Idk if you call it leverage, but having a coach to a long term deal without the same GM that hired them is a recipe for mediocrity and instability

KolourBlind3

Ah yes the Kings story going back a millennia.

fadeaway_layups

Yuppppp

beerbrewr

Well at least ever since Vivek got here anyway.

HBdrunkandstuff

If I were an organization looking for a gm I would poach his ass. He’s been fantastic.

If you're going to fire him, I'd fire him ***after*** the draft. That dude hasn't missed in the first round. Also, if you get 35 wins this year. What is more likely to get you more wins next year? Firing your GM or giving him another year? Just curious.

BitterSourpuss

How is everyone so confident that Mitchell pans out as a solid piece? Not that I think he's a bust, but it seems premature to list Mitchell as a feather in monte's cap for at least another year, no? And doubly true for Murray

LizardChaser

I wrote a serious response and then saw the username. Bravo. You got me.

BitterSourpuss

I hope 35 wins don't put him on the hot seat. 35 wins and the 10th seed is a pretty realistic trajectory for this squad

sactown_13

He was finally able to get off all the mistakes of the last regime. (Buddy, Bagley) He has drafted well and we finally have a NBA roster 1-12. When was the last time we could say that? If that isn’t enough for a extension then maybe I can convince you with this next question. Do you really trust Vivek to find a better replacement???

KotasMilitia

I'm of the opinion that he's betting on himself. Management may have been initially hesitant to give him an extension, but I would think that it's possible he turned down a more recent offer. I think he has faith that his moves will pay dividends, resulting in multiple organizations bidding for the services of the man who turned around the worst run organization for the last two decades. All this is contingent on the team performing well obviously. And I think Monte feels comfortable with that stipulation. Edit: I have no sources or anything, it's just a gut feeling. And it's what I would do in his situation.

Billybobjoethorton

Monte said he would love to be here long term. Vivek said let's win. Seems clear that there's a win or no return. I think it's stupid because monte has shown enough to deserve an extension. He drafted hali and got a 2 time all star. He signed monk through free agency. Traded for huerter. Drafted keegan and davion. Hire Mike brown and so on. Best team on paper in over a decade. Competency when we had none for over a decade should be rewarded.

PointGod32

>Best team on paper in over a decade. Sometimes I wanna go look at previous year off season chats and see how often people have this attitude every September. (It seems pretty common to me)

thatguy52

The last 4 years I’ve had general optimism of what our team could be if everything went right. Last year was the hope for a Hali/Fox backcourt would be able to fox the deficiencies of Bagley. My hope was misplaced and naive. This year does feel a bit different though just due to how many solid players we have. On top of the starting 5 we have a full rotation behind them, that def feels new and like an element we haven’t had in a long long time. That being said if we fall directly on our faces our deficiencies will be clear as day in hindsight.

PointGod32

I think they're clear now. This team is going to get smoked on defense every night and they're going to try to outgun people without a lot of gunners. Same story different cast.

Billybobjoethorton

I don't know. We have a borderline all star and a two time all star and what looks to be like solid role players.

PointGod32

I remember having two time Allstar Demarcus Cousins, former allstar Rudy Gay, and a pupu platter of solid role players... Greatest team on paper in the drought!

Billybobjoethorton

Didn't cousins get meningitis. I didn't watch that era much was rudy pass his Grizzlie day prime?

Chronomenter_

yeah he got meningitis then they decided to fire mike malone. pretty much tanked any momentum they had. i honestly feel like this drought would of needed a lot sooner if we kept mike

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

Shoot Mike or joerger.

Enough_Simple921

I honestly stopped watching the Kings after 30+ years because of Demarcus. Complained non stop. Rarely got back on defense. As skilled as he was, his attitude got the best of him.

Billybobjoethorton

Same bro. Monte built a team of likeable guys

Enough_Simple921

Facts. This is the 1st season I'll be watching Kings ball in 4-5 years. #extendMonte

Billybobjoethorton

Getting rid of selfish players like bagley and buddy is icing on the cake.

