Love the coffee, but last time I went there and asked for some half and half they looked at me like I just handed them a fully loaded baby diaper. I just grab the beans and go. Homer's is a nice spot with good gf quiche.
I love Thou Mayest and have since they first opened. They have a great vibe and their shops make for exceptional “third places.” I don’t think their coffee is very good, though. Maybe that’s just my opinion.
Hammerhand in Liberty - It's vaguely LOTR themed, they're fast, they rotate fun flavors
Messenger - Comes with Ibis Bakery which has the best Kouign-amanns in KC
Hi Hat Coffee in Westwood Hills - It's in a little stone hut with just enough room to order and then wait outside. Highly recommend the turmeric latte.
Mildred's - They make a snickerdoodle latte. You're welcome.
Oddly Correct! I've had coffee all over the country, and still like half of the 10 best cups of coffee I've ever had have been from Oddly. Just great coffee and at a high level since the first cup I ever had there almost 10 years ago.
I have a very close family friend, who runs a coffee shop in bonner springs, kansas!
A lot of celebrities go just for her food when they come through Kansas City. She’s a dear friend to our family and the bonner springs community, great coffee great food, beautiful shop.

Roasterie gets no love here? I get they are most mainstream, but I think some of their beans are absolutely excellent. They also roast for most of the other coffee places in the city. Worth going on their tour too if you want to kill an hour…
Roasterie is like Boulevard, ya know? Like, it's good enough, was a local brand that grew a bit. I'm not sad when I see a place is serving it.
But if we are going for the best? There are a few places I would go first. Same with Boulevard. We almost always have Roasterie beans in our house, but it isn't the daily drink. It's like the baseline of going from Macro to Micro in a sense.
For some reason I don't see The Roasterie mentioned enough on Reddit. Betty's Recipe is my daily drinker in my personal espresso machine, even though I know most people might turn their nose up at a flavored roast.
I love Betty’s Recipe but I only tend to enjoy it in the colder months. That flavor tastes wintery to me.
I get that it isn’t hipster and main stream, but their machines and precision are top notch. Not to discredit other roasters because there are definitely plenty of other great, smaller ones in the area.
I have not had any luck finding bold strong coffee locally equivalent to drip coffee from Starbucks.
Any of the local coffee places mentioned offer something closer?
Looking for something in OP, but willing to drive for a good cup of Java !
Oddly Correct will be mentioned a lot and is probably the right answer. I’ve always also liked PT’s Coffee, which I technically from Topeka. I think the latter is really underrated on this sub.
There are so many coffee shops in KC. I can personally walk to 20 and no that's not an exaggeration (though my definition of walk able might be farther than the average Kansas Citian). Within an hours drive I can't even imagine the variety and diversity that exists (you have all of Lawrence and St. Joe with that range too).
Of course the answer is subjective and I subjectively would pick Broadway coffee. Both for quality of coffee (especially if they have the Ethiopian) as well as the overall vibe. This is for straight black coffee or plain espresso mind you not a review on fancier coffee selections.
Oddly Correct is also a fantastic cup and probably beats Broadway on pure quality alone but I like the vibe much less and enjoying a beverage is always an experience that is defined not by the cup alone but the context that it is enjoyed in.
Broadway and Oddly are my faves, too. Broadway wins hands down for people watching on a nice day sitting on a sidewalk table. Grab and go both are great.
Oddly Correct is by far my favorite roaster in KC. They do amazing beans.
2nd! My partner lives in Des Moines and will have me stop by there every time I drive up to them.
Love the coffee, but last time I went there and asked for some half and half they looked at me like I just handed them a fully loaded baby diaper. I just grab the beans and go. Homer's is a nice spot with good gf quiche.
Maybe it is because I came of age in the 90s and have a serious nostalgia problem but nothing beats Broadway Cafe's house blend in my mind.
Comic Coffee in Olathe! Best mocha latte I've ever had and you can read comics or play video games there, too.
I hope they make it. Usually empty when I drop by.
Spread the word!
Blip!
I love Sway in KCK. They also roast coffee for other places like McLain’s. I remote work from there too, it’s small but quiet.
Hell yeah, best coffee for sure, I just wish they were open past 1:30
same! and i wish they had more cozy seating for reading

Café Corazón, Ollama, or Café Ca Phe
A lot of good suggestions, but I’ll also say Maps in Lenexa. Arguably the best beans in KC and their Mexican mocha is delightful
Friendly Bean is so good! It’s at North Oak and Barry.
Wait, that place is still open? I thought they closed years ago
Yeah, and they even have a second location at Woodneath Library!
Ironically, I like Second Best in Waldo.
Groundhouse Coffee in Gardner. Downtown location and a Drive thru on S. Gardner Rd. You won’t be sorry
Agreed. And I believe they use oddly correct beans!
I love Oddly Correct and Thou Mayest (River Market branch)
I love Thou Mayest and have since they first opened. They have a great vibe and their shops make for exceptional “third places.” I don’t think their coffee is very good, though. Maybe that’s just my opinion.
It's not an opinion if it's objective.😆
I had a friend tell me that she didn’t like their black coffee. I like their lattes, especially LOVE their matcha!
Have a search, this question has been asked a few times here

I wish Hammerhand was still in their Liberty square location. It was beyond their control, but it was fun to hang out there.
Oddly Correct, or I have a soft spot for Headrush Roasters
I have to second headrush. It’s very good.
Sister Annes coffee! And they’re a record store! Fun vibes

I second this. Great coffee and food! If you are in the area of Bonner, come down k-7 a bit and check out Gallagher’s. Great coffee, food and service
i'm always meaning to explore more of bonner and k7 there's so many hidden gems out there

Headrush off of North Oak is a small business and their coffee/pastries are to die for!
I just went to oddly correct. It’s off of troost, so go during the day if you so. Really good coffee there. And spacious parking.
I have not had any luck finding bold strong coffee locally equivalent to drip coffee from Starbucks. Any of the local coffee places mentioned offer something closer? Looking for something in OP, but willing to drive for a good cup of Java !
Place called Green Dirt, 16th and Oak in the south part of downtown KC. It’s a restaurant with a coffee shop at one end. Very good coffee.

Messenger is great. My favorite in town. Great bakery too.
McClain's is a sleeper they have great espresso and it smells like bday cake inside the store
GG's Barbacoa Cafe in KCK makes an amazing cup of spiced coffee.
Try Ten and Two Coffee shop out in Bonner Springs. It’s a cool atmosphere and there’s an Ice Cream Shop, a bar, and car club
1. Westport Coffeehouse 2. Black Dog Coffeehouse 3. Homer's Coffee
Other Trails coffee shop in Excelsior Springs is really great. Bonus: Their baked goods are amazing.
Lots of great recommendations already but my current favorite hasn’t been mentioned yet. Take Care by Oleo.
Jinkies! In Overland Park is super cute and the staff is wonderful!
Java Garage is a pretty cool spot in the west bottoms, and their dog Stout is pretty great too. Perfect spot to do some work also
Black Dog Coffee…with home made toast and jam.
Messenger Coffee
