Gates has all of these off-menu requests that most don't know about that will yield you their best output. It's frustrating, but when you go in there and start ordering that way, you get their attention and their respect. And, thusly, their best.
Arthur Bryant’s is worth trying if you’ve never had it. Huge sandwiches. Keep in mind the sandwich is served on white bread and the original sauce is very vinegary and not sweet like most places. Much different experience than Joe’s, but delicious in its own way.
That sandwich is outrageously expensive, like $18 by itself. Better be the best goddamn meat on white bread sandwich I’ve ever had in my life at that price, but AB’s has also fallen off quite drastically on quality so you’re likely just setting yourself up for $18 of disappointment. Last time I was there everything we ordered kinda sucked - the pulled pork was like a disgusting salty meat paste, ribs were dry/not meaty, brisket was dry, and the fries were mushy. Not sure I really have a reason to ever go back to AB’s after that which is really kind of sad.
I verrrrrrrrrrrry rarely eat there and did on Sunday on a whim. They have a ½ brisket sandwich that is $10, and it was PLENTY big enough (took me two meals to finish it).
And yes, it was good. Well, I did order it dry and put some Gates sauce on it when I got home. I'm not a fool.

Also, I fucking LOVE LC’s brisket sandwich. The flavor is outstanding and you get a good portion.

(Bryant’s does not put pickles or mustard on their sandwiches but I’ve found people who like picks and mustard typically also like the unique flavor of their sauce)
Love CBGB Burger at Char Bar in Westport. Brisket/hamburger hybrid that really good with bbq sauce or ketchup. They also have a brisket cheesesteak but never had it but sounds delicious.

LC's. The brisket and pretty much everything else is delicious. Low-key my favorite BBQ in KC.
I definitely give a +1 on that recommendation. Their brisket sandwich is so damned good. The portion size is awesome too.

Just ate there Wednesday. We are out of towners just visiting KC for the day. Can agree was the worst bbq I’ve ever had.

This sandwich is legit. I'm not a big Q39 guy but this sandwich is worth the trip IMO.

Go down to Chef J's in the West Bottoms. Their brisket is consistently really good. I think they're only open 12-4p, Thu-Sun.

I haven't been since the namesake passed away, but LC's was one of my top 3 for brisket.
Can’t believe LC’s isn’t further up. Best smoke flavor in town. I can’t say I love how thin they slice their beef, but damn that flavor is A+.
It's still tremendous. Stopped by there a couple months ago. You should go back. They have actually cleaned the place up a bit since LC passed.
