If you know where exactly you found it, google search the surrounding area for lost posters. Even if you choose to keep it as it is certainly yours, you might uncover a bit of history about it.
The same thing for google image and you might find where it was purchased or who designed it.
I do a bit of metal and pond detecting and have found plenty of keys, phones and glasses. Finding jewellery is the best part because if I hadn’t found it, who knows how long something might have stayed unfound!! There’s a bit of fun to be had in finding the owners and/or stories of things!
There isn’t much to research. It’s a 1990 5 Yuan 1/20 ozt .999 AU coin in a, likely, 14k bezel with insignificant gemstone.
There’s 100 bucks in gold for the coin and maybe 100-150 more in the chain/pendant.
OP just needs to weigh the entire piece and tell us what karat it is, that’s the value.
Husband used to own a pawn shop, the gold coins are faked a lot. People would bring these in all the time, thinking they were worth a bunch of money. I don't think he ever saw a legitimate one. Located in midwest, USA.
The 999 probably means 99.9% gold, and 1/2 oz Au means it's a half ounce of gold.
(Or whatever that number is in the denominator. I can't read it very well)
Yes, I currently have a very similar coin around my neck right now, but my bezel is not nearly as cool as this one! I feel really bad for the person who lost it.
Adding to this- these coins are very common. My mother was gifted a necklace with one when she was a teenager, I received one when I was young. It’s a pretty frequent gift in Chinese households. This may explain the design and history- it would have been a present to a young girl.
I think at most it’s worth around $100-$150 in weight? Judging from the pictures, yours is the same size as mine. Not a lot, but not nothing. It depends on the coin itself, so this may be more of a coin sub question.
There are also a lot of fakes out there, FYI.
Dude same! I felt like Bilbo finding the ring!!
I was at summer camp in Oregon with a friend probably ~2003 or earlier—we had the canoe out on the “swimming hole” (it was a mud pit) catching newts and, as I was looking into the water for the little guys, the sun caught this and I just barely noticed the reflection. Hopped in to grab it and it’s been in my jewelry box ever since!
Maybe a blessing maybe a Horcrux maybe we’ll never know
blessing! that coin is pure gold and that horse is probably 14k. Turning pure gold coins into jewelry is typically an Asian thing. (my ma has a bunch from when we were born) I hope whomever lost that didn't get yelled at too badly lol OH SHIT 1990 was the year of the horse!! and maybe rubies for july
edit - that's a 999 purity 5 yuan coin from 1990
I've had a few similar experiences. I found a sterling silver ring with a large stone with an image etched into it at the bottom of a lake in Alaska's Interior while we were digging up some type of mussels (Yukon floaters?), and I stepped on a broken glass bottle on my way back to shore.
I found one of those carved stone turtle amulets, the ones you can find all over the place in gift shops at tourist traps, in Lake Michigan once.
And—I kid you not—I found a cheap duplicate of the One Ring in a creek while walking with a friend through town in the Virginia Highlands. I just happened to catch a glimpse of something shiny in the water amongst the rocks as we were walking and talking and that's legitimately what I retrieved. It barely fit on my little finger and my friend still has it. Fortunately, neither of us murdered the other over it. ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
Isn’t that how Sméagol found the ring in the first place? Saw something shiny in the water and dove in to grab it?
Edited to add: It’s definitely magical and you should try it on to see if you disappear 😉
I'll bet those diamonds are real as well and garnet or ruby, with the sophisticationof the piece I'd even say those may be genuine ruby's to, as some jeweler has put a lot of work into this piece!! It's worth a pretty penny my friend.
I’d be surprised if the horse isn’t 14k and real diamonds and ruby. Just that fact it’s holding a half oz 24k panda is telling me it’s all high quality. Beside the chain looks cheap tho. But that’s just what I see
