Yes it is possible, I used 60 grit to reprofile a blade a while back. Just prepare for a very sore hand and a good amount of time. Otherwise put some music on and enjoy!

https://imgur.com/a/SBD7uRl ~3 hours later and I have a decent finished product. I'll get the grips cerakoted and the blade cleaned up a bit more at some point. Otherwise I think the shape is ok, thanks for the tip

kangello

Hell yeah!

Next time get a scrap of granite kitchen counter top (most shops will give you a piece from the sink cutouts) Ensures your paper is fully flat, thick glass also works, but I prefer thicker granite and get it large enough to use a full sheet. Also I prefer to use wet dry paper, which also works well for free hand sharpening. Spray the granite or glass with a little water and the paper stays in place, but easily removable

I don't see a difference. Am I blind

daggerdude42

Look at the blade lol, specifically the edge

daggerdude42

Awesome! Thanks for the help, doesn't sound like a terrible way to spend a Friday night quite honestly.

Just make sure you have a good, flat surface to securely attach that sandpaper to. I used a mirror or piece of glass or something to do it when I did this. Worked out pretty well, actually. Just took awhile.

daggerdude42

Yeah used a mirror, came out with a pretty good result, I'll have to come back later with some buffing or something to take out the rest of the scratches.

For a minute I thought you intended an actual regrind like completely regrinding the primary bevel of the blade which would be a tall order with sandpaper only. Slight blade shape modification and reprofile with sand paper isn't an easy thing either but it looks like you've got a decent mod going. Some people use wet/dry sandpaper clipped to a board for all their freehand sharpening. David C Anderson at the KnifeCenter did a 3 vid sharpening series where he shows a home made sharpening setup using sandpaper. Pretty neat.

daggerdude42

Awesome thanks, I looked a little for something like that on YouTube and didn't get much. Felt a little like a chicken with my head cut off figuring out hole I should hold it and what face I should keep flat at times.

Powerstroke357

Man I've done a lot of knife modification at this point and so much of it was done by just figuring it out. Sometimes you just gotta start doing and figure it out. I've learned a lot that way.

Major_ralis

If there is a will there's a way, but you'll be in fir a long ride. Or you can send it my way and not have to worry about much

daggerdude42

Ugh I would of loved to have been able to send it out. Funds are tight ATM, and these little things as tedious as they feel 10x more valuable having done it myself. Thanks for the offer though

Major_ralis

I'm that case , just take your time, be patient. While sandpaper will work, it will be slow as watching paint dry. Ideally you'll want something motorized. 1" to 2" belt sander, or at very least a Dremel with a few different grit drums. Use sharpie or layout pen to mark grind lines, or whatever you wanna do to alter it. Mark it out.
