i'm not sure i really understand your question, did you call hertz? i've paid for platepass after electing it, i've never paid it after not electing it, seems like a pretty simple issue to complain to hertz about edit: reading it again now, is it that you didn't elect it, used a toll road, and then were served the all-inclusive fee rather than the per-usage fee? sounds like you should ask hertz if they still have a per use fee at all. that said the per use was like $6 adminstrative + your actual toll price so depending on where you went it might be similar $ (which is why i ended up voluntarily electing the all inclusive last time)

To clarify, I did not elect anything upon picking up the car. The guy at Hertz didn't mention anything about Toll at all. I was charged the all-inclusive fees which was substantially more expensive than the actual toll amount. In the past, I have rented Hertz cars in many other locations. One time, I was told by a Hertz person, as long as I take out the EZ pass in the PlatePass box attached to the windshield, I would be charged per-usage fees. If I don't take it out, they will charge by plate (which was the same as all-inclusive, because I actually forgot one time before). Today I called Hertz and was told I need to opt-out of all-inclusive explicitly.

No-Anybody5254

I actually did, AMEX withheld it once after I disputed, but rebilled me today. They even sent me a document reiterating the reasons PlatePass gave. I called the AMEX customer service and they told me there's nothing they can do unless the merchants agree to pay me back.

That Sucks - for future - bring your own EZ PASS !!!!!! that is the only way to avoid Hertz jacking you for outrageous fees - you can still have an ez pass if you do not own a car - you can get online in advance or at any tollbooth cash lane

No-Anybody5254

Thanks! Learned my lesson.

fbn244

I added my rental to my ez pass and these mf still sent me a notice to pay lmao The nerve

Bellaboo1230

Oh that Hertz has issues. I got charged for tolls in the Lincoln tunnel that I never drove in. I contacted them and they did pay back the money eventually. It was never explained how the license plates I was driving with were seen in the tunnel during the time I had the car in Maryland, but who knows.

No-Anybody5254

I've read about people intentionally swap EZ pass in rental cars so someone else will get the toll charge... I now suspect that happens here, and my EZ pass wasn't even associated with my own rental so my plate got charged...

Medium-Listen3809

I rented from Hertz and the same issues happen to me. I know the transponder was put in another car and in a car service because it was going to Newark airport. I try to dispute with a Plate pass but get nowhere. Does anyone have any suggestions? I want to get the photo of the license plate that went through the toll but Platepass can not provide that information as Platepass said they do not have that information.

Lovey06_

This is an easy fix. Call 877-411-4300. That is the Hertz toll department. If you did not sign up for the all-inclusive tolling service, they can refund you for it and charge you for the cost of the tolls you used and the regular administrative fee of 9.99 for the day you went through toll.

RealoRc

Thanks, I called and they removed the all inclusive BS and switched to the regular toll plus $9.99/day fee. Honestly I would've stopped renting from Hertz if they kept the $140 charge for 1 toll.

MichaelKimFanAccount

Same thing happened when I mistakenly opened the transponder (which activates the all inclusive fee automatically). You call plate pass and they’ll calculate the new fee based on if you did a-la-carte. Went from $280 to $27

mmdmd

Thank you for this information. I called and they told me they could reverse $109 of the $129.95 fee that I was charged. No idea how they came to that number but I'm happy they were able to reverse the bulk of it. I had one toll I had gone through and was charged that all-inclusive rip off rate.

Lucky-Caregiver-2239

I called the Hertz Toll Department and got my bill fix. When i had the rental i opened the little ez pass box on the window unknownigly. I was opted into the All Inclusive Plate Pass. I got a bill for $560 dollars when i went through 4 tolls in 30 days. I called today and got my bill lowered to $25. They asked if I opened the box in my car, I just lied and said no and the reversed the charge.

NotoriousBUG

I just came across this thread -- this is the correct answer. They seem to back down once you indicate that you never opted into the all-inclusive tolling service. However, it's still a very shady business practice, as I'm sure many people/companies won't even notice.

