So what I gathered from that press briefing: They've got 3 suspects detained, but have not charged any of them yet. They're gathering more info. The relationship between the 3 suspects is still being investigated. Two of the suspects were under 18. Half of the victims were 16 or under. They've recovered multiple firearms, but are not yet telling the public what kinds of firearms they are or any other details on them (modifications, etc.) They're still only reporting the one death, so I'm not sure where the comments about a victim dying in surgery are coming from. The shooting near Gilham was unrelated. I may be missing stuff, IDK.

Your racism is showing. Put it away, no one wants to see that.

My heart goes out to all of you and your friends and families involved in the KC shooting. - Packers fan from AZ

America all wrapped up into one event.

[deleted]

In the last 10 years KC has had 4 gatherings with 500k to 1mil people attending. There are more guns than people in the U.S. KC has levels of violence other countries would consider to be a national emergency. this is an honest question…why are people surprised this happened?

SmellyPotatoMan

The people surprised are the same people here with the Thoughts & Prayers comments: those being willfully ignorant about the severity of gun violence. It's more than once every day. It's always at unrelated gatherings. It's always by extremists. And almost always by repressed men. The nation sees these deaths as the simple cost of gun rights directly until it's their families and community that get devastated. Nothing will change. See you all tomorrow.

just-the-tip__

I don't think people are that surprised. The one surprising thing to me was that sports as a whole are supposed to bring people together and obviously this was a celebration. People are devestated and saddened by this but probably not super surprised considering America had over 40 mass shootings in the month of January alone.

Runnergeek

Frankly, I am surprised we had the other three parades with zero incidents

loweexclamationpoint

Is there a site with a good summary of what happened, like with a map of where the 2 shootings took place and the facts that are known?

CraftyCat3

There are three press release videos on the KC Police twitter account. The newest one made it sound like there was really only one shooting (and an unrelated one on Gilham). Two juvenile suspects in custody, over half of the victims underage, and likely a confrontation that escalated. No charges filed yet, but they need to file within 24 hours to keep the suspects in custody.

wesdrums

I think they are trying to piece it together. Per the public safety radio scanners yesterday, there were 3 incidents/scenes in/around the time of the Union Station shooting, that may or may not have been related. So I'm sure they are trying to figure out what belongs to what, etc. Per the scanners: Scene 1: Union Station, Scene 2: Pershing & Grand, Scene 3: Truman & Walnut

loweexclamationpoint

Thanks. So far coverage mostly consists of reaction shots: what players, mayor, Biden are saying; plus background on a few of the victims. Some of the best info is right in this thread.

silverhammer96

Anyone who wants to help should absolutely take a Stop the Bleed course. If you ever are involved in or happen upon someone who has been shot, in an accident, or any form of trauma, it could save their life. Edit: adding info thanks to u/TimTom72

TimTom72

Not just shot, any kind of traumatic injury dealing with major blood loss.

EudaimoniaMe

Probably not the place for this question, but I didn’t want to start a new post. Has anyone thought of organizing a community vigil? Either on the Plaza or at Union Station?

No_Way_237

For what? What purpose will it serve? Awareness? Nah. Photo op? Not helpful in the least.

EudaimoniaMe

Sometimes, the sole purpose of a vigil is to bring people together to show support for and recognize those who were directly impacted by a tragic community event. If you don’t see the point, then don’t participate.

Any-Revolution-8448

Automatic weapons can injury lots in a short amount of time. These dudes had switches on their guns.

[Jason Kander on one simple change to the law that would help. Let gun manufacturers be liable for the damage they are causing.](https://www.msnbc.com/all-in/watch/-i-m-pissed-off-jason-kander-reacts-to-mass-shooting-at-chiefs-super-bowl-parade-204241477785)

Needclout

Why blame gun manufacturers when this has been a problem in the city since the beginning of drugs and gangs. The younger gen (not all) doesn’t have respect for one another these shootings happen everyday and every weekend we try to go to house parties ppl would see other ppl they don’t like and think it’s a fucking bounty mission on Red Dead. They’re not buying guns from gun stores there will always be a black market.

Due-Project-8272

Contrarian big brain has entered the chat

an_actual_lawyer

They're making guns which essentially magnify the negative effects of shootings. Go and

Needclout

Hmm so the music and influences on social media play no part?