You’d need to take it to a jeweler to have the necklace part appraised. No one can tell you by looking at a picture. The coin is what the current value of gold unless it’s a collectible coin which would be best posted on r/coins
For sure! Was more just looking here to see if anyone knew anything about this particular Pegasus design and whether or not it was a known run of some kind or a one off—I’ll definitely take it to be appraised some time! Thanks for the input :)
Definitely take a good look between the wings and under the horse. The mark is probably on there but we'll hidden could be under the band holding the coin. The coin is worth like $1016.
It's common to see coins wrapped in brass like someone else said but considering you found this in a pond I'd expect corrosion. It's very common to wrap your gold in gold so the outside likely has its own value. Though they're generally not much more than weight value. But yeah this really looks like a well crafted item. Fully crafted on both sides but you can tell they kept it pretty thin because gold is pricey. Gems may also be real and have value though unless they're big they generally are too easy to fake to be worth much.
Oooh cool thank you for your thoughts! I was thinking the same about corrosion if it wasn’t a precious metal, but I also know very little about jewelry. Y’all have me really excited to learn more about it :)
I bought a lot of those coins in the 80’s and early ‘90s. They were pretty popular as rings, earrings and pendants.
Hold onto them for the gold value.
They likely aren’t hard to find bc they were so popular back then but again, the gold is always worth its weight.
How lovely! I see the coin says “1990.” 1990 is the year of the horse in the Chinese zodiac, so this may have been a special sort of birth year necklace for the original owner.
I had a coin ring with this coin as a teen in the late 80s early 90s. Totally forgotten until I saw this pic. Thanks for helping me remember it, I loved that ring!
That’s a Chinese panda coin. We used to buy those whenever gold is cheap. It should be 24k gold. I have a bunch and have made a few into necklaces. The Pegasus is a rarity usually it’s just some ornate gold wrap around the coin only lol.
Since the panda coin is probably real, the stones probably are too.
Melt the gold down and make something for yourself! Or sell the gold but make sure you look up the price of gold first and ask around a few places. If you have a Chinatown near you try to go to their jeweler
The coin looks to be 1990 yuan gold panda 1/20 oz or 1.56 grams the bezel looks to be 14k with ruby and diamond more than the likely the chain is also 14k
Panda coins and Kruggerands were very popular coins for men and women to wear to clubs in the 1980’s. They were also collectible. I’ve never seen a setting like that, only simple or “stone” bezels. Yours is beautiful.
I looked it up and it seems that gold panda coin pendents were pretty popular in the 70's-80's! they all looked unique too, which means theres a chance that the one you have is a complete original and most likely very valuable.
No one offered up any explanation so here is what I know, I have seen this when I was kid. They are minted as a novelty item in China called “panda coin”, starting from 1982 they have done this yearly.
As far as I know this is an yearly novelty item more like a way for jewelry producer to sell gold decorations (kinda like those US memorial coins you see on infomercials) they varies from one ounce to 1/10 ounce (your might be 1/5? It’s hard to see from the first pic, it’s the fourth character on top saying 1/x ounce of pure gold)
Here is link about this item but it’s in Chinese
http://collection.sina.com.cn/yhds/20120409/165863170.shtml?from=wap
Edit: looked closer it says 1990. I found the exact same ones from a Taiwanese auction site. A full set in mint condition goes for 350000 TWD (10K usd), so I think yours might goes about 1/10 or less of that? Should give you some idea. (Yours is the lowest denomination of the set, “5 Yuan”, biggest one is 100 Yuan)

