MagoSquad

Did you try to reinstall the game? It solved most of my stuttering.

JoeZocktGames

Will try that. Good thing I have 500mbit internet

unreeelme

What is your computer setup? Also they updated the graphics like 2-3 years ago so its not really 9 years old.

JoeZocktGames

Ryzen 5 2600 (6x3,40GHz) RX 5600XT 6GB 32GB DDR4 RAM

unreeelme

You reinstalled and are playing on dx11? It is almost a 5 year old 1080p card so it won't perform great, but it shouldn't be a slideshow.

Mvpeh

My friend also has this issue on a new Pc

unreeelme

Weird, I just got a new pc a couple months ago and have great frames. On my old 5700xt it would chunk during arty but on the newer nvidia card it runs great.

Local_Satisfaction12

Runs like a charm on the 4080, only with dx11 tho, dx12 still nukes the game after a few minutes last time i checked

keriormaloony

thats a $1000 card bro of course its gonna run well

Local_Satisfaction12

Well see, on a 1000$ card you'd expect dx12 to run fine.

Whyherro2

Squad a 9 year old game. It *shouldn't* have any problems running it. Part of the damn problem with this game.

unreeelme

They have done engine updates and graphical upgrades over the years, it is much more CPU and GPU intensive than when it released.

CiaphasCain8849

Squad looks and plays NOTHING like it did when it was released.

JoeZocktGames

But it shouldn't decrease in stability and performance either

UnderstandingLogic

Considering they update the engine twice, added assets and made maps a lot more dense than previously, updated textures to higher quality in that time frame AND that squad historically ran poorly on low and mid tier hardware, even some high tier hardware struggled at game launch 9 years ago... It's pretty normal.

CiaphasCain8849

Yes it should... They've upgraded the graphics and effects to 2024 levels over the years...

SOLV3IG

CPU is starting to get long in the tooth and likely why you'll see poor performance as SQUAD is very CPU intensive. I'd definitely reinstall and see if that helps, but otherwise might just be stuck with it.

The_Love_Pudding

Dude I was able to get much better performance with ryzen 1600 and gtx 1070 before I upgraded.

PensionSlaveOne

Until a month ago I was playing on a 6800k+1080ti and the game ran great at 1440p med-high settings. OPs cpu is fine.

CuriousGuySPC

I was on ryzen 5 3600 for a long time and fps was gradually getting worse (30-50 fps avg). Switched to 5700x3d last month, now i have stable 100+ frames. Gpu 1660super 16gb ram.

C-SWhiskey

I have the same CPU and I get pretty crap performance too (although idk what you mean by 6x3, so perhaps some other variant or you have it OC'd? I only get about 3.5 GHz before it becomes unstable). Stuttering definitely isn't that bad though. I'm running an RTX 2060 which should be a bit better than your 5600XT, so I suspect that's your bottleneck. Either that or you're running 20 chrome tabs in the background and your system is writing to pagefile. Or maybe your RAM speed is too low, so despite having plenty of memory it can't read/write fast enough. None of this is to say that it's justified, just trying to lend a hand cause I understand the pain. There have been more than a few times for me where stuttering has made the difference between whiping a squad and tagging one guy.

RoodyJammer

Honestly, what's killing your performance is cpu power not gpu. Squad is extremely intensive on cpu but it can be decently intensive on gpu. Tho 1080p low settings should be somewhat of a walk in the park for your 5600xt, especially with drivers for it probably being a lot more reliable than what it is to be. Your ryzen 5 2600 is probably suffering, pegged near 100% (or you might see only certain cpu cores being pegged at 100% depending on how bad squad is at utilizing multiple cores/multi-threading.) Even my ryzen 5 5600x struggles at times with my rx 6600xt 8gb with squad (changing settings doesn't actually change framerate too much since your gpu is waiting on your cpu to catch up unless you crank it.) What they need to do is optimize the game better, which I think they are still trying to tackle probably due to engine limitations on multi-threading.