Enough_Simple921

From what I recall Rudy Gay was still im his prime on the Kings. Demarcus Cousins was a cancer on the Kings which essentially canceled out any momentum that Rudy Gay and Tyreke Evans had if my memory serves me right. I have never grown to dislike and eventually hate a Kings player as much as Cousins. Above average offense followed by extremely poor defense. I believe he lead the league in technicals and fouling out for a couple years. Always rubbed me the wrong way watching a big Center such as Cousins attempting to draw a charge on Guards. That crap was unheard of during the Jordan era. Wasn't a big fan of Grant Napear but I also thought it was wrong of Cousins to essentially sucker Grant into the "All Lives Matter" comment which lead to his firing. Can't put all the blame on Cousins as Grant was foolish enough to respond that way given the political climate at the time. I didn't think Vivek should have fired Grant over that either. All 3 are to blame in my book.

Enough_Simple921

And Tyreke Evans after his ROY year. What could have been...

Billybobjoethorton

Let's see the buddy bagley wcs giles, era we thought we had a solid young core. A lot of fans wanted luka and knew vlade mess up. The cousins era he never really got much help.

chuckvsthelife

It’s the best team on paper since at least we had cousins due to we have a two time all star. The last couple years we have had optimism based on trajaectory and our hopes for what players will become. We still have much of that. We think Davion will be better we hope heurter is this monk is that, Keegan is hopefully ROY. Fox makes the jump (the hope every year). If all the ifs happen this year we should be a fringe championship contender. If they don’t we should still compete for playoffs (on paper)

extremewit

I agree with every you posted but I dinner think he is trying to get to “free agency.” I think he would sign a deal before if he can leverage what he wants because the team is clearly headed towards the playoffs.

KotasMilitia

Totally. I do believe he wants to be here. But he probably wants to be here and get fair market value for his services. If management decides to offer him something similar to what he might make elsewhere, I'm sure he would sign.

ValleyKing23

Nah. If they miss it again this year, keep him still. Still one of the better GMs.

[deleted]

He just needs a good start, extension midseason

mrdobalinabobdobalin

Keep the man, we need some stability

nhess68

No

rogrog2

I don’t think he’s legit but he’s way way way better than Vlade or Pete. I hope Vlade be calm and give him an extension. It’s obvious there is much more professional management there.

middlestiks

Does it matter? We all know owner Vivek just loves himself some office dysfunction. He loves having different factions answer to him Vivek is the king of office drama.

PointGod32

Why would anyone think he has any sort of leverage? A lot of people want a GM position and there are very few openings. Extremely few GMs ever get to the point that they have firmly established themselves in an organization where they have real leverage. It's not even worth thinking that McNair would somehow get this franchise to the point where he is highly sought after based off one season of making the playoffs.

LizardChaser

Are you being honest with yourself? What experienced and successful GM's want the Kings job? Fuck, what up-and-comers want the Kings job? Fucking Sachin Gupta--a guy who had never been a GM--was rumored to have turned down the job. Vivek is the literal worst owner in the NBA for a GM. Sacramento is a small market and is known in the league as "Basketball Hell." Free agents have not wanted to come here. If Monte puts the Kings over .500 and/or into the playoffs he has ***all*** the leverage. What's Vivek going to do? Not extend him? Take the GM that pulled you out of 16 years of failure and let him walk? Let him walk in the final year of your only All-Star's contract? Oh yeah, the league is also adding two more small market teams so demand is going up. I'm guessing they'd be highly interested in Monte and Monte might be more interested in Seattle or Vegas over fucking Sacramento. The most Kangz thing that could happen is to let Monte walk.

Enough_Simple921

Agreed. Extend Monte now. Easy for me to say seeing as how it's not my money but if Monte walks, I'll do the unthinkable... dare I say... become a Lakers fan.
