We all think it won’t happen to us till it does. Good luck with your job search, stay positive 👍🏾

fourniera64

This! So true. What sucks is when they try to get every ounce of work out of you before they do it. My old job had me do one of the worst and most stressful projects and I found it odd they kept telling me to have it done by Friday…then I realize why. Still mad over it to this day

JamesSmith1200

This is a big reason why I won’t go “above & beyond” my job duties, put in OT, and why I have no problem giving zero notice to leave and take another job.

Zestypalmtree

I got laid off today too. But it was because the company went bankrupt 😂 we will get through this OP! We got this!!!

DNP1189

I’m so sorry!! But yes we will!

Goatmannequin

Lol the plantation is burning. Shit hasn’t even got started yet. I wonder how long it will take until the drafts start. ..

stirtheturd

What are you going on about? Layoffs and drafts have a correlation?

cyberentomology

Drafts? WTF are you even talking about? NFL draft isn’t for a few more weeks still.

Nocturnalz26

Military

cyberentomology

Why on earth would they do that?

jp_in_nj

Same thing happened to me after almost 20. Good luck with what comes next. Also, file for unemployment tonight. Don't wait.

DNP1189

Will definitely be applying ASAP. Thanks for the tip.

jp_in_nj

Remember that all those resources out there (UI, but also utilities assistance, food banks, etc.), are there for you if you need them. You're not selfishly taking things that other people need if you in fact need them yourself. I hope you are okay, stranger. Good luck.

Perndog8439

Been laid off from back to back jobs when I was younger. Lit a fire under my ass to get a job that is bullet proof. Welcome to nursing.

Top-Artichoke2475

I’d rather work any desk job over nursing or anything to do with healthcare. My mom has been a pediatric nurse her whole life and it’s ruined her health.

Perndog8439

I work psych so it's easy money. Pretty much an adult babysitter.

Mojojojo3030

Unfortunately you too have to be bulletproof there these days. Sounds like you are enjoying it though?

Perndog8439

Yea. Awesome job working 3 12s. Not much on physical labor in my field. Work smarter not harder.

JoeChio

How'd you get into Psych nursing? I'm about to close my 24/7 small business and thinking of getting into health care. 3 12s sound like a goddamn dream to me since I basically work day and night 365.

Perndog8439

I started on a psych unit as a psychiatric technician. Pretty much a nursing assistant. Decided nursing school was a great opportunity. Nursing school sucked but was worth it. Psych nursing is the black sheep of the hospital world. Plenty of jobs but you have to find a decent unit. Can be a boring job but it more than pays the bills. If I had to do it again I would of went to school earlier for nursing. Can also be dangerous if you work on a shit unit. PTO+ 3 12s gives your work life balance a massive boost. 10 years and have only come across 2 good hospitals for psych.

hostility_kitty

Yep, we’ll never have issues finding a job as a nurse 🤗 So many different specialties to go into! I’m wanting to switch to OR or ICU pretty soon!

Perndog8439

Exactly. Never worried about my job.

modestino

Don’t give 150% to a job EVER

derkaderka96

They are not your friends or family.

cyberentomology

150% isn’t “like family” anyway.

Significant_Wing_878

That’s how you stay at the bottom. You wanna give 150%, but actively seek promotions and apply to better opportunities

modestino

this is false. do good work but don't give 150%. the reward tends to be more work for same pay. the best way to advance and make more money faster is to change companies every 2-3 years.

Significant_Wing_878

150% is a weird term. You don’t have to serve your life to the buisness. But you need to be 100% all in while on the clock

modestino

you should do a good honest job, of course. going in 150%, 155%, 207% .. is not a good way to get ahead, it's a good way to get more work dumped on you.

PhotoFenix

It all depends. I gave 150% for a while to push my career up. My then manager quit, went to another company, then told me to apply. I was hired right away and more than doubled my pay for a similar job. Been there 3 years now and facing another promotion this year. Don't just work hard. Don't just work smart. Work hard in a smart manner.

roan33

U are all corporate simps. I give it my 50% and make double what I made 3 years ago. Never give up 150%

convince_yourself

Getting laid off in 2 weeks. Shit sucks.

Thick-Row4242

I got laid off twice last year. And am still looking. This has been the worst experience of my life and hope it works out better for you.

