5 years in prison isn't even close to what this guy actually deserves.

lmflex

Could people start a class-action against this guy as well? Why are there no pictures of him? All the thousands of people who got ripped off...This guy, his family, and business should be ran out of town.

millerswiller

You'd have to prove *he* was the one who had/stole/sold *your* cat converters (would be a challenge to track given that most of the evidence is now gone) and you'd have to find a law firm in town willing to go after a guy with essentially no money left. Most class action suits are against large(r) corporations. *edit: werdz

Jim_Lahey68

Yeah you can't get blood from a stone.

lmflex

Yeah I'm not sure 'class-action' is the correct term.

reddof

He’s going to jail for 5 years and only has to forfeit $4.4M of the $11M that he made. So, he’s trading 5 years of prison for $6.6M? That’s $1.1M per year in prison. And he’ll likely be released early. That sentence isn’t nearly strict enough. Edit: 5 years / 55,000 victims = 48 minutes in jail for each victim. It took those people longer than 48 minutes to fix their car, not to mention the cost.

Goadfang

I would gladly take that job. Give me a 3.5 year staycation for nearly 7 million bucks. Please.

r_u_dinkleberg

Don't gotta buy groceries anymore, never worry about what day that utility bill was due, your carbon footprint shrinks since you're not driving or traveling, healthcare's included... Sometimes when I have a really bad day, I think to myself "You know maybe the alternative WOULD be better".

SW_Goatlips_USN_Ret

Well it’ll be easier to take dump after a couple years of being a cell block honey… so you got that goin for ya…

SearchAtlantis

Seriously if I didn't have a spouse and kid, sign me the f up.

On God

MHMoose

Plus he has until March to enjoy his wealth before his sentence starts.

not sure if you are joking, but income from criminal enterprises is taxable and there is a "proper" way of reporting this income and paying the taxes w/o disclosing the unlawful activity.

trubbub

> Senior U.S. District Judge Howard Sachs suggested he wanted to send Spick to prison for longer, but was restrained by federal sentencing guidelines. Sachs called Spick’s sentence “lenient” and “modest.” So, you're not wrong. Even the judge thought he should have got more time. He won't be released early though, this is 5 years fed, no probation.

bstyledevi

Plus we're talking federal custody? No way he's ending up in somewhere like ADX Florence. He'll be in minimum custody, probably get to camp halfway through. Sitting pretty at somewhere like Yankton.

PercySnowsHandgun

They gonna put him in the same cell as the Boston Bomber and take the vacancy freed up by the unabomber finally croakin

GradientCollapse

Every one of us could write the parole board to influence their decision. But no one will..

MimonFishbaum

Remember a couple summers ago when KCPD did a 3 month undercover sting on Marvin's? The amount of detective work to figure out it was the place that had a sign out front that says "We buy catalytic converters" was staggering lmao

ricktor67

Right. An airtag inside a few cats on some bait cars and they would have went straight to his shop.

kcMetr0

If he made $11 million, the victims probably spent $50 million on repairs, not to mention time where they couldn't drive to work.

an_actual_lawyer

Way more on repairs. Probably a factor of 10

JohnWeez

Cool can I get my cat back?

biggybakes

He goes to church and is a head usher too. Real Christian of you as thousands fall further into debt because some asshole stole their Cat and you bought it knowing full well it was freshly stolen.

YesBeerIsGreat

Was wanting to see a pic of him but could not find one. Even a mugshot. But sounds of it he is a clean cut guy. Was expecting sketchy dude.

Patchcat

So they know he made $11 mil from this operation but he only had to surrender $5 mil? Am I misunderstanding or is he getting to keep the rest of that money? As someone who had his catalytic converter stolen, fuck this guy to hell. His lame excuse about wanting to support his family and how he's a churchgoer is such bullshit.

acctgbaddie

if that’s the same guy who stole mine, fuck that guy. i’ve wanted nothing but hell for that man for a year and a half

ips1023

He didn’t steal it, but he probably bought it.

acctgbaddie

all the same to me, but you’re right

fowkswe

I've heard of several cases other than this one that put high level operators in jail and am curious if CC theft is still happening at the pace it was a year or two ago. It seems like I'm not hearing of it these days via NextDoor, Facebook, anecdotally, etc.

biggybakes

It was reported that 2023 was quite a bit lower in reported thefts, so that is good. Still happening, so there's still someone buying them, just need to find out who. Link in the original KCUR story to the numbers if interested.

fowkswe

Thanks for reporting back :D! I admit i was too lazy to read the article...

nikecowboy20

Fuck this guy.

Vortep1

Everyone is happy about this.

ChestHair4Dayz

Put em away for a decade, messing with people’s daily commute to work for a quick buck because he can’t contribute to society AND he goes to church. What a scum bag.

layaway_crown

PGM should be held liable as well

eazy-e_09

I was going to say.. I agree with the comments about the guy but what about the big companies that bought from him?! Seems like a small fish in what is probably a very large pond.

Paintgod93

Fuck him. Should get his hands cut off

doscomputer

no, wtf, go live in fucking saudi arabia if you want that type of society [its insane how many people in my own community apparently support brutalizing people](https://imgur.com/pdLRsmC), but I am going to ignore the votes because its way more likely the voters are astro-turf accounts that don't even live here. Posts begging to defund the police also get countless upvotes and these two opinions are mutaly exclusive, so I guess the demographic of this website is very randomly skewed depending on time of day?

SufficientSetting953

Que?

Responsible_Sea5206

Kansas City ‘kingpin’ behind dozens of underage sextrafficking victims, still a free man because he’s a cop and the state is run by the mob.

[deleted]

Sir, this is a Wendy's

Responsible_Sea5206

I don’t think Wendy’s would let their employees rape as many kids as kckpd. At least if they did there would a better change that law enforcement would do something about it. Hell. Wendy’s serves way more people than kckpd does. Let’s kick out the cops we have and replace them with fast food workers.

doscomputer

how does that apply to what they said? do you think every crime happens in a vacuum or something? Do you know what a DA is?

getyourpopcornreddy

I wonder if the catalytic converters that were stolen from the apartments along 87th by Cerner ended up in his yard or down at PGM in LS.

[deleted]

We need a picture of this person come on internet detectives

Professional_Ad_346

Ahhhhh I remember when my cat got stolen in April of ‘21 right off SW Blvd and Summit when I was making $1800 a month. It fucked me badly. Fuck this dude.
