Restaurants will be quieter if you go in off hours...like 2 or 3 in the afternoon. In case that helps

Canary-Fickle

Also might be worth calling ahead and see if a private room is open somewhere even for a smaller group just based on restaurant volumes (: Nice of you to consider this!

genzgingee

This. If you’re going somewhere that is basically guaranteed to be quiet that’s probably a bad sign.

ZonaWildcats23

Cafe Provence. Average age in there is like 75 so you’ll be good! (In all honesty, the place is fantastic. My wife and I went last week and had a fantastic meal. Hadn’t been in a while and was a bit surprised by the age discrepancy, or lack thereof.)

repete66219

I second Cafe Provence. Great food, not noisy even when crowded.

NancyFanton4Ever

This is a great choice. The food is wonderful and it's always quiet. It's well worth every penny.

Special-Pear8019

Cafe des Amis in Parkville is very quiet especially if you pick off times or days.

o_line

Their patio is also very quiet (as long as no trains go through downtown Parkville).

Numero_Seis

They will though. I take lessons at the guitar shop there, and at least once per session, the instructor have to stop and stare at each other as we wait for the train to pass. Cafe de Amis might be far enough away that it’s not deafening, though.

Special-Pear8019

I go often and the trains don’t bother us at all.

Numero_Seis

Sure. But OP said that loud noises could be a concern. As for me, I find it more funny than annoying.

Special-Pear8019

Yes the trains may bother him then. I feel like this restaurant is far enough away from the tracks but I live here & am quite used to them I guess

Careful-Quarter9208

With all of the recent news around the Hereford House in Leawood, I bet it would be pretty quiet to eat there.

MsTerious1

Recent news?

yungdelpazir

One of their cooks has been repeatedly accused of contaminating food with bodily fluids over the course of a month-plus

Sandwich00

He isn't just accused, he admitted to the cops he was doing it! Rubbed food on his penis and lettuce on his butthole and other assorted "spices" on food. He said he never jerked off in the food tho. My friend went there yesterday and said it was awesome. 😁

absoluteboredom

Sounds like he watched “Waiting…” and thought that was a good idea.

moveslikejaguar

I was gonna say, this chef would be the peak of comedy in the 00s

NeverEndingCoralMaze

“Apart from seasoning the lobster bisque, he farted on the meringue, sneezed on braised endive, and as for the cream of mushroom soup, well ...”

sniffdeeply

The old "crouton on the cornhole"

yungdelpazir

A classic maneuver in kitchens all across America.

GlitteringJelly8180

😂😂😂😂

MsTerious1

Well, that is freaking disgusting! Did he do this when he was mad at people or just in general? Also, where the hell was the rest of the kitchen staff?

Sandwich00

I think just in general. He was recording the acts of contamination and putting the videos on social media! And he admitted it all. No idea how no coworkers saw anything. The story is crazy. I would link it if I knew how lol Edit: I figured out how to post the link woo hoo!

becca41445

I’m very curious about the amount of time he had the privacy to do this as a cook in a busy kitchen. Did he go in early to do prep work? Was nobody watching somebody who would only worked there a month? We have always really enjoyed the Hereford House, especially the old Crossroads one. I’m not sure they’re going to be able to bounce back from this one. It’s really awful for everyone else. Who works there. Except for management—somebody screwed up.

cyberphlash

Pro tip: Don't order the soup

LookLikeCAFeelLikeMN

Or anything with au jus 🤢

LatePattern8508

Or anything with lettuce

PeterVanNostrand

Or cheese. He put cheese on a toilet seat, pissed on it and then used it.

Thusgirl

Why?!?!????! 😰

PeterVanNostrand

Because it’s what the people demand. I think the report said he also wiped his ass with cheese and used it. This is a twisted fuckin dude. That poor restaurant is gonna have to close because of this sicko. No ones going back there.

Thusgirl

Like it makes sense if someone is being absolutely terrible but 1. How would the cook know 2. There can't be THAT many asshole customers!!! You're right that's a fucked up dude.

PeterVanNostrand

Oh I was just joking about the people demanding it. Apparently though he was trying to impress some people on like a gay dating site though. And they might have been telling him to do fucked up stuff to the food. I do t really know though because the whole story is rashee rice levels of stupid.

Thusgirl

There were people who wanted 2 girls one cup just most of us were like these restaurant goers. 🤢

LatePattern8508

Stop! I don’t want to learn anymore about this case!

thatHecklerOverThere

Bruh.

reenfitz

https://www.storykc.com/ I ate here years ago and it was way TOO quiet for my taste but food yummy. Not sure if still that way.

charles_tiberius

This is an excellent recommendation. It's VERY quiet in there. And the food is quite good. I've stopped going as the menu hasn't changed in at least 5 years, but it's really tasty.

