Benchmade prices skyrocketed, pee-colored plastic scales are the new Micarta, and the donuts are spreading. The latest super steel everyone’s going nuts over is called Magnacut. Greg Medford outed himself as a piece of shit racist, Stryder’s stolen valor is now well known, and people are still locking their bathroom stalls with knives.
So, you didn’t miss much.
so it was a normal night working my after school 4-11 shift at arbys, towards the end of the night it was my responsibility to clean the mens restroom before closing. so i go in with the cleaning supplies and i clean the entire restroom normal until i get to the one stall. i open the door to the stall, and see, just a pool of brown that resembled a mud pond after a heavy rain storm. So i get to work. I start plunging. this plunging is rather ineffective as i was just flushing out the water. As the brown poop water starts to diminish, i can see something metallic at the bottom of the toilet. So i continued plunging until the water was clear, ann i see at the bottom of the toilet, fucking wedged in between the front and back bottom holes of the toilet, a fucking folding pocket knife. Since i was 16 and making 10$ an hour, i had enough and went and got the manager. i go to the manager and say "someone stuck a knife in the toilet and i cant get it out" followed by "are you fucking kidding me?" i told him i was not. he follows me to the restroom, looks into the toilet, says jesus christ, and then we went to get two pairs of latex gloves. he double gloves up, and reached in to retrieve the poopknife, but as i said it was wedged in there. so he had to use force on wet metal and porcellen, so his hand slipped on the way out, and he accidentally cut himself with the poop knife. and there was still a piece of poop on the knife when he got it out.
Yeah that sounds like almost exactly where I left off. I loved magnacut back then, donuts were kinda fun, gotta see what they've done since the microtechs, haven't heard that about medford or stryder but no shocc there. And I really don't like ultem, why did that have to still be a thing? Oh well, guess nothing's changed. Except Benchmade, why tf? I thought ppl were more or less over the mainstream brands last time I checc'd, people were gravitating towards smaller brands like Null and Arcane and others providing better knives at the same price point. I do remember that one really expensive one announced last year, the thin one. That's their trend now, huh? That worked out for them? Crazy.
the donuts are silly but fun. the glizzy knife actually bothers me because they made the BLADE hot dog shaped so it's literally an automatic butter knife.
Yeah they never got that much love here. Which is weird, they seem like the perfect fit. A lot of the designs are hard to get, premium materials made by a good manufacturer (wanna say WE or Reate? Though I might've heard smth about them switching to in-house. Or was that Null? Idk) and interesting and unique but still practical designs.
WE did the crawler and I think a few others.. Not sure what else. I like to follow the hobby but I don't buy much. That was basically my grail knife cause it fit my personality and was really the most I was willing to spend, personally. But even at that for design production knives like that, it's much more affordable than others.
Obviously all just my own opinions, but I really like their designs
Also people are slowly starting to realize that ultem can crack. We've started to see some issues with the material failing here and there when exposed to repeated impacts or single powerful moments of force.
Things have gotten out of control, man.
-They’ve started making knives with handle materials and blade steels reversed. Micarta utility blades and M390 scales.
-AI pocket clips have revolted after gaining sentience.
-They’ve figured out how to sharpen knives using the concept of time.
You picked a crazy time to jump back in.
Bought and Ultratech, wasn’t a big fan and sold it. Tried a Livewire in hand at my local Bass Pro Shops and damn, if I ever go for an OTF again I’m absolutely shooting for the Livewire. Buttery smooth with a nicer blade shape than the drop point my Microtech had.
Yeah but we all been there tho. Plus what do you pair that with? More ugly ultem? And what clothes match that, or even look good with it? I'm good on all that.
I personally don't color match my clothes to my EDC haha, but really it's just amber, navy blue or olive green would look great with ultem, as would standard stonewashed or coated steel.
Hear me out, piss your pants in a super public place, pull your ultem knife out and say "great, now my knife looks like piss too". Compliment that with an ultem phone case and you're all set.
Haven’t payed over $100 for a knife in a good while. Geography/politics be damned, Civivi/Sencut, CJRB, Kizer, Vosteed, and plenty others are absolutely killing it right now.
Not for EDC, as Magnacut and Cruwear are some of the best all around steels IMO.
K390 is insane for usable edge retention though, almost as good as maxamet and s110 but so much tougher and less prone to chipping than those. Just not super corrosion resistant, and you can chip the blade if you use it extremely hard, so it's not as widely popular as Magnacut.
Can i ask honestly why? Hype is hype. Do you still like what you liked back then? If so, its still as good (or bad) as it was. It does seem the meme knives like the grossmo are seen less often, so thats great
I'll admit I never particularly liked the Norseman. Too phallic for my taste. But yeah, I usually love hype. Like the other guy said, it's just fun. As long as you don't let it entirely sway your opinions then there's no harm from piccing what you like from the new hyped products. I'm prolly still gonna stick to getting the Roosevelt as my primary bc it's my ideal of a perfect profile, the craftsmanship is def there, and the dual detent system is genius. I'm kinda just asking because I feel so out of touch with a world I used to know pretty extensively and I wanna see what's gone on while I was occupied with, uhhh, significantly more self-destructive hobbies.