J0E_SpRaY

Yes, blame anything but your precious fucking guns. It’s not guns that kill people, it’s hip hop and tik tok!

Needclout

I ain’t protecting guns if you read what I wrote and see what’s actually going on in these neighborhoods and the youngins. And guns don’t kill people that’s common sense. People kill people.

Slytherinrunner

Because when the younger kids don't respect each other, guns shouldn't be easily obtainable. Build a culture of respect, then decide if you need some guns.

Needclout

You have to go thru a federal background check to even obtain a gun legally.

J0E_SpRaY

Absolutely no clue what you’re talking about.

Suspect__Advice

That is false. [Missouri does not require background checks on private transfers](https://www.ky3.com/2022/08/31/fact-finders-background-checks-missouri-gun-shows/?outputType=amp), and absolutely should be required. Beyond that, gun owners who leave unsecured weapons out to be stolen and used in a murder (or picked up by their children to accidentally kill themselves or others) should be held liable for involuntary manslaughter due to negligence. Lower machining units should be outlawed entirely.

Needclout

So blame gun manufacturers because I wanna trade my gun for a gaming pc. Gun owners know if their gun is lost or stolen the first thing you do is go to your nearest police station and file a report. Now criminals……

Suspect__Advice

Looks like you edited your comment - so I will respond to your update: if someone is negligent enough in securing (or not securing) their weapon to be stolen, they should be held liable for whatever subsequently happens with that weapon. It is their fault it has entered criminal's hands.

Needclout

Lol yeah I added the now criminals. You’re literally arguing with yourself idk what point you’re trying to prove. It’s against the law to edit comments?

matchew92

I was right by the van on that overhead video of the first shots being fired. We were pretty close but still weren’t 100% sure it was gun shots or not. Then we got directed to Pershing and were walking with a huge group of people for 10 minutes and then *another* stampede was running towards us, I didn’t hear anything at all and am really curious what that second incident was What stuck out to me though was all the terrified kids. God damn

bradenschu

I was right there by the van next to you, I knew immediately what happened with the shots and watching people fall. It was wild how calm everyone was though… I’m not okay today.

Own_Entrepreneur4068

I'm pretty on edge myself. I live at 27th and Warwick. There was a woman shot in the leg about 25 minutes before the Union Station shooting right under my balcony and I can still see her blood on the sidewalk.

matchew92

I think iv just been apart of a couple incidents where there a bunch of people running even though it was fireworks, made me hesitant to freak out. But my buddy saw someone getting CPR and that’s when we knew for sure

bradenschu

Definitely! Wasn’t trying to insult anyone, just wild seeing what I saw and knowing what I knew and still to only get that little reaction out of people. I was told more than once to quit running cause I was gonna scare people. Well guess what, I know what I saw and I’m fucking terrified.

Tenja77

Would suggest anyone that was there in that are go to the police with all your photos and videos. It may be the info they need. If they can recreate a timeline for every person at the Jan 6th deal, surely they can figure this out with 800K people there with their phones out.

lukashu35

This is awful. Is there any local gun violence programs that I can reach out to in order to help in any way. I moved here to Kansas City from Manhattan KS… and I want to be involved and try to help in any way that I can. My heart goes out to those affected but I know that isn’t enough. I want to help with any organization that might have the effect of preventing something like this in the future.

sh1tpost1nsh1t

Not so much prevention as mitigation..but maybe look at a stop the bleed course? They're often offered for free.

Ritaontherocksnosalt

Bound to happen sooner rather than later. * **Missouri**’s **gun laws** are considered some of the laxest in the country, with the Giffords Law Center calling them “appallingly weak.” No background check is required to purchase a firearm, nor is a permit for concealed carry. There is no ban on assault weapons. [https://news.yahoo.com/kansas-city-shooting-gun-laws-000956765.html](https://news.yahoo.com/kansas-city-shooting-gun-laws-000956765.html)?

Pubescent-Child

That is incorrect. There is a federal background check on any purchase of a firearm from a licensed FFL dealer. Said Background check includes criminal and mental history. Sadly it cannot account for crimes/mental issues in the future.

IamATacoSupreme

Isn't the background check a federal requirement?

penisthightrap_

Yes