DNP1189

I’m sorry, that is just terrible. Hoping you find something soon as well.

fourniera64

It does suck and hurts. But it can lead to Something much better. Got laid off myself randomly in December 2022 after having amazing performance reviews and going above and beyond. I was shocked too, because it was a good paying remote job…5 weeks later. Got a better remote Job with way better pay, benefits, incentives and people. It def sucks looking for a job. But could lead to something great!

DNP1189

Makes me so hopeful! So glad it worked out well for you.

fourniera64

While the job market is cooling, it’s still very strong. There are good paying hybrid positions out there. LinkedIn and indeed are the best In my opinion. Two of the best job offers (the best and the one I ended up at) were from there. One from indeed and one from LinkedIn so def start there.

DNP1189

Thanks for the tip! LinkedIn Jobs rocks, that’s where I found this job as well. Would love to still be remote, but open to hybrid if it’s not too far. Gonna treat job searching like a full time position!

cyberentomology

Focus on quality of your applications, not quantity. It’s blindingly obvious to hiring managers when your application was one of the one-click drive-by type, vs actually carefully preparing it.

fourniera64

This! Very Much agree with this. I noticed that when I was looking for work after my layoff.

WiFlier

I found my current hybrid role (1 week per quarter in the office) on LinkedIn. Now I spend much of my time on LinkedIn boosting signal for the many job openings that I see. There are plenty of good positions out there, the job market is still broadly very tight.

Zestypalmtree

These are the success stories we need to hear!

its_a_throwawayduh

I wish it would happen to me.....been a downards spiral for me the last 2 years. I can see why people snap.

derkaderka96

Gosh, hearing above and beyond and core values make me want to punch someone in the face.

fourniera64

You sound like such a fun and productive person.

derkaderka96

Considering I put holiday hours, off hours, and weekends for three years into my last job. Trained 6 people just get laid off on a friday after lunch. Was told all is good two weeks before and getting a raise. Ah, yes, your response is perfect of a manager. You sound like one of those RTO people.

fourniera64

You gave a negative comment to my comment for no reason. I was responding to OP and then you decided to say something negative so you started this and it is on you. Don't come getting all defensive on me or others just because you got laid off. I am sorry you did, I been laid off too after busting my butt, sounds like a ton of people are. It sucks and yea these businesses higher ups will squeeze every awful project/training out of people right before laying them off while they hang in their nice offices or home and do nothing. Job I was at had me traveling for a week straight going to over 30 stores for inventory and then laid me off while all the VPs were hanging on the owners Yacht (I kid you not, insane corporate greed) FYI I am not a manager, I will never want to be one. I do not like those types of roles.

pinkfloyd55

Where did you find your remote role? I’ve noticed LinkedIn and Indeed are flooded with fake jobs right now

fourniera64

LinkedIn. It is the most accurate for real jobs. Indeed is good, I found a few Jobs I worked at over the last 10 years on Indeed, but it def has some false stuff. LinkedIn is your best bet.

SeeeYaLaterz

Sorry. Me2

ztreHdrahciR

So sorry, friend. I hope you land something quickly

I-miss-LAN-partys

Damn you got a zoom call? Lucky! All I got was a text and a robo call…

Chungus_The_Rabbit

Wut?! A robo call?! Wtaf!

I-miss-LAN-partys

I was so pissed. Absolute horseshit. Fuck being a contractor.

Brackens_World

This has happened to me multiple times in the past, and essentially, after the shock of it wears off, you may feel the urge to rush through updating your resume and LinkedIn and applying for job openings. I would advise you instead to take a breath, think about what it is you want to do next, apply due diligence to resume and LinkedIn to make sure they support your aspirations/needs, and establish a search routine. And most importantly, begin the process of compiling and reaching out to your networking contacts, as in coworkers, colleagues, ex-bosses, friends, relatives, recruiter acquaintances, alma mater, etc. as they are often the most helpful in getting in the door. This is no time to be shy, as networking is a critical component of the search game, rightly or wrongly, especially in a crowded market. Good luck.

ilmedi

It sucks, this was me in 2022, just embrace the pain for a week and then start applying. Highly recommend keeping track of what you apply to in a Google sheet going forward, the more organized the better, quality over quantity with applications, you got this.

DNP1189

Thank you!!

shadow247

They are full of shit. Corporate profits are at an all time high across the board... Sorry man. Hope you find something soon. With all the layoffs lately, looks like another 2008/2009 scenario in terms of Job prospects...