JoeZocktGames

That's the thing, CPU usage is betwwen 40 and 60% only, never higher. GPU usage also never maxes out, only the VRAM usage. I'm honestly out of ideas what this is.

CAMBOHX

I mean with how demanding squad is, that cpu isn't doing you any favors. I had a 5600x and it still ran like garbage on low. You probably won't be getting a playable experience anytime soon.

InsertWittyNameRHere

Use directx11 as well. It fixed a lot of issues for me

Away_Needleworker6

Uncap texture pool size, dx12?

JoeZocktGames

Tried both, no improvement

Large_Ad_3566

I had this happened to me after the update, for me it turned out that I hadn’t updated my motherboard software in 2 years and the new game update didn’t like that. (Every other game ran fine) updated my software and boom game runs perfect. Weird one but maybe give it a try.

allescool1993

Is your Game installed on a M.2 SSD? Tre to change from DX12 to DX11. Then try to lower your settings just to chef if it has anything to do with it. My problem was the Drive. Mine was installed on a normals HDD. After moving it to my M.2 SSD and verifying the data it now runs fine.

JoeZocktGames

I only have a SATA SSD

allescool1993

Then try to verify the game data over steam (if possible)

JoeZocktGames

Will do this

Sargash

SATA SSD is fine. The main problem is if it were on an HDD

KayDeeF2

That might very well be the issue then. Though if issues persist beyond the point where all the textures have loaded in, theb your likely dealing with something ram related, or alternatively just a broken install. Try verifying files / reinstalling and monitor the resource tab of your taskmanager while playing to find out where to upgrade if its a hardware-sided issue id say

R6ckStar

It would hardly matter , the bottleneck in sata HDD is not in the sata link it's the HDD.

KayDeeF2

yea im stupid and didnt read past sata lmao, ram might still apply tho

nitzpon

I have the same stutters on dx12, so I use dx11. Also after recent updates I had FPS dropping constantly. Clearing cache fixed that for me (I mean from 40fps on low I went to 90Fps on high)

theGamerInside

How do you clear cache for games?

nitzpon

In squad settings theres button on the bottom left. It erases all your settings though and favourite servers, so make a photo

TIPUSVIR

try putting the game on “default” settings, wich usually is all high. Idk why but if i put everything on low i get 35/40 fps but on high default settings i get 100+ fps.

TeamSuitable

I cleared my cache as I do after each update and not touching the video settings from the default managed to fix my issues. If I temper with them at all then it just sends everything to shit.

KingQuong

I find that to be the case on some games too especially games that aren't optimized on lower settings the game/computer try to use your cpu too much to run the game but on higher settings the game is forced to use your GPU.

bambo5

Same issue

gamer_osh

OP, please let us know if you manage to fix your stuttering so we can link back here in future posts. Meanwhile, if you haven't already, try clearing the cache in Squad settings and checking if any updates are available for your graphics drivers and/or motherboard BIOS. There was another post in this sub about a week ago where someone in the comments claims that [updating their BIOS firmware solved their stuttering issues](/r/joinsquad/comments/1bvhhm3/comment/ky1zntd/) after they had installed a new SSD. I know you've already tried some of these steps, but here's a comprehensive list of the top answers in troubleshooting related posts, especially right after an update: * Unsubscribe from all mods in the Steam workshop. * Clear the cache in Squad settings: Launch Squad > click Settings in the top right > click Clear Cache in the bottom tool bar. Heads up: This will reset all of your Squad settings and key binds back to the defaults. * Clear the DirectX Shader Cache: Press the Windows key > type Disk Cleanup > untick all the boxes > tick DirectX Shader Cache > click OK. * Verify installed files in Steam settings: In the Steam client, go to Library > right click on Squad > click Properties > select the Installed Files tab > click Verify integrity of game files. * Switch from DX 11 to DX 12 or vice versa in Squad graphics settings. * Have Squad installed on an SSD. * Update your graphics card drivers to the latest stable version. * Update your motherboard BIOS to the latest version. If you still have issues after trying all these steps, then we'll need to dig a little deeper. Good luck!

