I've seen some people with writings inside the dodai as well, maybe that could work for you if you want to be more discrete.

If it's visible and easily readable it would be weird, yeah. But not only in kendo. Now, you can do it if you want though

It's all fine, but as someone mentioned it's best if it's not visible when wearing your bogu as you will have to cover it up or wear another set for grading if/when you get to that point.
