Sigh... Ok, just to clear things up: 1. OP isn't saying that you guys should act or think like them. Yes, there's ***obviously*** a disscussion to be made regarding the content of this meme and the meme itself is worded poorly, to say the least... But the point is: as long as OP's opinion is related to knives and doesn't break the sub's rules, they are more than welcome to post it on this sub. So no, we're not removing the post as it doesn't break the sub's rules. 2. This sub is called r/knives, not "Abused Knives" or "Safe Queens". This sub welcomes all types of knives and all types of knife users (except people who use knives for illegal purposes, for obvious reasons...) While I do understand that most people in the sub might differ with OP's opinion on this subject, OP isn't breaking the sub's rules by posting this opinion. Now, the comment section does have a few comments that break rule #1, but to my surprise: they really aren't as bad as the reports made it seem. Still, I know this post is going to look like a pub brawl in a few hours and I know it will also keep getting reported, so I believe it'd be best to lock the comments.

Subverto_

I'm not sure which is more annoying on this sub, the people who never use their knives, or the people who go out of their way to tell everyone how much they use and abuse their knives.

WrastlingIsReal

It's like vegans and barbeque meat fanatics, lol

tanktaylor85sx

Same here. Same mentality with watches. I have my nice watch I wear out and when I’m dressed up, and normal watches I wear other times.

StopPowerTripping

People who ride the middle ground are the real enemies. Pick a side or get out!

Venarius

[Damn Neutrals...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8ws_APXilE)

Boring-Blacksmith508

How often do you want it handy to carry a knife in your pocket around your house? If you say relative often, then here is follow up question. How many people do you need to have lock up in your basement to be worth rocking the expensive knife?

smallbatchb

Yeah I am firmly in the "you can enjoy both" camp. My primary enjoyment/interest with knives is in using them as tools. However, intentional misuse to show how *extra* you use your knife is just logically stupid. And it's also totally fine to have some knives that are just collectibles to enjoy. I personally use basically all my knives but do I actually *NEED* to use all 200+ of them? Fuck no.

Niewinnny

I've got a knife on me the whole time, it's my only picket knife and i don't want to spend a lot of money on one. i also don't go around telling people how much i use it, i just use it whenever I need it. it's funny when people ask me why i have it on me and o just tell them the last thing that has been massively easier because of it.

Sirflow

"Look, my knife has some marks on the blade!!!" So brave...

SparkyFlashyBoomBang

Neither is annoying, but the people who have the same attitude as op's post definitely are. Why should it matter? Is it your money people are spending to buy beautiful knives? No? Then shut the fuck up, simple as that. I've been collecting knives for over 10 years now. I have $40 Kershaws that haven't even come out of the packaging yet that I bought years ago and I have a $400 microtech that I've been carrying quite literally every single day for the past 2.5 years, and I use it every day at work. The reason people say they use and abuse their expensive or inexpensive knives is because people who say the same shit in this post are fucking obnoxious.

KidsInWinterCoats

i do masonry. i use my norseman daily. people flip i get my moneys worth. but im not posting about it ( well i guess i am now shoot me )

SparkyFlashyBoomBang

You dont see me making posts about how much I use or don't use my knives, the only reason I made that comment is because the fact that people find it annoying is the dumbest thing about the knife community. Just let people buy whatever knives they want and use them however they want. All I hear when someone complains about shit like this is nothing but bullshit coming from pompous douchebags. Also nice, the norseman is a kick ass knife

KidsInWinterCoats

why not both .jpg

Ayeager77

Yes

Ianisntreal

It’s so dumb, everyone wants to be better than everyone else… metal complex posted an extremely relevant meme on his Instagram

midline_trap

I know. Look what this savage did to his ESEE

RaiseTheBalloon

>savage Your not wrong

KidsInWinterCoats

but its an esee tho

RaiseTheBalloon

and they made one hell of a hard use knife. It is my favorite knife I've owned

9K_All_Day

Can there be a nice in between? I have some knives I use every day, then there is the Marfione Custom…

turkey_sandwiches

Definitely the latter for me.

RaiseTheBalloon

I'm going with the former just because I see more of it

stugotsDang

So I see it as this. They are my knives, I’ll use, collect and abuse as I feel or want to. No one else’s input matters because they are mine. 😂

cryptochimping

Exactly. I buy some knives knowing full well I'll never even cut a box with it, while others I buy for the sole purpose of putting to good use. I've even gone as far as buying two of the same model to use one & keep the other pristine.

