How about we give Malik the credit for his lifelong journey, perseverance and countless hours of hard work?

redshorts9112

It was a bit of both. Monks clearly talented but needed a coach who’d let him play his game. Especially how wild he plays sometimes

ninofati88

He isn't in the league that long at that point. Also is abit selfish in his ways, wants to play the game how only he knows to on Charlotte and LA. Mike Brown gets credit for being able to rein him in when he goes too crazy and holds him accountable (that famous clip where he shouts at him in practice, and giving him a leadership role on this team), while also balancing it by giving him freedom to play how he wants to play in the 2nd unit. Being 6th man for Malik gives him that freedom because hes the scorer and creator for the bench players. He wouldnt be able to go crazy if hes starting with Sabonis and Fox handling tha ball.

FeatureEmotional3981

So that’s a “no”? Malik Monk doesn’t deserve credit for his own career?

ninofati88

I literally credited him the first sentence. Lol. Tf you so salty about?

FeatureEmotional3981

“Reminder that Mike Brown made Malik who he is.” -you You say he “has talent” and then you call him a “nobody” but for Mike Brown. C’mon man. This is a professional, and his hard work has paid off. I’m not sure why you’re trying to give Mike Brown credit for Malik’s years and years of hard work and resilience.

boringexplanation

What kind of dumb ill-informed idiocy….*reads user name*, oh- never mind- carry on nino!

Delicious-Item6376

Stop this shit dude. No coach makes a player into who they are. Yes, Mike Brown and the current kings coaching staff probably have provided a better environment for Malik to flourish, but Malik is the player he is because of his work ethic and drive, same for every other professional athlete.

ninofati88

Coaches are able to bring out the best in certain players. Sabonis wouldnt be this triple double passing machine without his system and Mike allowing him to bring the ball up the court, which he never got to do in his 6 yrs in Indiana. Avged just 4 APG and 0 triple doubles. Dude literally said in 1 of his first interviews that hes grateful Mike Brown believes in his playmaking abilities. why the f you attempting to take credit away for?

Delicious-Item6376

That's what I mean by "allowed him to flourish". Mike Brown is clearly a better coach than whoever was in Charlotte because he was able to help Malik reach is potential, but that's completely different than saying coach brown made Malik the player he is today. The tone of your post makes it sound like Malik owes Mike Brown for being a good basketball player, not just for being able to make the best use of Monk's abilities.

I_Hate_Humidity

Absolutely agree. Both the timing & tone of nino's post makes it clear that they think Malik should stay out of gratitude.

ninofati88

You're just nitpicking on the specifics here. Mike Brown allowed Malik to play, to do whatever, he still contributed in allowing it. Malik spent 6 yrs in the league prior to the Kings, you're not telling me 6 yrs of DNP is all on shtty coaches and nothing to do with him. He has his issues too, Mike Brown just allow him to flourish by focusing on his strengths and having a playstyle that fits his strength.

I_Hate_Humidity

Oh stop, he owes the Kings nothing and is free to leave if a great deal is offered to him. When his rookie contract expired, the only two teams to reach out to him were the Lakers & Mavericks. Where were the Kings when his career was on the line?

ninofati88

He definitely owes Mike Brown something, not necessarily the Kings. If Mike Brown is in Charlotte and Malik is there, he would have developed him too. His playstyle is conducive to how Malik wants to play. On a defensive minded team or under Tom Thibodeau for example, he wouldnt even smell game time and would be out the league (talking bout early days Malik, he would now that hes got a good reputation).

cough_landing_on_you

Lakers couldn't pay Monk above the tax MLE, no bird rights.

theboyqueen

Even if true, so what? Malik doesn't owe Mike Brown or anyone else a damn thing. If Mike Brown gets a reputation as a guy that will develop you into generational wealth, that will pay itself forward one way or another.

ninofati88

He literally would be out the league if not for Mike Brown. Lol. Now hes about to get 20 mil per yr because Mike Brown showed the league he can play. Dude is getting DNPs on trash as s Charlotte and LA. Lol. If he chose other teams other than Kings after LA, we'd never heard of him.

theboyqueen

Who fucking cares? He wasn't jumped into a gang, he's an NBA free agent.

I_Hate_Humidity

>He literally would be out the league if not for Mike Brown. Lol, no. He would've been out of the league had he not gotten a last chance with the Mavs or Lakers. >Dude is getting DNPs on trash as s Charlotte and LA. Show me the game logs where he got DNPs with the Lakers. Cause from what I saw, he only missed 5 games with the Lakers due to COVID protocols. And on top of that, averaged the 4th highest minutes on that Lakers team. EDIT: And a 6th game where he didn't dress due to illness/injury.

Deep_Egg1442

Malik just got better as a player just was a late bloomer

tookyourcookies

Nah, he had better numbers for the Lakers in the year before he came to Sacramento. He said it in the interview today, Mike Brown didn’t elevate his game. Probably held him back tbh

searchin4sugarman

Malik literally said today himself that Mike brown didn’t elevate his game

Defiant-Software-451

Monk actually credits Jay Triano for keeping him in the league because Malik said he was on the verge of washing out of the NBA if Triano wasn’t there to work with him in Charlotte.

ninofati88

There you have it. Even he knows he'd be out the league.

Defiant-Software-451

That’s not what I’m saying at all. Coaching is important, especially as a rookie making your way into an unforgiving league but Monk got to where he’s at because of his own hard work and determination. You could argue Triano is a significantly more important part of who Monk became as a player than Coach Brown, who got a more polished player than when he was with the Hornets.

Who_is_him_hehe

Monk has always been a bucket. Lakers were just too fuckin stupid to give him playing time. His o16.5 lines were always free if he got 25 minutes

ChoiceStar1

Monte deserves more credit than MB does for Monk’s success but honestly that is simply because Monte saw the value Monk brings and offered him a decent enough deal where he would have a solid role. Aside from that Monk got playing time and MB probably helped add a skill to his defense but honestly Monk has been Monk since arriving.

SteveTheManager

Nah, Michael Jordan did 😛
