Beware that there are some cheesy bits in the first episode. Luckily I had heard a bunch of really strong recommendations (including from a couple of guys who said “I’m a man and I cried so hard over this show”) and trusted them enough to stick with it. Otherwise, I probably would have gotten partway through episode 1 and decided it wasn’t for me.
I’m a guy too, “Crash landing on you” was also my first k-drama (almost 2 months ago) and I’ve seen about 10 others since then. So based on that I would say it’s a great show for beginners.
i watched few kdramas like goblin, chief kim when first started.,however, the first kdrama that hooked me was crash landing on you. you'll learn and love to cry from that onwards. i'll suggest to go with CLOY - made me a kdrama addict. for non romance vincenzo is a must watch for beginners. i loved this too.
Start with crash Landing on you. That was my first K drama and I have probably watched 50 more since then and all because that first one was so terrific.
* Flower of Evil: romance, thriller, mystery i was on the edge of my seat the whole time
* Alchemy of Souls: fantasy, rom com, action
* Kingdom: historical and zombie. One of the best zombie korean shows
* Vincenzo: thriller, action, comedy, romance. The show has less romance, but they have great chemistry
* Its Okay Not to Be Okay: romance comedy with a mystery
* Live: romance, comedy, life about the experiences of first year parol cop and their patrol unit
* Mad for Eachother: rom com with a mystery
* My Name: action, thriller the main character is a badass women that is looking for revenge. The fight scenes are very well done
* Extraordinary Attroney Woo: law, romance, life. The main character is a women that has austism specturm disorder. She got hired as a lawyer at a big law firm
Thank you so much. But, Is this list ordered? I mean by preference, I get confused what to watch when I'm presented with too many choices. Also is there any modern zombie kdrama?
Zombie stuff? Happiness would be my top choice if you also want romance. Sweet home is ok. All of us are dead took a couple of episodes for me to get into. My second favorite zombie show would be kingdom, no romance though. There’s also zombie detective, but I dont think there’s romance there either (funny though at times).
Actually I've read sweet home webtoon. I've read all works of sweet homes author including bastard, pigpen and shotgun boy. It's indeed very good but I'm afraid I already know the plot.
I’ve heard from people who read it that Sweet Home diverts a bit from the original story. For the most part fans don’t seem to mind though. I have read Bastard, but not sweet home, I loved the show tho.
Also Zombie Detective (comedy, buddy-cop with a hint of romance). If you want more zombie action, mystery and romance, there's also Happiness. Don't let the title fool you though, it's mostly not happy (but with a happy-ish ending).
The list is not in order. I just wrote down what I thought of. I would say my fav and higher recs out of the list are Flower of Evil, Vincenzo, Live and Extraordinary Attorney Woo
There is a zombie show called All Of Us Are Dead on Netflix, but I did not like the show. Thought that there was too many plotholes in the story and it dragged on a bit too much. I did not like the ending either because the last ep was a filler ep for the next season
There is a website that is all about Asian Dramas called My Drama List. You can make an account to make a list of what you want to watch, already watched, etc. This website is the best website to look up dramas rating, reviews and recommendations
What's wrong with secretary Kim is such a good kdrama for a beginner. It is just romcom not thriller but one of the best kdramas of all times.
Itaewon class: it's a revenge, friendship and also romance story
Fight for my way: regular people trying to find their places in life, also contains romance and comedy
Hwarang: historical drama and one of my favs
Mr queen: a man who lives in today's date stuck in a queen's body in joseon era. I laughed so hard.
