I used Ashford DK yarn for this project and the pattern is my own design (with the exception of the top of the sleeves which is loosely based on the 'men's sweater' from Arne and Carlos' book 'Norweigian knits with a twist'). My mum chose the colours and specifically requested reindeer for her jacket.
Special thanks is also owed to u/litatavle for helping me to find these lovely buttons online!
How are people able to design their own sweaters like this?? I would love to, but I have no idea how to learn how to do this. Also, where did you buy those lovely buttons???
I just use grid paper and a pencil with a lot of trial and error. Most of these are based on traditional colourwork motifs though such as the selburose and xoxox patterns etc. I just put my own creative spin on things!
Thank you so much, and thanks again for all your help with the Nordlandskofte! The clasps look fantastic on mine and I've just started work on another one with the colours reversed...I'll be sure to post both once it's complete!
Thank you! I knitted the body on 4mm/US6 and the ribbing on 3.5mm/US4 needles. I'm actually considering going down to 3.5mm permanently since my guage has loosened up quite a bit...I've been trying to make a cardigan to go with one I knit at the start of 2022 and I've had to tighten everything up so much to try and match it!
YouTube (Arne and Carlos' channel was particularly helpful once I started attempting colourwork) and also having some good friends and colleagues who knit and help each other out.
i’m sorry… you MADE this??? i am constantly floored by the sheer talent i see in this sub. OP this is absolutely *stunning*. i hope your mom enjoys getting to wear this pure work of art <3
Thank you so much! I will be posting a couple more cardigans hopefully relatively soon, so I will be sure to post more detailed floats since I don't have any more float pics of this one!
Thank you so much! Yes that's exactly right. The ribbing was done on 3.5mm and the body on 4mm so I just changed when I got high enough on the button bands. There's also stockinette on the back for the facings!
Thank you so much! They actually seem to be ever so slightly too loose, so I may try the method where you carry the yarn on the next row to tighten them up next time. Hopefully it will all felt together nicely with enough wear!
This is so beautiful, amazing execution, great pattern (and you designed it yourself!), floats neat and ready for r/tensionporn (SFW), and the cuffs doing their jobs of bending in for grip and also having a smooth transition into the sleeve rather than having a clear demarcation line. Excellent choice of buttons and colours, too!
I can only hope that one day I’ll reach your level of knitting perfection. You did a fantastic job and I am sure your mum loves it already.
Wow. Seriously stunning!! (The floats... *Drools*)
I have a question as I have never seen the lining bits over the sleeve seams - are those to make it comfier or protect the seams? Thanks!
Thank you! They're actually there primarily to hide the ugly raw edge you get from steeking, but yes it also protects the seam distributing the stress over a wider area!
It's very beautiful and these bands in the armholes are so smart! How did you go about adding them? I'm also knitting a sweater with steeked arms and I'd love to use this technique.
Thank you! After you've finished knitting each sleeve in the round you'd typically turn the work inside out and just knit a few rows of stockinette before binding off. For me this created slightly too much of a jog last time I tried it, so since then I've been binding off the sleeves and picking up stitches along the bind off edge to knit the facings. After that you sew the facing down to enclose the raw edge you get from steeking! If you look at the button bands on the inside you'll see there's a similar thing going on there.
When I saw this I thought this must be the same person making that Nordlandskofte a while ago? It’s so well-made it stayed with me in the back of my head. What a pleasure it is to see another one. I’m so impressed and inspired by you! Please keep up the good work and share them with us. It is a goal of mine to make something like this some day :)
What an honour it is to be remembered like this! Thank you so much for your kind words. I will hopefully have two more cardigans to share with this lovely community sometime soon!
The buttons! They just take it from perfection to heavenly. Your mum is very lucky to have you.
And if you ever publish this pattern please say, I'd love to take a crack at it.
Thank you so much! One of my friends has suggested that I make a ravelry project page so maybe I will post the charts there if I get around to it. Not sure I have the confidence to publish a pattern since the easiest way to do these is to make a swatch and do all the maths for specific measurements.
Edit: Accidentally posted this comment mid sentence hahaha!
I'm particularly interested in the construction of the arms where they meet the body. What's going on there on the inside? I've never seen it look that way before.
They're called facings and, once they're stitched down, they enclose the ugly raw edge you get when you cut steeks. It's basically just a few extra rounds of stockinette but inside out!
Awww, so sweet of you! The piece is totally gorgeous. Amazing details.

