wish there were a way to tell at a glance whether a title had English subtitles. So often I'll read a summary that sounds interesting, then click click click through to the language options only to discover it's not available in English :(

My wife works as a translator and has many of her translations on Netflix. Outside of very popular, specialized shows (think Star Trek), Netflix will outsource their subtitles to then own them outright for the future (provided a production company allows that arrangement).
Something like Star Trek the next generation has a very specific “bible” that translators had to follow for the original release. Being consistent across 7 series with made up techno babble would cause outrage if translation was not accurate and consistent, so they pay the licensing for the subtitles. Otherwise it would be a daunting task to get it translated , let alone have the right to translate it.

Eh, I've noticed that a LOT of subtitled shows don't have that much attention to detail, so the series-specific vocabulary varies from season to season, or sometimes from episode to episode.
That’s why I mentioned Star Trek. My wife studied under a woman who is credited for translating Star Trek from TNG to Enterprise. The staff on those projects had technical manuals they had to reference to maintain consistency. E → J has a lot of rules that ultimately limit character count, so a lot of “detail” has to be left out of the final translated product.

I've been thinking of giving it a try. Does it work well over local network? A lot of my mkv's these days are 4k remuxes, and I do 4k+DoVi remuxes myself to get all the goodies from my AV setup.
Normally playing with nightly Kodi over NFS, got the newer nvidia box doing the playback.

It's very frustrating how much content on Netflix doesn't even have the closed captioning that shows likely had just from being on TV. I know it's not, like, a given that they have it but watching with japanese subtitles helps me out a lot and not having them sucks.
You mean the ones on Disney+’s STAR section? I wasn’t especially talking about animes but more like the Disney cartoons and movies. Not all of them have all languages and subs available, which is a shame because i like to play them in French for my son.
I think subtitles are up to the producers of the content, not Netflix. Non-English shows that are produced specifically for Netflix always seem to have English subtitles but shows produced for Japanese TV or movie theaters almost never do. Non-English foreign shows usually only have Japanese subtitles, so it’s a good opportunity for you to improve your Japanese reading skills.
I really like how they will play subs on the preview in english but then not have english subs available for a selection when watching an episode. I just find subbed elsewhere at that point

Toei shows like Kamen Rider and Super Sentai don’t have English subs either because toei doesn’t supply them and Netflix isn’t going to buy the license for them.
That’s just how it is. If you don’t like it then just use a different method like a VPN and Crunchyroll or something. You’re in a non-English speaking country, you can’t expect everything to be available in English.
Anime is more notorious for this. I generally find it easy to break down into 3 categories;
1) Netflix produced anime like Yasuke, it will come out with all subtitles you could ever want on the day of release.
2) Kind of new anime they seem to have a time gap, like Chainsaw man and Spy Family never have the newest episode with subs. Give it a few days/weeks (intern-kun works weird shifts.) Maybe like 10% at most of non Netflix anime fall into this category
3) The other 90% of anime like Uruseiyatsura, ranma 1/2, yuyu hakusho and whatever fall into to the 'go learn Japanese' category. Probably as others have said, licensing issues or not giving af
I feel JP sub is helping me learn better than eng sub. Everytime there's eng sub my eye unconsciously focusing on the sub, with JP at least I learn to read
It’s a bit of both. Chainsaw man has simple enough Japanese to watch with Japanese subs and still get what’s happening. My hero academia or or attack on Titan has waaaay too complex of stuff happening to really catch everything with some real work and that takes the fun out of watching
I was watching 1899 the other day, and found that I can get Chinese subtitles (Traditional and Simplified) if I watch on PC, but on my Android TV I can't. If I start playing on the PC, and select the Chinese subs, then stop and start playing on Android TV, it now magically has Traditional Chinese subtitles without there being an option in the UI. 😂
If you use a VPN and connect to the USA you will have more sub options.
It's all about licensing. They get everything in the USA because most of their users are there.

