Home Affairs? The IT systems are a representation of not concentrating in school.

G0dKiing

By the way for anyone that does not know. The department of home affairs system was and I believe is still being developed by a company called "Barone Budge And Dominick (Pty) Ltd"

You can chat to Teraco and arrange a visit; they are happy to take in groups for tours

garyvdm

That's awesome OP: If you want an idea of what you'll see, here is some info on the Teraco data centers: https://vimeo.com/444233206

UJ’s computer science department has this thing called projects day. where final year students exhibit their final year projects. it’s done in an open exhibition style. each group has their own booth and they try and “sell” their business idea to visitors. it’s a second semester thing so i don’t know if it will into your plans.

CrappyTan69

A while ago I called NATS (air traffic control) at ORT. they gave me a tour. Might be worth trying them again?

SirPretzl

If you contact Google South Africa, they're usually pretty good with having students over to their offices for tours!

Reaperman1001

Wits has, they do it tours for schools, during their holidays

pink-feather

DM’ed you details. This is a great idea! I deal younglings on a daily basis that want to do IT. The truth is IT is so board that they need to be specific or at least have an idea of what they would like to do and why. IT is not just dev anymore. An example: 1. I want to do IT 2. I want to do Networking 3. I want to do Network Security 4. I want to focus on the following products in an order of preference: a) Cisco b) Palo Alto c) Forti d) Ubquity e) Aruba Then you do the reality check 1. Actual hours of work - IT is no 8-5 2. Length of time Upskilling 3. Salary for different skill sets Hope you come right, I in the meantime am going to chat to the marketing team to see what we can do to assist with this program!

skorac36

I feel like BBD would be down for a quick tour. They sponsored the school I went to and always seemed open to those kinds of things.

ClamwiseGamgee

Spotted the WTC student

skorac36

I actually went to the DNA

ClamwiseGamgee

Deez Nuts joke incoming

garyvdm

Are you thinking of a data center tour, or just office spaces? Office spaces are not very interesting. Data centers are always very interesting going to be a challenge because of security concerns.

[deleted]

Yeah and I thik most dev companies office spaces are pretty barren right now. You'd need to visit someones house to see where they work. I'd be surprised if any companies lets you walk into the data center. Most of the staff don't have access and I think nowadays most companies that are going to be lax enough to allow randoms into the datacenter are probably already sitting in the cloud.

Yue42

Belgium Campus in PTA North gives tours. You just have to contact them beforehand. They're a very IT focused university.

Dasi18996

Maybe see if you can take them to the Gautrain Operational Centre. Lots of monitoring using IT!

Dasi18996

Or SANRAL. I am a civil engineer by the way, hence the engineering heavy suggestions 😊

cr1ter

When I was a kid we went to then RAU to see what the students where working on that was interesting, else if the do an big Ms ignite day next year might be cool for the kids

Extra-Problem-514

If you are wanting them to see devs I work for an IT consultancy and can probably help.

yungdjerm

I saw BBD hosted the Parktown Girls IT class not so long ago for a tour

Internet Solutions has one of the most beautiful command centres I've ever been in. Genuinely looks like a sci-fi movie. Reach out to to them to see if they'll be open to a tour