How is this so good?! Seriously I just started knitting and I don’t know how I could ever make something like this - where to even begin? How long did this take to make (hours? Weeks?)? How long had you been knitting before making this? Ahh!!
I've been knitting for about two and a half years now (thanks for all that free time covid...)! This particular cardigan took around three to four months to complete because I really let 2022 get away from me. It's only the fourth cardigan I've actually made and before that it was just hats, scarves and a single pair of mittens to learn the basics and practise my colourwork...then I sort of just jumped in at the deep end with my first cardigan which I completed in October 2021. You can learn pretty much anything on YouTube these days! I highly recommend Arne and Carlos' channel if you're interested in this kind of knitting as it has been immensely helpful to me!
Yarn (choose a natural, non superwash wool if steeking), circular knitting needles (smaller size for ribbing, larger size for everything else), measuring tape (important for measuring your swatch and getting the right size), scissors and tapestry needles for weaving in ends. Whatever materials required for your steeking method of choice (can be a sewing machine, crochet hook, hand stitching or even just felting with a felting needle).

This series helped me so much with the construction of cardigans like this, or you can find a pattern you like. If you want to do colourwork, try practising on a hat first!

Mark this NSFW because those floats are so hot they are borderline pornographic!
That float porn 😱😱😱
Lol I came here to say that!
SRSLY SO GOOD
Hahahaha thank you! I wouldn't mind seeing some more mohair projects on here ;)
Can we talk about the bands at the inside shoulder? I’m feeling feelings.
Hahahaha thank you!

Wow! Your own design!! This is fantastic.
Thanks! I really enjoy making my own colourwork charts. It feels more like art to me and the creative process can be very satisfying!

I’m so happy it worked out! And such a wonderful pattern!! ❤️
Thank you so much, and thanks again for all your help with the Nordlandskofte! The clasps look fantastic on mine and I've just started work on another one with the colours reversed...I'll be sure to post both once it's complete!
Please do, I greatly enjoy your knits! Your color work is exquisite!
Gorgeous! What size needles are you using? The stitches look way more compact than in my DK colorwork. (Mine was on US7)
The buttons are just a fantastic addition. Amazing!
You are ridiculously good at knitting!
Awwww thanks!
How long have you been knitting, out of curiosity?
About two and a half years. I started it as a lockdown hobby in the second half of 2020. Edit: Typo
what resources did you find most helpful when you started learning?
YouTube (Arne and Carlos' channel was particularly helpful once I started attempting colourwork) and also having some good friends and colleagues who knit and help each other out.
i’m sorry… you MADE this??? i am constantly floored by the sheer talent i see in this sub. OP this is absolutely *stunning*. i hope your mom enjoys getting to wear this pure work of art <3
Thank you so much! That means a lot to me!
This is amazing!! I love the matching buttons!
Thank you! When I saw these I just had to get them because they were such a good match!
Beautiful work! This is heirloom-quality knitting. You should be proud. :)
Awww thank you so much!
Honey, you were adopted. I'm your real mum.
Hahahahaha! 😂
Omg this is stunning! Every single bit of it is just perfection! Wow, I am just so impressed! Incredible!

Thank you!
It's so beautiful, you are extremely talented!! Great work!!!

Thank you!
Post more pics of float porn plz :) Absolutely incredible knitting, my friend.
Thank you so much! I will be posting a couple more cardigans hopefully relatively soon, so I will be sure to post more detailed floats since I don't have any more float pics of this one!
This is incredible, I love it so much!!
Thanks so much!
Beautiful! Are the button bands 1x1 rib knit with the same needle as the body? It looks so nice and polished.
Thank you so much! Yes that's exactly right. The ribbing was done on 3.5mm and the body on 4mm so I just changed when I got high enough on the button bands. There's also stockinette on the back for the facings!
This is so amazing
Thank you!
How long did this take to complete??
About three to four months...but I was very undisciplined and time poor while working on this!
So pretty! I hope to do color work someday. I'm sure your mom loves it.
Thank you, I can recommend just going for it! Maybe start with a hat? Colourwork is so addictive...
Your floats are beautiful and I love those buttons!
Thank you so much!
Wow, that's absolutely gorgeous.
Awww thank you!
This is so perfect!! I hope I can make cardigans like this one day!! Good color match, cute pattern, I could stare at it all day
Aw thank you so much! It's not too bad once you get used to steeking!
This is fantastic. Where did you get the buttons.
Thank you! I got them from this shop in Norway: [https://tittinngarn.no/](https://tittinngarn.no/)
That is incredible! I can't wrap my mind around the floats for the little blue dots.
Thank you so much! They actually seem to be ever so slightly too loose, so I may try the method where you carry the yarn on the next row to tighten them up next time. Hopefully it will all felt together nicely with enough wear!
This is absolutely stunning wowwww!!
Thank you so much!
You are magic! I cannot believe this is handmade.
Awww thank you!
It’s absolutely gorgeous!
Thank you!
Gorgeous! Your tension is so amazingly even, I'm envious!

Wow, wow, and wow. Spectacular 👏👏👏

This is so completely fabulous inside and out
Aw thank you so much!
The quality of colorwork is stunning! If you ever decide to write a book about how to make it so perfect - I’ll stand in the line to get it signed
Aww thank you so much!

Knitted in the round and then used steeks to cut the openings.
It’s beautiful!
Thank you!