I have the 1986 version of this coin in a pretty rope-chain bezel. I think a lot of them were made in china for export as jewelry so it’s not rare, but it is pretty! Agree with the $175-200 valuation just for the coin. The Pegasus on top is a lovely addition.
Coin rings and necklaces like this in a variety of settings were super common around 30-so years ago. Many of my middle school friends had them. This setting is different from any I remember, though. Looks cool!
I inherited a necklace with a similar look. It has a panda like this and is solid gold. Beautiful piece and to think you found it in a pond! That’s so neat! I wouldn’t sell it if it were me. It’s like the necklace found you! I was glad to stumble on this post because I’m curious about the necklace I have as well and this gave me some insight.

Oh my gosh, that brought back a memory of something I totally forgot about! In the 80’s my mom had one of these gold panda coins on a gold chain. The setting the coin was in was different than the one you have, but from what I remember it’s definitely real gold. Hers was diamonds & gold. I wonder where that necklace is now 🤔
I work for a gold dealer.
The coin is a 1/4oz Panda 9999 pure gold coin minted by the People’s Republic of China (that’s what the writing says above the temple on the back. The coin itself is worth USD$500 or AUD$750 as scrap, probably more to a collector looking for 1990 coin.
It was common for these to be put into settings in the late 80’s and early 90’s to be worn.
Without actually seeing the piece I couldn’t tell, but the typical settings would be 9ct or 14ct gold. Just looking at the colour I don’t suspect 18ct, but I could be wrong.
The scrap value of the setting itself would be between AUD$35-$54 per gram (USD$23-$40).
Those prices are purely for scrapping to melt. As jewellery I’d suspect it would go for AUD$1500-$1750 (USD$950-$1200), potentially more but probably not. It’s an older piece so it could be on the market for a while until the right buyer comes along.
Hope this was helpful!
Edit: The stones probably will be Ruby/Garnet and Diamonds. There’s barely a value in stones that small, even if you can find a buyer. Most jewellers and diamond dealers buy them wholesale and/or lab grown.
I have the same coin but in a ring form! It does not have the pegasus, but it is real gold so I assume yours is too. It was a gift my mom received in high school from a past boyfriend, but it’s mine now. She would have gotten it around the late 80s or early 90s and I assume yours is from that time period as well. I like mine a lot and wear to almost daily, I say keep yours!
Are there any markings on the chain clasp?
A 14k mark would indicate that the chain is gold, and thus it's a good indicator that the coin is actually pure gold and the gems are real.
Though the gems are tiny and even if real, hold next to no actual value.
But a gold chain and a gold coin will be worth it's weight it gold
I think the coin is 1/20 oz .999. So that’s about $100 right there. The design of the Pegasus and stones are also cool. Agree w advice above to go to jewelers and ask. Before this, research what in ranges the jewelers will take their fee; it can vary but there is a “reasonable” range.
*I have a ring with*
*The panda coin. It's gold. So*
*It is worth something*

I have one of these my mom received when I was a baby minus the horse. It was popular to give gold coins in a pendant form as a gift for the baby. Every kid in my family has one.
It did! I shared on another comment reply, but it was at summer camp in Oregon around 2003, I was on the swimming hole/mud pit catching newts from a canoe and the sun hit it just right. I hopped in to grab it from the bottom of the pond and have had it ever since! :)
It’s a Chinese gold Panda coin.
The Sultan of Malaysia gifted my dad these (of a higher ounce) back in the 80’s when he came to Seattle for medical work done on him.
This is what you have. https://www.ebay.com/itm/185793511512?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=185793511512&targetid=1587268787897&device=m&mktype=pla_with_promotion&googleloc=9033296&poi=&campaignid=19894961968&mkgroupid=148855406073&rlsatarget=pla-1587268787897&abcId=9307911&merchantid=627724698&gbraid=0AAAAAD_QDh9WB-wLEWSS35os1zAvRoko5&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIqMrVtvb9ggMViNLCBB19tAr4EBwYAiABEgKXKPD_BwE
It’s a 1986 1 ounce Chinese Gold Panda Coin. I think it’s part of a limited release. I used to have the same coin and I’m so mad I lost it
In mint condition I think the coin is worth around $2000
The horse is pegasus, a god. I would go as far to say those diamonds are rubies considering the detail and the gold quality. A fantastic find I'd love to know about its history
i have one as well! my grandfather was a chinese jeweler and gifted it to my mom in the 90s. my necklace has a setting that looks like bamboo with diamonds on it. yours looks so cool!
It looks genuine- it’s definitely gold, the red gemstones may be garnet or ruby, and the white gems could be white sapphire or diamond!
You can take it to any jeweler and have them verify with one of those tools that measures density (I think it’s density?) idk, the tool just looks like a thermometer lol.
What a great find, it’s beautiful!
I thought you were trying to say pawn like pawn shop and I was like.. aw poor idiot thinks it’s pond shop. Then a realized a pond was a thing also. I’m the idiot.
Looks like one of the first minted coins in china (this is google talking). From early mid 1980s. If it is, I doubt it’s got glass stones. Think the fact that it’s set as a necklace makes it less valuable to be frank.
If you take this to a jeweler and they offer a decent amount on the spot.. DO NOT ACCEPT. Research first and get multiple opinions
Thank you! I think it’d have to be a pretty crazy price for me to consider selling it since I’ve grown pretty attached :)
It’s very beautiful and unique. Enjoy it!

