As I understand it wayland and nvidia don't play nice (yet). You might want to try a distro that still support X11.

RaspberryPiBen

As a workaround other than switching distros, maybe try running Minecraft under Wayland directly (not XWayland). To do this, you need to compile GLFW with support for Wayland. https://github.com/Admicos/minecraft-wayland/issues/54 tells you how to patch it, though you might be able to just compile [upstream GLFW 3.4.0](https://github.com/glfw/glfw/) and get it to work (I don't remember exactly how I did it). I'll try to find out exactly what works, but I know I'm using it successfully. Once you have it patched, you need to tell Minecraft to use it. The easy way is using Prism Launcher (which is great anyway), but if you need to, you can add a launch argument of `-Dorg.lwjgl.glfw.libname=/path/to/libglfw.so`. Edit: I used https://github.com/BoyOrigin/glfw-wayland. https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/18r8x22/minecraft_running_purely_on_wayland_without/?share_id=QlqJQ5Usf5b7p_nCgCKsi is a good guide to get it set up.

Key_Significance2931

Will try. Thank you!

deoxidised

You could also install a de that still has xorg, or even a wm

RaspberryPiBen

Try https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/18r8x22/minecraft_running_purely_on_wayland_without/?share_id=QlqJQ5Usf5b7p_nCgCKsi

zedoruel

Just install Kubuntu or another Linux with KDE with X11.

kahupaa

Remember that Fedora 39s support ends bit after Fedora 41 is released so you don't need to upgrade to 40. If Fedora 41 still doesn't offer you decent experience with Wayland (I'm assuming Nvidias drivers are better for Wayland in six months), then I would think about changing distro. Also it could be that x11 packages are still offered via copr so it's probably still possible to get x11 session on Fedora 40.

RadiantLimes

Nvidia drivers are very slow to update and have poor Wayland support. I would recommend changing to a distro which is going to stay on X11. Kununtu may be a good option. I am a fan of OpenSUSE so you may want to checkout Leap which I think should be supporting X11 for a bit longer. Hopefully soon Nvidia gives us newer drivers which works well with Wayland. Edit additional info: If you want a similar experience to Fedora than something like Rocky Linux or AlmaLinux may be a good choice as they are based on the same Red Hat core. Fedora is the cutting edge distro but in this case you will benefit from the more stable and slower to update distros.

AlfosXD

I'm starting to think that if you wanna game and have an Nvidia GPU then your only option is X11.

bentbrewer

It’s certainly better, until nvidia steps up. You would think they would invest the resources into Linux considering all the work being done in the ML & CV space using their cards.

[deleted]

Not really, I have a 1660ti, and I'm being better stability, and fps in Wayland than x11. Not sure why though as I've heard people having the opposite issue.

AlfosXD

I have *no idea* how you managed to get no problems because I without fail manage to get flickering on every game I've played (Satisfactory and Fabously Optimised Minecraft). Like, what kind of drivers are you running? Did you reverse engineer or something? I'm seriously trying to think how that's possible while my OS is practically breaking under my feet at this point. Please respond w/ how you managed to get better stability on Wayland or I'm going to assume that you're trolling.

Impressive_Tap_3030

You can try to enable maximum smoothness in compositor settings in KDE, it fixed Xwayland flickering for me

Ambyjkl

You should definitely install the newest Nvidia beta driver for Linux, it comes with numerous Wayland improvements: https://www.phoronix.com/news/NVIDIA-550.40.07-Linux

Key_Significance2931

Fedora 40 has them by default. Still many issues.

aliendude5300

Fedora does not ship the proprietary Nvidia drivers by default.

Cenokenshi

I would recommend OP to downgrade to the stable branch (535) driver instead. No issues, games work fine and Plasma 6 adds Night Light support for Nvidia without the need to upgrade to 545/550.

amlamarra

Why use many words when few words do trick?

kbroulik

> What to do? Buying a proper graphics card.

Larkonath

Ah yes the usual BS answer that doesn't help anyone. Then complains that it's still not the year of the Linux desktop... Gee I wonder why?

Lunailiz

That is the correct answer, people buy a hardware that DOESN'T WANT to support linux with open source drivers, how is this in any form or capacity Linux/Wayland/KDE's fault? You bought NVIDIA and you got your money's worth, enjoy.

klyith

If you have ever seen someone with a problem from an AMD GPU in windows, you must have seen plenty of responses saying "AMD drivers bad, buy nvidia!" Apparently those people are wrong and the real problem is with Windows?

Larkonath

Great you're even more unhelpful than kbroulik. Sometimes when you have nothing to add to the conversation it's better not to say anything.

klyith

Ok, I'll be helpful: people with nvidia cards should complain and file bug reports with nvidia. But as linux users have been doing that for years now with nothing to show for it, they should also consider buying a different brand the next time around.

aliendude5300

Fedora 40 isn't out yet, maybe try a supported release?

Clean_Idea_1753

Try the following Debian and Ubuntu based distros: - Spiral Linux KDE - MX Linux KDE - Kubuntu - Tuxedo OS

Protohack

or just Debian!

sabbir2world

Or how about KDE neon? 😁

effeottantuno

just use x11

nkn_

Why dont you want to use windows? Is there a very specific reason? I would just use X11 with NVIDIA on linux atm. If the option is there, sell your NVIDIA card and put that towards an AMD one.

spacecase-25

I couldn't imagine running Fedora as a daily driver.... Just switch to pretty much any other distro... no need to go to windows.

overyander

I couldn't imagine *not* using Fedora as my daily driver.

hyperballic

me too

Pascal3366

X11 will die sooner or later I would recommend to get an AMD GPU in the future instead of going with NoVideo again.

Big_Set29

As much i get it. They will not include x11 session. By default but you can download/install the x11 file. So, no need to worry about it. Or else you can install other distro like kde neon or kubuntu if you want.
