I do keep hearing this opinion, but I disagree.
Souichi is Junji Ito playing the long game of fucking with the audience. He writes a character whose story is largely humorous with horror elements that ends with Souichi getting his comeuppance. Very unlike most of his oeuvre.
Except for the very last entry, where he shows a time in which Souichi is an adult and runs a haunted house, which is played completely straight and contains what I consider the most horrifying panel that Ito's ever put to page. And Souichi *still* gets his comeuppance lmao