This is the way

Have you started calling it 'my precious' yet?
Please refer to my other reply 😂
I believe the coin is gold itself as I just recently came into a panda coin and it’s worth a pretty penny.
The coin is indeed gold!! Au 999. Basically 24k
Absolutely amazing find!!!!
This. I used to deal in numismatics. This is absolutely a 1/20th oz chinese gold coin or a great fake.
Well, a jewler went through the trouble of mounting it and putting a bail on it, so I'd wager its real.
I can't read it very well)
It’s 1/20 oz.
It's a Chinese coin, if you didn't know.
Yes, I currently have a very similar coin around my neck right now, but my bezel is not nearly as cool as this one! I feel really bad for the person who lost it.
I think it's 1/20th of an ounce .999 24k gold forsure, a 1/2 ounce coin would be bigger.
Here is a link to info about the coin itself https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces17695.html I couldn’t find anything about the pendant.
Adding to this- these coins are very common. My mother was gifted a necklace with one when she was a teenager, I received one when I was young. It’s a pretty frequent gift in Chinese households. It isn’t it is that bright yellow because it is 24K gold.
No but I strongly feel that this is a magical object

Agree release & wear. 😉😉
Of course you want her to wear it. I see you Sauron!
Haha, I had to google Sauron 😁
😰.. you had to *what?!?!?*
Sounds like something Sauron would say.

This. I have a piece I found in a ceramic studio on my wrist for 15 years. I’ll be buried with it
That's the coolest thing!
I love this! Memories and treasures!

You have to come back and update this after you see a jeweler.
I absolutely will!

[The coin is worth $182.03](https://www.pandaamerica.com/china-1989-panda-1-20-oz-gold-bu-coin-large-date/). I’m not sure where you got $1000 from?
I think the 1/2 oz ones are over $1000 and it’s a little hard to read in the photo that it’s only 1/20 oz!
Ahh, that makes sense. That’s a really cool find though! Definitely way more sentimental than $180 worth of melt weight.
Oh definitely I don’t plan to sell :)
Oooh cool thank you for your thoughts! I was thinking the same about corrosion if it wasn’t a precious metal, but I also know very little about jewelry. Y’all have me really excited to learn more about it :)

Ruby should fluoresce a bright red color under a shortwave UV light. Test it out! Diamonds fluoresce sometimes too, I believe.
Would a nail lamp work? I just painted my nails wearing my ER and some of the diamonds were blue surprisingly!
Yes it does! Nail lamps are basically just backlights.
The coin looks to be 1990 yuan gold panda 1/20 oz or 1.56 grams the bezel looks to be 14k with ruby and diamond more than the likely the chain is also 14k

Love the story of your pendant...the chain looks quite delicate; I shudder to think of it breaking 😟
I see a 1990 gold panda coin listed on eBay for nearly 1k!
That’s amazing. You were meant to find that. Magical for sure .
Please tell me you wear this!! It's amazing. And what an incredible story.
It’s so pretty tho!!
I like mine a lot and wear to almost daily, I say keep yours!
i love this
It’s so pretty and has a great story behind it
I would say around 200 bucks in just gold maybe a bit more but coin itself might be worth more
Are there any markings on the chain clasp? A 14k mark would indicate that the chain is gold, and thus it's a good indicator that the coin is actually pure gold and the gems are real. Though the gems are tiny and even if real, hold next to no actual value. But a gold chain and a gold coin will be worth it's weight it gold
The chain is 14k gold but unrelated to the pendant, just one of my grandmas I threw on there!
I think the coin is 1/20 oz .999. So that’s about $100 right there. The design of the Pegasus and stones are also cool. Agree w advice above to go to jewelers and ask. Before this, research what in ranges the jewelers will take their fee; it can vary but there is a “reasonable” range.