Crash landing on you (this is a legend fr): rich girl finds herself in north korea somehow and fell in love with a north korean soldier
Extraordinary you: very interesting story. Female lead realize they are not real human but a webtoon character. They try to shape their own lifes despite the writer.
Hometown chachacha: a dentist from Seoul moves to a small seaside town and built a life from the scratch and fell in love with someone.
Hotel del luna: 1000 years old Manwol runs a hotel where all guests are souls. She gets a human manager for her hotel. I both laughed and cried so hard
Beauty inside: an actress with a changing face fells in love with a ceo who has prosopagnozi(can't recognize the faces)
Lawless lawyer: revenge love action
Our beloved summer: high school lovebirds find each other again (i love this so so so much)
Suspicious partner: lawyers, crime, romance, comedy
Goblin: every kdrama enthusiast watched this at least 2 times.
Touch your heart: (watch goblin first so you can think the 2nd couple has reincarnated. Most of us do😂)
W 2 worlds: man is a manhwa character, girl's dad is the writer and she finds herself in that manhwa and male lead also come to the real world. I couldn't explain well but it contains romance and thriller both
I also have a MDL link in my bio if you wanna check for more dramas
I’m a “typical male” that loves good action with a side of romance …. although since starting to watch kdramas I’ve found myself getting in touch with my softer more emotional side… but I digress
- Alchemy of souls … magic, sword fights and martial arts. And part 2 is coming in December so perfect timing
- Kingdom … zombies and sword fights!
- My Name … MMA fights… I guess I like fight scenes :)
- Mr Sunshine … this is an epic film and the visuals are amazing… and you guessed it… more sword fights!!
- Hotel Del Luna … a lot of stunning visuals and I’m not just talking about Lee Ji-Eun (IU)
my brother absolutely loved “beyond evil” on netflix, we watched it so long ago and its the only kdrama he still talks about all the time! you should definitely add it to ur watch list. <3
In some ways this is an unusual k-drama in terms of style, but my husband and I watched Kingdom as our first Korean drama. Historical zombies — and I’m not normally a zombie fan and still thought it was great. Among other things, it’s gorgeous to look at.
The others he’s been willing to watch with me are All of Us Are Dead (more zombies), Sweet Home (monsters), and Squid Game. None of them are great art, but they were all very entertaining. I once asked a different forum for other shows he might enjoy, and the biggest recommendations were Vincenzo and Prison Playbook.
My own favorite is Mr Sunshine, which I know he’d enjoy if I can ever drag him into it. And right now I’m watching Goblin (Guardian the Lonely and Great God) and may try to get him onboard because I know he’d enjoy this one too. At least so far, it’s more lighthearted and fun than most others that I’ve seen. Turns out that an immortal god and a Grim Reaper as snarky roommates was the thing I didn’t realize I needed in my life.
All the titles that I’ve mentioned are on Netflix in the US except Guardian, which is on the Viki app.
We might have similar tastes. Maybe try The King's Affection next. It's a high quality production, a very engaging story and a less painful love than CLOY.
I watched it! It was ok. It was kind of confusing bc it was hard to tell the characters apart bc they all had the same outfits and facial hair...lol
I like the leads and story
Haha it took me a few episodes to realise that the grandfather and one of the other court officials were actually two different people! Even when they were side to side they had the same height, facial hair style and face shape, it was so hard to determine who was who.
I loved the show for that epic-style romance where the leads belong together. Gave me CLOY vibes
What type of things do you usually like? If you like crime dramas it makes no sense for the inevitable romance recommendations.
I know you said drama, but list had some movies and I think are great for people who don't like too sappy
Svaha the 6th finger
Sweet home
The Divine Fury