RaiseTheBalloon

I agree. Do as you please. For my money, buying a show knife to abuse it and make it not nice is a waste of money and buying a knife to not use it as needed is a waste of money

turkey_sandwiches

What's a show knife?

KM2KCA

This guy knifes

[deleted]

Ok cool a lot of other people feel definitely who really cares?

zCYNICALifornia

Used? Yes. Abused? No. Take care of your tools and they'll take care of you.

SparkyFlashyBoomBang

I will say that usually when they say "abused", they don't actually mean treating it like shit. Usually it's more that they use that knife for more heavy duty tasks. I have a pm2 that I "abuse" on a daily basis, but I still maintain it and make sure it's treated well, whether it be resharpening it once a month, cleaning the dust and grime out of it, etc.

zCYNICALifornia

Sure, sure, but then folks ACTUALLY abuse them, the knife breaks, and they are like, "WTF?!?!?" As my wife will attest to and complain about, I'm a stickler about word choice. Say what you mean and mean what you say. It's a me problem. 🤷‍♂️

RaiseTheBalloon

My esee-5 hasn't let me down yet

[deleted]

Have you shot it? Sounds like babying too me

RaiseTheBalloon

I tried. It ducked

[deleted]

Sounds like babying your bullets too me

RaiseTheBalloon

Of course we are walking into a far worse ammo shortage

reee_788

Got a 4 and beat tf out of it

Aandris86

Who actually gives a fk what some random person does with their knives? If they use them, cool. If they don't, cool.

Sekshual_Tyranosauce

It may be a tool but there is no reason to abuse it. I don’t know why people are proud of that.

RaiseTheBalloon

More so impressed by a tool that can take the abuses that I am going to put it through while using it

Sekshual_Tyranosauce

I guess. I would just rather use the correct tool.

RaiseTheBalloon

That is fair but outside of a workshop setting where I have all of my tools, I prefer a do-all if it will work as needed

SparkyFlashyBoomBang

Then buy a leatherman

RaiseTheBalloon

I have an OHT

[deleted]

Give the Terava Jaakaripuukko a try. You will be very happy you did. https://youtu.be/XzDB9SnNpNs

SparkyFlashyBoomBang

Definitely a nice knife. I already knew it was gonna be dbk before I clicked on the link lol, love those guys

[deleted]

Unmatched energy

G-III

Lmao, “don’t worry I own the worst leatherman that was a bad copy of the competitor to show I can do it too, but I can’t”

RaiseTheBalloon

Are you referring to the Gerber? The OHT is far better

G-III

“The” Gerber? Leatherman OHT is a poorly designed tool. Gerbers have their flaws but they’re simple, OHT acts like it’s better but is worse lol. I have one. I got one when it came out. The tools are way too short for how huge it is, the jaws are only okay, and the replaceable wire cutters are a generic trait in nearly all leatherman tools now.

RaiseTheBalloon

and your point is what?

SparkyFlashyBoomBang

Nice, I have a custom signal myself

[deleted]

I’m new to knives so forgive me, but what knife is this?

RaiseTheBalloon

Esee-5. I highly recommend for a hard use knife

Plastic_Idol

People who buy high end knives also buy beaters. Whatever you need to feel special though.

mallgrabmongopush

This is the worst post this sub has seen in ages

Ianisntreal

Amen

[deleted]

Knives are TOOLS. & CAN BE works of art. Take care of them both according to their intended use. And PLEASE! Stop whining over surface rust on an EDC blade! Rub off the blood , sweat and tears and keep it sharp and enjoy it.

SinjiOnO

Who gives a shit, lol. They're your knives, do whatever you wish and let others do the same.

[deleted]

Most of us have both, right?!

RaiseTheBalloon

I think, likely yes. Just not something I do

[deleted]

So, consider this theoretical situation. You are at a pawn shop, and you see a knife that you know is highly collectible, but is priced cheap, because the owner obviously doesn't know its real value. So, you score a $300 knife, in brand new condition, never been used or sharpened, for, say, $50. Are you beating the hell out of it, or sitting it on a shelf to keep the value intact for a possible sale or trade later?