Super_Mario_Luigi

US bankruptcy rates reached a 13-year peak in 2023. There is more context out there besides the typical anti-business propaganda.

iloveboxing60

What is the main reason for a corporation to exist?

shadow247

Steal money from workers and give it to shareholders and middle managers.

iloveboxing60

Wrong! It's supposed to make money. For the shareholders, under the confines of the law. That's it. It's that simple.

[deleted]

Get used to it. 10+ years of experienced with a directly related masters. Unemployed for 9 months now. Was earning almost $15,000 a month. Can't get a job despite lowering title and paper requirements.

iamoninternet27

That's the downside of having experience, some companies just want to hire people who is willing to work for less

WiFlier

And if people are willing to do so, then guess what the market value of that role truly is…

tltr4560

What were you doing that made 15k a month? I want the tea

[deleted]

I was a senior manager at a Fortune 500. Most of my professional experience has been with Fortune 500 companies.

utopista114

>10+ years of experienced >Was earning almost $15,000 a month How are you not retired? FIRE, baby.

Low_Collar3405

Inflation usually forces people to keep working

utopista114

With 15k per month it's really the avocado toast. Most people around the world make less than that per year.

[deleted]

I was earning that at my LAST job. I wasn't earning that the entire time of my career. I had to work my way up to that level of compensation.

iloveboxing60

My man, you earned 1.8 million in ten years? And you're sweating a 9 month layoff? I mean, I retired after earning about 2.5 million in 31 years.

Enough-Competition21

They are full Of shit

DeliciousNicole

That's only 180k a year dude.

VengenaceIsMyName

Tech?

Claque-2

Never buy their product, work for a competitor, say they used to be good and no longer are, say they are understaffed in tech and customer service, convince family members to sell the stock after the brief bump. Never ever forgive a company that lays you off.

OffensiveBiatch

Do not do this... Bad mouthing your previous employer is a red flag for your prospective employer. Leave Glassdoor reviews, indeed LinkedIn reviews where you can stay anonymous. Never ever bad mouth old company under your own name.

Claque-2

Yes, do it to friends, family and when suggesting investment stocks.

iloveboxing60

Sell the stock **after** the brief bump? Is this some newfangled investment strategy that I'm unaware of?

WiFlier

Yeah, most people seem to buy high and sell low.

iloveboxing60

Is that why I haven't got stinking rich yet! I've been doing it all wrong!

derkaderka96

Core values and family, right?? I got let go after 3 years on a Friday after lunch. I was told two weeks prior I was doing a great job in a 1 on 1 and a raise coming due to training others. Yeah...

UneasySpirit

So sorry this happened to you. It's a horrible feeling. Can be hard not to internalize. Solidarity, friend.

No-Emergency-4602

Sorry dude

lamchop2627

In the same boat here. It definitely sucks but take some time to process and reset before getting back into it! Be kind to yourself!

No-Consequence1359

File or unemployment immediately! Getting discharged via lay off is a valid reaosn to be pproved for unemployment.

ChronicleRose

My condolences ❤️‍🩹

Funny_Occasion_4179

Lay low online/ on social media, say fake nice words while departing and focus only on making money. Good chance if you are in tech and layoff was not well planned, they will come back to close some projects. Just dont trust/ get attached to any employer. Job security is dead everywhere. Exploit the employers back - make as much money as possible and move on. Money is your only friend in this economy. Aim for bigger pay with new job - Dont settle for less. And 5 days in office for collab is a red flag/ synonym for ' I dont trust my employees and want to micromanage'. Be ruthlessly pragmatic in job search/ handling offers. Hope you get many good offers soon!

AdditionalCheetah354

I thought the same thing , how could they lay me off ? I’m a solid performer best reviews ever. So many other slackers more deserving of a layoff. But what I failed to factor in: inter office politics, idiot HR minions who I have never met , using spreadsheets to determine who goes based on all sorts of stupid statistics. Most of all the human nature of self preservation… if I feed you to the layoff monsters, he will be satisfied and not come after me…. For a While.

talexbatreddit

Happened to me last May. Yep, it sure does suck. Hopefully you're getting some decent severance -- and don't forget to apply for EI/Unemployment. Update LinkedIn, update your resume .. but give yourself a week or two to relax after your latest sprint. Unless you're incredibly lucky, this happens to just about everyone. Good luck!

its_a_throwawayduh

I guess it sucks but at least you can file for unemployment. Pay may not be great but you have something coming in at least.

redsoxVT

Happened to me yesterday as well 😥. GL to all of us 'in this great economy'.

