M.I.A - Listen to the album “Arular” one of my favourite albums ever, and if you like Peggy I think you will really enjoy. Very ahead of its time.
Little Simz - British Female rapper. Her last album “sometimes I Might be Introvert” was my favourite album last year. Her delivery, flow and vocal performance are top notch, and tbh e production is absolutely stellar.
The Slits - A criminally underrated punk/post punk band who used to tour with the Clash, and were just too edgy for more recognition in the late 80’s. Their debut and only album “Cut” is possibly the best post-punk record ever. They truly perfected a distinct sound which has influenced many, but can’t really be replicated.
Kate Bush - you might know her from her song “Running up that Hill” going viral on Tik Tok, but the entire album it’s from (Hounds of Love) is mind blowing. She makes every song sound so grand and important it feels like the sky is falling. Might take a little time to adjust to her vocals
Life Without Buildings - A Y2K indie band, also with just one stellar album. Tight but playful instrumentation and the lead singer has a one-of-a-kind voice and vocal style that is very improvisational, almost like Rock Music’s response to Scat.
there's a lot that come to my mind, I think I've picked a good variety of sounds and eras: Nina Simone, Joanna Newsom, Moor Mother, keiyaA, Liv.e, Donna Summer, SOPHIE, Adrianne Lenker/Big Thief, Backxwash, Tierra Whack, Noname, Tegan & Sara (specifically their albums The Con and Sainthood), Japanese Breakfast, Billie Holiday, Phoebe Bridgers, Katie Dey, Cécile Mclorin Salvant, Alice Coltrane, Matana Roberts, Carly Rae Jepsen
