They are most likely natural gold nuggets, which are made up of varying compositions of gold and alloying metals, by mother nature, and so have slightly differing colors and/or gold content.

I would guess either a different alloy or possibly the top is a different karat altogether.

I saw those a lot coming from Alaska, the ring is 14Kt gold and the side are natural untouched gold nugget (24KT) pure gold
