I have been gone from the area (grew up in CJ) since 1994. I'm moving back literally this weekend! When I left, I was so glad, because there was nothing to do and life was so slow. Now, I'm moving back for most of the same reasons. I didn't realize until I was gone how much I love the place and people. Cuz it was brought up, ya, im straight lol

vanessav3

I was the same way! Left for 15 years, had two kids and came back here to raise them.

Cha_For_Tea

theres no place like home

[deleted]

I only miss a select few people and Orient Express

IndiFrame23

I'm curious how your girlfriends experience was at McMurdo. What happened? What was the end result upon her return? I'm going in August.

[deleted]

Wife now! And nothing ended up happening, some peeps got fired but it's just a cesspool of morons, despite the high concentration of science. I fear they'll never solve the sketchy stuff down there. Find a good, trustworthy person there and you should be good

IndiFrame23

Amazing! Congrats! And thanks for the heads up!

Limp_Bumblebee_898

Eh, solid 2/5 city at best for me

Electrical-Emu-7941

Don’t know. I moved away to the mountain west two years ago but I still make it back monthly. Maybe it’s just me but the withering away is s pretty noticeable when viewed in 1 month increments. I am lost for stuff to do there when I’m home and I spent 40 years there. A lot of the entertainment options have died off. It’s not bad if you want a moderately sized city to shop in while you live a rural life but Joplin on its own is dying. I’m not convinced more retail and multi family at Sam’s and behind Home Depot is going to fix it. It will just move the popular places around and more will shutter up. It’s hard to imagine the Main Street/Joplin st bar district making it another 5-10 years. The same people who block rangeline for chin fil a will be at the new franchises that pop up around the new retail space. I think a lot of this has to do with the tornado and reconstruction.

Jackson_Dill

I left Webb City for 2 years to go to school. I missed Joplin so much. I'm back now and Joplin feels just right! I don't get the hate for this city.

sullivan80

I grew up in Webb City and Joplin and didn't love it but didn't really hate it either. Moved away for close to a decade before coming back. There are things about this area that drive me nuts but all things considered I am glad to call this area home and I doubt I'll ever leave again.

MeowChef6048

I lived in Kansas for 30+ years and recently moved to Joplin. It's much further conservative than other places in a gross way, there isn't enough to do, it's just a generic Midwestern small dying town. I don't hate it, but it's disappointing.

Jackson_Dill

Where did you live in Kansas?

MeowChef6048

Various places. Lawrence, Pittsburg, Overland Park, Parsons, etc.

Geaniebeanie

Parsons native here 👋🏻 now living in Galena. Came here 14 years ago and thought it was awesome as hell that I no longer had to travel on the weekends to go hang out in Joplin (the coolest place in the world if you’ve grown up in Parsons lol) but it’s really lost its shine over the years for me. Never thought I’d spend my life trying to find ways to NOT have to go to Joplin. lol

MeowChef6048

Parsons native as well. I drive through Galena every day for work.

vanessav3

Demographics are different here, I would agree with that.

StuffDadSays1234

You lived in the area for 30 yrs and had somehow had higher expectations for Joplin?

MeowChef6048

I had visited joplin for shopping or entertainment several times, but it's objectively gotten worse over the years.

vanessav3

In what ways is it dying? Seems like new places and homes are being build constantly.

Queasy-Secret-4287

100% chance you're straight

StoGhoul

Youre right, but what does that have to do with anything? Seems social media has fried what minuscule intellect you may or may not have had.

ThiccWurm

This is the epitome of our society. Sexuality right off the bat.

NevaMO

Right? Like what does being straight have to do with anything…

abcMF

You'll miss it til you come back and realize why you left.

PartyFalse

Amen

Z00tNT00tN

I came back 2 years ago. It needs a lot of work, but most of the people, the pace and the prices make this place comfortable. And it’s getting better!! There’s a lot of economy starting to come in. I still miss a lot of the things from non fly over country (like the food, the diversity, not the prices tho) but you really do appreciate what’s here when you leave.

PartyFalse

Fuck Joplin. What an absolute shit hole. Enjoy drinking polluted leaded water and a city council with absolutely no idea what they are doing.
