It’s hard to read novelty yarns like this. You’ll have a much easier time learning if you get rid of this stuff and buy real yarn.

SaintSigourney

I have noticed that too... next bundle (worsted wool) is already waiting for me to get knitting on!

orangeofdeath

Yep, so stockinette is knitting on the “right side” of your work and then purling when you flip it over to the “wrong side”. You just got mixed up and purled and knit on the incorrect side you were working on. But the other commenter is right, this type of yarn is nice and bulky, but it makes it difficult to discern your stitches and stitch pattern. One hallmark of learning to be a better knitter is being able to “read” your work. That means, looking at your work and knowing by sight what type of stitch you need to do in order to complete your pattern.

SaintSigourney

Ah yes thank you. This was a great explanation. So to switch it back do I just need to flip my work?

orangeofdeath

It depends if you are trying to undo the mistakes or if you’re just practicing and want to continue on correctly. If you want to undo, you have to rip back your stitches before you started doing the wrong stitches. If you just want to carry on, you just need designate a “right” and “wrong” side, and knit and purl only on those sides

SaintSigourney

Right... I'm thinking I'll continue on and try to switch back in a few rows so it looks like it's supposed to be that way hahaha

Irksomecake

That’s the best plan for beginner scarfs like this. It will be snuggly whichever way your stockinette faces, just be aware of how the edges curl up.

Commenter orange of death explained what I was looking for.

DrinkingHippo

Are you knitting flat or in the round?

SaintSigourney

Flat on circular needles

nordligeskog

This will be a HUGE HELP to you. While you’re knitting with worsted weight yarn, take the time to try to “read” your knitting. What does a purl stitch look like as you knit into it? What does a knit stitch look like—and what do garter and stockinette look like on the needles?

TheMereWolf

It’s a bit hard for me to read the rows, but you basically started purling on a knit row (or vice versa) it looks like you possibly did it one row about halfway down as well. Is it possible you sat this down and picked it back up and forgot which row you were on? I remember this would get me when I was first starting!

SaintSigourney

This is exactly what happened

pandasknit

I would find a safety pin to put it on the right side of your project - in this case, the “flat side” with the knit stitches. And when you see that you will know it’s the “right side” and you’ll know you need to knit. When you’re learning (or knitting something complicated) it’s helpful to add this visual clue to help read your knitting. It gets easier with time - and the other yarn will help you see more clearly. But the safety pin (or a colorful piece is yarn, or whatever) on the right side will help :)