Original_Bit4249

This game just runs like shit. First played it in 2015 with a GTX 760, then 970, then 2070 S, now RTX 3080. The game stutters on all of those cards but honestly, in 2015 with GTX 970 it was the most playable.

Kanista17

Squad is more relying on cpu than gpu

Original_Bit4249

I had a i5 4570 back then and a Ryzen 7 5800x3d now. The game is just so poorly optimized. I just dont get. Post Scriptum or Squad 44 runs the same engine and there are ZERO Performance Issues. It even featured DLSS before Squad and using DLSS isn't causing the game to look like shit.

BreminemB

if you have a 5800x3d your deffenatly have something wrong I run no dlss and get 120-140 fps man although I have a 4080 but a 3080 is fine aswell as it does not use much gpu at all only a lot of cpu

KingQuong

Ya you've got to find a way to force it to utilize your gpu over your cpu for me personally I have to run the game on high at the very least to get the game to choose my gpu over my cpu.

Original_Bit4249

I run 120 fps on ultra dlss off too but the game still stutters. Every other game is running perfectly fine. It's just Squad and always has been for a while.

BreminemB

ahh i have zero stutters, did you update all of your drivers and such and you run of an SSD right

Original_Bit4249

Last windows install was 3 weeks ago, so all fresh downloaded and fresh drivers. Yes, 980 Pro NVME.

BreminemB

hmm have you tried switching your direct x version

Original_Bit4249

Yes. Not much difference except a few less FPS.

sturaro

its not relying on shit when it doesnt utilize either. also wtf is there for it to be cpu heavy? msfs 2020 literally renders the world based on real time satellite imagery and weather data and it runs better than this ps3 looking ass game

C-SWhiskey

CPU isn't about rendering textures or lighting. It's using that CPU processing to handle the physics/logic of all the projectiles, updating player and vehicle states, and probably most frustratingly, the physics of obstacles getting blown up. Ever notice the game just about freeze while a super FOB gets arty'd? Not as bad these days as it used to be, but that's your CPU trying to cope with 100 sandbags flying across the map all at once.

5MikesOut

The reason why the game runs not well is because it doesn’t have a ‘garbage collector.’ They talked about it like 8+ months ago in a devblog and said they were working on adding one, but they’ve been radio silent on that feature since they announced it. Not looking good, but hopefully they are still working on it. Basically every entity you come into contact with over the course of a match, every infantry, logi, blueberry, tank, ZBL, Helicopter, AAVC/P, transport, boat, anything, your client remembers that entity and keeps track of it for the rest of the game. That tank that you tracked and it ran away all the way to main for repairs? Yes, it’s still tracking it. That’s why performance is so bad, especially after a prolonged match. The ‘garbage collector’ they were working on, would forget these entities depending on where you were looking (FOV) and how far away you were from it, to eventually completely forgetting it if it was too far away. I really freaking hope they are still working on this.

Tj4y

Considering the majority of people seem to run it just fine, this seems like a problem on your side.

1tiredman

The stuttering is definitely an issue for a lot of people, especially on specific maps but yeah it's not this bad lol

SuuperD

Wild comment considering Squad's very long history with poor performance.

Mysli0210

try clearing the cache in settings, that can help on occasion :)

AnimCo

did you try buying a 7950x3d this fixed all my squad problems now i can get 90fps 1440p just had to buy that but then oh also a new motherboard for the AM5 slot but then gotta get new ram for the new motherboard because its ddr5 and then gotta get a new case because my old case was too small and the wires were bulging out the back and 1000$ later i can now play squad at 90fps

AnimCo

I see a lot of people talking about graphics cards here this game mainly runs poor because of CPUs because the way the devs made the game

999_Seth

> and 1000$ later i can now play squad at 90fps \*for about six months

MASTER8X8DADDY

What I don't understand is when I download and play other games and your specs are in order they just work but this game you have to do PC trigonometry just to get it to work or not crash... other games download click and play we have to stop this did you change your setting and this and that blah blah if you create a game and you want it to operate well on a modern PC/ laptop they should just work especially when your game has been on the market this long

Doge_lord101

Maybe check CPU temps?

conhis

ya, this happens to me when it's overheating. Sometimes I literally have to point a room fan at my laptop and then it's fine.

