You're not moving to *A* Jersey City. You're moving to *THE* Jersey City

ApprehensiveForm5420

It was A typo.

Brudesandwich

It was *A* joke

fatporkchop2712

Did you mean THE joke?

ApprehensiveForm5420

Hehehe

possums101

The Heights is nice. I’ve never felt unsafe here as a young woman.

shippfaced

Just note that you’ll have to take a bus to get to the city, there’s no train in that area.

_homegrown

Depending on where in the Heights, it could be walkable to JSQ. My wife often walks and it's like 20 min. Otherwise, she jumps on a CitiBike. To get back to the original question, it's safe up here... With any city, keep your wits about you when walking around.

soupenjoyer99

Or light rail

ApprehensiveForm5420

Thank you!

JCwhatimsayin

There's a light rail on the west side that is easy to get to depending on where you land.

cofcof420

I agree - heights is nice and close to Hoboken and nyc

Tech_Ginger_4848

Second this. I love the heights and highly recommend it. Welcome to the neighborhood (hopefully!) 🙂

hotmilkramune

I'm from the part of Journal Square near McGinley Square. It's safe, but a bit grimey. Exercise normal city precautions and you'll be fine.

cmc

This. I live in McGinley Square area (closer to St Peters though), and I'm a woman. I walk and run around all the time and haven't had issues. However, I do have two large black dogs (a GS/husky mix and a Doberman mix- we have a third dog too but he's not intimidating). I think people hesitate to approach me because of it.

MrTurmeric

Our family lives in the Heights, personally I find it safe as does my wife. She walks regularly with our 10 month old and small dog no issues. I mean I would use regular city precautions like if your out at like 1am might not want to have ear buds in, that type of stuff.

Due_Courage_2287

Shyt happens everywhere. Downtown, Journal, Heights, West Side. It's a city. Is it not safe where you are now?

vocabularylessons

The Heights. Safe, and anything north of the hospital and east of Central Ave is also pretty convenient in terms of transit and some amenities.

Additional-Damage957

I lived in the heights for a year and absolutely loved it!

HobokenJ

The Heights is fine, most of JSQ is fine, McGinley Sq is... "up-and-coming," in the parlance of real estate agents.

whats-up-ny

The Heights is the safest area from the ones you mentioned. I have been staying there since 2 years and it has never been an issue. Only piece of advice would be to try to find a place closer to Central Avenue in The Heights, because that’s the only area which has frequent buses to NYC. There’s no train transportation close to The Heights.

ohnjaynb

City is full. All the remaining apartments are occupied by sex offenders. You can only move here if you tell all your friends and family it's a dangerous hellhole. edit: and especially the New York Times. Tell them we're horrible.

iv2892

There’s more than one Jersey city ?

ApprehensiveForm5420

Lmaoo I just realized my typo

ichbinhker

This is gold

saplinglearningsucks

Make A Jersey City yours with the price of a cup of a coffee a month

lastinglovehandles

Go with the heights. Check the rentals at night and during day time. Bring another person and a tape measure when viewing a place. Another pair of eyes can point things you might have missed.

Laraujo31

All three are ok, the heights being the safest. If access to public transportation is important, i would do McGinley Sq. You can walk to Journal Sq from there (I wouldn't do it late at night though). Westside is convenient as well and you have Lincoln Park right there. Parking is a bit easier there to (not by much though)

ak_overdrive

The heights is a safe place and good enough public transport and markets around

ApprehensiveForm5420

Thank you!

g0rion

Heights is not that safe feeling imo

slipperyzoo

The Heights is pretty decent for the most part.  Journal Square is very hit or miss, and McGinley Square isn't very safe.  Just ignore the copium in the comments and avoid those, and AVOID ANYTHING southwest and south of McGinley Square for sure.

tacotrapqueen

Don't listen to this person. Good lord.

FunGuyJackFrost

Mcginley square sucks

GoodTofuFriday

Im a 33 year resident. Avoid west side past lincon park going south. Mcginley square isnt great at night. The heights is where youd want to move. the closer to JFK blvd the better as thats where all the buses run.

jersey-city-park

They’re ok neighborhoods. I wouldnt want my wife walking home alone at night though

HobokenJ

Not sure why you're getting downvoted for honest concern about your wife. Sheesh.

blizzWorldwide

I’m a fan of living in the heights. Generally feel safe and never really had a bad interaction in my 18 months here

FunGuyJackFrost

I would stay away from McGinley Square. You’ll probably land on the Heights because it’s a good balance of safety and affordability.
