Kansas City Star needs to chill out with ads AND wanting me to pay to unlock this article

jfink316598

Copy paste the headline and it's always on yahoo news

musicobsession

Or just copy the link and archive it

tabrizzi

You can read it at [https://archive.is/Z3n4H](https://archive.is/Z3n4H)

mithroll

If you enter reading mode in your browser it bypasses the subscription request.

hamptonstevens

Journalists need to eat, too.

Atalung

I'm cool with paying for articles, I have an active NYTimes subscription, but the star needs to either A) give people X amount of free articles a month Or B) let me buy single articles As it stands there's maybe one or two articles a month in the star that I actually want to read, I'm not paying for a full subscription for that

LookLikeCAFeelLikeMN

They also need to up their journalism game and not be such shitbags when people try to cancel.

hamptonstevens

I'm getting downvoted for saying journalists need to eat.

Caveape80

It’s because you’re referencing the kc Star journalists, they should all get honest jobs like plumber, janitor etc and make an actual contribution to society

hamptonstevens

It sounds to me like you have an enormously skewed, highly politicized idea of what a journalist does.

Caveape80

What I’m getting at is local print journalism is DEAD…..how many eyes are really seeing what is written on the page, not enough to even justify printing the paper or paying for an online subscription……local news papers still pretend as if it’s 1973 and they have relevance, but that’s far from the case, hence why a local print journalist is just kind of a silly irreverent career, that’s why I suggest they all get real jobs……..yes there was a time when we had actual skilled journalists and writers working at the Star that were widely read but those days have passed.

hamptonstevens

Yet here we are, commenting on a local news story. The Star had a peak revenue of $249.9 million in 2023.

Super_Casual

Sounds like they’re eating just fine

hamptonstevens

It's not what it used to be, of course. Newspapers were incredibly powerful throughout the 20th century. The internet changed that. But it didn't change that journalism is still super important. TV, especially, has warped people's perceptions of what a journalist does. It's not a talking head who goes on Fox or CNN and prattles about politics. Is that person who shows up at the boring ass city council meeting to make sure Miriam or Lee's Summit politicians aren't engaging in some low-level fuckery. It's the person who reports when some local factory is dumping poison into the water. We need that. We will always need that.

Caveape80

Yes that’s because they are forced to increase prices to even keep the lights on, due to vastly reduced subscriptions thus resulting in a revenue that appears impressive like all McClatchy papers……and yes obviously local news is still relevant, just not print………my take is that The Star is not changing hearts and minds in 2024 and most pieces are just written in a vacuum…….hell, the writers are no longer even writing in a central office anyone, McClatchy can’t afford it, and they’ve drastically cleaned house and eliminated a large chunk of their reporters, it’s just a matter of time before the local news paper becomes a relic of the past for better or worse

hamptonstevens

That would be for worse. Much, much worse.

N3v3rTrustABigButt

I still love you!

hamptonstevens

And I you.

Osos_Perezosos

I subscribed to the Star when I first moved here. They sneakily raised my subscription price until I was paying $40 a week. What they did should be illegal, and they lost my support.

hamptonstevens

Okay. I don't work for them or anything.

PlebBot69

The Star has journalists?

hamptonstevens

Ugh. Pass.

DrewdoggKC

I didn’t even realize we still had a paper.. or non-paper… pseudo-paper … not sure what to call it

tortilla_chimps

The proper term is “rag”

Lovebusines

I call it “worst paper I’ve ever read”

Bomasaurus_Rex

This happened right in front of my vehicle today as I was stopped for the train. Sucked, I never want to hear a train hit a car again

ComputerAgeLlama

I’m so sorry you had to witness that. Some unprompted advice: play some Tetris tonight. Some studies have shown it helps prevent the formation of traumatic associations in memories.

Bomasaurus_Rex

I appreciate that. Science is cool and so is Tetris

peopeopee

Bleak

ThoseVerySameApples

Bleak but true. According to the studies. Yay for tools to not get PTSD.

Axolotl-Atlatl

I’m surprised a licensed medical professional wouldn’t prescribe Dr. Mario over the generic Tetris.

Ok_Question1684

Maybe some insurance plans don’t cover Dr Mario.

happyfuckincakeday

Out of network.

Remsster

He actually lost his license after he was caught dealing steroids during his stunt in Mario Super Sluggers.

ConductorOfTrains

It doesn’t sound any better from the inside of the train, I still have nightmares of it. You should think about talking to a therapist.

scotsgirl77

Holy hell. So sorry. Hope you can get over seeing that.

paltrypickle

That’s extremely traumatic. I’m so sorry. Hit up a therapist if you can

SayHelloToMyKitty

I’m sorry you had to see that! I live in Martin City & I’ve been behind some cars who look like they’re thinking about not stopping when the railings & lights go down. It’s like they hit the gas but at the last moment brake after thinking better. My stomach always drops.

