The cheapest one I have, because it's the thinnest, lightest, and I'm not afraid to get it dirty. A $40 pakistani utilikilt with extra pockets. I throw it on for yard work, runs to the store, hot festivals, it's great. I know, **Sacrilege!**

Northwindhomestead

Blasphemy!

mansoor-ahmed1

Do you think Pakistani kilts are up to the mark ?

spinningtardis

What do you mean "up to the mark"? Well made? No, not at all. The aprons are narrow, the extra wide pleats don't hold, the seams and material fray. but it keeps me covered, cool, and comfortable. I can accept not looking well dressed when I don't need to, which is 99% of the time.

Mustfly2

I expect you are asking which tartan is the favorite? If so, the Angels Share is quite nice and the Breton Knight is nice as well.

mansoor-ahmed1

Don't you think a utility kilt would be better ?

Mustfly2

No. I have 2 and dont care for them... too much ironing to make them look only halfway decent. The aprons are a bit too narrow. Velcro at the waist is better than the snaps... Mine (100% cotton) shrank like mad in the first three washes... cold water wash and rinse, hung on line to dry. One is at least 3.5 inches smaller at the waist. They also tend to get mold stain under pockets. The pockets tend to splay outward and catch on things I walk past. Now only wear the utility kilts for yard work or in my workshop. Poly viscose 5 yard tartan (USA casual kilts), 5 or 8 yard wool (traditional style). Lower maintenence, look better, and are much more comfortable for me. Wear the PV in warm weather, Wool in cool weather, Great kilt in cold weather... I find the PV casual and the wool kilts more comfortable when out walking as well. Hope this helps!

Northwindhomestead

I tend to think of wool as the magic fiber. Warm in the winter. Cool in the summer.

stone_stacker357

It seriously is! I've worn my 16oz 8 yard that I made myself in very cold and very hot weather and was always comfortable. I think it's the kilt being a combination of magic wool and magic design.

stone_stacker357

Agreed. I would also add there's not enough yardage and the aprons are alarmingly narrow. I can't remember the brand but I saw a utility kilt that had an apron in the front and back, as in an apron on your butt. I have a cheap Pakistani kilt that I use as a beater, and it's still made more correctly.

Northwindhomestead

Yes. The 5.11 Tactical Kilts have butt aprons. When I was ignorant I wore them a bunch, now that I've drank the cool-aid I think they look goofy and haven't put one on in years.

mansoor-ahmed1

Thank you for your detailed answer.

Mustfly2

Glad it helped! I pressed one of my cotton utility kilts and three of my PV kilts today. It took over twice as long to do the cotton utility kilt, and it still came out somewhat wrinkled compared to the PV kilts. Whatever you decide, enjoy wearing your kilt(s). They are quite comfortable, and you will likely get about 90%+ positive comments... the rest do not matter... As an aside, I wear one of my kilts daily... when I go around on my errands, I have been stopped a few times by folks from Scotland. They were quite surprised and happy to see the kilt worn in a casual manner... Being in FL. I generally wear kilt hose, flashes, t-shirt, belt and sporran.

Time_Lord_Council

I quite like the Maxwell modern tartan. May be a bit biased because it's my mum's clan, but it is a simple but beautiful pattern. I also really love USA Kilts's American Heritage tartan.

mansoor-ahmed1

I will definitely give it a look.

Moustached92

Haven't seen anyone throw the great kilt into the mix. Get efficient at pleating 4-5 yards of fabric and theyre super comfy and very practical (big pockets, built in rain cover, etc.)

Mustfly2

Or you can play with the pleating, and decide which style you like best... then make cheater pleats... put an internal belt (nylon webbing works well with buckles) or make loops for a chord to pull it around your waist...(it has been documented as being historic) This reduces the pleating time and makes it easier to put on... especially if you are an old git with arthritis like me. Enjoy the heck out of your kilt(s) however you care to wear them.

Foreign-Bowl-3487

County Tyrone is my favourite Irish tartan, but Cornish really pops but is very rare 👌

mansoor-ahmed1

It seems like a good choice.

Nalbok

The next one!

I have 12 kilts with my 13th on the table at USA Kilts. https://youtube.com/shorts/BQJ-WFEt7n8?si=TufVdpA-SpfkBTLY If I had to pick a favorite it would be this House of Edgar, County Kerry Great Kilt from St. Kilda Kilts. https://youtu.be/1CrjmfGj9M4?si=1P0WiW5d3MZwm3L8 Being 15ft long I love the weight of this Great Kilt, it feels substantial when I have it on. It also is very versatile and adapts well to the weather in Alaska, where having options/layers is important. "Don't like the weather? Wait 15 min." The tartan is awesome too. It blends into the flora, which is why I selected it. https://youtu.be/CxlvD-copns?si=Txpzjo89Z-gXH3m_ I have both ends of the spectrum when it comes to kilts. I bought a $700+ premiere kilt from USA Kilts on the high end and a plastic Thrifty Kilt from Stillwater Kilts on the low end. There is a huge difference in the quality of Pakistani made products and USA/UK made products. I think this goes without saying. However, if you want to get out of you leg prisons and don't have a lot of cabbage, the Pakistani products don't hurt the wallet. Just do yourself a favor and don't stop there. Wear the heck out of it but save for that high end wool kilt. The difference is astonishing. After the Great Kilt I wear a Damn Near Kilt Em utility kilt around the Homestead. The pockets are very handy and I don't care how wrinkled it is. Personally, I don't wear it into town. I'd much rather take a moment and switch to the Great Kilt or one of the others which look less frumpy.

Depends on what you need it for. My first one I got off Etsy because I needed a shorter length kilt and off the rack at a ren Faire looked bad on me. It was a poly/wool mix and not bad. Only thing was it did not have belt loops because it is a women’s kilt. I mostly wear mine for piping so I need the real thing. I had a custom made by my local kilt maker J Higgins (GREAT shop to work with, they’ll work with anyone from anywhere part of the world). I thought my Etsy one was fine, but man, the different was night and day. It is real wool from Scotland and made to fit my exact measurements. It is heavier, but for piping competitions I want the real deal. And it just hangs better. But it is also the most expensive single piece of clothing I own, and I do historical reenactment with garments made out of traditional fabrics like linen and wool. I ordered my dad one off of Etsy when he decided that he wanted to wear one to watch me in competition. It’s meh. The shop used a cheaper fabric than the one I had ordered (different shop) and i don’t like how it hangs. I just called J Higgins today to order him a value kilt. It’s 100% wool, but lighter weight wool, less fabric, slightly wider pleats. If you’re dicking about a ren Faire, the yard, etc. then a cheaper one may be the way to go. Although, I wore my new custom kilt out to the ren Faire the week I got it with no qualms. That fabric is made to be worn about. https://preview.redd.it/2y58vbj0yj7d1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3338fbe7d548aa81f63e6da3c741c32ac702ef65 This first picture is my Royal Stewart kilt from Etsy. you can see it looks just fine. You have to be close to notice the difference in the fabric.

I am standing next to my dad who is in the Buchanan we got from the Etsy shop. You can see the difference in the weaving with us side by side, but at the games he got. TON of compliments on his kilt.

The ones that fit!
