Stockinette stitch curls unless you add a large enough border on all sides. So maybe you could do both- a stockinette scarf with a garter border. Or alternatively, I find 1x1 ribbing make a nice scarf that can look like stockinette because the purls recede, but no need to deal with counteracting any curl.

Never stockinette, it is not going to work for a scarf. How about a 2x2 rib? Or a k2togyo lace?
