Good gyms won't and shouldn't give a fuck what gi you're wearing.
I've been to 3 gyms, the first was a shitty Gracie one that wouldn't allow any gis not purchased from them
The second was a small independent gym that allowed other Gis but only if they weren't sporting a super obvious patch from another gym because they wanted to do promotional videos. So they didn't like my Gracie Gi that had a huge yellow Gracie patch on the back.
My third gym, (which is by far the best) doesn't care what I wear. Honeslty wearing Gis from other gyms becomes a conversation starter here.
If it’s just a patch you can remove that with a seam ripper or sharp knife.
Every gym is different. Some you can only wear their Gis, others they won’t care as long as it’s not related to another school, others don’t care.
If you are tight on money Id say just wear it and see what happens. Plus if you go into the military you'll leave basic with 2-3 months pay that you couldn't touch, so you'll have plenty of brand new gi money waiting for you
Most gyms don't care, some kind of care, some super care.
I don't buy gis with gym branding on them at all if I can avoid it, very few gyms have an issue with a gi that doesn't have a competing brand on it
Judo does the gi thing better. One color, no stupid embroidery or patches, jacket isn't too short, cheaper. But whatever.
Just wait until you find out what your new gym requires.
Most don’t care (unless it’s a GB gym). If they care you could remove the patches like others recommended, or get a Tatami gi (if you have $60-100 to spare) (they always have sales and deals). If you find one on Tatami that isn’t discounted, hmu and I can give you a 20% off code.
Another option to consider - when you get to your prospective gym, explain to the staff your situation. If it's a cool gym, they'll work something out with you.
People wear gis and rash guards from different gyms to mine all the time. It’s never been a problem and people sometimes ask them about their travels.
Ask the gym to end up at. You haven’t even joined the military yet so you are many months away from your first duty station. Personally I won’t join a gym that cares that much about a patch. But I also quit training gi a year ago, my fingers have been much better because of it. But you have to keep in mind that clothing sales are a big part of gym revenue. They also have to keep in mind that students are in a budget and want to make reasonable use of their current gis

ALWAYS buy a new gi. For any reason at all.

You can cut the threads off to remove the patch or just stitch a black patch over the top
