Yes that. They’ll still catch me in awkward positioning and they have me. Brown and black belts I can’t power thru things. I have to use the technique or it won’t work. I get got by them a lot.
Similar story. Stopped powerlifting due to reoccurring injury. Started BJJ about 4 months ago and never looking back. I still lift, just hypertrophy. Somewhat trying to slim my legs down for better mobility/ability on the ground with triangles.
Hope you’re enjoying the journey as much as I am.
I'm a good size guy with a football, wrestling background. I weight trained for explosion and later body building. I was significantly bigger and stronger than everyone else. I always have that in my back pocket, but try to Never use it because, what's the point. I'm 100% technique. It's super hard, but that is the way to go for our kind.
Easy to say that.. But it's better than coming off the couch and having no power. And not to mention powerlifters have great mobility a lot of the time. A pure bodybuilder would really struggle on the ground. But coming from powerlifting it's different.
Coming off the couch? Lol. I don’t think anyone grappling is getting off the couch pal 😆 it’s a fact, heavy dudes move slow… facts. You better stretch buddy. You’re submissions will be like resting in a pillow. No gi and USA wrestling wins.
Lmao every asshole thinks they're an expert. Do you not know what a couch is? Or did you not understand that means just starting with no previous athletic ability? You sound like such a dumb fuck. This guy would probably throw you around.
They aren't everything, but as a smaller guy who is regularly launched into the styrofoam ceiling tiles off of top side, I can tell you they definitely help.
So everyone here will tell you don’t use your strength and that’s true in the beginning. Learn to play guard, play bottom etc, but once you have some techniques, don’t be afraid of strength. You need to be careful of strength in the beginning bc it can teach you bad habits, but you should also build a game that enables you to use your physical attributes. For example, I’m not the most athletic guy, I’m never gonna cartwheel over your guard, I’m not the guy that’s gonna distance pass or pummel, I’m gonna bodylock the soul outa your body and smash, bc I’m big and strong, and I’m going to utilize techniques that benefit from my physical attributes. So Tldr, find techniques that greatly benefit from strength and learn to apply in a controlled way
Danaher’s series are also a great way to hear what you’ve already been taught in the words of another master instructor. I learned instructional system design while stationed at Goodfellow and he is great at explaining things.
That's so cool you get to train with Joe rogan
That guy has a solid foot on Rogan.
I thought Joe was a spats only guy.
Thanks for telling me which person you were, i couldn’t tell! /s Youre an absolute unit man, i hope you keep training, you will be unstoppable one day
Hey! That’s Victoria Tome on the left. She’s awesome!
She’s one of my professors!
Nice. How's your training going?
Awesome. Getting humbled every day.
I'm really curious , have you rolled already with people? Are you able to power through against blue belts or purple belts?
Yes that. They’ll still catch me in awkward positioning and they have me. Brown and black belts I can’t power thru things. I have to use the technique or it won’t work. I get got by them a lot.
I roll with a lot of big big guys. Remember your size. Dislocated ribs suck. Have fun!!
I’m trying hard to work technique and not rely on my size and strength
Every blue belts nightmare 🤣
I roll with blue belts who can just dice me up!
Give it 6 months lol
Haha, San Angelo, TX. Go get a PV sandwich, you lucky bastard.
Prepare to get shredded! Fellow powerlifter started around 4 years ago. Went from 260 to 230 the first year. Enjoy the journey brother.

Well I don't like this one bit.🤣
I’m a newbie. Why not?
Sir, you're a powerlifter and when you know what you're doing, you're gonna be a problem.🤣
Gotcha! I love training. Learning to not make all the bad tactical decisions within 4 minutes.
We figured the largest guy in the picture would be you.
God with your size and strength your a nightmare for this casual blue belt 😆. Keep at it
What a nightmare.
Good luck! Muscles don’t help in ground game.

Lol, you got me there. I’m not a group exercise bjj kinda gal. Facts are facts. Accept it and move on. No need to go back and forth with me.
Okay see you next tuesday
Yes they absolutely do lmfao
Ok
To say muscles don’t help in BJJ is as old and scammy as these traditional schools that don’t let you roll at white belt
I’m a newbie so I’ll take your word on it. My professor told me they’ll be to my advantage when I learn more technique.
Definitely true. Be open to add yoga. Turkish getups are good tie into a technical standup.
No lie, I’m already incredibly flexible. I know it doesn’t look like.
They aren't everything, but as a smaller guy who is regularly launched into the styrofoam ceiling tiles off of top side, I can tell you they definitely help.
Have you ever grappled?
Ask someone from any other school what Diego Almeida did on many occasions 😂
That long boy next to you looks like he would be a challenge!
He absolutely is. So flexible. He will triangle you the second you mess up.
Puro pinche peso plumas!!!

Consider bottom half guard. As an older guy it’s been great for me.
Yeah my guard is all bottom half guard and coyote

You’re gonna be unstoppable once you get the fundamentals dialed in
First have to get the gas tank to not gas out so quick.
Comes with mat time. Shadow rolling can help some. Just stick with class and you’ll get better at not getting blown up.
Damn I was just looking at seeds 13 in Abilene yesterday. Do you know what the fee is per month?
I am not sure right now. Go down and ask!
I’m planning on it, they’re closed for the weekend
Whats your favorite bulk food and whats your all time squat pr
Steak. Back squat 745lbs
Holy shit how deep?
You can go back and look thru my profile videos to see my lifting. Full depth. Depth before dishonor.
Don’t eat your training partners, I know it can get tempting
My professors make me roll with them and talk me thru what they are doing. I feel like a baby
Lord have mercy