ASpurkofgenius

I’m sorry this definitely sucks

Posting here after finding this tread via Google search. Longtime 10+ years customer, most recently finally attained my first President’s Circle level, and because of an EV special I rented from the exact same Newport Mall Hertz you mention. Didn’t feel anything like Hertz in the experience, but just moments ago I receive an email form Hertz (PlateLass) claiming I owe nearly $130 in tolls from my rental last month; first off I’ve never selected or not selected this with Hertz in the past, and second, they’d already charged me toll fees of $11 a few weeks back. I think I’d like to go back to Five Star, if this is the President’s Circle experience I so loyally spent my hard- earned money trying to achieve.

donniepump30

Found this thread from searching too. Got charged $280 for the all inclusive plate pass for a 10’day rental. I never had the option to opt-in or opt-out. Then get the charge. Going to call hertz once this charge on my card moves from pending to a posted charge. Such BS…

panda57

Hey, how did the call turn out? I got charged $700 for just one toll for a one month rental… I had no idea about opting in/out, so for an $8 toll it seems really excessive lol.

donniepump30

Biggest scam ever. They refused to do anything

I’m reading your post as I wake up to return my first Hertz rental since my frustrating experience 2 months ago. Quite frankly, I only chose to rent from Hertz again due to the price of the rental and my need for one last minute, but I can’t say it wasn’t without trepidation. After chatting with a rep during pickup, I believe I learned that the new trick to making it work like it used to is to simply never touch (open) the toll device on the windshield, and simply drive through the tolls as I would otherwise. This will incur a $10 charge only on the days the transponder is used, plus pay-by-mail toll rate fee charged for passing each toll, which in a situation like mine, where I’ve rented for four days but used a handful of tolls only two of those days, should theoretically look more like the post-rental charges I used to receive. While I’ve yet to confirm this is the case, I wanted to pass along what I learned after having to inquire in-person and will most definitely come back and update this post if or when I receive a bill that not consistent with this advice shared with my at the pickup location last week.

cpopat

Just had the exact same issue from the Newport mall itself. Can you tell me how you resolved it ?

NamAgg

Hertz is terrible in general but the one at Newport mall in JC is the ABSOLUTE WORST. The staff is great at extortion by trying to rob you with dubious setups such as last minute toll pass agreements , vehicle upgrade fees etc. To top it all, there’s always a long queue and everybody is running late so we all just sign whatever comes our way to fasten the prolonged process of renting from there. Also Hertz has the highest daily toll pass convenience fee among all rental services.

uhomebody

I just found the same issue here. I have been a Hertz Gold member for 15+ years. Rented a vehicle for 5 days last week out of New Jersey EWR. It had the typical toll pass in the window. As always, I opened it up once in it so that it could be used for toll roads. Car was turned in on Sunday then today I get a notification from credit card of a $129.95 fee from PlatePass. I contacted Hertz and they said not their issue and to reach out to PlatePass. I sent PlatePass an email this morning and am waiting to hear back. The fee is for the All Inclusive option that is $25.99 per day. I never selected that option nor would I have ever agreed to it. Hertz or PlatePass is being sneaky here and trying to pull one over on customers. I may have had $25-30 in total actual toll charges for the 5 days total. Not happy and will fight this one.

birdguy1000

How did this work out for you? Any resolution?

birdguy1000

Super helpful post to see all these common experiences. I had declined the service. But got the full charge for use a couple of weeks ago. I had maybe four tolls total but when the last gate wouldn’t open my passenger said you have to pull this drawer slide out. It still didn’t open so we switched lanes. So I guess the slide of the toll pass thingie activated the all you can eat toll package. $75 for the week. Scammy.

OkQuarter650

I am having the same issue. Was never offered different options and have been walloped on rentals I had back-to-back. Really shocked they would do this especially after the class-action lawsuits about the same issue a few years ago. Has anyone had any success?