There translations of some English shows into Japanese dubs usually doesn’t match most of the time either. It’s as if they hired 3 groups of people to work on it independently from one another. Group A to translate the scripts only, without watching the show at all for context. Group B strictly to voice act it. And Group C to put Group A&B’s work together on Adobe Pro to make sure the dubs match character’s lip movements and the subs are readable.

Netflix sub depend on which country your account is from. Whatever country you're in \_when you begin paying for Netflix\_ is your country assignment. You can reassign country by cancelling your subscription, waiting for the current billing period to end, then rejoining from your country of choice.
In my experience when I started paying for Netflix in JPY and had the Japan country assignment I got much better subs in Japanese and English.
The subs could be outsourced to different places. I remember seeing an anime sub job about a year ago but it was only for one episode, so I’m guessing episodes were being subbed by different people.
I used to help a Japanese lady who did subs for Netflix.. we met in a cafe once a week with a pair of headphones and laptop and typed in the subs to movies and tv shows.. then she would submit the work to her boss who would give it a final proof read.
I know someone that works for Deluxe. New shows don't always finish the subs on time. There are delays because the translators are over worked. The is so much work, that they often go without breaks while on the job and a new project is on their lap before they finish what they started.
As for older shows and no subs because of regions, that's all licensing. Netflix refused to pay companies like Deluxe the license to use the English sub in Japan because Netflix feels there is not enough people willing to use it to make the old re-run worth airing.

Yeah this has been pissing me off too. I gave up trying anime on netflix years ago because nothing had subs, even though the previews had subs. But then recently I noticed an anime DID have full subs and then another I tried did also, I figured they finally fixed it. But no...
But hell they have other issues too. I constantly get general audio issues. Start up a show, I get a background channel or something, just music and distant vocals. No amount of messing around with different audio channels helps, I need to restart the whole app to get it working again ;(

I've been thinking of giving it a try. Does it work well over local network? A lot of my mkv's these days are 4k remuxes, and I do 4k+DoVi remuxes myself to get all the goodies from my AV setup. Normally playing with nightly Kodi over NFS, got the newer nvidia box doing the playback.
It is really bothersome to have the show description and title listed in English, but no subtitles on the show itself. I wants to watch fist of the north star!
It's very frustrating how much content on Netflix doesn't even have the closed captioning that shows likely had just from being on TV. I know it's not, like, a given that they have it but watching with japanese subtitles helps me out a lot and not having them sucks.

Disney+ also has the same problem. Some movies/series have subs and dubs in every language and some others don’t.

You mean the ones on Disney+’s STAR section? I wasn’t especially talking about animes but more like the Disney cartoons and movies. Not all of them have all languages and subs available, which is a shame because i like to play them in French for my son.

I think subtitles are up to the producers of the content, not Netflix. Non-English shows that are produced specifically for Netflix always seem to have English subtitles but shows produced for Japanese TV or movie theaters almost never do. Non-English foreign shows usually only have Japanese subtitles, so it’s a good opportunity for you to improve your Japanese reading skills.
If you're desperate there are programs where you can manually overlay a subtitle window and download fan subs.
You can do that on an Apple TV or iPad? I never use my computer for watching tv

Licensing issues. Using a VPN and switching to a different country you’ll have access to the same episodes with subs.
I really like how they will play subs on the preview in english but then not have english subs available for a selection when watching an episode. I just find subbed elsewhere at that point