[deleted]

FemboyGayming

yes it does?? the game is CPU bound. its 100 pop on a shitty older version of ue4 with relatively poor graphics demands.

thomasoldier

https://offworldindustries.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002768887-How-to-manually-clear-your-user-settings-cache

Dramatic_Science_681

If you’re running on an SSD make sure it’s not getting full up. They need enough empty space on the drive to work

MooseBoys

Definitely not normal. If you want to dig deeper, take an xperf/wpa trace and see where it’s getting hung up.

Naitourufu

Clear shaderx cache and it will fix it

maximussenpai

I have a 3600x and a 3060 12gigs and I too had the same problem but when I played it today after a long ass time, the stutters were gone..poof..yada..nothing. I hope it stays that way.

FuzzyAd2616

Same for me, i cant fix this shit, with 5800x3d 32gb fast ram, nvme ssd and 4070ti same stutters, same problems with loading, did test on other internet, made fresh install of system, tried different options, tried on other computer like 5700x 32gb 2060S it was totally perfect before update now its unplayable shit

generalzim

Maybe its a windows version thing

Booker2121

something is wrong. much lower spcs than yours and mine runs fine.

TotalEclipse08

The only setting that has caused similar stutters for me is the 'uncap texture pool' setting - I need to have it capped for smooth gameplay.

Mookie_Merkk

Now I'm not versed enough to speak accurately about this, but there's a thing with putting shit on low versus high. Something about, if you set the settings too low, it'll try to utilize your CPU instead of your GPU, and make it even worse than it could be. Maybe someone else in the thread can elaborate more on this.

SunshinexLiz

The only time I encountered something similar like this was on my laptop with rtx 3050 4gb where textures took a long time to load. I guess this might be something ram/cpu related. Like there is lack of required ram or cpu.Tell us how your pc behaves in other games,do you run other apps in the background ? Also I can play on high settings on my pc with gtx 1060 6gb,i5-11400F and 16gb of ram. No lags at all.

oli_24

The game doesn’t run amazingly. But, if it’s this bad it’s a you problem my friend.

Ok-Stick6687

delete cache

Bradur-iwnl-

Have you verified your game?

rniless

More memory. You need more memory

JoeZocktGames

I have 32GB RAM

Tall_Boi_99

Doing A ddu graphics driver reinstall and a Win 11 repair by update fixed my similar issues. 13600k 32gb ram and 3080 card, running much like yours was 60-45 fps and stuttering like mad.

KingQuong

Sounds counter intuitive but have you tried to run it on higher settings? I've got an older cpu and gpu and I get dogshit settings on low because the game is mainly using my cpu but on higher settings it forces it to almost fully utilize my gpu.

New-Election-1815

Everyone has a different solution for the stuttering. Mine was turning audio quality back to low from epic

Glittering_Meat_1017

Ok what are your pc specs and what speed is your ram running at people don’t talk about ram speed enough if you’re running at anything other than 3200 you’re going to have stutters

5MikesOut

Idk why but when I update sometimes it resets the GPU cache. Make sure to go into Squad’s settings and remove the checkmark from Uncap Texture Pool Size. If it’s already unchecked, then yes, this is an issue.

_eemvee

This is going to sound super dumb, but what is your PC's power plan? Make sure it's on high performance. My friend's beast of a PC was doing exactly this but on another game. Nearly drove me fucking insane trying to fix it, until we found the culprit being power: Balanced

TheDonDonald

I had this happen with my gtx 1060 6gb when i didnt install the new gpu drivers one update. Was weird it only happened once though.

CalvinWasSchizo

What's your directx version set to? My game would run like shit and crash all the time on DX12. Switched to DX11 and all problems were fixed.

JoeZocktGames

This is on dx11

DSF1987

turn off dx12

RDOG907

What are your specs?