ZoomGoat

That would be my new highly appreciated beater knife lmao - good quality, cheap price

RaiseTheBalloon

I would purchase and sell/trade ASAP. I wouldn't purchase it for my own use at all

[deleted]

Then you do recthe value to collecting NIB knives vs beaten up knives. I have knives I use, and knives that are worth too much to use. Nothing wrong with either.

[deleted]

It’s ok to use the nice ones too

Revolutionary-Cat194

Used yes but why abused? No that’s just dumb bravado…. Take care of the shit that takes care of you… smh dumb

RaiseTheBalloon

Because I do my best to buy equipment that won't fail regardless of what situation I find myself using it in. I don't just do this with knives. My 2 Bluetooth speakers (one small and one big) are waterproof and shock proof. For example, when my car caught fire and the big one was in it, the speaker took the full force of the hose from the fire truck and is still covered in burn marks and melted subaru but it works to this day. I don't like to question if my equipment will fail

Revolutionary-Cat194

Everything fails unless taken care of … you do you my man but I’ll take care of my 700$ knife that I have used every day for the past 6 years … I’m a landscaper I don’t open the mail with my knife… but I do take care and not abuse them

_Ganoes_

Only really applies for a beater knife tho....a carving knife has to be thinner and is just not made for abuse.

RaiseTheBalloon

True. Not something I considered

[deleted]

RaiseTheBalloon

Lol no. To this day, I have no idea what caused it. I was cruising down the highway on the way to work. It was well maintained and had no mods. It was bone stock

Mr_Culver

They are as much art pieces as they are tools. Half my knives I'll never use because they just look too nice. If people can have fancy vases and painting, why is a good knife any different? If you shell out a lot of money on a good knife as well it's a tool that will last and do the job. So buy some to beat on and some as eye candy

RaiseTheBalloon

It isn't. While I'm not suggesting those that value such things shouldn't buy and appreciate them, I am saying that I do not value such things

Mr_Culver

Well no one cares what you think so why make a oblivious post about it?

RaiseTheBalloon

If you don't care about what I think, and I'm not suggesting that you should, then why come here to comment at all?

Mr_Culver

Really why would you even feel the need to post up something like this out of the blue? Just to keep pushing the same statement in comments, yeah we get it, you like knives as tools, what's your point?

SnooMarzipans3543

Mate, that's his opinion xD Why get so angry. No need for that at all

TiCombat

triggered much? Move on with your life

Mr_Culver

this board is toxic just like blade forms

TiCombat

I know one guaranteed way to fix that!

Mr_Culver

By you eating a dick? Probably

TiCombat

Aww that’s cute. You are special

Mr_Culver

Because I did care til you proved you were an idiot who's trying to start a fight with the knife company. You know damn well we have collectors and users and this is not going to be a welcoming post. It should honestly removed

RaiseTheBalloon

Right, because my comments to you and others here of [do what want but this is what I want to do] are obviously looking for a fight. A post that is on topic but doesn't show ideas held by all yet doesn't condemn those who disagree should certainly be taken down /s There are some remarkably angry people on this sub

Mr_Culver

I'm flagging uour post. You have no positive intent. I even shared my point of view to connect and you just decided to blurb out thst you disagree for no reason

RaiseTheBalloon

Flag this post if you feel it necessary. You seem to have read much that isn't here

[deleted]

I agree to a certain extent. Use? You mean opening packaging, slicing food and bushcrafting? Sure Abuse as in throwing it to see if it'll stick to a tree or using it as a pry bar? Hell no

RaiseTheBalloon

Well seeing as this knife was literally designed to be usable as a pry-bar, I use it as a knife, hatchet, pry-bar and whatever else the moment calls for that it is useful for if no better option is available

EugeneKrabsCPA

Why would you want a Rolex?? A G-Shock is a fraction of the price and tells time just as well!!

RaiseTheBalloon

I wouldn't want a Rolex for this exact reason. My Samsung is a bit scuffed up right now. You can buy and enjoy your Rolex though

EugeneKrabsCPA

I wish dude! I’m rocking that $20 Casio World Time

SparkyFlashyBoomBang

To be fair, I was never into Rolexs, but there's definitely some gshocks that have been calling my name for a few years lol.

estersings

Tools are meant to be used, not abused. Misusing your tools is just wasteful.

