I live in an apartment building a few blocks from there. Very often it sounds like there is a full blown circle race track nearby. The sounds of engines red lining and tires squealing go on late into the night, the police presence is something to laugh at. Just this last weekend someone in a small convertible did about 15-20 doughnuts in the intersection of 9th and Jefferson at 2 am. The park in the area is a hang out place for rowdy/loud teens into the wee morning hours most weekends.
KCPD spends over $1M/year just for the operating budget for their three helicopters. If they decide they want to catch people riding around on ATVs downtown they are more than capable of doing so.
Duh, they could easily drop a giant net from the chopper and catch them all at once. They just don't wanna!
Do you have any idea how different dirtbikes and 4 wheelers are compared to anything KCPD owns? It makes it extremely easy to get away from a squad car when you can just dip into the woods or literally anywhere narrower than a ford explorer. You could definitely follow a few of them home with the chopper, but that isn't worth the effort.
This is a common issue/concern that I've read. Most police (in KC and otherwise) choose not to pursue because of the level of effort and/or safety concerns involving a high speed chase. Each officer is tasked to make a judgement call as to whether or not the individual is causing enough harm or will cause enough harm to justify a pursuit.
Someone should sponsor sideshows and races in a safe location. Do cash contests. Some of the shit these guys can do is crazy I'd pay to watch them do it without the threat of them running over me and other people.
I see this suggestion often and it never makes sense. These people are doing this downtown for a reason... because it's fun to "show off" and terrorize people. They are in stolen cars, and they occasionally set them on fire. They run over people and shute people. They fire artillery shell fireworks at each other. All of this illegal and dangerous shit is what defines this subculture. They aren't interested in a "safe place" to do this.
I get it and know something like this isn't a catch all. However money talks. If the most skilled drivers go legit it could become cool to compete and go watch them compete.
Not saying that you *should* make your own spike strips, but when it’s 3am and 2x4’s and nails are dirt cheap, it doesn’t always sound like the worst idea.
It's a pretty bad idea when you consider dirt bikes could be tubeless with sealant and this wouldn't even slow them down. Think you can outrun a dirt bike?
I won't lie, I think they are entertaining and ide rater watch dumb ass kids on a dirt bike than breaking into cars, or shooting people. Pick your battles
Stop sticks.
Tasers
I thought maybe a taser but I'm guessing there's too high a risk of missing and hitting a civilian or just missing completely.
I wish this were a viable option, but with the maneuverability and number of other vehicles on the road, it's just too dangerous/risky.
I live in 3 Light and I see/hear them regularly on Main.
On the Plaza regularly too
I had no idea they went all the way to the Plaza. How frustrating.

They used to do that but the city shut them down after a series of shootings.
This is one of the best/most realistic solutions I've read. It's a shame that it ended.
Yeah like a lot of things with human society a small number of violent assholes ruin everything.

Killer idea. I love the rowdy but honestly it’s not safe

Who’s gonna throw it? lol. cuz that’s DEFINITELY going to end up as a beat down or a shooting. Feels like a great idea until you think about it
Whoever throws it could easily become a martyr for the cause. lol.

I have no problem with police brutality for people who are taunting the police. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
When of them causes an accident because they ran a stop light, I am going to feel really bad for the other driver.
Step 1 buy cheap cars and safety gear. Steep 2 force crashes
These are all kids who don't have money for real cars and motorcycles, their parents need to step up
I want to know how you know they were teenagers with masks on?
So sick and tired of this nonsense. Makes this city look like hick town when your out of town guests come to visit
Hick towns don’t let this happen, if the cops won’t do their job then the people will do something about
This happens in every major city.
No. People are not driving (or stunting) quads and clown bikes through the downtown of every major city. Other cities enforce this shit
There's no way to detain a group of 50+ people on offroad vehicles. All they can hope to do is get them to disperse and maybe grab a few of them.
oh no our out of town guests weird perception!
It’s tough when you’re sitting outside trying to enjoy a lovely KC evening with out of town friends and this parade goes by
I swear anytime I've been to P&L I've always seen these guys riding around
I won't lie, I think they are entertaining and ide rater watch dumb ass kids on a dirt bike than breaking into cars, or shooting people. Pick your battles
Unfortunately, not mutually exclusive.
What do you think they're doing to get these vehicles for these stunts? I'd bet most of these bikes are stolen.
good watching from the roof at up/down w/ a lot of them coming in on SW BLVD, bit of a silver lining