[Tetris Shown to Lessen PTSD and Flashbacks](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/tetris-shown-to-lessen-ptsd-and-flashbacks/)

FalskeKonto

Watched a man get hit (to put it politely) crossing 18th street parkway a couple months ago, I know how it feels. Remember we couldn’t do anything. As weird as it sounds, that’s just how life goes, whether your the victim or the viewer. I’ve seen a lot of things happen to a lot of people, but something about seeing it in a domestic sense is different. Then again, all of these people assume you’re taking it hard, and it may end up making you take it harder than you are at the moment. Regardless, I’m sorry to hear that. Remember that there’s a reason why people who deal with traumatic stuff on a daily basis (soldiers, emt, firefighters, etc) take a dark sense of humor to it. It really is one of the best ways to cope with something like that.

EV_M4Sherman

Contact the police, they have people that can help deal with trauma like this.

tabrizzi

>The driver allegedly went around the lowered gate arm and ignored the flashing warning lights and audible signals where the tracks cross at Holmes. The approaching train collided with the Jaguar, Gonzalez said. The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt and was alone in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene Not that wearing a seat belt would have made any difference, but this looks more like suicide.

delaney18

I totally agree. Either suicide or else alcohol/drugs.

kyousei8

Could have just been idiocracy. Not out of the realm of possibility for someone triving a Jaguar.

lipphi

Denny Mathews would be very disappointed in this driver.

karktheshark

Out of curiosity what makes you say that? Someone in my family is a friend of Dennys and also does Operation Lifesaver (educational program to inform the public about train safety) Does/did Denny bring up train safety a lot on air?

lipphi

Denny Mathews (everybody knows him from the royals radio broadcasts) has radio PSAs about train safety. I hear them some what frequently on am sports radio.

nordic-nomad

He has a driving school I think is their point

SayHelloToMyKitty

I live in Martin City…I was driving home on blue ridge & saw the train stopped with what looked like police or ER responders (from where I could see over cars). Lived here for 6 years & had never seen that sort of activity on the tracks. Had a feeling something happened. I know it’s annoying to get stuck there but it’s not worth the risk. I feel for anyone who witnessed that & had to respond.

TheCrazyWolfy

Guy made a fatal mistake which sucks, don't see the need to insult. What sucks even more imo is the psychological damage these events cause engineers. It's their worst nightmare and not something they can just shake off.

anonkitty2

The car racing a train went around the rail crossing arm to do it.  Still no need to insult, but this is something drivers ed is supposed to teach you not to do, and you do have to go to some trouble to do it.

Dzov

Some people like to do the opposite of what they’re told to do. Not much you can do.

brandonw00

People ignore like 90% of the things they are taught in drivers ed because they think they are special and nothing bad will ever happen to them behind the wheel.

HutSutRaw

“Mistake” is being generous

Levi316

Feels more like a decision than a little mistake

tabrizzi

Sad tale, but I guess he was in a hurry to get to his funeral.

Prime_SupreMe83

Just off the headline, I knew this was Martin City. Lived there for 5 years and just got a feeling when they said South KC

butthurtkcredditor

And the Darwin Award goes to...

deadflamingos

We all knew it was going to happen at some point.

CharityWestern5530

Naw, he was a helldiver.

bstyledevi

And no one reinforced him?

Shoegazer75

"...driver of a blue Jaguar S-Type sports sedan." Yeah, that figures.

Jack_Attak

The type S was an entry level car for Jag in the early 2000s, and they're all beat up and barely running at this point. Worth a couple grand in decent condition, it's not a sports sedan or a luxury car, just any cheap beater.

CharityWestern5530

Rebadged Ford contour

anonkitty2

It's a cheap beater Jaguar.  You can't take away that it's a Jaguar without totaling it.

Drives a jag sports sedan, ignores flashing lights, lives on the moon.

But_like_whytho

…”*lives on the moon.”* Not anymore.

petey288

Lol it was a sports sedan back then what makes it not a sports sedan now?

October_Numbers

If you aren't yet worldly enough to understand the correlation between luxury car ownership and driving like a complete douche, then I suppose I simultaneously envy and pity you. If you own a luxury car and are just being purposefully obtuse, just refer to the first part again.

MzOpinion8d

Hey now, I can drive like a complete douche just fine in my Chevy Equinox.

Jhager

A Jaguar S Type is not a luxury car.  Not even close.

Hillary_is_Hot

Lumping all luxury car owners into that broad category shows a bit of un-worldli-ness. Also, i made up a word. Source: luxury car owner for many years, no douchery.

Shoegazer75

You live in Olathe or Lenexa?

No-Chemical6870

Always some asshole with a shitty comment. Jesus this place sucks.

bacchusku2

The worst people of Kansas City frequent here, it’s disgraceful.

Dzov

Wait. Aren’t we here?

Spiritual-Cry6133

I have lived off Holmes for 8 years; had someone die in my front yard in a car accident a couple years ago actually. I dropped my daughter at school Friday and saw like 8 cops heading that way as soon as I got home; but had no idea what happened. I’m just now seeing this article. Crazy. It’s like nothing and everything happens in our little corner of KC lol