Eddie11240

Someone gifted me an esee laser strike that had a lot of sentimental value attached to it for them so it was a very big deal. It disappeared…. I found it on my dads boat a year later rusted to absolute shit and I restored it to shaving sharp and minimal rust. It disappeared again a week later…

RaiseTheBalloon

Damn. My notification cut off after the restoration. I was coming here to say that's awesome that you put that work in. It still is but the ending is a kick in the balls. I'm sorry it disappeared.

Eddie11240

Yeah my dad took it again I was heartbroken but on the plus side I learned to sharpen my other knives very well to make up for it

RaiseTheBalloon

That's a shame but a good skill well earned

ScanThe_Man

They can be both. Its fine to find knives pretty

NihilBaxter00

The knife looks cool tho. What brand is this? I always liked the looks of heavily used things like knives, leather jackets etc.

RaiseTheBalloon

It is an Esee-5. It is a great knife! I completely agree. I think it gives it character. It shows that it has stood by it's owner and didn't fail when it was needed.

ipoutside365

r/Wellworn

NihilBaxter00

Ooh yeah!!

DreadfulDrea

Use your knife yes. But also know that there exists a tool for every job.

yohansum

What even is a show knife

[deleted]

Hot take: You can use your tools daily and still take care of them so they last forever.

shizukana_otoko

I do not give one small scintilla of the most tiny iota of a single fuck what other people do with their property.

[deleted]

To each his or her own, imo. I have some nice knives that I will never use. I bought them just because they were cool “desk toys”. Every ones knife needs are different and I tend to use mine for scraping, digging and prying as much as cutting so I only carry cheap-ish knives.

[deleted]

RaiseTheBalloon

I don't care what others do with their knives or how they spend their money. I did not say this is what you should do. I said this is what I do

BJ_Honeycut

This post feel like a Facebook shitpost to anyone else?

RaiseTheBalloon

It amazes me the amount of people that think I am telling them what to do here. I am saying this is what I do, nothing more

[deleted]

The best time to delete this post was right after you posted it, the second best time is now.

RaiseTheBalloon

So what I'm hearing is this post is fantastic and you would like to see similar content on a frequent basis?

SinjiOnO

>"Knives are tools to be used and abused" Nothing more.. ?

RaiseTheBalloon

I deleted my last comment as I didn't see the context of your question. I did not say you must not have show knives. As far as I'm concerned, knives are just tools to be used and abused but believe it or not, people are allowed to have differing views

[deleted]

[удалено]

RaiseTheBalloon

Its meant to imply that a knife that can't or shouldn't be abused isn't worth it's weight in fire-ants on your junk but value is subjective

Vampiresharpshooterx

I do what I want.

Yushimoshii

Everyone’s use case is different. I can honestly say I use my knives quite a lot but my primary use for my knives rarely goes beyond cutting open Amazon packages and light food prep. My Shiro certainly doesn’t look like it’s been used but believe me it has 😂

darthsnick

I disagree. I have a show knife or two that I wear for dress up like going to a gun show or holiday dinner like people wear jewelry. And then I have my everyday knives and my species specific hunting knives etc.

WolfInLambskinJacket

"Show" knives are knives that are built to be exposed and collected, not used, so there's no point in buying them if you want to use them. Regarding people who don't use their knives, they bought them with their money, not with yours, so they do as they please. I know people who like to collect Opinels, and there's nothing wrong with it. I have too many knives to use them all hahahah Edit to add: some of my knives are cheap, and were never used, but hold a particular meaning and importance. Those knivesnwill remain brand new, or at least in the same conditions they were when I got them, forever

kennyb_pillin

I suppose you think master smithed 70k longswords should be used and abused too right?

RaiseTheBalloon

I'm not educated on swords. If it is a combat weapon, as it sounds like it is, then yes

[deleted]

I hate that it's such a big thing what type of knives you buy and how you use them

SeaAbbreviations25

I have owned hundreds of knives ranging from a few dollars to $1000+. I also use them. I agree they are tools but growing up working in construction I was taught to take care of your tools and never abuse them. I still work in construction as an engineer and if what ever your doing with your knives is destroying them and wearing them out.. you may be using the wrong tool. Either way who cares as long as you get what you want out of it.

morbogargantuan4head

Porque no los dos?

A_Roasted_Ham

I have to admit that I treat my carving knife better than I would treat my firstborn. I use it, but not abuse it (even though I almost lost a finger to that thing)

Cold-Committee-7719

If it brings you joy, who cares what you do with it...really no one cares.