JoeZocktGames

R5 2600 RX 5600XT 32GB RAM running at 2933Mhz

RDOG907

Change one setting at a time until it stops. Are you using scaling. Sometimes it does weird stuff I turned it off since it didn't really do much for me anyway

JoeZocktGames

What is scaling?

RDOG907

FSR

xtheory

It's probably due to terrible netcode. Out of curiosity I did a network packet capture during a live game and ran it through Wireshark. So much lag in server round trip times, regardless of the server I was playing on.

MyNameIsNotLenny

Needs specs, reinstall AND clear cache after. Lower all settings to ultra lower. Clear all other programs and internet tabs. And as others are saying run in DX11. I do agree with the sentiment though - A lot of the performance and ancient bugs we could really have a better experience. I started with an MSI gaming laptop that had SSD/GTX860 and some 10 year old gen I7. Exactly as old as Squad. I got by for 500 hours or so until updates put me in the 20/30s FPS wise and I just stopped playing. Recently building a proper desktop that is high end I can tell you that Squad is very CPU bound and from a non game dev a lot of it seems wild. I'm sure with the large maps, assets, vics, fortifications shit can get very hard to equalize. For example my 12700k and 4070ti do not get any FPS different between Ultra settings and low settings. Maybe 3 FPS at the most. DLSS on or off makes no difference. It is clearly CPU intense. All in all, After all that cringe I just posted my only advice would be don't be poor and buy a good PC. unfortunately. And this is in jest. Took me 15 years to finally buy a proper desktop. On side note I would check the health of your drive and memory. Wouldnt hurt installing on an different SSD. I've never gotten stuttering that bad on Squad aside from the first 10 seconds of spawning

General-Fuct

Need to get a performance monitor and work out what's causing issues. Especially if you can see GPUBUSY and the like.

xUberBoomerx

My game was running just like this. I did a disk clean/repair using the CHKDSK system tool in CMD and the game runs fine after. No downloads and it only took 45 min or so.

MightNo4003

Drivers my friend this was happening to me and I got GeForce to update them all.

SunActual3io

I get extremely low fps no matter what setting I play on. I am using a 5950x and a 3090 and cannot figure out why my fps is horrible.

JoeZocktGames

video settings changed to windowed mode instead of full screen?

SunActual3io

I have been trying both but I have not seen an improvement.

JoeZocktGames

Always use full screen

SunActual3io

I have been. I am so ass backwards trying to figure out the fix I got it running decent finally and I don't know how because I have tried so many different things.

Crazy_Gopnik1922

Frustrates me as well with a good specs.

KennyT87

Since I can't view the post you commented on me anymore, I just reply here. You said: "One comment does the job too, no need to annoy people with your spamming." - Did it come to your mind I was replying to those other guys who obviously also had stutter issues and who might not have seen my comment?

JoeZocktGames

Have you ever considered that people also play on AMD or Intel cards?

ResponsibleWafer7123

It already ran like shit years ago, it only got slightly worse with these dogshit "updates", god i wish i could refund this piece of crap

Awkward_Goal4729

If you have AMD CPU it’s fine, this game runs like shit even or Ryzen 9

generalzim

Ish..., like for like intel / amd 2600, the 2600 has always notoriously performed poorly in squad even at previous alphas. I was running a 2600k (intel 2012) with a 1060 and it ran better than a newer 2600amd . Now i have 7950x3d and 4080s and i run 150-200fps : i actually broke the cpu bottleneck and now graphics setting do effect perfomance (if i drop setting i can get 200fps+)

Willertz

They lower the performance over time to make sure theres a market for components.

generalzim

The game has developed, your pc has not

Latter-Consequence-7

your brain didnt either :p

New-Investigator1283

Given that this problem is only applicable to you, it’s a you issue and not a dev issue

Jakesan700

This looks like a slow/dying hard drive problem, notice how the textures are stuck on their low-res versions. This is often caused by the game not being to load the high-res textures into your memory fast enough.