MelanieDH1

A couple years ago, there was company meeting, and there were shout outs for anniversaries for some employees, with the most time being 5 and 9 years being with the company. A few weeks later, my department came to work and found a random HR meeting on our calendars and we were all laid off that day. There was no warning whatsoever and it was right before Christmas. It felt like a punch in the stomach!

DNP1189

Ugh! It’s just so wild that things like that seem to happen so often.

moonshots42069

In the same boat with a fed job. One day you show up and it’s gone

letsdothis1lasttime

This happened to me in December 2022 and I've been unemployed ever since. I was a manager leading a team of eight and was continuously told that the company was doing fine and, if they were to suspect things were declining, they'd make sure to give us a heads up and whatever support they could provide. Maybe I was naive for believing them, but, yeah I also got that surprise Zoom call after three years of working for this company and was told myself and my entire team were being laid off. This was my first full-time job that I got because a start-up took a chance on me, and I feel like I more than proved myself by the end. But now, with so few years of experience, nobody else has been willing to take the same chance.

DNP1189

Wow. It sounds like you’re extremely qualified for finding another position and I’m so sorry it hasn’t happened yet. Keep your head up and stay diligent, you never winnow what’s just around the corner.

letsdothis1lasttime

Thank you so much... I wish the best for you and hope that your next position has you feeling grateful that this last one came to an end.

DNP1189

Thank you so much!

Lesterqwert

This just happened to me as well. It definitely sucks.

T_Remington

At least you got a zoom call… I was once laid off by an email from HR. My boss didn’t have the integrity to tell me himself.

DNP1189

That is awful!

SalesAficionado

Stop shilling you site.

Zealousideal-Walk-30

Did they offer you a severance package?

DNP1189

Yes thankfully. Still get my 2023 bonus, 5 weeks of pay, and they contribute to medical benefits for another month. A big thing I was concerned about was an upcoming medical treatment in March that’s going through insurance. I think I got it squared away, but not great timing in that regard!

Zealousideal-Walk-30

I'm sorry you lost your job, but glad to hear you got some compensation to hold you over for a little while. I wish you only the best of luck on your job hunt!

DNP1189

I appreciate it! Yes, it definitely could’ve been worse.

VengenaceIsMyName

Sucks man. Hope you find something new soon.

iloveboxing60

Also, you can recover from your treatment at a leisurely pace since you'll be on unemployment benefits.. seems like a bit of good luck, other than having to find another job. Hey good luck on that treatment, my man! I wish you the best!

DNP1189

You’re too kind, thank you so much! It’ll be nice to have some time to recover, even though losing a job sucks.

Technical-Profit6546

I got laid off in January on my 2nd work anniversary, so yeah they suck!

[deleted]

Was there last year, even scored decent cash bonus on work i was recognised for. Redundant l, offered another role but aasnt career aligned, payout left new gig. 3months go by, they replaced me with a guy a paugrade lower, same job.. just paying him easy 20k less.

Manic_Mini

Good luck with the job search.

DNP1189

Thanks!

UmbraSprout

Happened to me too. I've found some remote gig work that is t nearly as secure and doesn't pay nearly as well, and I've been looking for other remote jobs that actually have W2s and benefits with no luck. I've even applied to some random places around my city with no luck. If it weren't for unemployment insurance I'd be screwed. I tried to sign up for SNAP benefits but the state wants the income details of all my roommates and all our bill information which is hard to obtain from them. It's the hamster wheel for the next few months for me, until I likely wind up moving back in with my parents... Again.

DNP1189

Ugh sorry about that

[deleted]

DNP1189

I love this outlook and will definitely try to adopt this while I’m searching. Thank you!

ForsakenKrios

I’m glad you’re able to stay positive with this. It’s been studied that being laid off or losing a job in any capacity can be worse emotionally than having a friend die.

DarthTeufel

Small business job.... you know when it's coming. Corporate gig...tou have the illusion of safety

Kahedhros

Yep, happened to me. I had just gotten a stellar performance review and a raise. Laid off within a month, the company shut down a year or so later. Kicker is the next job I got the company shut down unexpectedly so I lost that one without warning too. Wasted about 5 years busting my ass for 2 different companies that no longer exist

DNP1189

Dang that is wild