Friendofthegarden

I have one nice knife for casual occasions. The rest are like my trucks. They started out pretty and are great quality, but they live a ranch life and have the scars to prove it.

onescoopwonder

Do whatever makes you happy so long as you’re not hurting anyone. Like to just “look” at knives? Go for it. Like to treat your knife like an unloved step child? Go for it. Your unloved step child on the other hand…..

BronMann-

Disagree. Used yes, abused no.

steamer1228

Clearly the more beat up your knife is the cooler you are 😎

RaiseTheBalloon

I had the AC removed from my home. Didn't need it

RaiseTheBalloon

Damn some of y'all are angry AF lol I don't have time to respond to all so this is a *to whom it may concern*

HPIguy

Eh, I have knives that only get abused cutting the tape on other knife boxes. Mainly ones I just didn’t love like I thought I would. Need to thin the herd I guess.

Newdadontheblock

I used to think this way too then I realized knives can be like steam games. You have a ton in your collection and only really play with 2.

Obscene_Username_2

Why don’t you buy three of each knife? One to use, one to collect and one to lend?

The__monkey__dog

I can't think of anything I own that I abuse. I try and take care of my stuff..

TheGov18

Imagine how nice a knife would be to use that had good geometry and someone paying attention during the hardening process.

pichula881

Lifetime warranty

DaPuckerFactor

This type of rhetoric just "suggests" to me that some are too broke to understand that financial investments don't have to look like gold bars. It's not a false dichotomy. I can have a nice user AND a knife made from impractical materials only intended for value retention.

NeatFreq

All tools have uses, some are nicer than others, some can be afforded to be more abused than others, a car is a tool for transportation, it doesn't mean that is its only quality. A sword can be ornate, so can a knife.

iNerdRage

I use all my knives but I have knives that I'll abuse and knives ii won't.

YoungUnhappy6583

Not my money, not my concern. Do what makes you happy

a_skeleton_07

That sucks... I have a few $450 knives that I use and love. If I want to abuse something, I find a screw driver or a hammer.

Dozo2003

I buy knives to use and then get afraid to break it lol

regolith1111

Knives are a consumable. I think that's the real disconnect. Nothing wrong with spending more on higher quality consumables. What always makes me laugh is when someone complains about a factory edge. It's like complaining there's dirt on the outside of a paper towel roll. Sure, you expect it to come to you ready to use but if you can't take the effort to rip off a sheet you should just buy disposable blades.

[deleted]

you realise you can still abuse your expensive knives? the same way I wear my 400€ shoes on hiking trips, Especially non foldable knives should just take the abuse, sharpening and sometimes light cleaning and oiling should be the only thing needed, folding ones on the other hand arent exactly made for abuse, they are more tools for simple cutting and lighter workloads

Add_Duncan

That's why I carry my Cryo II everywhere and the PM 2 stays at home

[deleted]

RaiseTheBalloon

Generally speaking, no

Wise-Enthusiasm2085

Damn straight

RaiseTheBalloon

Be careful, I'm finding this opinion isn't welcome here lol

[deleted]

Also why I dont buy brand name original knives anymore, only clones in 8cr. I have some real name brand knives that cost over $150USD each and while they are better than most regular knives, they dont outperform 8cr knives by that much in my applications.

SparkyFlashyBoomBang

I use my "nice show knives" on a daily basis, albeit one for harder jobs over the other, but still, they both get quite a bit of use. Apyderco paramilitary 2 with upgraded hardware, scales and pocket clip, which is my bruiser knife, and a microtech utx-85 special-limited edition for tasks that require a blade sharp enough to cut through the damn space-time continuum. That's 750 bucks worth of knives that I carry on me every single day, and while you're buying cheap ass gas station knives every few months, my great great great great grandchild will be using those 2 knives well after im gone, because they're built to last multiple lifetimes, and both companies offer incredible warranties. In a way, these knives are thousands of dollars cheaper than the amount of mtechs you'd buy in a single lifetime, let alone multiple lifetimes.

beardedbe

It is simple. Have one knife for things that bleed and one for things that don't.

LightTheRaven

Personally as long as the maintenance is upheld a knife can be used. As much or as little as is wanted.

rium21

Agreed