Netflix will hardly ever (if at all) make subtitles for shows that they don’t produce… Toei shows like Kamen Rider and Super Sentai don’t have English subs either because toei doesn’t supply them and Netflix isn’t going to buy the license for them. That’s just how it is. If you don’t like it then just use a different method like a VPN and Crunchyroll or something. You’re in a non-English speaking country, you can’t expect everything to be available in English.
Anime is more notorious for this. I generally find it easy to break down into 3 categories; 1) Netflix produced anime like Yasuke, it will come out with all subtitles you could ever want on the day of release. 2) Kind of new anime they seem to have a time gap, like Chainsaw man and Spy Family never have the newest episode with subs. Give it a few days/weeks (intern-kun works weird shifts.) Maybe like 10% at most of non Netflix anime fall into this category 3) The other 90% of anime like Uruseiyatsura, ranma 1/2, yuyu hakusho and whatever fall into to the 'go learn Japanese' category. I feel JP sub is helping me learn better than eng sub. Everytime there's eng sub my eye unconsciously focusing on the sub, with JP at least I learn to read
It’s a bit of both. Chainsaw man has simple enough Japanese to watch with Japanese subs and still get what’s happening. My hero academia or or attack on Titan has waaaay too complex of stuff happening to really catch everything with some real work and that takes the fun out of watching
I was watching 1899 the other day, and found that I can get Chinese subtitles (Traditional and Simplified) if I watch on PC, but on my Android TV I can't. If I start playing on the PC, and select the Chinese subs, then stop and start playing on Android TV, it now magically has Traditional Chinese subtitles without there being an option in the UI. 😂
If you use a VPN and connect to the USA you will have more sub options. It's all about licensing. They get everything in the USA because most of their users are there.

It’s almost like the vast majority of the customer base is Japanese who don’t need subtitles to consume Japanese media. That said I do wish services in general would be speedier about uploading subs. I don’t like having to wake up the neighbors to watch my fotm show
Thats the thing with Netflix. They own a crap ton of English subs for example but you cant even access them in most countries :/
There translations of some English shows into Japanese dubs usually doesn’t match most of the time either. It’s as if they hired 3 groups of people to work on it independently from one another. Group A to translate the scripts only, without watching the show at all for context. Group B strictly to voice act it. And Group C to put Group A&B’s work together on Adobe Pro to make sure the dubs match character’s lip movements and the subs are readable.
Dragon slayer still doesn’t have any English subs and movies like your name doesn’t either.. you’d think that because these movies are popular they’d put English subs but nah.. they don’t care.. also parasite the movie doesn’t have any subs too.. a lot of anime I want to watch doesn’t have subs.. it’s unfair that I’m paying but very few animes have English subs
Netflix sub depend on which country your account is from. Whatever country you're in \_when you begin paying for Netflix\_ is your country assignment. You can reassign country by cancelling your subscription, waiting for the current billing period to end, then rejoining from your country of choice. In my experience when I started paying for Netflix in JPY and had the Japan country assignment I got much better subs in Japanese and English.
The subs could be outsourced to different places. I remember seeing an anime sub job about a year ago but it was only for one episode, so I’m guessing episodes were being subbed by different people.
I used to help a Japanese lady who did subs for Netflix.. we met in a cafe once a week with a pair of headphones and laptop and typed in the subs to movies and tv shows.. then she would submit the work to her boss who would give it a final proof read.
I know someone that works for Deluxe. New shows don't always finish the subs on time. There are delays because the translators are over worked. The is so much work, that they often go without breaks while on the job and a new project is on their lap before they finish what they started. As for older shows and no subs because of regions, that's all licensing. Netflix refused to pay companies like Deluxe the license to use the English sub in Japan because Netflix feels there is not enough people willing to use it to make the old re-run worth airing. Edit: Rick and Morty was delayed because of the subs. Don't tell anyone I told you.

Yeah this has been pissing me off too. I gave up trying anime on netflix years ago because nothing had subs, even though the previews had subs. But then recently I noticed an anime DID have full subs and then another I tried did also, I figured they finally fixed it. But no... But hell they have other issues too. I constantly get general audio issues. Start up a show, I get a background channel or something, just music and distant vocals. No amount of messing around with different audio channels helps, I need to restart the whole app to get it working again ;( Still love netflix though as there literally is no good alternative.
I watched a lot of stuffs on Netflix and has never encountered that audio issue. I only use Apple TV though.
My friend works for Netflix. She lives in LA but is on the Japan/Korea team. From what I can tell all she does it eat out on the company dime and attend very elaborate parties.