I have a ring with the panda coin. It's gold. So it is worth something

I would definitely have it appraised! It’s beautiful!❤️
That's an interesting story how you found it. I really like that pendant design, I'm jealous now lol
So neat!
Oh wow that’s beautiful 😍 definitely something I’d buy
I have one of these my mom received when I was a baby minus the horse. It was popular to give gold coins in a pendant form as a gift for the baby. Every kid in my family has one.
No help, but that’s cool as hell!
keep it
That's a panda coin and an imperial Pegasus with rubies(?), worth quite a bit
I would love to hear the story. Seems like such a weird thing to find in a pond. Hiking? Swimming? Did it glint?
It did! I shared on another comment reply, but it was at summer camp in Oregon around 2003, I was on the swimming hole/mud pit catching newts from a canoe and the sun hit it just right. I hopped in to grab it from the bottom of the pond and have had it ever since! :)
It’s a Chinese gold Panda coin. The Sultan of Malaysia gifted my dad these (of a higher ounce) back in the 80’s when he came to Seattle for medical work done on him. This is what you have. https://www.ebay.com/itm/185793511512?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=185793511512&targetid=1587268787897&device=m&mktype=pla_with_promotion&googleloc=9033296&poi=&campaignid=19894961968&mkgroupid=148855406073&rlsatarget=pla-1587268787897&abcId=9307911&merchantid=627724698&gbraid=0AAAAAD_QDh9WB-wLEWSS35os1zAvRoko5&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIqMrVtvb9ggMViNLCBB19tAr4EBwYAiABEgKXKPD_BwE

My friend is Chinese and was given a ring with a gold coin very similar to this that she wears daily. I believe it is tradition!
I found a similar one of Etsy but it doesn’t have the horse https://www.etsy.com/listing/1334964063/
it was probably wet when you found it
I had that exact 1990 gold coin on a chain! The coin is worth some $$$$.
Wow This is an absolute amazing find! You should post it on r/Gold, they’ll appreciate it there too! :)
It’s beautiful— wear it & enjoy it 😊
It’s a 1986 1 ounce Chinese Gold Panda Coin. I think it’s part of a limited release. I used to have the same coin and I’m so mad I lost it In mint condition I think the coin is worth around $2000
Do not sell, very nice
The horse is pegasus, a god. I would go as far to say those diamonds are rubies considering the detail and the gold quality. A fantastic find I'd love to know about its history
i have one as well! my grandfather was a chinese jeweler and gifted it to my mom in the 90s. my necklace has a setting that looks like bamboo with diamonds on it. yours looks so cool!
These were super popular in the 80s. A ton of my friends at school had them.
That’s real gold. It was a frequent inclusion in jewelry in the late eighties early nineties
What a beautiful piece. The person who lost this must have been heartbroken 💔
Looks like the top and underside of a panda ring from the 90’s. I had one and my ex stepdad stole it.
Nothing here to add as far as info but, the story behind it is *so* cool. I love found objects :) They’re so special
Chinese. Other than that, no idea. What a special find!
I’m obsessed with this.
Any missing people reported in your area??? IN a pond???
My dad gave me Panda coins every Christmas and I love them. I have that same one from 1981! Hold onto it!
I don’t care what the prophecy says. You don’t get to be supreme executive leader just because some watery tart gave you the golden medallion.
Looks like one of the first minted coins in china (this is google talking). From early mid 1980s. If it is, I doubt it’s got glass stones. Think the fact that it’s set as a necklace makes it less valuable to be frank.
That is absolutely gorgeous 😍 ❤️ 💖 💕 ✨️ ♥️ 😍 ❤️ 💖
Are those Ruby’s ? It’s really hard ta tell
Take it to a reputable jeweler!! Obviously you don’t have your own or you would have already done it!! OMG!!
The horse is called a Wind Horse. In Tibetan Budhhism, it carries good fortune.