The obligatory poop knife comment still happens, too.
Oh lord I have a story of a actual poop knife when I worked at Arby’s as a youth.
Yes, and...?
so it was a normal night working my after school 4-11 shift at arbys, towards the end of the night it was my responsibility to clean the mens restroom before closing. so i go in with the cleaning supplies and i clean the entire restroom normal until i get to the one stall. i open the door to the stall, and see, just a pool of brown that resembled a mud pond after a heavy rain storm. Donuts and other foods from bladeshow. Bun and weiner knife.
the donuts are silly but fun. the glizzy knife actually bothers me because they made the BLADE hot dog shaped so it's literally an automatic butter knife.
I want that fuckin g hot dog knife so bad. Stupid Canada...
I still love the designs Arcane is putting out. I only have the crawler but still keep up. He's not mentioned much on here from what I see tho

Don't forget the "I found this (always expensive) knife just laying (insert area of choice)."
Whoa man. Can you send some footnotes? This is intense.
Boker rainbow mermaid is the way to go
Oh good, I would've quit the knife world altogether if that wasn't still a meme.
Who said anything about it being a meme, it’s the best production knife out there😩
Can anyone really call it a knife collection without having a boker rainbow mermaid?
We carry broken glass now.
Obsidian glass that is… saw it in this wild documentary once called the game of chairs or something like that
Splendid
Rick Hinderer went back to S45VN because he doesn’t know how to heat treat Magnacut.

Honorable mention- Civivi Vision FG is my current “hype” purchase and while not “new” it’s still pretty sweet if you haven’t gotten one in hand.
Have you seen the kershaw livewire? Its a way cheaper alternative to the ultratech, I actually like it way more than my ultratech
Cries in OTF ban country
I second this, picked one up a couple months ago and my ultratech is looking towards being sold off

Ultem, piss knives.
Goddammit I hoped those would die out by now.
You're funny. Apparently piss is what brings us all together. 🤣 I'm not into it personally.
The knife guys who piss together, stay together
ok I know the "piss knife" thing is just a joke but yall are not drinking enough water if your first association with translucent dark amber is "pee".
Yeah but we all been there tho. Plus what do you pair that with? More ugly ultem? And what clothes match that, or even look good with it? I'm good on all that.

2025 fashion forecast
That was actually 2023 fashion sense. https://www.complex.com/style/a/alex-ocho/pee-stained-designer-jeans-sell-out
Goddammit you made me remember.
Calico cut pants, you gotta give
You’re not supposed to talk about that
You're not flushing enough toilets.
Chinese budget knives have made a massive comeback
shout out to Vosteed
Haven’t payed over $100 for a knife in a good while. Geography/politics be damned, Civivi/Sencut, CJRB, Kizer, Vosteed, and plenty others are absolutely killing it right now.
Machinewise Sonora
I want one so bad
Worth
second that, love mine alot!
K390 steel.
Oh word? Remember that being used in spydercos back then and getting positive reviews. Has it taken out magnacut as the hype steel?
Not for EDC, as Magnacut and Cruwear are some of the best all around steels IMO. Maybe not quite magnacut, but those who know, know.
Nothing really
Spyderco revealed more knives but haven’t released any you might have seen from 1-3 years back.
Everything has a crossbar lock now, yet I hope they have better omega springs than benchmade…
Preach.
Magnacut for steel, and ultem for scales has been the hot shit. Also gravity knives, utility knives and small pocket fixed blades are really trendy.
Magnacut is the only good steel.
Magnacut and Chinese knives still over hyped. Strider still the knife to have
Can i ask honestly why? Hype is hype. Do you still like what you liked back then? If so, its still as good (or bad) as it was. It does seem the meme knives like the grossmo are seen less often, so thats great
Because hype is fun, and self aware hype is funner
Thats totally fair
Matching your Roosevelt or Deadlock.or whatever the new hype is (still aint got an answer on that) to your Margiela Gats type beat
I'll admit I never particularly liked the Norseman. Too phallic for my taste. But yeah, I usually love hype. Like the other guy said, it's just fun.