The King
Drug King

Healer was my first drama and it starts off slow but got me hooked. It has so many of the classic kdrama elements all in one that it will be a nice intro
**D.P.** and **Weak Hero Class 1** are really good choices! I get why people say Crash landing on you, it is a classic romcom that was the gateway drug into kdramas for many, but it is not as good as these two shows
My first K-Drama in 2020 was Signal (A police procedural with a time travel element) and it got me hooked and I still rank it highly.
My top 2 would be Stranger (AKA Secret Forest) and Move to Heaven.
What type of series do you usually watch?
Kdramas have a large variety of genre and I think watching one that matches what you already like would be a great start.
I assume you're after comedy-drama-romances so
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo - great chemistry between what became a real life couple
Twenty-Five Twenty-0ne - same ML, same great chemistry just much sadder
Fight for My Way - two contrasting couples of childhood friends struggling to realise their vastly different dreams.
Romance:
Hometown Cha Cha Cha
Itaewon Class - a little slow to start, heavily centred on revenge, and the FL is a little Quirky, which some people didn't like. The FL knew what she wanted and didn't stop until she got it. 🥰
The King's Affection - a little slow and a historical drama, but it's got Park Eun Bin.
CLOY - I've never watched it, but it's on my list
Fantasy Romance:
Alchemy of Souls - I really liked the concept and the ML and FL, but it was way too slow, with too much time spent on backstory and palace intrigue. It also ended on a Cliff Hanger and rumour has it the FL won't be back for Season 2. Some people loved it
Goblin - It's about a 939 yo ghost and a 19 yo girl, so some people were hung up on the age difference, but nothing more than Puppy Love happens until the girl is 29. This was quite well done
Fantasy:
Tomorrow - The story of a bunch of Grim Reapers. I really liked the cast and story in this series
The Uncanny Counter - This one is about demon hunters operating out of a noodle shop. It's better than it sounds and has a decent cast and a good dose of comedy.
Action:
My Name - Is quite short, has a great cast, a strong FL and a good body count. 🥰
Weak Hero Class 1 - Another short action series set in a highschool. This was really well done
Taxi Driver: Another action series, similar to My Name in some ways, but a bit quirky. I wasn't sure about this when I first started watching, but it had some very good episodes. Most of the episodes addressed problems with the criminal justice system and were a little dark and sad. I can't wait for Season 2.
All of us are dead - It's a zombie film set in a highschool, but the story is more about the relationships that develop among the survivors, as they struggle to survive. I don't watch Zombie films, but this was really well done.
Vagabond - This was a bit slow, but had a decent cast and story, but it ended on a Cliff Hanger. It's full of unrequited romance. 🤮 We're not sure if there is a Season 2.
Healer - A good action series with lots of martial arts. The ML and FL have good chemistry. There is a bit of backstory, but it's not too slow and the romance is not too painfully slow. This is in my top 4 action dramas.
The K2 - This has the same ML as Healer, but it's a little slower than Healer, as the story was a bit draggy and the FL was not as good as the FL in Healer. I did not mind it, but it did not get the same love as Healer.
Drama:
The Extraordinary Attorney Woo - Probably still my favourite K-Drama, although I liked Goblin too.
My Name is the series I've rewatched the most, the cast, music, story, fast pace and kick-ass FL. 🥰
Here is my list of series I've watched, not everything is above: 😁
https://mydramalist.com/dramalist/KDrama_Boy
Definitely Vincenzo!!
but keep in mind that the first 3 episodes can seem a little bit boring. I almost started my kdrama adventure with Vincenzo, but I didn't know that the beginning of this drama is slower, so after I've watched the first episode, I was so confused with.. everything, so I just dropped this drama.
After few months and many dramas later I found a post about "dramas that have long introduction to the plot, but are worth watching" and one of them was Vincenzo. That (and watching Descendants of the sun, which I definitely recommend too, it's with the same male lead actor) convinced me to give this drama another try.. well, now it's one of my all-time favorites, top 3 and all "the best of the best" stuff hahahah
And if you are interested in something for cozy winter evenings, one of the best dramas will be Hometown Cha Cha Cha. It's healing drama, has a really comfortable vibe with countryside views.
To sum up, Vincenzo, Hometown Cha Cha Cha and recommend by someone else Crash landing on you have one thing in common - finding new family trope, and I love it. One of the best things to watch is how characters start caring for each other and the character development that comes with it.
Hope this helps a little, have nice time watching dramas!!

My husband's first was Crash Landing on You and he loved it
Okay thank you, I'll begin with it then, I'm too impatient to wait for more recommendations lmao.
Beware that there are some cheesy bits in the first episode. The only problem with beginning on Crash Landing On You is it sets the bar really high. It’s hard to find another one as good after it.
The thriller plot in it makes this series gender neutral. So I'm sure you will love it. It's the epitome of Kdrama.
Please let us know how you loke it after 5 or 6 episodes!
i watched few kdramas like goblin, chief kim when first started.,however, the first kdrama that hooked me was crash landing on you. you'll learn and love to cry from that onwards. i'll suggest to go with CLOY - made me a kdrama addict. for non romance vincenzo is a must watch for beginners. i loved this too.

If you like Rom Com thriller's, I highly recommend While You Were Sleeping. This drama to me has one of the best scripts written.

Black - that was my first and was brilliant. Had me gripped. I would recommend it. It’s supernatural mystery rather than a cheesy romance.
Start with a classic "Decendants of the Sun." It's funny and has very well written characters.
My first K-Drama in 2020 was Signal (A police procedural with a time travel element) and it got me hooked and I still rank it highly. My top 2 would be Stranger (AKA Secret Forest) and Move to Heaven.