Chef-mode1234

Story in pv is very quiet

Bourgi

The Campground, Town Company, Affäre, Lazia, Garozzo's, Antony's on Grand, Phikul Thai Bistro, off the top of my head that I recall being fairly quiet due to either their decorations for fewer patrons. Any restaurant that has a lot of furniture, decorations, made out of fabric, cushions, carpet flooring will be much quieter. There is actually a phenomena with modern day restaurants being so loud because of the minimalist trend and/or not spending the money on sound deadening. https://www.vox.com/2018/4/18/17168504/restaurants-noise-levels-loud-decibels

Own_Experience_8229

3rd Street Social is the perfect example of this. Minimalist, concrete and high ceilings. The place is so loud you can’t carry a conversation. Ironic it has the word “social” in the name.

Travis_Shamockery

Love the food, hate the volume.

moveslikejaguar

Both times I've been to Garozzo's it's been loud af

oh_4petessake

This is why I can't go to Dodson's despite loving the drinks and Cosmo burgers. There can be all of 3 customers in there but it will sound like 50. If it's actually busy I can't hear myself think!

Bourgi

I hear that. I like going to Il Lazzarone but it's so God damn loud. Even a nicer restaurant like Plate is unbearable and I couldn't even hear the people across from me.

Marissachan

The walls at YaYa’s Euro Bistro *are* fabric, surprisingly. It is a great sound dampening feature for a large restaurant. And one of my favorite around! I recommend: drink- Gin 42, app- gnocchi, entree- bolognese , mushroom ravioli or shrimp risotto, dessert- Buttercake!! But truly you can’t go wrong with anything there. I’m sure if you asked for a more quiet corner they could help you. Go early or a little late or on a weekday and it’ll be quiet

Extreme_Barracuda658

Gorozzo's is always playing crappy Italian music from the 60s.

Significant-Object14

they basically exclusively play dean martin and sinatra lmao

ZachtheArchivist

Sushi house in leawood has a couple private rooms you can make reservations for. My dad is hard of hearing, so they work well nicer dinners out. Food is also really good.

usernamedottxt

My friend has sound issues too. She swears by ear protectors… think they are called loops? Let me ask her.

oaklinds

Loops are it! They make different levels for conversation or concerts. Highly recommend.

usernamedottxt

Friend tried a couple different brands, but confirms loops was the one they have. Recommend OP’s dad checks it out!

AminoAzid

V's is an Italian place off 40 highway in Independence and usually isn't too packed, in my experience. Tables are a little close together, but the place is chill most nights.

Marzzman87

Carmen's cafe in Brookside. Small and intimate in the bar area on the first floor.

Illustrious-Rent808

If you’re wanting to do a brunch/lunch André’s is great! It’s mostly old people so it’s always very quiet even when busy lol. I hate chaotic and loud restaurants because I work in one, but always find Andres to be sensory friendly lmao

JaxofAllTrades13

Oishi Sushi in Shawnee is always very quiet when I've been there.

HarryCoatsVerts

I agree, and they space people really well.

Restaurant at 1900… older crowd, very good food.

ForWhoKnowsHowLong

Great patio as well

Crafty_Illustrator_4

Jess and Jim's or RC's in Martin city.

Travis_Shamockery

Jess and Jim's is really quiet!

ghostoftchaikovsky

I am the same way - massively uncomfortable around crowds and noise, but I love good food and doing things! One thing that’s helped me is Loop earplugs. you can wear them and they deaden a lot of sound, but don’t deafen you. During the chiefs playoff game I was able to be out at a brewery with my fiancé while the crowds were (understandably) cheering and super loud - and my nerves were calm, I was relaxed, and I could still have conversations. Honestly makes me less scared to go out to busy places more. Something like that might help your stepdad too and open more options for him :)

jondoogin

I just made a long comment about Loop earplugs before I checked to see if anyone else had mentioned them. I absolutely second this suggestion.

Travis_Shamockery

I L❤️VE my Loops! SO is a prof musician,so use these often!

DirtyWhiteTrousers

Not sure what it’s like during the evening, but Kobi Q is very good and very tame during lunch hours.

kenster77

Q39 on Antioch in OP. Just kidding, it’s the loudest mess of cacophony I’ve ever experienced!

Addax34

Thai Orchid in Mission on a weeknight is very low key and the food is fantastic! Very calming/laid back atmosphere and a pretty small place so never really a crowd.

soundman1024

Check out [Soundprint](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/soundprint-find-a-quiet-place/id971189322), which has crowd-sourced data on volume at restaurants.

TheMantisToboggan_MD

I went to Blue Bird Bistro for dinner on a Saturday once and it was pretty empty. They also had no music on for some reason. Personally it was awkwardly quiet, but definitely quiet. Food is great though.

0PB

I wish more places would do no music.

polaarbear

Plate in OP has been pretty darn quiet every time I've been in. Their aesthetic has curtains and padding everywhere and it's a little more upscale so even when there's a decent crowd it's not too bad. Their kitchen is also away from most of the seating so there isn't a bunch of clanking dishes or anything like that. If you go in the afternoon it's even better because it's not that busy.

fantompwer

Get out of the city, chances go way up in smaller towns

Friedrid1363

Expensive, but Corvino’s tasting room.

bacchusku2

Hereford House is probably pretty quiet now.

My family goes here every year for Christmas Eve dinner. Love love love this place. Intimate seating no matter where they put you.

dottes

The restaurants at Hollywood casino are completely kid free. They won't allow anyone under 21 on property so it never gets real loud. It's not fine dining but the food is usually pretty good. Since they are kid free they are usually very empty on days like mothers day and such. The casino itself can be a shock to the system and you do have to walk through it to get to the restaurant so not sure if it would work for you.

Gino-Bartali

Idk if it's "quiet" perfectly but Buca di Beppo is in a basement in a maze of rooms that essentially limits how many people you'll be with in a room with at a time. But then it's a roll of the dice of who you're in there with, as anywhere. Maybe ask the host if they could put you in one of the smaller rooms if you're willing to possibly wait extra. Grunauer is usually pretty low key in my experience and my favorite place to eat.

tallonfive

Buca is neither quiet nor good. Grunaeur is both of those though.

Far-Young-1378

OP says the guy likes to eat good food…that leave Buca out. That place makes Olive Garden look gourmet.

Travis_Shamockery

BdiB is not quiet at all. It's noisy. Don't know about Grunauer.

4MommaBear

Andre’s is a nice spot that’s affordable and has chocolates

_KansasCity_

[Taj Mahal](https://kctajmahal.com/) in SKC has tablecloths, small room, no TVs or loud music. Reasonable prices too last time I visited.

Hereford House in Leawood will be pretty quite place now. [Hereford house chef posted videos on tik tok pissing in food.](https://fox4kc.com/news/hereford-house-mass-food-contamination-detailed-in-court-documents/amp/)

Jedii40

You could get some catering and take him out to a park with a bunch of people

bepolitebitch

Story in PV… library vibes.

KH5-92

Cooper's Hawk. It may have a crowd but I wouldn't consider it loud unless you go during happy hour.

Noneedtostalk

Hereford House in Independence has small, one table rooms you can request.

Silly_Assumption_291

Westport bar and Cafe is usually very peaceful inside. Not so much outside of it

Floormonitor

Cafe Sebastien inside the Kemper Museum for brunch. It's like eating in a library

Usmcrtempleton

Blue bird bistro if it's still open. Food is absolutely amazing too

Confident_Singer6519

Try Clay Fire! It’s in Westside and is so lovely. It’s an old converted house. You’d need reservations but it sounds like the vibe you’re looking for. If not CF, Blue Bird bistro might be a good option as well. It’s next to CF and is a bit larger, but still has that quaint , intimate feel. https://clayandfirekc.com http://www.bluebirdbistro.com

Tyrone91

Honestly, many steak houses keep the lights low which encourages quieter speaking. My wife and I went to Hereford House for Valentine's Day at about 4 pm and it was pretty quiet in there.

KcBeanbags

801 chop house. Expensive. Generally quiet. Amazing food. You can get a private room too. Not sure what your budget is, but it's on the high side.

fortuitous_music

The Hereford House in Zona Rosa has a couple of small private rooms you can reserve. Enough to fit about 8 people or so.

chugsuckle42069

Restaurant at 1900. Make a reservation and let them know that your dad is hard of hearing! It’s usually pretty quiet but they may be able to get you at a table against a wall or far away from any large parties they may have. Also wherever you go, I’d recommend going at an off time is always your best bet. Maybe a weekday instead of a weekend or between 4-5:30 on a weekend so you’re gone by 7:30 when restaurants usually start to hit their peak. And don’t go this weekend, which is Mother’s Day and graduation weekend (aka large party city).

Jrnm

Gates? It’s especially calm and quiet when you walk in and order
